Chapter 12: Through The Trapdoor

Y/N POV

The five of us were getting ready to take our exams. It has been a while since Harry and I were attacked physically and mentally by supposedly Lord Voldemort, but honestly, I don't know what could kill me at this point, Voldemort or these damn exams.

True to Hermione and Lana's word, we were given Anti-Cheating quills for written exams (I wasn't gonna cheat anyway, Ron might try to though.) and of course, practical exams too. Professor Filtwick called us to see if we could make a pineapple dance across a desk, Professor McGonagall watched us turn a mouse into a snuffbox and Snape, being the obvious creep he is, watched us try to make a Forgetfulness Potion. I did the first two perfectly from the Professor's comments, while Snape just looked in my cauldron, huffed and went on to look at others.

The last exam with History of Magic, which was honestly the least looked forward for all the students since all the questions were about old wizards and some other stuff in the wizarding world. As Professor Binns told us to put down our quills and roll our parchment, I felt the need to cheer, which was what all the other students were doing.

"That was far easier than I thought." said Hermione as the five of us left the classroom to go toward the Black Lake. "I needn't have learned about the 1637 Werewolf Code of Conduct or the uprising of Elfric the Eager."

"Can we please not talk about the bloody exam?" Ron asked. "It makes me ill to know I didn't answer right."

"Oh, alright then." Lana said. "Hey, Y/N, what did Snape think of your potion for the exam?"

"I said don't!" Ron whined.

"You implied the history exam, not the others, Ron." I said. "The man just huffed and walked away."

As we made it to the Lake, we found the Weasleys twins and Lee Jordan trying to tickle the squid's tentacles while we sat by the trees. Ron and Harry sat by one tree, happily stretching their legs on the grass. Lana and Hermione sat by the other tree while I laid on the grass in between Harry and Hermione.

"No more studying!" Ron sighed with a smile. "You should look more cheerful, Harry, we've got a week before we find out how badly we've done, there's no need to worry yet." Harry began to rub his forehead, he's been doing that ever since the forest.

"I wish I knew what this means!" Harry yelled. "My scar keeps hurting-it's happened before, but never as often as this."

"Go to Madam Pomfrey." Lana and I suggested in unison.

"I'm not ill!" He continued. "I think it's a warning... it means danger's coming."

"Harry, relax, Hermione's right, the Stone's safe as long as Dumbledore's around." Ron said. "Anyway, we've never had any proof Snape found out how to get past Fluffy. He nearly had his leg ripped off once, he's not gonna try it again in a hurry."

Harry still tried to explain the feeling that he was to us, but we just kept trying to tell him to ignore it. Midway, I zoned out to think about it as well. Hagrid said that only he and Dumbledore were the only ones that know how to get past Fluffy. Unless...

My eyes widened at what I had realized. "Lana, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"Yeah, but if I'm not, I'm always reading your mind." Lana said as she looked at me.

Harry had realized the same thing and hopped to his feet. Ron stared at the three of us with visible confusion as he had just woken up. "Where're you going?" He asked.

"I've just thought of something." A shocked Harry said. "We've got to go and see Hagrid, now!"

The rest of us got up from the trees and walked behind Harry towards Hagrid's hut. "Why?" Hermione asked as she hurried to keep up next to me.

"Don't you think it's a bit odd," Harry asked us. "That what Hagrid wants more than anything else is a dragon, and a stranger turns up who just happens to have an egg in his pocket? How many people wander around with Dragon eggs if it's against wizarding law?"

"I dunno about Dragon eggs," I said "but there was someone who took a Thunderbird to America in a bloody suitcase."

"What are you talking about?" Ron asked the both of us as we arrived at the rustic hut. Harry knocked on the door, once again being greeted by Hagrid, whose sleeves were rolled up."

"Hello!" Hagrid greeted us. "Finish yer exams? Got time for a drink?"

(A/N: I was using the script For Philosopher's Stone so Hagrid's dialogue had to change to the book. )

"Yes, please." Ron said

"Ron, No." I said as Harry stepped in front of us. "We're in a hurry, Hagrid, I've got to ask you something. You know that night you won Norbert? What did the stranger you were playing cards with look like?

