Dreams in Foggy Rooms

Sorry it's taken so long! School started and I just got really behind, but here it is now! I hope you enjoy it. :)

Chapter 3

        I looked around, trying to get my bearings. I couldn't tell if I was in a room or not. It seemed to just be white. Everything was kind of foggy white, everything blurry. I couldn't tell if there were walls or if I was on an open plane. The only thing that stood out in all of the foggy whiteness was a figure. It was a girl who seemed to be my age. She was right in front of me, but she had her back facing me. She was sitting cross-legged and seemed to be fully consumed in whatever she was holding in her hands. She had long brown hair that reached her waist.

        "Hello, do you know where we are?" I asked. Well, I tried to ask. The sound seemed to be absorbed by the white fog surrounding us. I took a step on the hard white floor. Usually, it probably would have made a large sound. Now with the white fog, it sounded like I was treading on soft carpet.

        I knelt down besides the girl and looked at the girl's face. She was really quite pretty. She looked like who you would expect to always be popular in school, who all the other girls were jealous of. A smile played across her perfectly colored lips. She had beautiful sea green eyes filled with intelligence and life. She didn't seem to notice me though, even when I waved my hand in front of her face. I looked down at the object in which her green orbs were absorbed in. It was a book. It was open to the first page which she seemed to be reading.

        At the top of the page, it said simply "One." Then it had a symbol that looked like the top of a trident. Right below that, it read "I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher." There were a few lines of space and then it read, "Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood." I quickly read through the page. About three-fourths of the way down the page, a sentence sent me rigid. "My name is Percy Jackson."

        Suddenly, the girl seemed to turn into fast motion. Her hands were rapidly turning the pages at an inhuman speed, her eyes just a green blur. They were going so fast they almost seemed to glow. As she finished the book and closed it, she returned to normal speed. She turned the book over and set it down. I saw that the name of the book was The Lightning Thief. She slowly folded her arms in her lap and froze. My head was spinning. What just happened? I looked at the side of her head, wondering who she was.

        To my surprise, she slowly turned her head to face mine. Once her eyes met mine, thoughts started flowing through my mind. Thoughts that weren't exactly mine, but felt familiar all the same. They all had to do with the names I'd had run through my mind before. A story about Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, and Grover Underwood going on a great quest. Just as suddenly as she had faced me, the girl turned away. As soon as our eyes were no longer meeting, the thoughts stopped. The thing is, though, I still remembered everything that had run through my mind. It was as if all of the girl's knowledge from the book had been directly transferred into my mind. I fell back, my hands flying out just in time to catch me. How was this happening?

        I was dizzy with all the new knowledge that had been stuffed in my brain. I was having a hard time concentrating. In my slight daze, I glanced down at the book in front of her. I cocked my head. It was different now. The title now said The Sea of Monsters. The girl picked it up and flipped to the first page. I slowly made my way back to my knees, still slightly dazed, and glanced at the first chapter title. "My Best Friend Shops for a Wedding Dress" Wow, Percy wrote the most interesting chapter titles.

        Suddenly, she sped up again. She went into super human speed, turning the pages so rapidly it was just a white blur. Her eyes were glowing again and I was getting just the tiniest bit scared of her. She finished and flipped the book over, just as she had done with The Lightning Thief. She folded her arms in her lap, just like before, and froze. I saw her head turn and looked away. I didn't really want to go through that again. Think of everything you'll learn though. A voice said in the back of my head. "Yeah, but what if I don't want to know all that," I told the voice. The thing was, I really did. With knowing so little about myself, I wanted to know everything I could. Slowly, and a little bit reluctantly, I turned my head and met her eyes.

        It happened again. So many thoughts blurring through my mind, it was like a blizzard. I couldn't sort any of it out. At least, not while it was coming in. I just caught little pieces of information. This time, as far as I could tell, something had happened to Grover so Percy and Annabeth had to save him. The girl finally broke eye contact and I collapsed besides her. I closed my eyes and sorted through my information. Now that the information was no longer flying through my mind, I could actually understand it. Right, so in the first book Percy didn't know he was a demigod. He learned he was the son of Poseidon and had to go on a quest with Grover and Annabeth. I won't bore you with the details, but I could remember everything now.

         Okay, now for the second book. It seemed as if Grover had been kidnapped while on a quest. Annabeth and Percy had to save him. I'm sure you don't want to hear every detail, but I was amazed at how perfectly I knew everything. It was as if I'd read the book myself. I finally figured out what Percy meant about the wedding dress, which I was super confused about at first.

