Extras

Just a few ideas and extra things about this book that I wanted to share.

WARNING!! Spoilers may follow

A few of these characters were named after friends. Namely, Madeline and Emma both came from people I know IRL. Other characters' personalities are based off some of my real-life friends.

When Madeline visits Zelda in Hyrule Castle, she was originally meant to be captured by the guards, and then later saved by Zelda. However, I decided that it would save time to just have her sneak past them.

"The Eye of Silver" was a last-minute title that I came up with. It started out with "the Silver One," and later "the Silver Eye," but I changed it because it was too close to NeriBurns' title for her character: "Lively One." I still wasn't fond of it after I decided on "the Eye of Silver," but I guess it's one of those things you have to get used to. I wanted to give her a title so Ganondorf and his minions had something to call her like how Link is called "Hero of Time" by Ganondorf. "The Eye of Silver" was chosen for her knowledge of all of Link's reincarnations, her ancestry with the Man Who Sees Truth, and, most famously, the Silver Forests.

Emma was originally supposed to be my sister IRL. I was actually considering leaving the character out of the story. Madeline's first encounter with Emma was only meant to show that Madeline shares her spoils with friends. However, I thought that the chapter with Emma's introduction would be pointless if she was never mentioned again, similar to Princess Ruto's introduction. I finally settled on adding her when I came up with the idea of beating temples to free the Great Fairy, giving her a purpose to join Madeline and Link by rescuing them from the guards.

The chapters with Madeline, Link, and Emma meeting and running away from the Silver Forests was the only part of the story that was exactly like how it happened in the dream I had. Surprisingly, that scene was meant to be part of a sequel, as in my dream I told the Kokiri that Link had saved my life once. This book was supposed to be about Link saving me, and then me saving Link in the sequel. As seen in The Blood of Silver, these plot lines were unintentionally reversed.

Omaha was the first horse that I ever rode IRL. He is Epona's brother in the story.

The name of this story was thought of on the spot, similar to The Unicorn's Wish. After suffering from major writer's block with a previous Zelda fanfic, Pori, I decided to try a story where the main character was based off my own thoughts, feelings, dreams, and choices. For instance, Madeline and I both play an ocarina. My love of ocarinas and of Ocarina of Time was what inspired this story.

Madeline was meant to cut her hair in this story, as my hair used to be long, but is now short. I forgot to mention anything about her cutting her hair, so this idea has been reserved for the sequel.

It was planned for Emma to go through the Fire Temple with Madeline, and then realize that her place was with the Silver Forests, but I wanted Madeline to go through her four trials alone.

Madeline was not initially meant to possess any magical powers until she became a Silver Forest. Because this was changed, it caused a bit of confusion concerning the purpose of her becoming a Silver Forest. This lead to the creation of the Kokiri Silverblade and further plotlines for the sequel.

At first, I wanted no romance between Link and Madeline. However, it was just too impossible to avoid...

The songs Madeline plays on her ocarina are, as follows: The Elegy of Emptiness, The Song of Storms, Castle Town Theme, Prelude of Light, Song of Time, New Wave Bossa Nova, Bolero of Fire, Serenade of Water, Nocturne of Shadow, Saria's Song, Zelda's Lullaby, and Sonata of Awakening. These are the actual notes on the ocarina. However, some of these songs are quite different because my previous ocarina had a strange pitch.

I decided to add a glossary near the middle of writing the story. In attempt to move it to the beginning, I spent two hours shifting the chapters. This proved to be useless, as I kept messing up. Some of the comments that I had received prior to the shift are in odd places because of this reason.

The Kokiri Silverblade was always meant to be an important object in the story. I wanted Madeline to have a weapon that was hers and that she could rely on, similar to the Master Sword. For lack of time, the sword's backstory and connection to Madeline has been reserved for the sequel.

When the epilogue was first published, there was a short scene with Link speaking to Ino about how Madeline will return in a later era, but this was deleted because it seemed too cheesy and rushed (which it really was).

The prophecy, though thought of on the spot, was always meant to be a huge part in both stories. As I did with Daughter of Light, I wrote the prophecy to what sounded interesting, and then wrote the plot that evolved around it, instead of writing a prophecy that evolved around a planned plot. I prefer to do this because (especially in Daughter of Light's case) I usually don't have a plot planned out when I begin writing, and writing a plot that evolves around an important prophecy guides me through the story and gives me an idea of what to write next in order to reach the big climax, therefore preventing writer's block from attacking my brain. It also helps me mold the story into a new one whenever I am a bit skeptical about my initial premise of the story. Come to think of it, this is most likely the reason that The Lost Ocarina, The Blood of Silver, and Daughter of Light are updated so consistently compared to other stories I have in mind.

I was always worried that the premise of this story seemed a bit rushed. However, after experiencing the second Alice in Wonderland, I realized that it is so much worse to rush the plot and climax than it is to rush a premise; it leaves more time for the meat of the story.

In the first chapter, Madeline's eyes are described in great detail. This was 100% intended, as I've always found the eyes the most intriguing aspect of any living being. Surprisingly, it has been the section that I have gotten the most comments about, and I actually use it quite a lot when someone asks me to read an excerpt from one of my stories. I actually get a lot of compliments about it with my friends, and people really do debate about what color they are. Technically, they are hazel, but they change quite a bit, and hazel is boring to say. ;)

The ending of this story was not the original ending - I had started a sequel to this story but had given up due to a lack of time to finish it. The sequel was called The Blood of Silver. The Lost Ocarina ended with Madeline in the void and floating off towards her memories before an orange flash followed by cackling laughter stopped her. This was supposed to be Ghirahim - I ha made him out to be the creator of the rune, so he had the power reactivate it, therefore bringing her back to life. He then brought her to his own time. She met up with the Link from Skyward Sword shortly after Demise had been destroyed. Ghirahim then stabbed her in front of him and then took her to the Twilight Princess time after Ganondorf had been defeated and kept her locked in a cage inside the Twilight Realm. Link (from Skyward Sword) followed her thanks to Zelda's powers, and met up with the Link from Twilight Princess, who joins him. He becomes a wolf, and then they see Madeline again (she uses her powers to help them get in the cage  she can't use it to get out because the rune keeps her in the cage), and Ghirahim stabs her again before leaving. She is healed by the Twilight when she becomes a wolf. Ino is back - and once Madeline turns back into a human they have to fight her so she doesn't kill them under the rune's influence. At this point, I was debating where to take the story next. Her ocarina had broke, so they went on a quest to fix it because they needed it so she could channel her magic through it (which she'd become aware of when Ganondorf killed her - she also got the knowledge of everything that Link and his incarnations had done). Then, they were to meet up with Ghirahim who kills Madeline again, and now she is stuck in wolf form. They then go back to the Skyward Sword time to kill Demise again. Madeline dies killing Demise. Her spirit is then seen meeting up with the Hero's Shade, who transforms into the spirit of the Hero of Time. Madeline and Link (Ocarina of Time) join hands and walk into the sun, and their spirits turn into wolves that run off before disappearing.

Madeline was resurrected at the end by the Sages - she had not died, the rune did. Imagine it a bit like Harry Potter - it was tied to Ganon's life force, so when he killed it, his presence ceased to exist. Not entirely: his spirit was captured by the Sages, and then the events of Twilight Princess occur. The "better place" that she was being carried off to was a time after the war when she and Link could be happy together without having to worry about war anymore. It was her own happily ever after.