"Dunno." He said. "He wouldn't take his cloak off. Yeh get a lot of funny folk in the Hog's Head. Mighta been a dragon dealer, mightn' he? Never saw his face, he just kept his hood up."

"What did you talk to him about, Hagrid?" Harry persisted. "Did you mention Hogwarts at all?"

"Mighta come up." Hagrid continued. " Yeah... he asked what I did, and I told 'im I was gatekeeper here. He asked a bit about the sorta creature I look after... so i told him... and I said I'd always want a Dragon... and then...I can't remember too well, cause he kept buying me drinks. Then he said he had the dragon egg and we could play cards for it if I wanted. So I told him, after Fluffy, a dragon would be easy."

"So you thought the dragon would be easier to take care of after a three-headed dog?!" I exclaimed. "Norweign Ridgebacks grow abnormally fast!"

"And did he- did he seem interested in Fluffy?" Harry asked once more calmly.

"Well -- yeah --- how many three-headed dogs d'yeh meet, even around Hogwarts?" Hagrid answered. I'm surprised that he's still calm about this. "So I told him, Fluffy's a piece o' cake if yeh know how to calm him down, just play him a bit o' music and he'll go straight off ter sleep--"

He suddenly changed his face to a gasp of realization. "I shouldn'ta told yeh that!" He yelled. "Forget I said that! Hey--where're yeh goin?"

The five of us left the hut in hopes to get back to the castle quickly. Hopefully we can get there in time.

Lana POV

"We've got to get to Dumbledore." Harry said. "Hagrid told that stanger how to get past Fluffy, and it was either Snape or Voldemort under the cloak."

"It must have been easy to get it out of Hagrid when he's drunk." Y/N said. "Hopefully Dumbledore believes us."

"He has to, right?" I asked. "He's a wise old man, no offense to him, so he would most likely know?"

"We'll just have to-" Harry said before a voice suddenly called out to us.

"What are you five doing inside?" Professor McGonagall, our supposed adoptive-grandmother asked us.

I'm having deja vu.

"We want to see Professor Dumbledore." Hermione said truthfully to her.

"See Professor Dumbledore?" The elder witch repeated. "Why?"

"It's sort of a secret." Harry said, which clearly wasn't the best thing to say as the professor glared at him.

"Professor Dumbledore left ten minutes ago." McGonagall said in no visible tone. "He received an urgent owl from the Ministry of Magic and flew off for London at once."

"Bon dieu." Y/N said under his breath. Hermione was thinking the same, cause she didn't pinch him for swearing.

"He's gone?" Harry asked in astonishment. "Now?"

"Professor Dumbledore is a very great wizard, Potter. He has many demands on his time-"

"But this is important."

"Something you have to say is more important than the Ministry of Magic, Potter?"

'To be fair, his whole existence is more important than the Ministry.' I thought.

'You're not wrong, sis.' Y/N said or thought back. Oh, we did figure out that we could talk mentally through our thoughts. Kinda like telepathy.

"Look, Professor." Harry said as he took in a breath. "It's about the Philosopher's Stone."

Professor McGonagall was extremely shocked as she heard the name come out of Harry's mouth and equally as surprised that the five of us knew.

"How do you know-?" She asked as she stuttered.

"Professor, we think - we know - that someone's going to try and steal the Stone." Y/N said. " We have to talk to Professor Dumbledore."

She looked at us with another look of shock, almost like the one she made when she came after the troll incident. Come to think of it, she might have been worried that Y/N and I(who she may regard as her grandchildren) were in danger.

"Professor Dumbledore will be back tomorrow." She said. "I don't know how you know about the Stone, but rest assured, no one can possibly steal it, it's too well protected."

"But Professor-" Harry began.

"Potter, I know what I'm talking about." She cut him off. "I suggest you all go outside and enjoy the sunshine."

Harry, Ron and Hermione decided to go out of McGonagall's earshot to talk while Y/N and I stayed back to talk to the Professor.

"Excuse me, Professor?" Y/N asked. "We have a question to ask you."

The older woman formed a small smile on her face as she looked down. "What is your question?" She asked kindly.

"We've been wondering about what you've told us before you gave us detention." I said. "About our mum and how you said you raised her?"

