♠ Chikamsi ♠
Eniola moved away from Chikamsi's touch, wincing when she applied the ice pack to her cheek.
Chikamsi sighed and placed the ice pack beside her on the bench.
Reuben's hit had dislocated Eniola's jaw, Chikamsi was surprised when Eniola had started groaning after dropping the girls off in their classes.
She had requested for Chikamsi to escort her to the female locker room, it was then she noticed that Eniola's gums were bleeding.
Chikamsi tried to stay calm, she had given the girl some pain killers, which she couldn't swallow, and tried the procedure again.
“The blood of Jesus!" Jessica the health prefect exclaimed when she walked in on Eniola coughing and spitting out huge lumps of blood.
She was shouting at Chikamsi for just sitting down with Eniola instead of calling someone who she knew could help them, Chikamsi who was getting more apprehensive as the bleeding got worse asked her what she should have done.
“What the? What are you doing? Take away that stupid pack, and get her to the clinic." Jessica ordered, bending a little so she could put the darker girl's arm over her shoulder to support her, waiting for Chikamsi to do the same.
Chikamsi hurried over to Eniola's other side and hung her other arm accross her shoulder as well.
Halfway to the clinic, Eniola's weight increased, the darker girl slumped almost dragging them to the floor with her.
Her breathing came out in short wheezes, and Chikamsi panicked.
“What is all this? Eniola abeg stand up," Chikamsi cried, slapping her arm, her only response was her continuous struggle to take in air.
“What is happening?" She asked the health prefect, who seemed to be more focused on getting get Eniola to the clinic than on their present situation with the way she was trying to get Eniola onto her back.
“It's normal," she explained making Eniola sit up and supporting her back with with free hand.
“The blood from the injury in her mouth is blocking her airway, but who hit her? Why is she injured this badly?" She asked.
“It was Reuben, Eniola abeg," Chikamsi said, tears blurring her vision.
“I'll spend more time with you please, stop doing this thing na, stop wheezing biko," she added crying.
Jessica watched her take in measured breaths, coughing and exhaling more than she inhaled, “She needs to be rushed to the clinic, it's getting worse, Eniola could die." Jessica said, looking around, finally spotting someone, she waved the person over.
He accessed the situation, and Chikamsi was grateful that he had some common sense to know that the situation was serious, without any questions ,he lifted Eniola up and carried her to the school clinic.
—————————————————————————
The white wall had been supporting her for a while, Chikamsi leaned off it and stretched her body, her muscles were beginning to stiffen.
Tobiloba sighed beside her, “Eniola will be okay," he offered trying to console Chikamsi.
She rolled her eyes. “Abi it's you people that will go and be vaping and doing rubbish and come and be destroying other people's jawline when you're high," she hissed and turned away from him.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and violently shrugged it off.
“Chikamsi vaping? When did you see me vaping?" She heard him ask.
She wondered why she had brought it up, she hadn't believed it when Eniola said so, she didn't believe it now either but she needed someone to put the blame on right now.
“Chikamsi I don't vape." he said. Chikamsi heard him sigh and fought the urge to tell him she agreed with him.
She turned to face him again, it was way past seven in the evening, and her mother was on her way to take both Eniola and herself home, she wondered when Tobiloba was going to get home.
“Where do you stay?" She asked, “My brother lives near the barracks, I stay with him there," he answered.
“Orion Estate is at least a forty five minutes ride from this school, barracks is farther than that, Go home abeg, you shouldn't be on the road that late, go home." Chikamsi said, dismissing him and taking her previous position leaning against the wall, waiting for Eniola.
“I know you probably haven't been anywhere since we brought Eniola here, take some water" he offered, pushing a bottle of water towards her.
Chikamsi's upper lips curled up in a sneer, and she hissed at his gesture, she was about to say something when her mother's voice called from the hallway.
“Omonigho," she shouted, “where is my daughter," the woman questioned nobody in particular, Chikamsi ran to where her mother stood and allowed herself to be enveloped in a bone crushing hug.
“Mummy I'm okay, it's Eniola that is not okay," she said leading her toward the room where she had been denied access until her mother came.
Tobiloba bowed slightly and greeted her mother, “Who is this?" She questioned, ignoring his greeting.
“He carried Eniola here, He's nobody important, just our class mate." Chikamsi explained, ushering her mother into the room where Eniola sat down.
The nurse had administered a few drugs to her to help with the pain, and was now wrapping a bandage around her jaw, tying it atop her head.
“She can't talk for a few days, it's not that bad but let her not be talking," The nurse said, helping Eniola off her bed and greeted Chikamsi's mother.
“What happened to you Eniola?" Mrs Omonigho asked, patting Eniola's hand.
Chikamsi rolled her eyes, behind her mother.
“Mummy the nurse just said she's not supposed to be talking, and she can't even-"
“Shut up! Is that what you could not answer? " She hissed, dragging Chikamsi by her left ear out of the clinic and into her car, while Eniola followed them behind.
“Mummy wait na, that boy lives very far from here, let's drop him off" she said in an attempt to get her attention off her smarting ear and to something else.
Her mother finally let go of Chikamsi's ear and focused her attention on Tobiloba, Mrs Benjamin made to call him, but Tobi smiled and started walking away.
Chikamsi's ear bore the brunt of his refusal,as her mother pulled on the same ear again.
“Next time don't ask me to carry anybody that doesn't want to be carried," she said pulling her ear harder in-between each word.
Chikamsi no longer found her mother's discipline funny, her ear was hurting and this woman thought it was a joke.
Chikamsi was boiling with anger when her ear was finally released and she was ordered to put on her seatbelt as they left the school premises.
Chikamsi turned to check on the injured girl, she saw Eniola crying silently. It was heartbreaking to watch, seeing her in so much pain, with the teardrops rolling down her face and disappearing into the material of the bandage, without making a sound.
She seemed so strong, the way she hadn't shown any signs of discomfort untill she made sure that those girls were in their classrooms, it made Chikamsi wonder just how much Eniola took in, and how often she cried in silence
Eniola gave her a small smile when she noticed Chikamsi watching her, her heart broke watching her best friends face transform from her broken state to a fake happy demeanor.
“Eniola where's your house?" Mrs Omonigho asked her, watching her through the rearview mirror.
“The next street after ours," Chikamsi answered in her stead.
“We'll drop her at the entrance because a lot of construction has been going on in their street lately." Chikamsi said, resting back in her seat.
“Nonsense," her mother said, “Well walk with her and make sure she gets home safely. You call yourself a friend and you want to leave her wounded on the street like this? Eniola I would advice you to change your friend group."
She grinded her teeth in anger when Eniola managed a nod and gave Chikamsi another fake smile.
“I'll be a better friend, don't worry,"she whispered to her friend. Her mother scoffed and continued driving.
The key was under the footmat at the side entrance to their house, Chikamsi wondered how safe it was as they walked inside.
Eniola offered them seats at an expensive looking dining table which Chikamsi could tell was original marble, it looked and felt unique, and she went upstairs to call her parents.
A man came downstairs with a woman by his side, that looked like an older version of Eniola, she had dark skin, an athletic build like her daughter and a mysterious aura around her.
Eniola stood beside her father, this was the first man Chikamsi saw her stay in the same room with and not get into an argument or a quarrel with him.
“Thank you so much for bringing our daughter home," Eniola's mother said, she sounded exactly like Eniola, only more mature. Chikamsi's mother nodded and told her they needed to leave.
The family stood together with Eniola between them, a hand from each parent resting on her shoulder as Chikamsi and her mother left.
