Chapter 10: Norbert
Y/N POV
Some time had passed ever since Harry, Lana, Ron and I went to the Mirror of Erised and we made sure to tell Hermione about it. Well, everything but me and her kissing in it's reflection. Maybe if what the mirror showed me was true, I would probably tell her in the future. After that, Harry revealed that he kept going to the mirror to see his parents until Dumbledore found him one night.
"Harry, I get you want to see your parents, but it's not a good thing to do!" Lana said as Harry looked at her.
"Yeah, mate." I continued. "We're in the same boat since we lost our dad, but we don't go back to the mirror." As much as I wanted to see Hermione and I in the mirror again, it would be wise to not go, or I would get addicted to coming and going to the mirror.
"Yeah, I suppose you're right." Harry said as he put his hand to the back of his head. "Besides, Dumbledore had it moved, so no-one but him knows where it is.
Lana and I thought it would be best not to tell them that we could read minds, it might freak them out. We did do a little research into that topic of how we could in the library when we were alone and as it turned out, we were known as Legilimens, people who have magically navigated through people's minds. Muggles called it mind-reading, but wizards didn't use the term. Known Legilimens were Albus Dumbledore, (of course) a woman named Queenie Goldstein, Salazar Slytherin and the Sorting Hat, which Slytherin enchanted it with.
"Well, regardless," Hermione said. "Did you find anything about Flamel?"
"Nothing, 'Mione." I said. "All we found was an interesting face-book and useless facts. We have to look a bit more for a while."
A couple of months later
It is now springtime here and along with that, it was time for our first-year exams. Hermione, Lana and I were studying while Ron and Harry were playing with their chocolate cards.
Hermione looked up from her books and watched the other boys with the cards. "Look at you playing with your cards. Pathetic!" She said. "We have finals coming up soon and Y/N is the only one out of you three that is actually studying!"
I blushed behind my book as the bushy-haired girl mentioned me. Before she could look to me, Ron spoke up.
"I'm ready!" He said confidently. "Ask me any question."
"All right then, wise guy." I said. "What are the three ingredients in a Forgetfulness Potion?
Ron pondered in thought and then looked dejected. "I forgot."
I scoffed at his reply as Hermione giggled. "Might as well have taken the potion itself, mate."
"And what, may I ask, do you plan to do if this comes up in the final exam?" Hermione asked.
"Copy off you lot?" He suggested.
"Can't do that either, from what I heard from Professor Filtwick, we're given special quills with a anti-cheating spell." Lana said.
"That's insulting!" Ron said as he hit Harry in the shoulder, to which he put out his hands with a straight face. "It's as if they don't trust us!" He flipped another card. "Dumbledore again."
Just then, a couple of laughs were heard down the table. As we looked up to see where it came from. Neville came in hopping as his legs were stuck together. Oh, wait, they were stuck together.
"Leg-Locker Curse?" Ron asked Neville as he approached us and nodded.
"Malfoy." Harry muttered as I put my hand into a fist under the table. Hermione took notice of my movement and quietly put her hand on mine, which loosened my fist and allowed Hermione to slip her fingers into mine, making us both blush without anyone noticing.
"You have got to stand up for yourself, Neville." Ron continued.
"How?" Neville asked. "I can barely stand at all!"
From down the table, Seamus stood up excited with his wand at the ready. "I'll do the counter-curse!" He shouted.
"No, that's all I need... You set my bloody kneecaps on fire!" Nevilled shouted back.
"Have to agree with Nev, Finnagan." I said. "We don't want another explosion again!"
Seamus put his wand away. "I don't appreciate the insinuation, Longbottom, Lovegood." He said, frustrated . "Besides if anyone cared to notice, my eyebrows have completely grown back!" He then walked off, revealing a spot of his head to have absolutely no hair.
"But in all seriousness, I'll do the counter-curse." I said as I stood up, pulled out my wand and pointed it to Neville's legs. His legs pulled apart from each other, letting Neville move his legs freely. "Thank you, Y/N!" He said as he ran off.
