Heir of Fire
Get comfy because this is where the pedal hits the metal in the series for me. I got some talkin to do. And most likely throw out some spoilers if you haven't read it yet so, just saying.
I will start this right now by saying that after CoM I was a wreck. I was horrified that my girl SJM would do that to us. Seriously I was like...
But I went ahead and jumped in to Heir of Fire because I had hope in my heart. A hope that burned for resolution and redemption. I was not disappointed, but it certainly didn't happen the way I had hoped and dreamed. It was BETTER!!
Weren't you just like...
...by the end?!? I'm mean, right! 😍 Of course, the book did END and like SJM seems to always do, it was somewhat unresolved, so again I was like...
...again!!! I thought I was a mess after CoM, but this one opened up a whole new level of "whaaaaa" I needed me some Rowelin, stat!
The turn of events in HoF was unbelievable! We get to travel to Wendlyn and finally, I mean FINALLY, meet the Fae. Now that we realize that Celaena is actually Aelin.
We still get to see how things are going with Chaol and Dorian. We learn about another dastardly plan that Duke Perrington is working on.
And then we get to know Elide and Manon. Can anyone say "game changer"? Because it is.
Manon is the definition of a 'witch' but our girl SJM hints at the potential for a soft heart. It reads almost like Manon is trying to deny her innate ability towards kindness by being extra tough. Our fearless author does like her hints!
Personally I wasn't that surprised when Celaena confessed to being Aelin. There was enough groundwork laid prior to that to hint about her true identity.
But, lest we forget, the biggest WTH of the book is by far (drum roll please) Rowan.
What did you think I was referring to, skin walkers? The Valg? Well, yeah those guys are pretty messed up. But back to the best part...
Their whole storyline kept me up at night. Ha! It would wake me up from a dead sleep with anxiety over what would happen next. I mean, it started out with a hate-hate scenario between those two. And we all know how those turn out...
The progression seemed natural, using stressful and life threatening situations, as well as shared tragedies, to bring them together.
And who didn't get totally wrapped up in Rowan when he flipped out over her scars, and then we realized that his heart had broken knowing what she had gone through?!?
Holy sh... they weren't even "romantic" in a traditional sense but it had me heated, and wondering what was taking them so long to realize it?!?
The blood oath. The friken blood oath. That had me like... I can't even, I was dying. I died. I am dead. It was too much. And fireheart. And being carranem or however you spell it. I CANT!!!!
Okay, what about you? There were so many locations and storylines going at once, which kept you most engaged? Or were they equal in appeal for you?
What were your thoughts about Manon? Or Elide? Did anyone else serve up a surprise for you? I know that the addition of the witch elements in this felt odd to me because it wasn't immediately obvious how everything would fit together. Hints are dropped of course, but that story is further developed in Queen of Shadows.
So this book is what fueled my fandom fire, how about you? Are you a Rowelin shipper like me or did you stay team Chaol, or even Dorian?
And...How about this awesome YouTube fan trailer made by Anna Scarlett?
