Grief
Grady's perspective:
Grady sat on the bed wringing his hands so violently that he might dislocate his fingers. He took a deep breath. How could this have happened? How could he have let this happen? She was his daughter. He was supposed to protect her.
He didn't notice he was crying until a tear landed on the back of his hand. He squeezed his eyes shut to hold back the rest. He could still feel some pain in the spot where the ice had collided with his abdomen. Elwin had given him an elixir for the pain, but he hadn't taken it. Right now he wanted to feel the pain. He wanted to feel something besides guilt and sorrow.
He ran his fingers through his hair. Resting his elbows on his knees, he put his face in his hands.
Someone sat on the bed next to him, rubbing small circles across his back.
He looked up to find Edaline smiling sadly at him.
He tried to return the favor, but failed. He leaned his head against her shoulder.
She wrapped her arms around him, squeezing him tight. She laid her head on his.
He let the tears stream down his face, his shoulders shaking as he suppressed his sobs.
Sophie appeared in the doorway. Seeing her parents embracing on the bed, she walked over, sat on Grady's other side, and joined the hug. She leaned her head against his shoulder, shedding her own tears.
Grady moved his head onto hers, inhaling the smell of his daughter's hair, trying to distract himself.
Sophie nestled in closer.
Edaline stretched her arm to include Sophie in the embrace.
Somehow they slid off the bed and were sitting on the floor in a circle. They pressed their foreheads together, eyes closed, all crying.
The bodyguards stood solemnly outside the door as the family wept on the floor.