        I opened my eyes and sat up. Now that I finally had my thoughts in order, I wanted to see what she was doing now. I slowly moved my eyes to the book at her feet. It read something different again. Now it read The Titan's Curse. Well, didn't that just sound like candy land? The girl unfroze and picked the book up. She opened to the first page. I looked down to see what the chapter title was this time. "My Rescue Operation Goes Very Wrong." Then she started flipping the pages. This time, it wasn't inhumanly fast though. Her eyes were moving way faster than any human’s eyes should be able to, but her hands were flipping the page at a rate of about one page per second. Not super human, but not slow enough to be able to read it.

        This time, though, something happened that wasn't like before. This time she stopped at chapter 6. The chapter title was "An Old Dead Friend Comes to Visit." "That sounds pleasant," I thought sarcastically to myself. I looked up to see if the girl was actually done or not. That was my mistake. I wasn't ready when I looked her in the eye. It wasn't as bad this time since it was only five chapters worth of information, but it was still a mini whirlwind in my brain. She looked away much sooner than before. Luckily, I didn't feel the need to collapse this time. I thought of what I'd learned. Suddenly I had a thought that wasn't mine. It didn't even feel familiar like the knowledge I had learned earlier. It felt like a voice was speaking in my mind.

        "The end of chapter five was last night."

        That's all it was. One sentence, but it made sense. So, last night I had woken Percy from his dream or after his dream he found out about me. The missing camper was Annabeth. Of course he was upset. He couldn't have dealt with losing another camper right after losing Annabeth.

        I heard a little "ahem" that was muted by the fog and turned my head towards the girl. She was holding the book and was holding it out to me. She seemed to be asking me to take it. I cautiously reached out and took the book. I waited for her to explain it, and then realized that she probably couldn't. After all, the fog sucked the sound. I was barely able to hear her little "ahem".

        I looked at the book in my hand. What did she expect me to do? I looked back at her. She didn't seem to have that creepy aura about her anymore. Now she seemed like a regular girl who wanted me to read this book. She rolled her eyes at me and held up six fingers. Oh, she wants me to start reading chapter six. Why she couldn't just mentally send it to my brain, I hadn't the slightest idea. Thinking about it, I was kind of glad though. I was already getting sick of collapsing every time she mentally emailed me information.

        I opened the book to chapter six. I started reading. I was really enjoying the experience of physically seeing the words and reading them.  I reached the end of chapter six and glanced up at her. She nodded her head as if saying Keep going, you're not done yet. I kept reading and was really enjoying reading. Were kids supposed to enjoy reading? I couldn't remember. To be honest, I really didn't care. I was enjoying this and I didn't care about anything else. I got to chapter eight and quickly glanced up at the girl again. She rolled her eyes and nodded her head. Well, the rolling of eyes was uncalled for. I kept reading and just as I finished the eighth chapter, she reached out and snatched the book from me.

        I looked up in surprise. She looked at me in sympathy, as if I was going to death row or something. I really didn't like that look. She suddenly reached her hand up and I flinched and closed my eyes. I honestly wasn't expecting her to move her hand that close to my face. I squinted my eyes open to see what she was doing. Her fingers were in a flicking position right in front of my forehead. She mouthed "Sorry." and then flicked my forehead. As soon as her fingers touched my forehead, I felt myself falling back. The white room around me disappeared and there was only darkness. I closed my eyes and just waited for it to end.

