♠ Chikamsi ♠
Chemistry was a bore.
Their chemistry teacher had asked each of them to state what they had learnt from the last lesson.
Lumen had already said most of it, luckily for Chikamsi, so she did mental copy and paste, giving the woman a a fraction of what Lumen had said, not too much but enough to make her believe she understood the lesson.
Chikamsi sighed in relief when she was asked to sit down, and Mrs Stella went on to the next person.
She poked Chetachi, trying to get his attention for the hundredth time that day.
He hadn't spoken to her since yesterday, after she hurled hurtful comments at Tobiloba in the Rainforest Cafe.
He had walked out on the duo and Chetachi left her there shortly after that, claiming she had no filter and was mean.
He ignored her again, focusing instead on the projector infront of them that the teacher was teaching from.
The electronic wristband on her right hand beeped, reminding her that she had ten minutes left to leave the school and start making her way to the venue where the Influencer's Meet would be holding.
Chikamsi worked her lower lip, wondering how best to tell the current educationer that she needed to leave the classroom.
————————————————————————
“Chikamsi!" Mr Omonigho called.
"Chikamsi" Her best friend repeated, and poked his head into the kitchen.
She waved the pestle threateningly in the air, and asked him what he wanted.
"Where's our pounded yam na?" Chetachi asked frowning as he walked into the kitchen.
Chikamsi rolled her eyes and continued pounding, blocking out whatever he was saying.
A whole me,Chikamsi thought to herself.
Pounding yam!
“The biggest influencer of the week is busy pounding yam, while Trip Markets Conference is going on." She muttered to herself, dishing the fluffy white swallow into a plate.
Just before she wanted to leave school two hours to the closing period, her parents had called to inform her that they were having a very special guest tonight, and she was to come home early to help out with preparations for the visitor.
Chikamsi had cried and grumbled, Trip Market had invited her for this conference, but she knew better than to disobey her parents, especially when a visitor was involved.
Reluctantly, she had headed home, only to meet her senior cousin and childhood best friend, grinning from ear to ear, walking in with Chetachi by 7pm.
They had cooked soup, her mother had done most of the cooking, while Chikamsi hung around basically being her errand girl.
When the soup was done, she had instructed Chikamsi to boil and pound some yam while she entertained their visitor in the parlour.
Chetachi walked over to where she was pounding the yam, and scooped a little onto his finger tasting it.
“There are seeds here Chikamsi" he said making a face and feeling the rest of the swallow on his finger.
“I know," she replied dishing the yam onto another flat plate.
Chetachi raised his eyebrows in concern
“You know?" He repeated.
“Mhhm" she replied, covering the plate swallow with a piece of aluminum foil.
“Its your own I'm wrapping" she said motioning to the seedy yam she just had rolled up.
She walked out on his whines of
“Chikamsi nau," placed the food on the table and pulled out a chair beside her father.
After Chetachi prayed over the meal, they sat down to eat.
“So, The Lasgidi Vault" her cousin said, trying to make small talk, Chikamsi wasn't concerned with what they were saying, she was still brooding internally over the fact that pounded yam she had missed her Influencer's Meet for, and had spent two back breaking hours to prepare was what they had finished in a few minutes.
Chetachi tapped her.
“I said why are you on the Lasgidi Vault?" Her mother repeated standing up to give Chikamsi a piece of her mind and palm.
Chetachi looked from mother to daughter and was about to speak, when her cousin interrupted.
“Aunty it's okay. Chikamsi is actually doing well for herself, " she said placing a protective arm over Chikamsi.
“although," she continued, “The way she's doing it is actually what I'm against."
Chikamsi rolled her eyes, announced to everyone that she had a chemistry test the the next day,and took the plates to the kitchen.
After washing and drying them in the dishwasher, she headed to her room.
A message came in on her phone from Instagram,
It was Chetachi, he was asking her to come out to the mini parlour upstairs.
She rolled her eyes and ignored his text. He hadn't been talking to her all day, because he was sleeping over didn't mean that she wanted to talk to him.
They had all done it, they had all joined hands to destroy her conference with Trip Market and she was supposed to be happy with them?
“I don't think so."she muttered as she put on a night robe and settled down under her duvet, pulling the white covers over her head.
Chikamsi sighed heavily and got off the bed, she had been having trouble falling asleep.
She peered at the wall clock on her way to the kitchen to get some coffee to help her sleep, it was past three in the morning.
Chikamsi heard voices in the kitchen, and crept downstairs quietly,to find out the source of the noise.