"Oh, yes. I am sorry for not going further into that subject." She said in a kind manner. "What about her?"

"Well, since you said that you raised her..." Y/N began.

"Does that make you our grandmother?" I finished.

She kindly smiled once as she nodded. "Yes, that does. You both are just as smart as her. But you both should go back to Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley and Miss Granger and join them in the sun." She then gave us both a non-discret wink.

As we made our way back to the others, we could hear Harry once he was in our earshot. "Snape's going through the trapdoor tonight. He's found out everything he needs, and now he's got Dumbledore out of the way. He sent that note, I bet the Ministry of Magic will get a real shock when Dumbledore turns up."

"Sounds good." I said. "But what can we-"

Suddenly Hermione gasped while we all wheeled around to find Snape staring down at us.

Speak of the goddamn devil.

"Good afternoon." He said in his usual manner.

We all stood silent as he spoke.

"You shouldn't be inside on a day like this." He continued with a smile.

"We were-" Harry began.

"You want to be more careful." He interrupted. "Hanging around like this, people will think you're up to something. And Gryffindor really can't seem to lose more points, can it?"

Harry stood silently as he continued to stare. He then put his attention on Y/N and I and stared at us intensely. Then he did the unexpected.

'I know you both are Legilimens and you think someone is going to take the Stone.' Snape said through his thoughts. 'The true thief will make their move tonight. If you are planning something, do it carefully.'

"Be warned, Potter." Snape said as he broke the connection and put his attention back on Harry. "Any more nighttime wanderings and I will personally make sure you are expelled. Good day to you." He then turned around and went on his merry way.

I looked to Y/N as he looked back to me. "You heard Snape, right?" I whispered . "Yep, and did the man tell us to do it carefully?" He whispered back. "Totally weird."

"Regardless, we have to be ready for tonight." Harry said as Snape was out of earshot. "We have to stop him."

But I kept wondering to myself. 'Snape said the true thief, so who does he mean?'

Timeskip to night. (Mainly cause I want to get past more dialogue and into the traps!)

It was now nightfall and I was waiting in the Ravenclaw Common Room, waiting for Y/N and the others. Soon enough, I heard the guardian of the Common Room ask them the usual riddle, this week's being, "Where do Vanished Objects go?" and the answer, which I told Y/N was "Into non-being, which is to say, everything." The portrait slid open, revealing Y/N sticking his head out of Harry's Invisibility cloak, along with Hermione, Harry and Ron underneath it.

I'm still surprised Harry had let us four come, still he went on about Voldemort killing his parents, in which we had to remind him that Voldemort killed our father too. He was telling us that we could be expelled if we did go with him, but Hermione and I had gotten 112 on Filtwick's exam and Y/N got one of the highest marks in McGonagall's exam (Not because she is our grandmother), so they wouldn't kick us after that.

Y/N told me that Neville was onto them and said that he didn't want to lose points for Gryffindor, so Hermione had to use, 'Petrificus Totalus.' or the full Body-Bind on him. But he also said he was proud of him in a way, since he stood up for the first time.

We moved around the halls with the slightest of steps to make sure we weren't caught by a teacher or a ghost. (A/N: Dang it, I forgot about Peeves. Please forgive me!) Eventually we made our way to the the 3rd Floor corridor, where the door was fully left ajar.

"Well there you are." Harry said. "Snape's already got past Fluffy." he then turned to the four of us. "If you want to go back, I won't blame you. You can take the cloak, I won't need it now."

"Don't be stupid." Ron said.

"We're coming." Hermione said.

"You've got to be mental if you think we're gonna leave, Potter." Y/N said.

"I agree with my brother, we're there with you, Harry." I said.

And with that, Harry pushed the door open, where low growls were heard.

Fluffy was apparently resting and couldn't see us. An object was laying near it's palm.

"What's that at its feet?" Hermione asked.

"It looks like a Harp." Y/N said.

"Snape must have left it there." Ron said.

"It must wake up the moment you stop playing." Harry said "well, here goes." He then pulled a small flute out of his pockets, put it to his lips and began playing. It wasn't really a kind of tune but the Fluffy began to droop down from the first note. Soon enough, Fluffy's vicious growls now turned to snores as it slumped down and back to sleep.

