Chapter 5: Letters and Flying Lessons

Y/N POV

It has been a couple of days since the first day and it is now September 9th, mine and Lana's birthday. I woke up with an excited expression and about to yelp with joy, but once again I was the only one up again.

Why am I always the only one that's awake?

Anyways, I did my morning routine, made the bed, got ready for classes and played with Snowball for a bit. It was still quite early so not many people were up, so I tried to keep quiet while I did what I had to do. I was quite excited for today since I ordered something for Lana for our birthday and I was really hoping that she would like it. I got her some Muggle and Wizarding treats, along with something that I think she would really love.

'I wonder what she got for me though." I wondered to myself.

As more of the boys left the dorm, I left along with them, only to be stopped by Ron and Harry greeting me.

"Hello, Ron, Harry. How are you guys?" I asked them.

"Not bad, but also happy birthday!" Harry exclaimed.

I'm surprised that the two of them know, even though I never told them. "How did you know it's my birthday? I don't think I told the both of you?"

"Yeah, you didn't, but Hermione mentioned it was your birthday on the 9th. But still, Happy Birthday, mate!" Ron said, pulling me in a hug.

"Thanks, mate!" I added.

"Y/N!" a familiar voice called out. As Ron pulled away, all I got to see was a storm of bushy brown hair tackling me in a hug. "Happy Birthday!" Hermione said as she pulled away from me.

"Aw, thank you, 'Mione!" I said as I blushed. Harry and Ron seemed to have gone to breakfast and the two of us were left alone. Hermione blushed at the thought of her nickname. "Oh, I have something for you here." She said as she pulled something from her robes. "Do you mind if you close your eyes for this?"

I nodded and closed my eyes. I felt her soft hands take my hand, open my palm and placed something in it.

"Y-You can open your eyes now." Hermione said, stuttering.

As I opened my eyes, I looked down at what she placed in my hand. It was a really nice watch with a black bezel and a few dials on the side. In the watch, there were blue markings for the time intervals and the strap was a kinda strap-thing. Not a velcro, but the kind that fits perfectly around the wrist.

"I know it's not much, but I thought this was the perfect thing to give to you. I saw it in a Muggle magazine." She said as I continued to look at the watch. "I also read that you could put some things of your own in this, I really hope you like it." She looked up at me as she finished. I stopped looking at the watch and looked at Hermione's chocolate eyes.

I went toward Hermione and hugged her. "Thank you, Hermione. I love it." I said as she returned the hug. 'She smells really nice.' I thought to myself.

"I'm glad you love it, Y/N. Have a good birthday." She said, flustered with a smile. We pulled apart and began to get ready for classes as I put on the watch. We had our classes, Transfiguration, Charms, History of Magic until finally, it was time for lunch and for Lana's gift to arrive. As we sat down and had our lunch, I kept staring at the Ravenclaw table, waiting for Lana's gift to arrive. Hermione seemed to notice me glancing at the Ravenclaw table from time to time. She put down her book and put her hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, everything alright?" She asked. "Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. I'm just waiting on Lana's gift to arrive, that's all." I said, flashing a smile at her. She smiled back at me and went back to reading her book.

I decided to hold off on watching for Lana's gift to arrive like a hawk and talk to Harry and Ron. As I was talking to them, I heard some strange words coming from my left, coming from none other than Seamus. He was waving his wand over a goblet and kept looking in it, as if he was expecting for it's contents to change.

"What's he doing?" I asked Ron. "He's trying to turn water into rum. Actually managed a weak tea yesterday until-"

Ron was cut off from telling me what happened when a large boom and a flash occurred to my left. As we turned to the left, we saw Seamus' goblet had exploded and he was left with ash and char on his face.

"Seamus, mate. Why are you even trying to make rum? The teachers will notice if you're off your rocker." I asked. Seamus just let out a little grunt or something like that.

And the moment that I've been waiting for had finally arrived. A flock of owls came through the hall and began to deliver letters and in my case, Lana's present.

As the owls delivered their packages, one dropped a couple of letters and a package down to our table. I opened the letters and began to open them, which were from Mum and Luna.

Dear Y/N,

First off, I want to say Happy Birthday to you and your sister! Can't believe the two of you are twelve now. But also, I wanted to congrat you on getting Gryffindor, although most of our family are Ravenclaws.

"Yeah, yeah, Mum, everyone keeps saying that." I said to myself with a small smirk.

But anyways, I'm proud of you, sweetheart. First of the family, big honor! Oh, before I forget, I put something in the letter as a present. It was a matching set of necklaces your father got for us when we were in Hogwarts. It's only fitting that you and Lana have them as well. He would be so proud of you and so am I. But sadly, this is where I must end my letter. Please send an owl back when you can!

