24 days until suicide
As Astra made her way past the small crowd of people towards the lake, she took a deep breath to calm herself down. There were lots of people there, nothing would happen. She'd be safe.
When she got to the lake, she stopped walking and started searching for that boy. How would she know which guy was him? Most of the guys were with a woman, and few had kids with them.
He definitely didn't seem like the type to be married and have kids. Maybe he was, but she didn't believe it. He would've mentioned it if he did... right?
"You so pretty!"
Astra turned to see a young girl smiling up at her. Her brown hair was braided and out of her face, and her beautiful brown eyes were twinkling as she smiled up at her.
"So are you, pretty lady." Astra knelt down beside her and smiled. "Where are your parents?"
"I'm with my nonna." The girl pointed towards an elderly woman who was feeding some ducks.
"Does she know you wandered off?" Astra chuckled when the girl shook her head. "Well then, I think you should go back to her before she notices you're gone and starts to worry."
"Ok. Bye!" She skipped off back to her grandmother.
Astra smiled and stood back up. Most people there were nice, and that was one thing she liked about Florida. A lot were crazy and dumb, especially on the road when you're driving, but a lot were sweet too.
Florida was also a very crowded place, lots of people move there from around the states for multiple reasons. Astra hated how so many more people each year moved there, which just makes traffic even worse and everywhere else even more crowded.
Astra spotted a guy sitting on a bench by himself and she smiled when she started walking towards him. He was wearing a hoodie. That was weird. It was very hot out, he must've been really hot.
"Bear Cub?"
The boy looked up when she stepped in front of him, and as soon as his eyes met hers, her words got caught in her throat and her eyes widened a bit as his did too.
She was never fascinated with the color brown, it had always been a color she never really enjoyed looking at, not until she looked into his eyes. They were hypnotizing. She could get lost in them. They drew her in, then slowly let her go. But she didn't know if she wanted to go.
In that moment, brown became her favorite color.
The boy seemed to be lost in her eyes as well, because neither of them said a word for a few minutes. They just stared at each other.
Lost in each others eyes, not wanting to be found.
"Star?" The boy finally spoke when he blinked and broke the eye contact.
"Yeah." Astra sat down next to him on the bench, ignoring when he slowly scooted farther away.
Neither of them said a word, but when Orson turned to watch the ducks walking past, Astra used that moment to turn and study him. Bear Cub definitely suited him. His parents did a good job in naming their son.
His curly brown hair was a mess on top of his head, falling into his eyes. His hair looked pretty fuzzy and soft too, like a bear. He was cute. He looked tired though, dark bags under his eyes. He was paler than she expected, and just by looking at his face, she could tell he looked sick.
And not sick with a cold or fever.
Sick.
Her heart broke as she thought about what could possibly be going on in his mind for him to want to kill himself. She couldn't imagine it. It must've been horrible.
But even with dark bags under his eyes and pale skin, even if he looked exhausted, he was still cute.
She noticed he was wearing a cross necklace around his neck, and she wondered if he was religious or not. That was the only kind of jewelry he had on, the cross necklace.
"Do you want to feed the ducks?"
Astra blinked and shook her head, mentally slapping herself for staring at him. He was watching her, waiting for her to answer his question. "Oh um, I didn't bring oats or anything."
"That's fine, they have machines to get food out of." Orson pointed to one of those bird and fish food machines.
It was weird hearing the voice she had been hearing over the phone for a week now. It was nice finally being able to see a face with the voice. What made it weird though was seeing a person with the voice she had grown fond of. Sometimes voices didn't match how someone looked, and hearing his voice and seeing him right in front of her eyes, was definitely weird.
His voice suited how he looked though.
"Oh right, sorry, I haven't been to this lake in a long time." Astra stood to her feet and walked over to the food machine. "Oh, uh, do you have a quarter?"
Orson handed her a quarter immediately and she looked up at him as he watched her. He already had that coin ready for her.
She suddenly felt nervous as his eyes watched her put the coin in the machine. She spun the handle and put her hand underneath to catch the food.
