Chapter 19: The Chamber of Secrets
Harry POV
The other houses had left the corridor, going to their respective common room, while the five of us followed the Professors present.
"She's not dead, Argus." Dumbledore reassured him as Filch took a look of confusion. "She has been petrified."
"Ah, I thought so." Lockhart said, making his presence known, despite no one asking. "So unlucky I wasn't there. I know exactly the countercurse that could have spared her."
"Really, Gilderoy?" Y/N sneered at him. "Well, go on then. Do it if you so claim to know it. Don't be shy that every other professor is here."
Lockhart looked scared as Y/N shot him a look of anger.
"But how she has been petrified, I cannot say." Dumbledore continued, as no other teacher didn't even take points away. Not even Snape. In fact, I think I saw him smirk a little.
"Ask him!" Filch said as he pointed to me. "It's him who's done it. You saw what he wrote on the wall."
"It's not true, Professor, I swear." I said. "I never touched Mrs. Norris."
"Then again, who would." Ron muttered as Filch gave him an ugly look.
"Rubbish!" Filch yelled.
"If I might, Headmaster," Snape interjected. "Perhaps Potter and his friends were simply in the wrong place in the wrong time."
'Did he just defend us?' I thought to myself.
"However, the circumstances are suspicious. I for one don't recall seeing Potter at dinner."
'Nevermind.'
"I'm afraid that's my doing, Severus." Lockhart said. "You see, Harry was helping me answer my fanmail."
"That's why Y/N, Lana and I were looking for him and Ron, Professor." Hermione said. "We just found him when he said..." She paused as she looked at me while she was still holding on to Y/N.
"Yes, Miss Granger?" Snape asked her.
"When I said I wasn't hungry." I said for her.
"We were heading back to the common room when we found Mrs. Norris." Y/n said to him. "We were tutoring my cousin and we wanted to grab Harry and Ron to get back there."
"Innocent until proven guilty, Severus." Dumbeldore said with a twinkle in his eyes.
Filch did not seem amused. "My cat has been petrified. I want to see some punishment! He knows I'm a -- a Squib!"
Well, that was true. Ron and I found some letters about some Kiwispell place addressed to Filch.
"We will be able to cure her, Argus." Dumbledore assured. "As I understand it, Madam Sprout has a healthy growth of Mandrakes. When mature, a potion will be made, which will revive Mrs. Norris." Filch trembled as he spoke.
"And in the meantime, I strongly recommend caution.. To all."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It's a bit strange, isn't it?" Hermione asked us.
"Strange?" I said.
"You, Y/N and Lana hear this voice, a voice only the three of you can hear, and then Mrs. Norris turns up petrified."
"Coincidence?" Y/N said. "I think not!"
"You think I should have told them?" I asked. "Dumbledore and the others, I mean?"
"Are you mad?" Ron said.
"As much as I want to tell them, Harry," Lana said. "I don't think it would be the smartest idea. Even if McGonagall knew, she would most likely go mad if she knew Y/N and I were hearing it.
"Even in the wizarding world," Hermione said. "Hearing voices isn't a good sign."
"She's right, you know?" Someone said in the painting, startling us.
Y/N POV
The next day, Grandmum was teaching us something new in Transfiguration.
"Could I have your attention, please?" She asked us. "Right, now, today, we will be transforming animals into water goblets. Like so."
She then took her wand to a bird resting on a post next to her, tapping it with her wand as she spoke. "One, two, three. Vera Verto." A stream came out of her wand and the bird perfectly turned into a Goblet.
"Now, it's your turn. Who would like to go first" She asked us before she laid her eyes on Ron. " Ah! Mr. Weasley. One, two, three, Vera Verto."
"Ahem." Ron announced and silently tapped Scabbers, his rat, three times.
'Please don't do it .' Wait, who the hell said that? Surely it wasn't the rat, never seen one think that much.
"Vera Verto." Ron said. Suddenly, Scabbers contorted into a goblet shape, only it was furry as his skin, a tail moving and squeaking. Most of the class laughed at this, myself included.
"That wand needs replacing, Mr. Weasley." Grandma said as Hermione, who always sat next to me, rose her hand. "Yes, Miss Granger?"
"Professor, I was wondering if you could tell us about the Chamber of Secrets." What we saw yesterday must still be in her head. I don't blame her, that was really scary.