-Love, Mum.

I looked back in the envelope and pulled out a necklace with the shape of a wolf which was made of steel. "My father's necklace, huh?" I said, amazed at the quality.

"Woah! Cool necklace, Y/N!" Harry called out to me as I slipped it on my neck. "Wicked!" Ron added. "It looks really awesome!"

"Thanks, mate. It was my father's, actually. Mum gave his necklace to me." I said.

"Your father's?" Hermione asked. "It looks quite nice. But if I could ask, you never talk about him, how come?"

"Oh, um. He died when Lana and I were babies." I said, looking down on the necklace. "I don't really like to talk about it a lot."

"Oh, I'm so sorry then, Y/N." She said as she put her hand on mine and intertwined my fingers with hers, leaving us with a blush on both our faces. "It's okay, 'Mione." I said with a smile, looking up to her face. "It's just that I really don't like to think about it but it's okay."

She understood and let go of my hand and let me open the other letters. "Okay, so now I just have letters from my cousin Luna." I said to myself once again as I read Luna's letter with her dream-like voice in my head.

Dear Cousin Y/N,

I hope you and Lana are doing well at Hogwarts. And my wishes on your birthday today. Daddy and I thought we should give you something that would help you in the later months, so we got you a pair of charmed gloves for the winter. It will warm your hands when you are feeling cold. I really hope you do like them and I hope Lana likes her gift as well. I do hope the Nargles won't bother you when it is winter there. They hide in mistletoe, you see.

"You and your Nargles, Lu. Maybe you'll see one when you come here for your first year." I chuckled at my younger cousin's words.

Anyway, Daddy and I are doing well after what happened with Mum. It's been a year since her accident. I do miss her very much. But at least Uncle Langden is keeping her company.

"Yeah, at least they are up there together." I said with a glassy look in my eyes, which Hermione took notice of and took my hand again and held it tight. She smiled at me as I looked at her.

Please do come visit us sometime, Y/N. I miss you and Lana so much. Please take care.

Love, your cousin, Luna.

As I wiped the tears from my eyes, I took the package that came with Luna's letter and opened it, revealing a pair of fine-crafted faux leather gloves that felt nice to the touch with gold and blue lining on them. "Wow, these feel amazing! Can't wait to use these in the winter!"

Lana POV

As the owl dropped a package and a couple letters onto the Ravenclaw table, it also dropped a present I ordered for Y/N. I ordered a bracelet for him that said, "To my twin brother, my best friend, there is no better friend than a brother, and there is no better brother than you." I really hoped that he liked it. I read through the letters from Luna and Mum, who gave me a pair of earrings that she made herself, which I adored and a necklace of an eagle that was Mum's when she was in Hogwarts with Dad. Padma, whose sister was in Gryffindor with Y/N, liked the necklace I had and helped me put it around my neck.

After I looked at the necklace a bit more, I then looked at the mysterious package as I wondered what was inside it. I tore the packaging of the parcel and found a faux leather-bound journal with my name engraved into the cover and once I opened it, I found a message from Y/N.

Lana,

May this bring out endless individuality and creativity within yourself.

You are brilliant and incredible, Sis.

-Y/N

As I finished the message, I got up from the Ravenclaw table and ran over to the Gryffindor table and found my brother talking to Hermione, Ron and Harry and hugged him from behind. "Thank you, Y/N!" I said "I really love the present you got me!"

"You're welcome, Sis! I'm really glad you like it!" Y/N said as I pulled him from his seat. "Hey, do you lot mind if I borrow my brother for a moment? I'll bring him back." I asked the other three Gryffindors, who nodded at the question. As I pulled him over to the hall, I then made sure that I had his present, which was in my pocket. While I pulled the box, I spotted something on his left wrist. "Hey, what's that?" I asked as I pointed out the object on his wrist.

"Oh, it's the present 'Mione got for me." Y/n says as he showed me his wrist, which adorned a black watch with dials on the side and blue markings for the time. "I really love it. It was really nice of her to give me this."

"Mione? That's cute." I said, as I chuckled at the nickname. "But damn, that's a really nice watch! She bought it for you?"

"Yeah, out of a Muggle magazine, think that's what she told me." He said as he looked at the time.

"Oh, I forgot, I got you this!" I said as I brought the bracelet from behind me and put it on his right arm since the watch was on his left. "Oh, thanks!" He said. "Oh and look at the message on the metal plate, I hope you like it." He looked down at the message as I said that and smiled. He then looked up to me and hugged me. "Thank you, sis. I really love it. You're the best sister ever, Lana." Y/N said as I returned the hug. "You're welcome, Y/N. Love you, bro."

