Chapter 3

Sara's POV

'Ugh... Where is this, I wonder...' I opened my eyes. I was in a room. The walls looked pretty grey, and there was a door right to my left. 'Am I looking at the ceiling? Why am I sleeping here?'

I took a deep breath. 'I'm Sara. An incredibly normal person attending school. Good. Start with what you know best.'

Where could this be? 'Err, I think I went home... Right, and then mom...!'

"Mom!" I called out, remembering her, laying there helplessly on the floor. I quickly tried to stand up, but I couldn't. 'Is there something on my head?'

I shut my eyes. 'Right now... it seems I'm lying down. On a bed, maybe?'

Fearfully touching my head, I felt some kind of belt... or machine...

'Am I tied to it? It feels like I'm being restrained.'

"No way... Ack... What's the meaning of this?!" I muttered to myself.

My temperature rose, and suddenly, a fear awakened me.

"No!! Where is this?! Somebody!!"

No one responded, and I wiggled, trying to get out. It seemed I could only move my right leg freely. The rest of my limbs were firmly restrained.

"Someone...!" I tried again, knowing there wouldn't be a response. I was about to raise my voice, to scream, but then suddenly went quiet. 'The stalker. He'd... harmed my mom... And he brought me here...'

'I wonder... am I... going to be... killed?' I shuddered at the thought. I had to get out.

"Sara! Are you there?!" I felt a pang of relief as I heard Joe's voice next to me.

"Joe? Is that you? Are you next to me...?!"

"Yeah...! But I can't move! Can't you do something?!"

'Joe's in the same situation?'

While listing plans on how to get out, I heard a noise. It was getting louder by the second. And it was getting rather annoying.

"A phone?" I muttered, instinctively going to check my pockets. Nothing was to be found. "Joe, is that yours ringing?"

"Eh...?" Joe sounded confused. "Oh- you're right... Something in my pocket...! Here...!" He said excitedly. After a bit more shuffling, Joe called again. "Hello?! Whoever you are! Help us!"

"...Beginning voiced guidance." someone spoke into the phone, ignoring Joe's cry for help.

"Huh?" Joe seemed as confused as me.

"The First Trial will now begin. Sara, and Joe. Find the key hidden in this room. Then, remove your strains. If you cannot do this before the time limit expires, the device on your beds will activate... And your bodies will be crushed with a thud. By all means, please enjoy this thrill with all your body and soul. The time limit is a healthy five minutes. And note that there is only one key, so please discuss who will use it."

'What... the heck is this... The First Trial...? We'll die... in five minutes?"

"Waaaaagh?! Whadd're we gonna do?!" The phone call seemed to have ended because Joe started freaking out as well.

'There's no time to fret about that.'

"Joe, check your clothes!" I called him and checked myself again as well. Of course, I found nothing.

"Yikes..." he muttered. "When I took the phone from my pocket... I might've dropped somethin'...!"

"N-no way! Pick it up!"

"Got it!" I heard an excited yell from Joe, which turned to silence. I was starting to worry if everything was alright, but he suddenly shouted again. "Grabbed it! It's the key!"

"Alright!" I said, but quickly quieted down. I couldn't think for long, we were timed.

'I'm so going to regret this.'

"Hurry and use that key!" as the words came out of my mouth my chest tightened with nervousness.

'I'm going to die. But Joe has a future ahead of him, and I don't.'

"You sure...?! If I do... you'll-"

"Joe, I'm sure you can figure something out!" I said, trying to sound confident.

Joe's POV

'Sara is planning to sacrifice herself for me? I can't let that happen... But I can't die either. Ryoko...'

"Got it." I nodded to the best of my abilities. "I'll use it. Then I'll save you too! Definitely!!"

After what seemed like five minutes had long passed, I got out of my restraints. Shaking my head quickly, I jumped out of the bed.

'Dammit... That took some time. I need to save Sara somehow.'

After breathing in a few times, I looked around the room. There were four numbers on the wall of the room. '3141...' I read it out.

There was a green lock on Sara's bed. I looked at my red key.

'How do I make you green...?" Suddenly noticing a yellow box in the wall, I ran toward it. It had digits you had to input in.

'3141...' I remembered, putting in the digits. Something made a dinging noise. 'It makes a sound?! What's the point in that?!'

"Joe... if... something- something goes... wrong..." Sara suddenly spoke. "Tell my parents I loved them."

I went quiet. I've never heard Sara say those three words to anyone. Ever. Not even in a casual conversation.

"You'll tell them that yourself. Hold on. I'm halfway there." I reassured her. Truth be told, I didn't even know what to do in the first place.

"And I love you too, Joe. You were... the greatest friend anyone could ever wish to have." Sara kept going.