Grandma looked around the room to receive curious looks from all of us. "Very well. Well, you all know, of course that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slyhterin. Now three of the founders coexisted quite harmoniously. One did not."
"Three guesses who." Ron said to Harry, who was right in front of us.
"Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. In other words, pure bloods."
Draco decided to glare at Hermione, who then glared back with an angry look. I turned to Draco and gave a look of my own, which mentally told him, 'Say anything, and I will hurt you more than I did at the pitch.' He stopped and looked back to Professor McGonagall.
"Unable to sway the others, he decided to leave the school. Now, according to legend, Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in the castle, known as the Chamber of Secrets. Well, shorty after departing, he sealed it, until that time when his true heir returned to the school. The Heir alone would be able to open the Chamber, and unleash the horror within, and by so doing, purge the school of all those, who, in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study magic."
"Muggle-borns." Hermione added. I looked to her with a look of concern in my eyes as I took her hand in mine and intertwined my fingers with hers while she did the same. If this was true and the Chamber was opened, ever Muggle-born in Hogwarts was in grave danger.
Including Hermione. And I'm not gonna let that happen to her. I care for her too much. Grandma nodded in an affirmative gesture.
"Naturally the school has been searched many times." Grandma said. "No such Chamber has been found." she then turned around before Hermione asked again as she still held my hand.
"Professor," She said again as Grandma turned to answer her curiosity. "What exactly does legend tell us lies within the Chamber?"
"Well, the Chamber is said to be home to something that only the Heir of Slytherin can control. It is said to be the home of a monster."
I felt Hermione's hand shiver with her body as I squeezed her hand for comfort while Ron and Lana turned to look at Malfoy again, this time with a look of horror and hate, respectively.
Moments later, class was dismissed. Most of the Slytherins didn't even try to speak, but one was always the chatterbox he was. Before the five of us left the classroom, Grandma stopped us for a moment.
"Lovegoods," She asked. "Can I speak with you for a moment?"
Harry, Ron and Hermione looked to us as we nodded and told them we will be with them in a moment.
As we walked back to her desk, we saw that Grandma adopted a look of worry on her face.
"How are you both after what you saw yesterday?" She asked us.
"We're a little shaken, but I'd say we're okay." Lana said. "Right, Y/N?" She nudged me in the elbow.
"Hm?" I said. "Yeah, I guess. It was quite creepy to see a message in blood."
"You're worried, aren't you, Y/N?" Grandma asked suddenly.
"Worried? What are you talking about?" I said quickly. "I'm not worried."
"Yes, you are." She said calmly. "You're worried about Miss Granger, aren't you?"
"How did you-"
"Y/N, I know how close you are with her." She chuckled. "You care about her, don't you?"
"Alright, you got me, Grandma." I sighed. "Yes, I do care for Hermione. She means a lot to me and I care about her very much."
Lana turned her head to me and rubbed her hand on my shoulder.
"I understand, Y/N. Absolutely." Grandma said. "If this is true and the Chamber does exist, I know you both would protect Miss Granger at any cost, yes?"
"Absolutely." We both said in unison.
"Good." She said with a small smile. "Now, I believe you have to return to them. I will see you both soon." She then escorted us outside her classroom, where we found the three waiting for us.
"Do you think it's true?" Ron asked. "Do you really think there is a Chamber of Secrets?"
"Yes. Couldn't you tell?" Hermione said. "McGonagall's worried. All of the teachers are."
"She definitely is." I said. "She was just talking to us about it and how we were feeling about it."
"But if there really is a Chamber of Secrets," Harry said. "and it really has been opened, then that means..."
"The Heir of Slytherin has returned to Hogwarts." Lana said. "The question is, who is it?"
A certain group of Slytherin then walked past us as Ron glanced at them. "Let's think... who do we know who thinks all Muggle-borns are scum?"
"If you're referring to that pompous prick..." I said
"Of course!" Ron reasoned. "You heard him: 'You'll be next-"
Before he could finish his point, I glared at him.
"I heard him." Hermione said. "But Malfoy, the heir of Slytherin?"
"Well, maybe Ron's right, Hermione." Harry said. "I mean, look at his family have been in Slytherin for centuries."
"Crabbe and Goyle must know." Ron said. "Maybe we could trick them into telling."