"Love you too, Lana." Y/N then let go and looked at the time. "Oh, we should get back to our tables, lunch is almost over. Good luck with class!" He said as we walked back into the Great Hall and to our respective tables.

Hermione POV

As Y/N came back to our table, he came back to the sight of Neville's Remembrall emitting red smoke. "Um, 'Mione, what's the ball doing? I have had my fair share of explosives for one day." He asked me.

"Don't worry, that's a Remembrall. The smoke only turns red when the person holding it has forgotten something. Neville just forgot his robes, that's all." I reassured him. "Oh, thank god." He said as he smiled with relief, which made me smile back at him. I haven't gotten to know Y/N a lot but it really seems that I've known him most of my life. He just makes me really happy.

"Oh, what's that?" I asked as I pointed to his other wrist which now had something on it. "Oh, it's a gift from Lana. It has a really sweet message on it!" He said as he showed me the message. "Aw, that is so sweet of her. It must be really nice to have a sister, isn't it?" I asked.

"Yeah, sometimes we get on each other's nerves, but it's still nice to have each other." He said as he adjusted the bracelet.

"Oh, hey, someone broke into Gringotts, listen." Harry said to us as he read the article in his hands. "Believed to be the work of dark witches or wizards unknown, Gringotts goblins, while acknowledging the breach, insist that nothing was taken. The vault in question, number 713, had in fact been emptied the same day. That's odd, it's the vault Hagrid and I went to."

"It's probably nothing big, mate." Y/N said as we went to our next class. "Besides, Gringotts is one of the safest places in the Wizarding World."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As lunch ended, we went to our other classes until finally, we had our flying lesson with the Slytherins. "Great, another hour to spend with Malfoy." Y/N said as we watched them line up with the brooms. Madam Hooch then came down the line and instructed us to step to the left side of their broom with our right hand over it and say, "Up".

Harry stood next to me with his hand over his broom and said, "Up" once. And to his and my surprise, the broom flew straight into his hand. I stared at him, questioning myself how he would be able to do that in one go. Malfoy did the same and like Harry's, it flew into his hand and he grinned at everyone else.

I then looked down to my broom with my hand out. "Up. Up. Up. Up." I continued to say to no avail. Hooch instructed us more as some still struggled.

"Hey, 'Mione." Y/N, who stood on my left, called out to me. I looked at him and saw that his broom was in his hand. He then put his broom down on the ground and looked back to me. "Try it like this. Try to clear your head and close your eyes." He said to me. I followed what he said and closed my eyes. "Just focus on the broom and say, 'Up'."

As I did as he said and closed my eyes, I shouted, "Up!". I felt something fly up into my hand and as I opened my eyes, I found the broomstick firmly gripped in my hand. I looked to Y/N and smiled at him with glee as he blushed and smiled back.

"Up!" We heard from the last Gryffindor in the line, which happened to be Ronald, whose broom flew up and whacked him in the nose, which caused everyone to laugh. As everyone mounted their brooms, Madam Hooch then instructed, "Now, once you've got hold of your broom, I want you to mount it. And grip it tight, you don't want to be sliding off the end. When I blow my whistle, I want each of you to kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your broom steady, hover for a moment, and then lean forward slightly and touch back down. On my whistle...3...2..." When she blew the whistle, Neville's broomstick suddenly lifted him off the ground and took off in the air.

"Mr. Longbottom!" Hooch cried out to him. "Come down this instant!"

Neville continued to freak out as he flew around the flying grounds. He managed to zoom past a statue with a sharp spear, which caught his cloak and caused him to flip off the broom. If that wasn't bad enough, his cloak was caught on a torch which made Neville fall out of his cloak and fall toward the ground.

"Everyone out of the way!" Hooch called out as she ran towards Neville, who held up his wrist. "Oh dear, it's a broken wrist." She stood up with Neville. "Everyone's to keep their feet firmly on the ground while I take Mr. Longbottom to the hospital wing, Understand?" She directed all of us. "If I see a single broom in the air, the one riding it will find themselves out of Hogwarts before they can say Quidditch!" She then took her leave to the infirmary.

"Did you see his face?" A voice chortled from the Slytherins "Maybe if the fat lump had given this a squeeze, he'd have remembered to fall on his fat arse." Draco laughed with his goons as he held the Remembrall. He must've gotten it when Neville fell.

"My god, can you shut the hell up for once and stop being such a prick?" Y/N said as he held his hand on his head. Harry then stepped up to Malfoy and held out his hand. "Give it here, Malfoy."

