9. The Bonfire

After Grandma left for her room, we all went to the backyard. It was almost sunset, and the backyard never looked more beautiful.

"Woowww, it is so beautiful out here. "Is that the castle?" Adrian enquired.

"Yes," I replied, adding, "at this time of the evening, it looks splendid. Does not it?"

Aiden responds, "Only from afar." I turn to face him. When he looked at the castle, I could tell he was lonely and longing. I could recognize those emotions. I experienced the same emotions.

"Well, let us prepare the bonfire; Aiden, Adrian, and I will bring dry wood, and Aurelia, you can bring the marshmallows from the kitchen," Abigail says dismissively, walking away with the other two in tow. Aiden gave me a sympathetic expression, but followed her.

Something about her tone irritated my beast, and she lashes out. Hair started sprouting from my back.

Oh, oh, I think my shot is wearing off.

My wolf was trying to run forward. I covered the back of my neck to conceal the hair that had grown. They had not gone far, and with their heightened senses, they could smell her and even see her; after all, Aiden was the Alpha King. It wasn't a problem for him.

My wolf was howling, pulling me towards the forest where the three had gone. I take a deep breath and dash to my room. Pulling the door open, I went towards my cupboard, opening it, and by then, my hair had started sprouting on my hands. My beast was still lashing out.

I drag the drawer out and reach out to the container holding the shots while moving away from the other items in the way. I reach into the box and take the syringe, pressing it into the crook of my elbow. I could immediately feel my beast calming down. That will do for a few more hours. I could sense my wolf calming down, but I heard a sudden crash followed by the crashing of my room's door.

It was Aiden; he was breathing heavily and sniffing the air.  I hid the syringe back inside the cupboard drawer and shut it close.Hearing the noise, Grandma too rushed inside, panting heavily. She sniffed the air and understood what had happened.

'I smelled the air; your shot must have begun to wear off, but why is Aiden so agitated?' she links me.

"Whose scent is this?" Aiden inquires.

"It's mine, Aiden," I mutter.

"No", he says, coming towards me and holding my arms, bringing me close to him. He burrows his nose in my hair and takes a deep breath. He then leans away.

"But there was this extra sweetness; I don't smell it on you," Aiden replies.

"It must have been the marshmallows; I came to my room to change,"

Coincidentally, there was a bag of marshmallows on my table, and he appeared to have bought the lie, nodding, but looking at me suspiciously.

I kept marshmallows and chocolate on my desk to eat while I was bored, so they came in handy.

"Now, can you give me some privacy?" I exclaim, jerking my hands in the air.

Nodding, he goes out of the room with Grandma on his heels while Adrian and Abigail peek from behind the door. Grandma shuts the door behind her, winking at me.

'That was close,' she links.

'Yes' I reply and close the link off.

I change into jeans and a comfortable t-shirt, grab ahold of marshmallows, and using the scent masking spray in the room.

By the time I reached the backyard, the bonfire had started, and I even saw two wooden logs surrounding it.

"Where did you find those logs?" I ask.

"In the forest, obviously," Abigail retorts in a snappy tone.

"We dragged them out of the forest," Adrian elaborates.

There is an empty spot next to Aiden, so I sit there and extend the bag of marshmallows to him.

"Thanks, and um, sorry, my beast was annoying me, and it was a weird scent, so... Anyway, sorry for barging into your room and breaking your backyard door." Aiden remarks, looking guilty.

"No problem, Aiden," I smile in reply.

Any were would have reacted the same way, I think to myself.

I look at the sky and sigh at how beautiful the world is. I gaze at the bonfire as I hear music play. It is a party number, and Adrian and Abigail are dancing to it. They are all over the place. Their limbs are not in sync but somehow they do it together.

They seem to be enjoying themselves. Abigail is happy; she is staring admiringly at Adrian, and it is then that I understand she likes him and may have thought I was a threat.

I look beside me to see Aiden laughing at their weird moves.

Just then, the song changes into a slow one and Abigail approaches Aiden, pulling him for a slow dance. He lets her tug him along and starts dancing with her, turning and swaying. but their body language is friendly, not passionate or romantic. they are laughing as they danced. Adrian comes and sits beside me.

