Chapter 22: Left or right
"I just about to leave you here!" Dagon bellowed, forgetting to stay quiet.
Aileen whipped around and saw her two guards strewn on the ground along with the Priest and Dagon and Adrastea poised in yelling positions.
"GET THEM!" she immediately shouted.
Dagon put the sword back in his scabbard and untied Adrastea, the both of them jumping off the scaffolding and dashing for a side street.
"Do you know where you're going?" Adrastea asked following Dagon as he darted in between side alleys and up staircases.
"I would be lying if I said yes," he answered distractedly.
The two were afraid to look back, knowing that those winged soldiers would just fly after them, probably gaining very quickly. If they wanted to get out they would have to figure out a better way than out running the soldiers.
"Quick, in there," Dagon instructed, pointing to an old shed up a flight of stairs.
Adrastea obeyed and bolted for the door, Dagon right behind her.
The building was old and musty with broken crates scattered across the floor and piled in corners. They were probably used for emergency wood.
"Well that bot us a little time but they'll start searching the buildings soon," Dagon muttered, hitting the walls and stomping on the floor for other ways to exit.
"Dagon," Adrastea began, watching as he pulled open a trap door.
"About earlier-"
"Get in," Dagon cut her off.
No need for things to get awkward especially when they would quite possibly die.
Adrastea obeyed once more without comment, much to Dagon's surprise, and climbed down the ladder into a dark room with earth walls and a wooden floor.
"What did you expect to find down here?" she mumbled, feeling the walls.
"Chandra said that if we got into any trouble look in the cellars. These platforms jut out from the side so if you go deep enough you'll probably come out on the bottom."
"Yeah and fall to your death," Adrastea answered.
Dagon looked at her and was surprised to see that this time she was actually, sort of, smiling at her own joke! Or more like 'sarcastic remark' but it was more of joke for the fact that she was not actually in a bad mood.
"Chandra said that each cellar should have a trap door that leads onto a ladder. Its how we got here so I know its true."
"Wait...Chandra told you all of this?" Adrastea asked skeptically.
"Yup!" Dagon answered, stomping on the ground.
"How would she-"
"Found it! Here give me a hand."
Adrastea got up and walked over to where Dagon was brushing dirt off the wall. The dirt came off except for in a square area. The trap door.
"Clever, very clever," Adrastea muttered.
"Right, ladies first!" Dagon said, opening the door and making a sweeping motion.
Of course he expected for Adrastea to object, which was only a natural assumption considering previous events and her behavior at those times, but once again Dagon was surprised by her simple reply of, "With pleasure." and she climbed on into the wide tunnel.
A bit stunned at first Dagon quickly regained his composure and climbed in after her. To his delight he could see streams of light coming from the end. Dagon quickly grabbed the strap on the back of the trap door and pulled it shut.
"Hopefully that will slow them down for a bit," he said quietly.
The two crawled slowly through the tunnel not wanting anything to cave in and it took them about two minutes before Adrastea called back to Dagon saying she had found the opening. It opened out onto a rope ladder and neither of them were quite sure where it led. However Adrastea wasted no time in getting onto it and making her way down. Tunnels were not her favorite thing and she was not positive if they had shaken Aileen and the shoulders.
Carefully placing one foot after the other down the rope ladder Adrastea made her way down, constantly looking back up to where Dagon was watching, waiting for her to reach some kind of destination.
"Find anything?" he asked impatiently.
Adrastea squinted her eyes and looked below, seeing a dark hole in the side of the cliff.
"Sort of. I think its some kind of entrance. The ladder leads straight to it," she answered, climbing the last few steps to the bottom and jumping into the hole.
Sure enough it led to two tunnels about seven feet tall and just wide enough for a full grown man to fit through. Dagon had already started down and Adrastea waited for him to make it to the surprisingly cozy cliff side 'patio'. It reminded her of a life size mole hole.
Dagon quickly swung off the ladder and seemed relieved that they did not have to crawl any further.