"Hey, I found him!" Harry said, as he handed a card to Ron.
"Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark Wizard Grindelwald in 1945-" Ron began.
Wait, Grindelwald? Where else have I heard of that name before?
"Go on." Harry said.
"-for his discovery of the 12 uses of Dragon Blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner Nicholas Flamel!"
"I knew he sounded familiar!" Harry said as he smiled. "I read it on the train when we first came here!"
With that, Hermione beamed. "Follow me!"
Hermione POV
I brought the others to the library and had them sit down at a table while I grabbed a book that I had checked out a while before. As I came back, I slammed the book on the table, where Y/N and Lana were invested in their books, while Harry and Ron were doing work. They all jumped up at the sound and a few, "Hushes" were heard.
"I had you looking in the wrong section!" I said as I sat down between Lana and Y/N. "How could I be so stupid? I checked this out a few weeks ago for a bit of light reading."
Ron looked amazed. "This is light?"
"I mean, I'm on for reading and interesting books, but you say this is light?" Y/N said as he put down his book.
"Of course!" I answered as I read from the book. "Nicholas Flamel is the only known make of the Philosopher's Stone!"
"The what?" Harry and Ron asked.
"Honestly, don't you two read?" Lana asked them as she looked into the book. "The Philosopher's Stone is a legendary substance with astonishing powers. It will turn any metal into pure gold and produce the Elixir of Life, which will make the drinker immortal."
"Immortal?" Ron asked.
"Means you'll never die, smart one." Y/N quipped.
"I know what it means!"
"Shh!" Harry said.
"The only stone currently in existence belongs to Mr. Nicholas Flamel, the noted alchemist, which last year celebrated his 665th birthday!" I said. "That's what Fluffy's guarding on the 3rd floor. That's what under the trapdoor... the Philosopher's Stone!"
"Well, guess we have some more work to do!" Lana said. "There may be some Ravenclaws that may know a bit more, so I'll go and ask them. I'll see you lot later." She then hugged me and Y/N and patted Harry and Ron on the shoulder.
Harry and Ron then went to the common room to either study or play games.
It was probably the latter.
The only one that stayed was Y/N, who was looking for more books and continued to read his book. If I could tell, he was trying to look for something.
"Hey, Y/N? Are you okay?" I asked him.
"Hmm?" He said as he poked his head from the book. "Oh, yeah, I was just looking for answers to something, that's all. Don't worry, 'Mione."
He then looked through the book, as if he was obsessed with figuring out something.
"Are you sure?" I asked again as I walked to him. "You looked stressed about something. Is something bothering you? You can tell me if you want."
He looked up to me. "Okay then. It is a bit of a secret, so let's talk about it somewhere else."
"Okay, so let's go to the Common Room." I suggested. "We should have some privacy there," I took his hand and we walked towards the Fat Lady.
"You know, that was really nice, what you did for Neville." I said as we were walking together.
"Oh, yeah. I don't like bullies but I like pissing Malfoy off." He said as he chuckled. "Frankly, he and his family are a bunch of demented idiots, so he deversed to be messed with."
As we entered the Common room, we were lucky that no-one was there so we could talk. I went to one of the couches, sat down and patted the seat next to me. "So, what's eating at you?" I asked him.
"Ok, so this came up while Harry, Lana and I were looking for Nicholas Flamel?" He asked while I nodded. "When we found that book, Harry asked what the hell it was and I answered him. But when Harry heard me, he said he didn't say anything. Same thing came up when Lana and I were decoding the Mirror of Erised."
I was a bit confused at what he was saying, but he went on. "So, when Lana and I found out we could do the same thing, so we did some research when we were alone." Y/N said. "This might sound crazy, but Lana and I are Legilimens."
"What's a Legilimens?" I asked him.
"A wizard who can read the thoughts of any person around." He said.
"Wait, you're saying you can read minds?" I said. "That's impossible!"
"I can prove it!" He said. "I mean, if you want proof."
I scooted next to him so that our legs were touching and took his hand again. "I said it was impossible, not don't try," I said with a calming smile on my face, which seemed to relax him a little.