"Keep playing." Ron told Harry as the rest of us silently walked to the trapdoor, trying to not wake up Fluffy again. As we approached the trapdoor, Ron looked back to the dog and back to the door. "I think we'll be able to pull the door open. Want to go first, Lana, Hermione?"

"No, I don't!" We both said in unison.

"All right." Ron said as he pulled the ring of the trapdoor and peered down.

"What do you see?" I asked.

"Nothing -- just black -- there's no way of climbing down, we'll just have to drop." He said.

Harry then started to wave to get our attention and then pointed to himself.

"You want to go first? You sure?" Y/N asked. "We don't know how deep it goes. Give me the flute, I'll keep him asleep."

Harry stopped playing for a few moments and Y/N silently ran over to get the flute. Fluffy twitched for a moment and before it could growl again, Y/N took the flute from Harry and started to play, causing Fluffy to go back to his slumber.

Harry went toward the trapdoor and lowered himself in. Before he was fully in, he looked up to us and said, "If anything happens to me, don't follow. Go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore, right?"

"Right." We said as Y/N gave him a thumbs up. He kept moving towards us so he could join us and keep Fluffy asleep.

Harry then let go and fell down until we heard a flump. After a few minutes, he called out, "It's okay! It's a soft landing, you can jump!"

Ron went down first, then I did, then Hermione and finally Y/N, who stopped playing and quickly went through the door.

"What's this stuff?" Ron asked.

"Must be a plant of some sort." Y/N answered. "I suppose it's here to break the fall."

Hermione looked around the plant. "We must be miles under the school."

"Lucky this plant's here, really." Ron said.

"Really?" Y/N said "Are we really? This plant's literally gripping us and not letting go!"

My brother wasn't wrong. The plant had gone to grab my legs, while it had grabbed Y/N's arm and Ron, Hermione and Harry's ankles. Hermione did manage to free herself from it, but the rest of us weren't so lucky since we were still stuck.

"Stop moving!" Hermione ordered. "I know what this is-- it's Devil's Snare!"

"Oh, I'm so glad we know what it's called," Ron said sarcastically. "That's a great help!"

"Shut up, I'm trying to remember how to kill it!" Hermione yelled.

"Well, hurry up, We can't breathe!" I struggled to say.

"Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare... what did Professor Sprout say?" Hermione asked us. "It likes the dark and the damp..."

"So light a fire!" Y/N and Harry yelled.

"Yes--of course-- but there's no wood!"

Ron started to freak out even more. "HAVE YOU GONE MAD!?!" he bellowed. "ARE YOU A WITCH ARE NOT?"

"Oh right!" Hermioen said as she pulled out her wand and pointed it to the plant, muttered something and a spark of fire came out from the tip sent the plants burning and shriveling up, dropping us down.

"Lucky you pay attention in Herbology, Hermione." Harry said as he wiped off sweat from his forehead.

"I honestly don't know how Neville enjoys that class." Y/N added. "I'm just lucky I'm passing it."

"And lucky Harry doesn't lose his head in a crisis-- 'there's no wood' honestly." Ron added. "Can you hear something?

As he said that, we all stopped talking to hear a soft noise above us, like clinking.

"Do you think it's a ghost?" He asked.

"I dunno." Y/N said. "Kinda sounds like...keys?"

"No, maybe like wings?" Harry said.

We then looked to the front of us, where a door was, waiting to be opened. Ron went toward the door to try and open it, but nothing happened. Hermione then tried using 'Alohomora' again, but the door still didn't budge.

"Now what?" said Ron.

"These birds... they can't be here for decoration." Hermione said. I looked up to watch the birds, flying, zipping and glittering...

Wait, glittering? Birds don't glitter.

"They're not birds!" I said. "They're keys! Winged Keys, you both are right!"

"Yes, Look!" Harry said as he pointed in another direction. "Broomsticks! We've got to catch the key to the door!"

"But there are hundreds of them!" Y/N said. "How do we know which is the right one?"

I looked at the lock on the door. "We're looking for a big, old-fashioned one--probably silver, like the handle." Y/N and Harry went toward the broomsticks and flew off to catch the key, but all of them zipped off before they could catch them.