I softly hesitated and looked at her. Sara's eyes were staring straight at the ceiling, focusing on a single point. I opened my mouth to say something, but there was nothing to say. Looking back at the red key, I hurried myself. I was on a limit and I've accomplished nothing. I just nodded to her response, though Sara couldn't see me, and walked toward another object. It was something tied to a string. 'Is that sandpaper?'

I looked back at my key, then the sandpaper. Getting to work, I scratched at the sandpaper with the key.

"Hang on Sara. Just a bit longer." I reassured her.

"I'm going to miss everyone. It was nice, you know... being alive..." Sara was mindlessly talking now.

I wouldn't have it in me to forgive myself if my friend died right now. No. My best friend. I would never forgive myself if my best friend died because of me.

I didn't think anything was happening, but I started to see a green key peeking from underneath. This gave me determination to scratch harder.

"I'd wished I'd done more in life. I wonder what would've happened if we went to that science museum last year. Do you remember that?" Sara asked me.

"Yeah," I forced a laugh, trying to keep talking to her to calm her down. "Otaku was so mad, I remember saying he was going to take out a grenade launcher and start killing off everyone in the class until everyone was lying dead on the floor. He picked on everyone else in the class that chose to go to the history of the arts museum after that for like a week."

"He told me I dressed like a whore."

"Yeah... Even though we have a uniform. I think he was just mad."

"Joe... why did you punch him that day?" Sara asked quietly. I stopped scraping at the key, memories flooding it.

'All I could remember was a punch, yelling, being dragged away..."

No one has the right to hurt my friends." I said it pretty much without thinking, and scratched at the key again. "Besides, it was kind of fun. I broke his nose."

After what seemed like another five minutes, I got most of the red key off. Running to Sara, I plugged the now-green key to the bed she was trapped in. I promised to hold my breath until she got out. Until Sara was safe.

Click.

"It's unlocked!" I grinned.

"Really?" Sara opened her eyes, her pupils getting smaller to adjust to the light.

"I'll remove these now." I put the key in my pocket and started undoing her restraints for her.

'She's alive. Everything is going to be alright.'

Sara's POV

"Pant... pant... Thank you... Joe..." my breaths were quick, getting air through my system as quickly as possible as if my next inhale would be my last breath.

"Can you stand?" Joe ignored me, pulling the cuffs off my legs. "There's a door there. Let's get out of here pronto."

"Ah, wait! Joe!"

The lights suddenly cut off, as if someone had put a blindfold over my face.

'What are we going to do now?' I scratched my hand.

"Dammit... It's pitch black!" Joe huffed.

The Joe that saved my life. I touched my face, brought my hand down to my neck and pinched it. Hard.

'Ow.' I thought to myself. I was alive. 'If Joe hadn't saved me in time, I would probably be dead. And I treated him... harshly... I guess I could say.'

'I swear to myself, Sara Chidouin, that no matter what happens, I'll stand by Joe's side. Because he's the person that saved my life.' It wasn't the best promise, since I made it up as I went, but it was a promise.

"I can't see a thing..." I slid off the bed. To answer Joe's question, yes. I was able to stand. "I think we should go along the wall until we find something."

"Left is a dead end... Seems we can only go right." Joe replied. "I mean it Sara. Don't let us get separated."

"Right..." I nodded. We kept going straight ahead in silence. The only thing I heard were Joe's footsteps right in front of me, and my breathing. But as far as we walked, we didn't see any light. It seemed to be a very... very long hallway. Or maybe we weren't advancing much at all...

"Joe... That phone you used earlier. Could you try using that to light the way?" I asked, suddenly remembering that phones do indeed have flashlights.

"Nice one, Sara! Man, you're smart!" I could feel Joe radiating his grin at me even though I couldn't see any other color than a dark rich black for miles.

"Did you bring it?" I asked.

"Ah... I left it back there..."

"...That's alright... Guess that's that, then."

"Hmm, what could give you some light...?" Joe wondered.

We were searching ourselves, when suddenly...

"Wha Whoa?!" Joe let out his usual unformulated sentences of confusion.

"...Waaah?!" He wasn't the only one.

Wind blowing from underneath...?! My feet left the ground. Am I flying up...?

"No!! We're... falling?!" Joe exclaimed.

The floor gave away!

"Eek...!" I covered my mouth with my hand. How high...? How far are we falling...? I feel... my senses growing distant... Were we going to crash and fall? Were our deaths delayed for only a couple of minutes?

A/N: They fell and fell until they hit the pit in the deepest part of the world, the fall causing both to die in the traumatic accident. No one would ever find the bodies. No one would ever know what happened. The end.

It's a Lolbit Show