She saw Chetachi and her senior cousin discussing and eaten the cake she had bought from Lumen's creamery on Saturday to support her classmate's business.
And they were drinking it with milk!
“Who drinks milk like that? Straight from the bottle in Nigeria,"she said, walking over to them, arms folded infront of her chest and giving them a one them over .
“Busted," her cousin giggled, stuffing the last of the cake slices in her mouth.
Chetachi walked up to her, holding Chikamsi's arm.
He ushered her towards the table, where he had been previously discussing with her cousin and asked her to join them.
Her cousin looked at her with eyes that seemed to be searching her soul.
They hadn't really spoken to each other since she arrived, and Chikamsi was a tad bit worried, they had been best if friends when they were younger.
“Kamsi" she called softly, reaching out to hold Chikamsi's hand, Chikamsi shifted, inched closer to her and smiled at the older girl, “Denise" she said.
She reminded her of Ifeoma, free spirited and kind.
They had grown apart after her final year in junior secondary, and seeing her now was a bit weird.
She didn't know how to behave, how Denise would feel about her status as an influencer now, ”Chikamsi how are you?" She asked.
She nodded and gave Denise a tight lipped smile, Chetachi noticed the awkwardness and decided to lighten the mood.
“Chikamsi aren't you going to welcome Denise properly?" He asked nudging the light skinned girl to forward.
Denise smiled, her pink gums beautifully contrasting with her dark skin.
Chikamsi cringed. This had been a very awkward reunion so far, and she didn't know what to do about it.
Denise spoke up, “Tell me about your influencing" she suggested, Chetachi chipped in
“how you grew your page, became big time famous and all that good stuff."
“Who inspired you?" Denise asked her, looking into the teacup she had been drinking from.
“Well, nobody in particular inspired me, I just felt I should be an inspiration to younger people out there.
The term influencer is often marginalized to mean fashionista or model, what of people who go out there and make a change, making positive influence in people's lives and just happen to be famous?" She asked.
“Nobody was showing the people that weren't models," she said.
“No offense to models, because I follow Shade Onam and Semeeha Malik, but I'm not a model and I also wanted to be popular"
“So what did you do?" Denise asked, getting interested in the story.
“Well I started by identifying my target audience, I'm a lifestyle influencer basically," she said proudly informing them.
“And you're also a fashion icon," Chetachi added.
Chikamsi blushed, trying hard, and failing to look modest.
“Well I am the hottest cake in the oven," she admitted swelling with pride.
“See this biscuit o," Denise laughed, “Banana bread," Chetachi added.
Chikamsi was relieved, the previous tension had been dispelled and it was like Denise never left.
It was Js3 all over again, except that this time she had fame and money, and she also had two best friends instead of one.
“Ezi Enyi did you see Eniola today?" Chikamsi asked her brows furrowed as she tried to recall whether she had seen Eniola as well.
Chetachi shook his head slowly and offered “I saw her yesterday sha, on Sunday when we were marking tracks for the tryouts, Tobiloba and I saw her with Reuben." He said.
Denise's expression asked the question that was on her mind, “Eniola is my better half" Chikamsi explained, ignoring the look Chetachi gave her.
She made a mental note to meet up with Eniola the next day, she had been missing in action too frequently.
“Speaking of new girls, has anybody found a life partner?" Denise asked, winking at Chetachi. “You're high on chocolate milk" he retorted, blushing.
Chikamsi and Denise's eyes widened in excitement, “So you have one," they both exclaimed.
“You better lower your voice, you'll wake your parents up, and I won't be there to bail you," he told Chikamsi, and stood up to throw out the empty cake packet.
She grinned maniacally, placing a hand under her chin she sighed.
“Just how much have I missed hmm Tachi love?"she asked, the fair boy's face reddened and the girls burst into laughter, laughing even louder than before.
Denise smiled “So while I was away, you guys didn't even miss me, you were here making memories" she said.
Both girls giggled, asking Chetachi who the special person was, Chikamsi watched as the tips of the fair boy's ears grew red.
She was surprised to say the least, she hadn't noticed him with any girl, and even if she did she didn't think Chetachi had any crush.
“Is it that girl I saw you with that was boarding a shuttle?" Denise asked.
Chikamsi's eyes went from Denise to Chetachi and back.
“Influencing has been really keeping me in the dark" she commented, surprised. Which girl had Chetachi been taking shuttles with?
“That plump dark girl na, Cheetah," Denise said, probing for an answer.
“Amara is not my girlfriend, she's.."
“Amara ke?" Both ladies asked in unison.