He managed a small smile. "Okay, so I never did try it intentionally, but I am going to try." He said. "I'm not gonna go into anything that you don't want to hear, okay? So do you trust me?"
I turned towards him so I was making eye contact if it was necessary. "I can always trust you." I said with another smile. He made one of his own, the same one that always made my heart flutter as his cheeks went a little red.
"Just think about anything you know of. Anything that only you know of and only you." He said calmly.
I began to think about my first time back with my parents when I arrived back at King's Cross. How my parents greeted me as I came back. How happy they were when they saw me for the first time in a few months. I felt a smile form on my face just be thinking about it.
"Okay, so I think I got something from that." Y/N said. "You were thinking about your parents and your mum said that they've missed you so much, your dad asking if you made any new friends, you felt really happy about that. And then your mum asked you if you met any-"
"Okay, okay!" I said as I put my hand on his mouth. "You've proved it! You know, I never said I don't believe you."
As I removed my hand, Y/N looked at me. "I didn't peer into anything else, did I?" He asked as he laid his head onto the couch.
"No, you didn't, you looked at exactly what I wanted you to see." I assured him while I put my head on his shoulder and hugged him. "You didn't do anything wrong. Don't worry."
"Thanks, 'Mione." He said with another warm smile. "But can you keep this a secret between you, me, and Lana? I don't want anyone else to know."
"I promise you I won't tell anyone, not a single soul." I said.
"Thank you so much." Y/N said. "You're the best."
Hearing that made my heart beat twice as fast. I continued to put my head on his shoulders as he wrapped his hand around me and put his on mine, and I slowly fell asleep.
Harry POV
Ron and I were getting our things ready for the next day. We had finished some work and we were about to get ready to tell Hagrid what we found.
"Hey, Harry?" Ron asked. "Where do you reckon Y/N and Hermione are?"
"I thought they were still in the library?" I said. "Y/N was looking through a lot of books recently, maybe she's helping him?" I didn't see them leave the library when we left, they could be there. It's like their favorite place in Hogwarts. Just like how Ron likes the Great Hall.
"We should get them along with Lana if we're going to Hagrid's." Ron said while I nodded in agreement. I grabbed my Invisibility Cloak just to be sure and left our dorms while Ron followed a while after. Before I made my way down the stairs, I stopped in awe of what I saw.
Hermione and Y/N were sleeping on the couch together. Hermione's head was on Y/N's shoulder, almost buried in his neck and her arms were wrapped around him. Y/N's head was on top of hers and his right arm was wrapped around her. Both were sound asleep and alone. It was almost cute.
"Harry, what happened-" Ron said before he saw what I saw. "Oh wow, how long do you think they've been like that?"
"Dunno, but we have to wake them." I said as I walked in front of them. "Hey, lovebirds! Time to wake up!" I said in a whisper-shout.
Both groaned and slowly realized they were sleeping together. They both stood up with a massive blush on their faces as they looked at each other and then to us. "What's up, Harry?" Y/N asked as he ignored the fact that we caught them together.
"We're going to Hagrid's, you know?" I said. "Gonna tell him we know about the Philosopher's Stone?"
"Oh right, I must have forgotten." Hermione said. "We should get Lana and get going then."
"My thoughts exactly." I said sarcastically. We proceeded to leave the Common Room under the Cloak so Filch wouldn't spot us and made our way down to the Ravenclaw Tower. And surprisingly, Lana was already waiting for us in a corner where she wouldn't be seen. Weird thing is I don't remember telling Ron, Hermione or Y/N to get here.
The five of us eventually made our way to Hagrid's hut and knocked on his door, only to be greeted by the man himself, donning an apron and oven mitts. Was he cooking something?
"Hagrid!" I said.
"Oh, hello." Hagrid said. "Sorry, don't wish to be rude, but I'm in no fit state to entertain today."
He went to close the door until Lana spoke up.
"We know about the Philosopher's Stone!"
Hagrid opened the door in surprise and astonishment of what Lana said.
"Oh."