"Ron, they are both dumb, but not that dumb." Lana said.
"There must be another way." Hermione said. "Mind you, it would be difficult, not to mention, we'd be breaking 50 school rules, and it'll be dangerous, very dangerous."
I looked at Lana, who was literally thinking the same thing. "We might have something that would work." Lana said to us.
"It's a very secretive formula, but it will work." I finished. "Polyjuice Potion."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hermione POV
The next day, Y/N, Lana and I were looking in the library for the book, "Moste Potente Potions" which had contained the recipe for Polyjuice Potion. It was in the restricted section, but luckily Professor Lockhart was thick enough to sign a note for us to obtain it. We just had to look in and get ready. Today was Y/N's first Quidditch match as a Chaser and he was still quite nervous.
"Here it is. 'The Polyjuice Potion.' " I said as I found the page. "Properly brewed, the Polyjuice Potion allows the drinker to transform himself temporarily into the physical form of another."
"Do you mean, if Y/N, Harry or I drink that stuff, we'll turn into Crabbe and Goyle?" Ron asked.
"Seems like it, mate." Y/N said.
"Wicked! Malfoy will tell us anything."
"Exactly. But it's tricky." I said. "I've never seen a more complicated potion."
"Well, how long will it take to make?" Harry asked.
Lana looked in and her eyes widened. "A month."
"A month?" Harry exclaimed. "But if Malfoy is the Heir of Slytherin, he could attack half the Muggle-borns in the school by then.
"I know. But it's the only plan we've got."
Y/n then looked down at the watch I gave him last year. 'Oh, crap. Harry, we have to get ready, the match starts in 20 minutes." Harry then nodded, and before the both of them could leave, I pulled Y/N in a corner where no one else was.
"Hey, what's up?" He said nervously. Gosh, he must be really nervous, I've never seen him like this.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "You've been freaking out since breakfast, I just wanted to check on you."
"If I'm honest, it's my first match as a Chaser." He said. "I'm just really scared I'll make a fool out of myself."
"You're not going to! Quidditch is in your blood, remember? Your mum was a Seeker and your dad was a Keeper. And a captain!" I said. "You're going to do great, I know it!"
He blushed lightly. "Thanks, 'Mione. I needed that."
I smiled at him. "Of course. Oh, and before you go."
I hugged him tightly and as I let go, I stood up on my toes, laid my hand on his cheek and kissed the other. I whispered in his ear, "Good luck. I believe in you."
He smiled at me and mouthed, "Thank you so much." before he joined Harry to get into his Quidditch uniform.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We were in the middle of The Quidditch Match. Gryffindor was going against Slytherin and Harry and Y/N were ready to win. Lana, Luna, Ron and I were in the Gryffindor stands, cheering them on along with the other Gryffindors.
"Another goal for Slytherin! They lead Gryffindor 90 to 30!" Lee Jordan announced. The Gryffindor team were doing good, Y/N got nearly all of the Quaffles that got in his way and scored them for Gryffindor. George was batting away one of the bludgers away with his club, but the unexpected happened.
This bludger changed course. Zooming towards Harry and Y/N.
Harry noticed the Bludger flying towards him and moved out of the way, but this bludger had a mind of it's own. It only focused on Y/N and Harry. The Bludger was now aiming for Harry, but before it could strike him, Y/N flew in the way and the Bludger struck him in his place, hitting him as he fell to the ground as Harry looked in shock.
"Y/N!!!!" I yelled as I ran out of the stands. Before I did, I noticed Harry flew off and took his chance to catch the Snitch. While I ran down with Lana, Luna and Ron, Jordan's voice boomed, "Harry Potter has caught the Snitch! Gryffindor wins!" I heard a thud followed by another.
'Please, don't be dead, Y/N. Please don't be dead.' I kept thinking to myself. As we got down to the pitch, I saw Professor McGonagall rushing down with a worried look on her face as she was next to Y/N. Harry was right next to her, now clutching his arm and watching him.
The Bludger was still zipping around in the air, so I decided to do something about it. I pulled out my wand, pointed it to the Bludger and shouted, "Finite Incantatem!" The Bludger exploded into thousands of little pieces as we ran towards Harry and Y/N.
"Thank you." Harry said.
"Are you okay?" I asked him. "What happened to Y/N? Is he okay?"