"The question is...Which one leads back out?" Adrastea spoke, glancing from one to the other.
They were both equally intimidating with nothing but darkness to greet them.
"Did the others come with you?" Adrastea suddenly asked, wondering where the others would be.
"Just as far as the jail. Deirdrie was the only one who came with me to the town square...I hope they got out alright."
"Well how did you get in? If we find the right direction it may help to choose the right tunnel."
Dagon thought for a minute. Chandra had led them through a rock path that was cracked in the cliff but it was hard to tell exactly what direction they were coming from.
"Maybe North. I can't quite-"
"Dagon look," Adrastea cut him off, bending down and picking up a scrap of fabric that was caught on a rock.
"Someone else came this way," Dagon mused, looking up at the tunnel it had come from.
"Not just that. Don't you remember that fabric?"
"Um...no. Should I?"
"Its Marcy's. Chandra let her borrow a green dress when we first got to the cabin. It had tiny little flowers embroidered on the trimming. These are the same flowers," Adrastea told him, pointing at the pattern on the edge.
"Well then...I guess right it is."
They marched straight on into the tunnel and eventually had to just feel their way along as the light slowly faded to pitch black.
Adrastea was beginning to regret their decision and almost wanted to turn back (Even though she had never done such a thing in all her life).
The tunnel led on and on, the darkness pounding on them like it wanted the two to go back. No matter how hard he tried Dagon could not see a thing, not even his hand in front of his face. Everything was completely gone.
They did not even know how long they had been walking before two small lights started to glow. Suddenly the one up ahead disappeared and Adrastea spoke up, a lot farther from Dagon then he had thought.
"Dagon...Are you behind me?" she asked.
"I think so. Did you see that light up ahead?"
"No. But there's one right there it looks like...Hey is that yours?"
Dagon looked down and to his surprise one of the lights was in the shape of his medalion. Suddenly horror struck him and he clutched the necklace in his hand, shoving it inside his jerkin.
"Dagon?"
"I think we should turn back," he said hoarsely.
"But the others came this way. I don't think-"
"Stea? Is that you?" Deirdrie's voice came out of nowhere.
Several other lights appeared farther down the tunnel, each one a pale silver.
"Deirdrie? Are the others with you?" Adrastea asked, walking up ahead.
Dagon caught up with them and realized that everyone had a light around their neck. Could it really be...? But that is impossible!
"Is Dagon with you?"
"I'm over here Dio," Dagon spoke out, pulling the medallion back out of his jerkin so that they would know where he was.
"Oh thank goodness. I thought I would have to-"
"Right Dio that's enough now! Haha...Ahem...Well do any of you know where this tunnel leads?" Dagon quickly cut him off.
Adrastea turned in her tracks and wished more than ever that she could see Dagon's face. One of her most handy talents was the ability to tell if people were lying or not. But she could not tell if she could not see their face!
"No but the other tunnel leads to a dead end," Cephalus answered.
"Aren't we ignoring something quite obvious?" Marcy said out loud.
She was the only one that did not have a glowing medallion.
"Everyone here has a glowing necklace except me...I feel left out."
Suddenly everything hit Adrastea like a rock and her eyes widened.
"You mean...? CEPHALUS YOU SCROUNGING LIT-"
"Hoho, alright Stea let's calm down," Dagon quickly cut her off, putting one hand over her mouth blocking any words that might possibly come out before they had a chance to be sifted through.
Adrastea, now quite angry, turned around and opened her mouth to start yelling at Dagon as well...but did not. With the light from the necklace she could barely make out his expression and it told her that this was not the time nor the place to discuss the matter.
"I suggest we move on," Dagon said after a long pause.
Cephalus agreed eagerly but the others followed with an air of ignorance, none of them able to make heads or tails of the past few sentences...At least, none of them seemed to know. No one was really sure who was friend or foe anymore.
-Right!!! Sorry this is kind of a short chapter but I did not have much time to write it. I hope you liked and comments and votes do not go unnoticed. Thanks :D - Anna