He welcomed us into his rustic home where we took our seats. He had a table with three seats and a small couch. Ron and Lana and I took our seats, which left the couch for either Hermione or Y/N. Y/N let Hermione take the seat while he sat on the arm.
"We think Snape is trying to steal it." I said.
"Snape?" Hagrid asked the five of us before turning to me. "Blimey, Harry, you're not still on about him, are yah?"
"We just know he's after the Stone." Y/N said. "We just don't know why."
"Snape is one of the teachers protecting the Stone!" Hagrid proclaimed. "He's not about to steal it!"
Wait, that greasy haired fool was protecting the stone? Surely he can't be serious.
"You heard me." Hagrid said. "Come on, now, I'm a bit preoccupied today."
"Hang on a tick, One of the teachers?" Lana asked him. "There are more teachers?"
"Of course!" Hermione declared. "There are other things defending the Stone, Aren't there? Spells, enchantments..."
"Jinxes, curses, more dangerous animals..." Y/N added.
"That's right." Hagrid agreed with the resident brainiacs. "Waste of bloody time, if you ask me."
As he spoke, Fang, a dog that Hagrid owned as a pet decided to sniff Ron, which freaked Ron out as he shuffled away.
"Ain't no one gonna get past Fluffy." Hagrid continued. "Hehe, not a soul knows besides for me and Dumbledore." After he spoke, he realized what he had done again and repeatedly said, "I shouldn't have told you that. I should not have told you that!"
In the distance over Hagrid's fireplace, there was a cauldron placed in front of it with an egg in it that began to rattle which caught Hagrid's attention. He stood up in excitement and grabbed the egg with his oven mitts and placed it at the table where we were sitting. Y/N and Hermione stood up from their shared seat and walked to us to see the egg.
"Uh, Hagrid?" I asked nervously. "What exactly is that?"
"That? It's a..." He began to stutter like Professor Quirrel. "It's um..."
"I know what that is?" Ron exclaimed to us. "How did you get one, Hagrid?"
"I won it. Off a stranger I met down at a pub." Hagrid confessed. "Seemed quite glad to be rid of it, as a matter of fact."
The egg rattled once more and cracked multiple times. The pieces flew off in all directions as a small creature crawled out. And not just any creature.
It was a baby dragon.
"Is that...a Dragon?" Hermione asked the group.
"Not just any dragon, 'Mione." Y/N said as he went towards it. "That's a Norwegian Ridgeback."
"My brother, the one my parents visited in Romania, Charlie, he works with these there too!" Ron exclaimed once more.
"Isn't he beautiful?" Hagrid asked. "Oh, bless 'im, look. He knows his mummy. Hallo, Norbert."
Norbert the dragon looked at Hagrid but then turned his head towards his right, where Y/N, Hermione and Lana were standing. Y/N stepped forward towards Norbert and put his arms out for the dragon.
"WAIT, Y/N!" Hagrid bellowed. "DON'T GO NEAR 'IM!"
"You don't know what it could do!" Hermione cried out to him while Lana was frightened for her brother's life and Ron and I were freaking out.
But Norbert did the unexpected.
He hopped into Y/N's hands, he was small enough to fit in both his palms, crawled in a circle and rested his body in his palms. Before he could, he hiccuped and blasted a small ball of fire towards Hagrid's very bushy beard, which completely surprised Y/N as he watched the tiny dragon.
Hagrid quickly patted out the fire on his beard and looked towards Y/N. "Alright, Laddie, that was a bit reckless." He said. "But yeh calmed Norbert down, eh? You're good with these creatures, aren't yeh?"
"I suppose." Y/N managed to say as he put the resting dragon on the table while Hermione took his arm and wrapped it with hers protectively. "I just felt something and it happened, just like that."
Hagrid let out a "Ah" and nodded with him. "Eh, who's that out the window?"
I looked towards the window he was referring to and looked out to find a figure in a Hogwarts robe with a green outline.
Damn it.
Not him. Anyone but that blond git.
Draco Malfoy saw the dragon.
We are so screwed.
