Six Months Later
I decided to move the story ahead six months so the baby can grow accurately

Elliot and Olivia took some personal time off to get to know EJ. They were trying out different nicknames until they decided what to call him. They knew that he'd be in the hospital for a while, so they took turns to stay at the hospital with him. He seemed like a great little guy, hardly crying and hardly fussing.
It almost seemed like he wasn't even there, but they knew he was. The nurses helped both of them learn how to change a diaper for a micro premie, since Elliot's other kids were all full term. He had several different tubes running out of his body that made Liv and Elliot nervous.
They hadn't spoken about their own relationship yet. However, to everyone else, they were together. Cragen had told the brass that the two of them were together about a month after EJ was born. They weren't happy, but Cragen pulled as many strings as he could so that the two could remain partners.
In the end, he had to transfer to another unit for a couple months to give Elliot and Liv a chance under new orders to see if they could still hold out as partners as well as 'partners'. Luckily, they performed greatly professionally, not even a single hint of an argument. Cragen returned and the brass was satisfied that they wouldn't be a problem.
Liv and Elliot were working nearly separate shifts for several months. One was always here while the other was always at the hospital with EJ. That also helped the fact that they were so 'professional'.
It was about six months later when Liv cant rushing in the squad room. Elliot had been on desk duty as much as possible to avoid staying late. He wasn't happy about it, but it was for the best. He looked at Liv's excited face and stood up. "Liv, what's wrong?"
She shook her head and went to him. "EJ's coming home, El," she said loudly. Fin and Munch had just gotten through with an interview and sat down at their own desks when she said that. They both stood up too and exclaimed happily for them. Elliot didn't think he heard her right.
"EJ is okay to come home?" He repeated. She nodded with a wide grin. He laughed and embraced her, lifting her up and twirling her around with joy. "I gotta go tell the captain," he stated, Liv following close behind him.
Elliot knocked on the door to Cragen's office with a bounce in his step. Without waiting for a response, he opened the door. Cragen looked at Elliot and Liv with a weary look. "What?"
"EJ's coming home today," Elliot stated with the widest grin he could muster.
Cragen smiled warmly. "Then you two better get to the hospital and get that boy. We'll be okay for the day."
Elliot nodded and closed the door. He went to get his stuff and followed Liv out the door to the car. He couldn't believe it. Taking out his phone, he sent a message to Kathy to let her know that EJ was coming home. She wouldn't care, but she deserved to know. They were trying to find a common ground with the custody fight, since it was starting to take a bad effect on Dickie and Lizzie. Lizzie was acting out and Dickie was doing bad in school.
It was only a matter of time before either Lizzie got pregnant or Dickie was held back. Elliot wasn't ready for a grandchild yet. Kathy responded with so. He wanted so badly to go and argue with her.
It took around two hours for EJ to get discharged. They did one last series of tests on him to make sure. The staff had fallen completely in love with the little guy. He was just so charming and happy.
When they got home, Elliot took him out of the car seat. He was sleeping, which was expected, but when he picked him up, he woke and gave a grin. Elliot's heart flipped as he cuddled with EJ as Liv went to change. She came out and gave a thoughtful look around the place.
"We should have a party tonight to celebrate EJ coming home," she stated.
Elliot shrugged as he patted EJ's bottom and rocked him. "Sounds like a plan."
Liv texted everyone, including Maureen to tell her siblings if they wanted to come. Kathy had next to no choice if Maureen was going to bring them. She told Elliot she was going to get some snacks at the corner store down the road real quick. Elliot watched her leave from the couch.
They still hadn't spoken about the 'relationship', but Elliot knew they were together. They just weren't exclusive or official. EJ had started to fall back asleep after a quick diaper change and Elliot put him in his crib in the bedroom. It was hard to believe that he was finally here.
Liv came back forty minutes later with two large sacks of snacks and drinks. She set it all up in the kitchen to prepare later today. When EJ started crying, she went to see what was wrong. He was just hungry. Liv took off her shirt and undid part of her bra as she held EJ. She walked to the living room where Elliot was watching a show about this zombie that works in the morgue. (Izombie) It wasn't too bad of a show by what Liv's seen so far.
Elliot glanced at Liv then back at the TV. Freezing, he looked back at Liv who was feeding EJ. He swallowed hard, trying to ignore the feeling that was making itself present in his pants. He cleared his throat and tried to go back to watching the show, but it was hard.
"You okay, El?" He knew she realized that he was having a difficult time with that at the moment.
Ignoring the question, he decided to come out and risk it. "What are we?"
It was as if Liv knew he was going to ask. She didn't react, just continued to watch the show for a moment. Glancing at EJ, she kissed his head before turning her head to face him. "I'm not sure, El," she replied honestly.
Elliot nodded. "Well, what do you want us to be?"
She shrugged. "If I'm honest, we're already a couple, just didn't want to admit it."
She was on the same page as him. Good. "Is that okay?"
"Yeah," she smiled warmly at him, love filling her eyes, "it is, El."
He scooted closer to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder and kissed her temple. With his other hand, he ran his hand over EJ's soft bald head. He finished suckling and Liv raised him over her shoulder to burp him. Sleepy eyes and a satisfied smile, he burped loudly, causing Liv to chuckle at him. "Oh, that was a big one," she said in a baby voice.
EJ curled into Liv's chest as he went back to sleep, a smile plastered on his tiny face. "I can't believe that I didn't want him, Elliot," she stated, tears threatening to fall.
"Yeah, he's amazing," Elliot agreed, touching his little foot in his socks. Liv looked at Elliot with her tears falling. "Thank you for be here for me."