"No, I think my- I think my arm is broken." Harry said.
"Y/N is unconscious." Professor McGonagall said. "He is alive, Miss Granger. He just needs to rest in the hospital wing."
"Not to worry." Lockhart announced. "I will fix that arm of yours straight away and wake Y/N up."
"No, Not you!"
"Oh, poor boy doesn't know what he's saying." Lockhart falsely said as if he had done this before... "Now this won't hurt a bit. Brackium emendo!"
But it didn't fix Harry's arm.
He had removed all of the bones in Harry's arm.
"You can no longer feel any pain." Lockhart said as he took Harry's hand and folded it to Harry's bewilderment. "And heh-very clearly, the bones are not broken."
"Broken?!" Hagrid bellowed. "There's no bones left!"
"Much more flexible, though." Lockhart said, ignoring him. "Now, to wake Y/N."
As he made his way to Y/N, I stood in front of him, protecting Y/N from anything he might try.
"No, absolutely not." I said to him. "I'm not letting you near him."
Before Lockhart could say another word, a voice beckoned him too.
"Miss Granger is absolutely right." Professor McGonagall said. "You clearly do not know the proper way to heal a student's arm, what is to say that you would put my grandson into a coma?! You try anything like this again, Gilderoy, and you will face Professor Dumbledore."
Professor Lockhart looked almost scared as he walked away while Professor McGonagall looked at me. "Miss Granger, I am going to tell you and Miss Lovegood a Hover charm so that Madam Pomfrey can heal him and Harry. Take your wand to his body and say "Levioso". It is very similar to what Professor Flitwick taught you last year."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lana POV
Hermione and I cast the spell on Y/N's body while Ron helped Harry up. The spell Grandma told us didn't take much work and it made Y/N as Light as a feather. As we entered, Draco Malfoy was being treated by Madam Pomfrey, but he was making a fuss out of things as always.
"Oh, Mr.Malfoy, stop making such a fuss, you can go. Out of my way, out of my way!" She said as she dismissed Malfoy. 'Should've brought them straight to me. I can mend bones in a heartbeat -- and wake someone up from a hit like that-- but growing them back..."
"You'll be able to do it, right?" Hermione said worriedly. "Fix Harry's arm and heal Y/N?"
"Oh, oh, what's going on?" Y/N feebly said from a hospital bed before he hissed in pain and clutched his side. I smiled at the thought my brother was alive while Hermione hugged him as hard as she could while he hugged her back, even if he was still in pain.
"Oh, I'll be able to, certainly." the nurse said. "But it will be painful. You're in for a rough night, Potter. Regrowing bones is a nasty business."
She went to Y/N, whose hand was still held by Hermione carefully, and did her check up on him. "Lovegood, your rib was cracked by that Bludger, so you need to stay the night too. But you both can leave tomorrow." She said as she poured some Skele-Gro into a glass for Harry to drink and gave it to him. As he sipped from the glass, he groaned in disgust.
"Well, what did you expect?" Madam Pomfrey retorted. "Pumpkin juice?"
Harry and Y/N then got comfortable as they sunk into their beds. I hugged both of them as Ron and I waited for Hermione.
"You did really good today, you know that?" Hermione said. "You scared me when the Bludger hit you, I was so worried!"
"I know, I'm really sorry, 'Mione." Y/N said to her as he laid back. "But it was about to hit Harry, so I took my chances."
"Regardless, that was really brave of you." Hermione said as she rubbed his cheek. "I'm really proud of you. Just take care tonight, okay?"
"Okay, Doctor Granger." He teased with a smirk. "What else does the lovely doctor recommend I do?"
She blushed hard and giggled. "Well, this doctor just wants you to rest! And for you to take this." She then brushed his hair gently and placed a small kiss on the top of his forehead. "I'll see you tomorrow, Y/N. Take care." She then joined us as she said goodbye to the boys.
"So, Hermione..." Ron asked with a smirk. "Do you fancy Y/N?"
Hermione blushed to herself as he looked back as his eyes grew. "You do fancy him! Just wait till I tell him!"
I then looked at him with a glare in her eyes. "Ronald Billus Weasley, don't you dare tell my brother!"
'I want to see how long it takes for them to know that they like each other!' I mentally told him.
"So don't utter a single word about this!" I finished in real life.
