THE LOW, A JACK HARLOW FIC.

CHAPTER 16.

BEGIN.

Jack ran a hair through his hair before he sighed. What if Solána found out about this. She would never trust me. Jack looked up as the girl stood there, nervous and confident all at the same time.

She looked him in the eye and then down at his cellphone as he slipped it into his pocket. Her eye narrowed for a split second and then went back to normal. She looked at him before taking a deep breath.

"Who was that?" She asked as he shrugged. Anything he would tell her about Claire would end badly, even her name. Especially everything else that went on between them. Solána would never trust him otherwise. Or maybe she would.

"Nobody." He could see Solánas mood change from neutral to destructive. She stared at him for a minute trying to decide what she should do. What would she do? They were dating. Was she really going to give it up for some phone call?

Yeah probably. She was stubborn and strong and would definitely take a chance to run if she thought she was being cheated or taken advantage of. "I saw it.. the name started with a C." She said in a relaxed nature but there was a fire in her eyes.

Craig. Clarence. Clark. He thought of C names that would help him out but shook off the thought of lying to her. How much it would hurt the both of them? But he couldn't tell the truth either. He had to pick one. She should be able to afford some kind of fidelity, and he should be able to afford some kind of trust.

"And you stepped out of the room to speak.." she continued with her accusation that seemed to have no end. She looked down the steps from the side of the door like she was trying to think about something. "And you didn't ignore the call, even though." She but her lip in thought as Jack grinned his teeth together.

"You were with me." The way she said it quietly, and solemnly. Like it was a thing of the past sent a stab through Jacks chest as he stared at her thinking of his next move. Clearly that wasn't okay to do, step away while being with her. The only reason he would've ever done it is because of Claire.

She was too- there was no words for it. Thinking about her caused him stress. The way any ex would.

"No I know baby I just needed to deal with something." That sounded right enough to him. In his head he needed to do something privately, it involved someone on the phone so he had to step out. Fine. It wasn't fine to her and it was less than an explanation.

"Baby? Are you serious right now Jack? You just secretly stepped out to talk to someone else." She sounded like she was waiting for him to say the wrong thing. So it would justify her snapping. And it didn't, he couldn't stand it, it sounded wrong.

"Yeah I'm serious, I didn't step anywhere in secret I needed to speak about something and I have to deal with it, with my manager later." He said giving her as much information as he could as she sucked her teeth. Jack could feel his face getting red. That same splitting sound, it's like he could feel his ex in the room with him, berating everything he did.

"So your manager was on the phone?" She spoke with sass, with conviction, with a full accusation right on her tongue just waiting for him to fill in the blanks. He was tired of her, her attitude. She sounded like his ex and that's the last way he every wanted to remember her. That's the last kind of tone he wanted to hear from someone he was dating.

"No." Jack blew out a breath. He stopped trying to stress but his head was pulsing. It's not her fault.

I can't believe you Jack. Seriously like you can't afford to get me a dress? How much was it really? A few hundred dollars? Isn't that what you have a job for? And you keep spending money so you can make music.

I was trying to get you a deal with my cousin because I thought it was a hobby but be realistic you weren't made to be a rapper.

What're you gonna do with your life? You're not doing anything for me. It's like pathetic.

I fell in love with you Jack because you're sweet and honest but you're growing ignorant. You need to open your eyes to the world like seriously. You won't be anything, especially not without me, so stop trying. Please darling.

It's not her fault if she sounds like her, she's just mad. A tear threatened to fall from jacks eye as his wiped his face. Thinking about his ex was not what he wanted. "I know you're mad Solána but you're exaggerating.." he sighed and stared at her.

Solána felt a weight deep in her chest as Jack said that. Maybe she was exaggerating, maybe. But why couldn't he just tell her the truth? Why did it feel like there was more to the story? Why did it seem like Jack had something to hide and if she didn't find it she would end up looking stupid?

"I have to go." She said quietly to herself as Jack picked up his head to her. His eyes were almost as red as his face and she couldn't imagine seeing him so stressed. It must be true then, there must be another woman. The thought ripped a piece of Solánas heart as she headed back into the room.

She could feel Jack following her as she gathered her stuff, "so what does that mean?" His voice was on the edge of breaking but he kept himself together. Is this how people act when they're guilty? Or honest?

"Sol." He demanded as she turned around to him, he became blurry as she thought of what to say. She wiped her tear and stood up a bit straighter.

"I don't date cheaters Jack." The words ripped at her chest, at her throat as Jack flinched, he looked surprised, "Cheat- what the hell are you talking about?" Solána stopped at the subtle curse as a shiver reached her body.

You're not leaving me, where the hell do you think you're going?

She could hear her exes words in her ears and she calmed looking at Jack realizing they were completely different. Arrogant and Humble. Abuser and Cheater.

"I'm talking about who was on your phone and how you're hiding her from me. Why did you agree to be my boyfriend just to-" Solána sniffled before she felt herself being squeezed, Jacks warm arms wrapped around her from behind as her heart sped up and then slowed.

"I would never do that to you." He whispered in her ears sending another chill to her body. She sniffled under him staying like that for a minute before shaking her head.

"Who is it Jack? A groupie? An ex? A friend?" She questioned as he stilled from behind her. He let out a deep sigh, "I wish you trusted me." He mumbled before letting go as if he couldn't hold her anymore.

"Did she contact you or did you contact her?" Solána wanted to ask every single question that came to her head. Jack looked exhausted, he refused to answer, "do you... did you do what we did? All of it? On your couch in your bed? Did you make her breakfast?"Solána was crying now as she sat down and imagined it.

"It's only you. It was only you. But you just don't trust me.. have you ever even trusted me? Or believed in me? Or loved me?" He was turning things around but it sounded like he was just speaking his mind and droning on like he was on truth serum. Or just too deep in thought to do anything else but speak.

"I did Jack. So why'd you be with someone else? What's she got that I don't?" Solána begged as he looked at her like he was bored and defeated.

"Nothing." He said. He was too tired. Too tired to beg her to be with him. He was done of asking if she liked him. He was done asking her to trust him. He was done... with her... it felt wrong there was an ache in his chest but there was nothing he could do about it. He asked her to settle for some version of the truth and she couldn't.

She just couldn't.