"Hey, Harry!" Y/N called out. "I think I found it! It's got bright blue wings and the feathers are all crumpled on one side!" As I looked up, Y/N had grabbed the Winged-key and flew down with Harry.

"Wow, Y/N!" Harry exclaimed. "You really could be a seeker! You have a good eye!"

"Thanks, mate!" Y/N said. "But no time to be flattered, we have to get in, right?"

Y/N inserted the key into the keyhole and pushed the door open, revealing the next trap. It was a giant version of Wizard's Chess. We stood alongside the black pieces and faced the opposing white pieces. The scary thing was that all of them have no faces.

"Now what do we do?" Harry asked.

"It's obvious, isn't it?" I said as I gleamed.

"We've got to play our way across the room." Ron said with a smile.

Hermione POV

"How?" I asked with a tidbit of nervousness.

"I think," Ron said. "We're going to be chessmen." Ron then walked to the one of the knight pieces on our side and reached out to it. The piece suddenly came to life and turned down to Ron.

"Do we --er-- have to join you?" Ron asked. The knight nodded as Ron turned to face the four of us.

"I suppose we've got to take the place of five black pieces. Now don't be offended or anything, but I know Harry is not good at chess, I dunno 'bout you, Y/N or Lana."

"We're not offended.' Harry said impatiently. "Just tell us what to do."

"Lana is a better chess player than me." Y/n added. "She could help you with it."

"Right then!" Lana ordered. "Harry, you take the bishop, Hermione, you take the queen's side and Y/N, you take the king's."

"What about you and Ron, sis?" Y/N asked Lana.

"We're going to be knights."

We all took our places among the chessmen. Harry took the bishop's side and I took my place as the queen. Y/N took his place as the king, which kind of made me blush as he climbed on the piece's back.

Ron and Lana took their places and the game began. "White always play first. Look."

The pieces came around and the game continued as we lost more and more pieces, we were all standing on our pieces and Ron and Lana were still thinking about their next move. Ron suddenly perked up and said, "Yes... it's the only way... I've got to be taken."

"NO!" We all shouted at him.

"That's chess!" Ron yelled. "You've got to make some sacrifices! I make my move and she'll take me! That leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry!"

"Listen, Ron!" Y/N yelled. "You can't do that!

"There has to be another way!" I added.

"Do you want to stop Snape or not!" He snapped. "Look, if you don't hurry up, he'll already have the Stone!"

"Ready?" He called out to us with a pale expression on his face. "Here I go -- now, don't hang around once you've won."

The piece and Ron moved towards the space near the queen, and just as he anticipated, the queen made her move and crashed the piece, dropping Ron.

Lana was sobbing quietly as I screamed and Y/n scowled at the queen. Ron was knocked out and the queen took him to another side.

Then, Harry made his move and yelled. "Checkmate!"

The white King took off his crown and threw it at his feet. We all dismounted the pieces and ran toward Ron.

"What if he's-" Lana said, only to be interrupted by Harry.

"He'll be alright." Harry said as he put his hand on her shoulder. "What do you reckon is next?" He asked me and Y/N.

"We've had Sprout's, that's the Devil's Snare." I said. "Filtwick must have charmed the keys..."

"This giant chess trap must be Grandmum's to make them alive." Y/N added. "That would leave Quirrell's and Snape's."

"Okay, guess that makes sense." Harry said. "Wait, GRANDMUM?!"

"Long story. I'll explain later." He said.

"I'm gonna stay with Ron." Lana said. "You three go and get through."

"Are you gonna be good here?" Y/N asked.

"Yeah, he could use some company when he wakes up." Lana said. "Just stay safe in there, okay?"

"Absolutely." Y/N said in a serious manner as Lana stood up and hugged him. "Same to you, sis. Take care of yourself and Ron."

As the three of us spotted another door, Harry turned back to us. "All right?" He whispered.

"Yeah, I am." I said.

"Little shaken, but yeah, same here." Y/n said.

As Harry went to the door, I turned to Y/N and faced him. "Are you okay?" I asked him.

