Book one was started when Sarah was sixteen as a fractured fairytale. She wondered what would happen if Cinderella was an assassin, and instead of going to the ball to meet the prince, she was going to kill him...

It has made many changes since then and hardly resembles Cinderella anymore. The glass castle is a nod, of course, to the glass slipper. SJMs weaving of mythology and the history of Erilea is detailed and complex. I practically need to keep a notebook handy to keep characters and timelines straight!

Celaena is not the strong assasin she had been when Chaol and Dorian pull her out of slavery from the mines of Endovier. She is physically and mentally broken. It takes time for her to get back her former skills.

The battles, training with Chaol and all of the strange deaths occurring within the castle play into the tension of the storyline. Celaena is hesitant to trust anyone, especially the "ladies" that frequently visit. Nehemia is the acception as she gains Celaena's trust and explains the significance of the wyrds.

The mystery of the strange Wyrd symbols and the loss of magic all play in to the back story we only glimpse in ToG. If we only knew the epic struggle to come.

Enough of the dramatic recap...

I read the first four books over a marathon of five days. They kept me up at night, I may have even skipped a few meals trying to complete the books. That's what happens when you jump on board half way through the series!

What are your thoughts on Dorian? Prince of hearts or heartbreaker?

What about Chaol? I've always adored a man in uniform...just saying.

The ending though...