"Aiden is a bit of a grump, you'll get used to his nature; deep down, he's a great guy and as for Abigail, well, she's Abigail." Adrian speaks to me while looking at their dance and just shrugging.

"Haha, yeah, I can see that," I say, my laugh turning into a murmur as I see them dance.

I see Abigail glare at me and grumble. I have to make it clear to her. I am not interested in Adrian.

She leaves Aiden mid-dance, leaving Aiden confused, and strides towards us, pulling Adrian into a slow dance. Aiden, not knowing what to do, approaches me.

"May I have the honour of this dance, ma'am?" he said it softly, leaning towards me with his hand stretched out.

"Ofcourse,Sir."

Holding my hand, he leads me to where his friends were dancing and waltzes with me. Well, he waltzes while I awkwardly move left and right. He senses my hesitation.

He groans. "What's the problem now?"

"I haven't danced for a while," I say sheepishly.

"Oh, how long is that while?"

"Ten years; I last danced when I was thirteen," I grumble.

"That's been a really long time, but why?" He questioned.

"Let's just say that I don't have lots of friends; being a weresap and graduating earlier than my peers left me with few friends."

"Is that the reason why you were silent during the dinner?"

I looked up at him in surprise; all along, I had my eyes lowered, feeling down, but the fact that he had noticed my silence astounded me. Meanwhile, Abigail and Adrian were flaunting their dancing abilities all around us. They really rocked the slow dancing.

"Yes, I do not mingle so easily," I admit.

"Well, start mingling; we are your friends now." I smile at his words, and he smiles back.

Now, Abigail and Adrian ran into us. "Come on, you two, you are supposed to dance, not waddle around like penguins," Adrian teases.

Aiden and I exchange annoyed looks as he taunts.

"I believe we need to show them how to really dance," Aiden says, glaring at his best friend.

"Yes, apparently we do," I respond, my eyes narrowing with determination.

My beast was already waiting for anything that would liberate her; she simply howled in response. Our eyes lock, and our beasts flash in them.

Then we begin dancing around the bonfire, really dancing. Adrian's suggestion triggered my adrenaline and activated my muscle memory.

We started slowly trying to find our groove, swaying from side to side. But we easily got used to each others movements and started making turns.

We danced our way to Adrian and Abigail, then Aiden spun me in circles around them, not giving them a way out. We then swayed and bumped into them just the way they had earlier.

Aiden then pushed me away, reeled me back in my back to his front and then spun me once again so that we were facing each other He then lifted me, his hands at my waist and my waist at his shoulder level, my legs stretched out behind me and spun us around twice while I still remained in air. He then used his extra strength and bounced me in the air, caught me in his arms—bridal style—and spun again, coming to a halt after two spins. He let me down smoothly, looking into my eyes.

We then heard the noise of claps. It was grandma; she was grinning. We immediately broke apart, taking a step away from each other.

"What a lovely dance it was," she praised.

"Thank you, grandma."

"Thank you, Nana."

We both say it in unison.

It took a moment to regain our composure but then we turned to look at Adrian and Abigail. They stood there, mouths hanging open in shock. We glanced at each other and smirked at them.

"What cat got your tongue?" Aiden taunts.

They still wore the same expressions of shock.

"Hey, shut your mouths; we have little taste for fleas," I teased, adding to their embarrassment.

They regained their composure and closed their hanging mouths. Grandma chuckled behind us.

"You guys keep going, but do not stay too late because Aurelia has an early shift."

"But, Grandma, you came down. Do you need anything?"I ask, worried.

"No, I just came down to drink a glass of water and stopped seeing you two dance; now I will go rest, and do not forget to fix the door before you leave," she says, turning on her heel and walking back into the house through the now-broken door.

Now, Aiden and I return our attention to the pair who teased us.

"Now who was it stuck like statues in a garden?" snickered Aiden.

"Not us for certain, Aiden, common, now help me fix the door; these two will need time to regain their composures," I add, chuckling and walking towards the broken door, Aiden following me as the both of them emerge from their trance and look at us in annoyance, their lips pouting.