                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        This time, I didn't have any trouble opening my eyes. They flew open and I turned my head towards where Percy was sitting before. He wasn't sitting there anymore, though. Instead, there was a boy who looked a year or two older than Percy.
        "Good, you're awake. How are you feeling?" he asked.
        I slowly sat up and was happy to feel no sign of dizziness.
        "I feel dandy," I told him. "Can I get up now?"
        "If you're sure you're alright..." That was enough for me. I quickly sprung out of bed. I looked down to see I was still wearing the same clothes as when I collapsed. Good, I really didn't want to lose anything that might connect me to my past.
        "How long was I out this time?" I asked him.
        "Only a few hours," he told me. "Are you sure you're alright?"
        "I feel great. Like I could run a mile. Actually, not really. That doesn't sound like a lot of fun. I could run a mile if my life depended on it, but I'd rather not," I stopped realizing I was rambling and quite possibly talking too fast for him to understand me. "Um, where's Percy?"
        "He's at breakfast, but you'll be sitting with the Hermes cabin."
        "Right, of course. I've not been claimed yet. Well, I'll just be off to breakfast then," I said while starting to leave.
        "Do you know where it is?" He asked me, seeming confused by my behavior. I suppose I was being a bit confusing. Oh, well.
        "Yeah, I saw it right before I collapsed. I'm sure I can find it again. Thanks for your help!" I called over my shoulder.
        He looked completely confused as I walked out the door. I tried to remember what everything looked like the night before. Strangely, a map popped into my mind. It was a map of Camp Half-Blood. I closed my eyes and studied the map in my mind. "Okay, so I just walk past the cabins in a U-shaped and that takes me to the mess hall." My eyes popped back open.
        "Okey doke," I said to myself out loud. "Here we go."
        I kept my distance from the cabins as I walked. There was a sort of aura around them that I wasn't quite ready to deal with after my super strange dream. The camp looked pretty deserted until around the last cabin I saw the mess hall.
        The mess hall had a table for each god. I immediately noticed how some tables were filled and others had hardly anyone sitting there. I looked over the tables, looking for Percy. Sure, I now knew the name of a bunch of the campers because of my "prophecy" dream but I hadn't actually met any of them besides Percy. I found Percy sitting alone at a table. I knew that was Poseidon’s table and that I was sitting at the Hermes table, but Percy looked lonely and I wanted to sit next to him.
        I resisted the urge and made my way nearer to the pavilion. Percy saw me coming and quickly stood up and walked over to me. As he made his way over, I saw some eyes following him and landing on me. I felt a little uncomfortable with all the new eyes, but I hid it the best I could. I smiled at Percy as he came closer.
        "It's good to see you up and standing," Percy told me as he came to a stop in front of me.
        "It feels pretty good to be up and standing without feeling like I'm on an amusement park ride," I replied.
        "I'll take you to talk to Chiron and Mr. D to get the welcome talk after breakfast," Percy explained. The way he said "welcome talk" made me not feel so excited about getting it. "Until then, you'll be sitting at the Hermes table to eat."
        He pointed over at the fullest table. I picked out the Stoll brothers. They were the only two that looked almost exactly alike and they were sitting next to Nico. Nico was sitting at the very end of the table.
        "Okay," I told Percy. "I'll talk to you after breakfast then." I started walking away when a though struck me. "Wait."
        Percy had already started walking back to his food when I spoke. He turned back around with a questioning look on his face.
        "If it's breakfast, when did I wake up?"
        "It was about five in the morning," he informed me.
        "Oh. How long were you in the infirmary?"
        Percy started looking a little bit sheepish. "Only a few hours."
        "Well, sorry to have kept you up. You probably didn't get much sleep last night then."
        "Oh, no!" He immediately started. "It wasn't a problem. I just wanted to make sure you would be alright."
        "Thanks." I smiled. Then I started towards the Hermes table again. I could feel lots of eyes still following me and was starting to feel the slightest bit self-conscious. As I sat down next to Nico, Chiron stood up.
       "I would like for you all to welcome our newest camper, Ashley."
        I heard someone from one of the other tables shout, "What's her last name?"
        I looked down at the plate in front of me. I was sure my face was starting to turn red.
        "Ashley, has had the unfortunate happenings of losing her memory," Chiron boomed. "For now, we know only her first name."
        I already knew how the plates worked from "the dream", so I immediately wished for some pancakes with maple syrup. It appeared on my plate and I smiled. I started eating. After a few bites, I turned to Nico.
        "Hi, I'm Ashley as you probably heard," I introduced. "What's your name?" Yes, I already know his name, but it would be kind of creepy if I said his name without anyone telling me.
        "I'm Nico di Angelo. So you lost your memory?"
        'Yeah, for now."
        "Do you remember anything? How do you remember it? How did you get here without your memory?"
        "Let's see if I can answer those in order. I remember my name, age, and birthday. I remembered by focusing really hard, and even then it took a few minutes. I got here by stumbling through the woods for a while."
        "Cool!"
        I couldn't help smiling. For some reason, though, Nico's sense of enthusiasm gave me a feeling. I'm not sure how to describe it. The closest thing I could think of to describe it was foreboding. After Nico and I's little talk, I scarfed down my breakfast and then took a long chug of milk from the magical glasses. I saw Percy getting up as well as quite a few other campers. It seemed as if breakfast was over. Well, looks like it's time for me to get my little welcome talk. Whoopee.