"Hey, why did you change your mind about meeting up?" Astra asked him as a few ducks immediately ran over to her, waiting for food. She threw a piece of the food at them and they ran for it.
Orson slowly pulled the sleeves of his hoodie down more to cover his hands, and then he shoved them in the pocket. He swallowed, but didn't say anything.
One of the ducks came back for more food, and Astra knelt down and held one of her hands out for it. It immediately started eating the food out of her hand, and she laughed as it oddly tickled her.
"Do you want to feed her the rest?" Astra looked up at Orson, but furrowed her brows as he seemed to be staring into space. It was like he wasn't even there. He was staring at the ground, not blinking.
"Hey." Astra stood to her feet and touched his shoulder, but she gasped as he suddenly jumped and backed away from her. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I was just worried."
Orson didn't say anything.
"Do you want to feed the duck the rest of the food?" She asked again, this time holding her hand out for him. He stared at her hand for a few seconds before he slowly reached out so she could dump the food in his hand.
His hand was shaking.
Astra didn't say anything, though, as she dumped the rest of the food in his hand.
Orson turned to the duck as she stared up at him. Instead of kneeling down to feed it from his hand like Astra had done, he sat on the ground instead and held his hand out. The duck immediately climbed onto his lap and started eating the food from his hand.
Astra watched with her mouth open. She felt a little jealous that the duck liked him more, but she found herself smiling as she watched them.
It was a cute scene.
The duck ate the food and then quacked as she looked up at Orson's face. She nipped gently at his nose, asking for more food, and Astra laughed as Orson tried to gently shove her face away from his, but the duck was being stubborn.
The ducks must be comfortable around people if she was on his lap, nipping at his nose gently.
"I don't have anymore, I'm sorry." Orson said quietly. As he lifted his arms to gently push the duck away again, the sleeves of his hoodie went down a little and Astra's heart stopped for a second when she saw scars.
Long cut scars littered his wrists and arms. She noticed that some were fresh, not yet scarred, and she felt tears form in her eyes as she quickly looked away. She looked at the ground.
He was hurting. He was really hurting.
"Orson?" That was the first time she had called him by his real name, and he immediately looked up at her. His tired eyes watched as she sat down on the ground next to him.
He watched her, waiting for her to speak.
She didn't know what to say. She wanted to help him, but she didn't know how. She didn't know what to do and she hated herself even more as she thought of her sister.
She failed her. She couldn't save her, and she felt broken at the thought of not being able to save Orson.
"I'm so sorry." Tears formed in her eyes as she finally spoke, looking up to meet his eyes.
Orson didn't say anything as the tears quietly slid down her face. She quickly wiped them away but they continued to come. She couldn't stop them.
The next thing that happened surprised her, and she let out a gasp.
Orson grabbed her.
He hugged her tightly.
Her nose was immediately filled with the comforting smell of lavender and bergamot. She closed her eyes and inhaled the nice smell. He smelled nice.
She cried harder as she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him back, burying her face in his shoulder.
It was the tightest hug she had ever gotten, but it was the nicest. She felt safe. She felt warm. She knew he needed the hug just as much as she did, maybe even a little more, and she pulled him closer to her to tighten the hug. Neither of them said a word.
The hug lasted for a long time, and eventually Astra lost count of how many minutes went by. When he finally pulled away, she shivered a little as the warmth from the hug disappeared.
"Thank you." Astra whispered.
"You're going to be okay."
Astra felt more tears form in her eyes, and her heart broke all over again. He thought she was crying because of her sister. Because of what she had been going through.
But little did he know the reason she was crying was because of him. He was broken and hurting, but he hid it, and she cried because she didn't want someone else to lose a life.
She couldn't let someone else end it like her sister did. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she couldn't save, not just one, but two people.
"So are you." Astra looked up to meet those beautiful brown eyes of his. "Just you wait Bear Cub, you're going to be okay again. I'm going to save you."
"Nobody can save me Star."
"I can."