'Aiden' I tried to contact Aiden via the link. I was not sure if he would let me in.Because we were not part of a family or a pack, our bonds were weaker, but with time and frequency, they would strengthen.

'Yes,' he replied, and I could sense his confusion through the link.

'Does Abigail like Adrian?'

He looked at me, surprised, and raised his brow.'How did you guess?'

'Well, the number of glares directed my way was enough,' I responded.

'What about you? Do you like him?'

It was my turn to look at him, but my expression was filled with disgust.'No, he is my boss, for goodness sake, and even if he wasn't, I am not interested in dating,' I stated via the link.

'Oh,' and then the link went silent.

I walked towards the kitchen and, stretching my hand out, opened the drawers below the kitchen platform. As I saw the drill machine kit, I held its handle ragging it out and then lifted it, placing it on the platform while closing the drawer with my hip.

"Where can i find the hinges, Aurelia?" Aiden asked, with Adrian and Abigail towing him. In the garage, I pointed and reached into my pocket, throwing the keys at him.he raised his hand and caught them nodding as he headed away. Adrian and Abigail were leaving behind him when I called out

"Abigail, a little bit of help?" I ask.

Adrian looked at me in surprise before glancing at abigail and following Aiden to the garage. She nodded and strode towards me, taking the kit from my hands, before turning around and going to the backyard without saying a word.

I shrug, smiling at her behaviour.

This was going to be a long evening.

I walked towards the backdoor. I saw her sitting on the logs, opening the kit , her fingers reaching into the grooves to open the kit. I walked towards her and sat beside her, staring at her. She had her eyes focused on the kit, but she must have understood I was looking at her as she asked, "What?"

To spite her, I repeat the same words,What?"

Irritation flashed her face and taking a deep breath, she again focused on the kit, taking out the drill and finding the drill bit for wood and metal.

"Can we talk? In private," I asked gently.

She raised her brows in surprise and narrowed her eyes at me."Why"

"Well, I don't know. It may be because you are always glaring at me and I haven't even done anything wrong," I explained.

"Haven't you? you are flirting with my  best friend," She exclaimed.

"Shhh, do you want them to hear?" I reminded her. She nodded in response and linked me.

'Why are you flirting?' she asked.

'First of all, I am not flirting; second, you need to specify who I am flirting with because I do not know the answer' She narrowed her eyes at me, glaring even more.

'Adrian! You have somehow convinced him to offer you a research position. She shouted via the link. I winced in response.

'Point number one: I am not flirting; I am not at all interested in him.

Point number two: he was the one who offered with the aid of my PhD guide, Dr. Cyrus.

point number three: He is all yours; you don't need to be insecure.' I said via the link.

Her expression changed upon hearing this, and she started stuttering, 'No, he's not mine; it's just that he is my best friend.

'Yeah, right,' I teased and smirked.

Raising from my seat, i took the drill machine out and walked towards the door. Luckily, we had an external point to connect our drill near the door and did not need to use an extension box.By that time, even Adrian and Aiden had managed to find the hinges and were walking towards us. I turned back and glanced at her, jerking my head towards the door, indicating that she should come.

The rest of the process of fixing the door was uneventful. however, I felt as if Abigail was reassessing me and contemplating my words. she linked, 'Sorry, I misjudged you.'

'Well, it's not okay but I will brush it off this time'

Soon, it was nearly nine in the evening, and it was time for everybody to leave.

"Bye, Aurelia," Adrian said, shaking my hand, and Aiden did the same, following in his stead.

To my surprise, Abigail hugged me and said goodbye.

I smiled at her, and she gave me an apologetic smile before turning towards the guys and saying, "Let's leave; Aurelia has a big day tomorrow."

Aiden looked at her in surprise before raising a brow at me. I just smirked at him and shrugged. Adrian looked confused, seeing the two of us."What are you signaling?"

Aiden rolled his eyes and said, "Nothing, just wishing her luck," and then earnestly added,All the best, Aurelia."

"Thanks, Aiden," I replied.

All of them left: Aiden on his Ducati, Abigail, and Adrian in their respective Audis.

Cool cars, I thought.

How do you feel about their dance?

Do you like a nice roasted marshmallow or a plain one?

Please like, share, and comment.
