Voices and Familiar Names

Chapter 2

I started to hear voices as I gained consciousness. I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn't. I didn't have enough strength to even open my eyelids. I tried to twitch a finger. Nothing. Since I couldn't do anything, I decided I might as well try and figure out what was going on. All I know is that I collapsed on top of some hill overlooking a camp. I heard a boy's voice who sounded a few years older than me. My thoughts were still slightly groggy, so I had to focus on what he was saying to understand.

"-she get here? Why wasn't a satyr ever assigned to her? How-"

"Calm down, Percy," I heard an older, deeper voice say. "She's fine now, and that's what's important."

"Are you sure she's fine? She hasn't shown any signs of waking up," Percy said in a concerned tone.

I wanted to let them know I was fine. I was awake, I was fine. My head was a little sore, but besides that I felt like I could run at least a few blocks. You know, except for the fact that I couldn't move. Ugh! I focused all my energy on moving my finger. I felt it twitch. Success!

"All her vital signs are fine. She should wake up any minute," I heard the deep voice say.

I finally was able to move, and they missed it. Just my luck. I had used up most of the energy I had to make my finger twitch. I heard someone sit down next to me in a chair. I also heard what sounded like a wheel chair roll up to my bed on the other side. I felt a hand touch my arm. It felt a little bigger than my hand, but not big enough to belong to the deeper voice. This must be Percy's hand.

Something clicked in my mind. Percy Jackson. This startled me. How could I know his name? Had I known him before I lost my memory? With his name, other names started to flow into my mind. Annabeth Chase. Chiron. Grover Underwood.

"Come on. Wake up," I heard Percy whisper softly. "We can't lose another camper."

Another camper had been lost? Did I know them? Were they my friend? Not knowing the answer to so many questions hurt me.

"Wait, I can still breathe, right?" I thought to myself, my thoughts becoming clearer. "Why don't I make my breathe irregular or gasp? That would get a reaction."

I gasped. Percy tightened his grip on my arm. I started to breathe in quick gasps.

"Chiron, what's happening? What’s wrong?" Percy asked with a hint of panic in his voice.

Chiron. That was one of the names that I remembered. That was the man next to me. Every scrap of information was precious to me, so I treasured knowing who someone was. Now if I only knew what he looked like, and what Percy Jackson looked like.

"Quick. Give her some nectar," Chiron said calmly and in control.

I felt Percy let go of me and I heard his footsteps walk a few steps away. He returned with hurried steps after only a few moments. I felt something trickle down my throat. It was warm and tasted like fresh oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. It comforted me and filled me with strength. The soreness in my head faded to nothing. My eyes shot open. I sat straight up, but immediately felt dizzy and lay back down.

I looked to my right and saw who must be Percy Jackson. He had dark hair, and sea green eyes. He looked about 14. His face had concern written all over it.

"Are you feeling alright?" He asked.

I nodded. "Yeah. I feel fine; except for I can't seem to sit up without feeling like I just went on a Merry-go-round to fast."

Percy sighed with relief and his face relaxed. "Don't worry. That will go away. For a second there, I was really worried."

"How long have I been here?" I asked.

"You've only been here over night."

"That's good. For a second I was worried I'd been passed out for days or something."  I looked at Percy and felt a sense of familiarity. "Have we met before?" I asked.

Percy shook his head. "I don't think so. Why?"

"You just look familiar. Besides, if we met before I wouldn't remember. I just showed up in the woods without any memories."

Percy's look of concern returned. "You can't remember anything?"

"Nope. Well, after I woke it took me about five minutes of trying to remember but I did figure out my name, age, and my birthday. Besides that, my past is a complete mystery."

"Well, what is your name?"

"Ashley."

Percy smiled. "Mine's Percy, Percy Jackson."

So that tidbit of information I remember was correct. But if I didn't know him from before, how did I knew his and Chiron’s name?

"We will look into you're missing memories later, Ashley, but for now you need rest," Chiron told me.

I turned to face him. Chiron was the name of a middle-aged man with brown hair and a frown scruffy beard in a wheelchair. He looked serious and grave. I had the strangest feeling that he could walk, and the wheelchair was a disguise. I don't know why I thought this; it had just slipped into my mind. Suddenly I found myself spurting, "Chiron, I know you're a centaur you don't have to stay cooped up in the wheelchair." I don't know why I said that, but as soon as I said it I knew it was true. Chiron looked startled and when I glanced at Percy he looked surprised, too.

"How did you know that?" Chiron asked me, looking at me with a peculiar expression I couldn't place.

"I-I don't know." I shook my head. "It just sort of fell out and I realized it was true after I said it."

"We will discuss this later, but for now rest. Percy, join me outside."

I watched Percy walk beside's Chiron as Chiron rolled away in his wheel chair. I shook my head again. How did I know that? If he was a centaur, was all of Greek mythology true too? Suddenly, I gasped. I sharp pain began in my head. I put my hands up to each side of my head, squeezing my head to try and make the pain leave. I felt as if there was a rust metal spike being driven through my temple. Once again, I screamed as I passed out. My last thought was that this was the second time I'd passed out in 24 hours.

Thanks for reading this! Tell me what you think because I don’t really know if this was good or not. I’d really appreciate it. :)