"Can I be honest?" He said, to which I nodded. "I was a little scared of how Lana reacted when Ron was knocked out. If that happened to me and I wouldn't wake up, Lana would be absolutely devastated. I didn't want to think about it, but now it's all I can think about."

Oh, wow. I haven't even thought of what would happen if Y/N would be in Ron's position. If that did happen, God forbid it, I think I would be just as devastated as Lana. Maybe even more.

"Don't you dare say that, Y/N Lovegood!" I scolded him as I took his hand. "That won't happen at all as long as I'm- er- we're around." I suddenly blushed as I corrected myself.

Y/N formed a small smile on his face. "Thank you, 'Mione. That means a lot to me."

We followed Harry, who opened the door and walked in to see a troll knocked out. "Ugh, the nostalgia. I don't miss the smell." Y/N said as he nudged the troll's arm.

"Me either." Harry and I said.

We passed through the room and into another room with nothing but a table with seven differently shaped bottles with multiple colors. As we stepped into the room, a purple fire sprang up behind us. At the same time, a black fire sprang up in front of us.

"Look!" I said as I pointed to a paper in front of the potions. I grabbed it and read it out to the boys.

Danger lies before you, while safety lies behind,

Two of us will help you, whichever you would find,

One among us seven will let you move ahead,

Another will transport the drinker back instead,

Two among our number hold only nettle wine,

Three of us are killers, waiting hidden in line.

Choose, unless you wish to stay here for evermore,

To help you in your choice, we give you these clues four:

First, however slyly the poison tries to hide

You will always find some on nettle wine's left side;

Second, different are those who stand at either end,

But if you would move onwards, neither is your friend;

Third, as you see clearly, all are different size,

Neither dwarf nor giant holds death in their insides;

Fourth, the second left and the second on the right

Are twins once you taste them, though different at first sight.

"Brilliant!" I said. "This isn't magic -- it's logic -- a puzzle! A lot of the greatest wizards haven't got an ounce of logic, they'd be stuck in here forever."

"Well, then we can solve it in a few minutes." Y/N said with another smile.

"Seven bottles: three are poison; two are wine, one will get us through the black fire, and one throught the purple fire."

"But do we know which to drink?"

"Give us a minute." Y/N said to him. He came over to me and read the paper once more with me. We then looked to the bottles and discussed them silently among ourselves. Eventually, we stopped and looked to Harry.

"Got it." I said. "The smallest will get us through the black fire -- towards the Stone."

"And the rounded bottle will get back through the purple flames." Y/N said. "But the thing is the rounded one has a couple drops for one person. Hermione, you should take it."

"What?" I said. "But, Y/N, how would you and Harry get out?"

"We can figure it out." He said. "And if Harry is going against Voldemort, I'll be there with him. You just get back to Ron and my sister."

"We were lucky once, what's to say we won't be again?" Harry said.

I began to tremble and tears fell from my eyes as I dashed to hug Harry quickly and then to Y/N, who I held tight in my arms.

"You both are great wizards, you know?" I said.

"Not as good as you." Harry said embarrassed.

"Me!" I said. "Books! And cleverness! There are more important things-- friendship and bravery and -- be careful, please."

I let go of Y/N as he gave me the potion to get out of the room. "We know which is which, yeah?"

"Positive." I assured him as I took a sip and shivered.

"It's not poison, right?" Y/N said, worried.

"No-- but it's like ice."

"You should go, before it wears off."

"Good luck, Y/N." I said. "Your father would be really proud of you, who you are."

He smirked a little. "I bet he is."

Before I left for the fire, I put my hand on his left cheek once more and kissed his right, just like I did when he protected me from the troll. We both blushed as I backed up and went toward the fire.

'I hope he'll be safe. I just know it.'

Harry POV

"So, you ready?" I asked Y/N as Hermione left through the fire. He was still blushing from the kiss on his cheek.

"Yeah, mate. More than ready." He said as he passed the potion for the black fire. "Well, then bottoms up."

As I received the potion from him, I took a sip and passed it to Y/N, who did the same and threw the bottle to the side.

"Here we go." I said. We passed through the fire, not burning us, but more a tickle. Y/N came out of the fire and braced himself as I opened the door.

There was someone already there.

It wasn't Snape.

It wasn't even Voldemort.

It was Quirrell.