"Okay, Okay!" Ron said frighteningly. "Wait, how do you know my middle name?"
"Ginny told me."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry POV
Y/N and I were currently resting. Well, Y/n was in his hospital bed. I was currently suppressing the pain that the Skele-Gro was giving me.
"Kill. Kill... TIME TO KILL!" The voice from two days ago was back and Y/N was moving a lot in his bed before he woke up from a crack.
"Hello!" A small voice said, which revealed itself to be a small creature with long ears and nose who had some bandages on his hands. He had large eyes full of fear.
"Dobby?" I asked. I haven't seen this punk ever since he ruined the Dursley's dinner party.
"Wait, this is Dobby?" Y/N asked as Dobby walked to him. "He's a house elf? Anyway, it's nice to meet you in the flesh, Dobby."
"Y/N Lovegood!" Dobby shrieked quietly. "Treating Dobby with kindness? What has Dobby done to deserve it?"
"Nothing." Y/N said. "You're a living being, like everyone else. You should be treated with kindness."
"Thank you kindly, sir." Dobby said. "But Harry Potter should have listened to Dobby! Harry Potter should have gone back home when he missed the train."
"It was you... you stopped the barrier from letting Ron and me through!"
"Indeed. Yes, sir."
"You nearly got Ron and me expelled!
"At least you would be away from here. Harry Potter must go home! Dobby thought his Bludger would be enough to make Harry Potter see that--"
"Your Bludger?" I said. "You made that Bludger chase me?"
"Yes, sir. Dobby feels most aggrieved, sir. Dobby had to iron his hands." He then showed off the bandages on his hands, front and back."
"You'd better clear off before my bones come back, Dobby, or I might strangle you!"
"Uh-huh-huh." Dobby assured. "Dobby is used to death threats, sir. Dobby gets then five times a day at home."
"Wait, you made the Bludger chase Harry," Y/N asked. "Why did it chase me too? You mentioned that Harry was your target, not me."
"Yes, sir. Y/N Lovegood is very smart." Dobby explained. "Dobby's masters keep saying Y/N and his sister are very powerful wizards and witches, because of--"
Before Dobby could go on, he stopped himself by taking a lamp and banging it on his head. "Dobby should not have said that! Bad Dobby! Bad Dobby!"
"Hey, hey, Dobby!" Y/N said as he took the lamp from him and placed it back. "Don't hurt yourself, please."
"I don't suppose you could tell us why you're trying to kill us?" I said.
"Not kill you, sir, never kill you!" Dobby shrieked again. "Dobby remembers how it was before Harry Potter triumphed over He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. We house elves were treated like vermin, sir. Of course, Dobby is still treated like vermin..."
"Why do you wear that thing, Dobby?" I asked again.
"This, sir? It is a mark of the house-elves' enslavement. Dobby can only be freed if his master presents him with clothes. Ah! Listen. Listen! Terrible things are about to happen at Hogwarts. Harry Potter must not stay here, now that history is to repeat itself."
"Repeat itself?" I asked once more. "You mean this has happened before?"
"Ah! I shouldn't have said that! Oh, bad Dobby! Bad!" He banged his head against the wall.
"Dobby, stop it! Stop it! Stop, Dobby!" Y/N said to the house elf.
"Tell us, Dobby. When does this happen? Who's doing it now?" I asked.
"Dobby cannot say, sir! Dobby only wants Harry Potter, Y/N Lovegood and Lana Lovegood to be safe!"
"No, please, tell us Dobby!" Y/N said. But it was too late. Dobby had disappeared from the room with a snap of his fingers.
"Put him here." A voice said. "What happened?"
Y/N looked at me. "Get back in the bed and pretend you're asleep!" He said.
"There's been another attack." The voice of Dumbledore said.
"I think- do you know- I think he's been petrified, Madam Pomfrey." McGonagall said. "Look! Perhaps he managed to take a picture of his attacker."
A poof was heard along with a sigh of disappointment.
"What can this mean, Albus?"
"It means.... That our students are in a lot of danger."
"What should I tell the staff?"
"The truth. Tell them Hogwarts is no longer safe." Dumbledore said solemnly. "The Chamber of Secrets has indeed been opened." They all left and as they did, we both managed to peek at who the victim was.
It was Colin Creevy. The first Muggle-born victim.