"No, I think I'll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to find." Malfoy shrugged as he mounted his broom and soared above us. "How 'bout the roof? What's the matter, Potter? Bit beyond your reach?" He taunted Harry.

"Malfoy, don't." The girl in Slytherin said, Pansy, I think her name was.

Harry and Y/N seemed to have enough of Draco and got on their broom. Before they had the chance to soar up, I ran over to them.

"Harry, Y/N, no way! You heard what Madam Hooch said! Besides, you don't even know how to fly." I told him.

Y/N stood still for a bit and put his broom down, since he was very reasonable but Harry ignored my warning and flew off effortlessly.

"What. An. Idiot."

Harry POV

As I flew up to Malfoy's level, I called out, "Give it here, Malfoy, or I'll knock you off your broom!"

"Is that so!" The slick blonde-haired boy said. "Have it your way then!" He chucked the ball like a Muggle baseball and I flew after it, in the way of one of the towers. I managed to catch the Remembrall, but a familiar face caught a look at me before I almost hit a window. I flew back down after Malfoy and I found most of the students, mainly the Gryffindors and a few Slytherins, cheering for me.

I heard some, "That was wicked, Harry" and "Good job, Harry" as they rushed up towards me.

"Harry Potter?" A voice called out to the Gryffindors, revealing it to be Professor McGonagall. She was the one to spot me nearly smashing into a window. "Follow me." She commanded and I followed suite, thinking I would be expelled.

'God dang it, I really don't want to go back to the Dursleys.' I thought. "I was only trying to help out.'

The elder professor signalled me to stop, and curiously enough, we were outside Professor Quirrel's classroom. I could tell from the man's stuttering about iguanas and some other crap.

McGonagall told me to wait outside as she went in.

"Professor Quirrel, excuse me, excuse me." She asked the purple-turbaned man. "Could I borrow Wood for a moment, please?"

'Who the hell is Wood?' I thought.

Quirrel excused whoever the hell Wood was and continued with his stuttering. A boy came out of the classroom and as the door closed behind him, a loud roar was heard.

"Potter, this is Oliver Wood." McGonagall said as she redirected her attention to me before she looked back to the boy . "Wood, I have found you a seeker!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few hours later, I was walking back with Ron and Y/N as a pair of Ghosts walk- err, I mean floated by, one of which was Nearly-Headless Nick. As he caught a look at me, he turned back to the ghost he was floating with.

"Have you heard?" The spectre asked the other. "Harry Potter's the new Gryffindor seeker. I always knew he'd do well." Y/N's eyes perked up from his statement as Ron's jaw fell open.

"Seeker?" Ron exclaimed. "But first years never make the house teams! You must be the youngest Quidditch player in..."

"A century." Y/N and I said in unison.

As we continued to walk through the hall, another pair of twins came along and walked behind us.

"Well done, Harry!" Fred Weasley said. "Wood's just told us."

"Fred and George on the team too. Beaters." Ron continued for the twins.

"Our job is to make sure you don't get bloodied up too bad." George said. " Can't make any promises of course. Rough game, Quidditch is."

"Brutal!" Fred continued for his brother. "But no one's died in years. Someone will vanish occasionally..." His voice got smaller through the crowd of people.

"But they'll turn up in a month or two!" George shouted.

"Oh, go on, Harry, Quidditch is great. Best game there is! And you'll be great, too!" Ron reassured.

"Yeah, take a shot, mate." Y/N added. "Maybe even in a few years, you could even be Quidditch captain!"

"But I've never played Quidditch." I told both of them. "What if I make a fool out of myself?

"You won't make a fool out of yourself." Hermione said, coming out of nowhere with Lana. "It's in your blood."

The girls then led us to a trophy case and pointed to the plaque of Quidditch players. As I saw where her finger was pointed to, I then got a good look at the name.

"JAMES POTTER, SEEKER."

"Whoa." Ron gasped in amazement. "Harry, you never told me your father was a Seeker, too."

"I-I didn't know." I managed to stutter out.

While we were looking at the plaque, Y/N was looking at the Ravenclaw players, scanning for any familiar names.

"Hey, Y/N!" Hermione called out to him. "What are you looking for?" She asked as she saw that he was staring in one place. He didn't respond.

"Ay, Y/N!" Lana then tried to call him out. "What are you doing?"

As we walked towards him, he pointed out what he was looking at. We looked at the plaque and Lana looked with the same amount of shock as her brother.

The names on the plaque read:

"LANGDEN LOVEGOOD, KEEPER AND CAPTAIN."

"ADDISON MIDDLETON, SEEKER."

"What! Your parents were Quidditch players, too?" Ron asked the twins in shock and amazement.

"We're just as amazed as you are, mate."
