"Breathe. Relax. Feel the balance," Rey could hear Luke's voice, soft and smooth.
She was sitting in the stone clearing again trying to raise a rock into the air-it was heavier and she was having a hard time doing it. But Luke constantly reminded her that the stick was hard to lift as well, until she tried her hardest and really connected with the Force.
Rey focused on the balance in the Force, reaching the balance inside of her and trying to let the balance flow through her. She could once again feel it gently dance through her veins, and slowly pour out her fingertips.
Soon she could hear her uncles' voice ring praise. "Wonderful, Rey! It's in the air now, keep focusing!" Rey thought she could hear a hint of pride in his steady tone.
Calm, chaos, simple, complex, small, large... Rey concentrated on finding every single difference in the things around her, and using the in between to lift her rock. Did she really have to do this every single time she wanted to lift something? This seemed like a long process. Not anything like when her uncle was lazy and lying on his bed then suddenly wished for his water cup. In that situation, he closed his eyes for two seconds and the cup zoomed to his hand.
Just when Rey was steadily lifting the rock, she sensed something else. The spinning rock floating a foot from her fingers shuddered. Luke saw it, and his eyes darkened with concern.
Something began to fog her vision. A black, dark cloud was appearing, and it seemed to grow. It swirled and began to capture her thoughts.
"Master," she whispered. She felt herself be taken off to a far off place, the dark cloud still looming. "Master!" She repeated with panic. Rey wanted to leave, wanted to stay away, to open her eyes. But she couldn't. She stayed transfixed on the dark cloud.
Somewhere far off, she could hear someone's voice calling her name, but it seemed miles away. All sound went out and all she could hear was...
Breathing. Deep, mechanical breathing. Not unlike the scary breathing from her nightmares. It definitely wasn't her own.
Again, a voice far away calling her name. For some reason she couldn't tear herself away. "Together Rey..." the voice said quietly, and a black gloved hand reached out from the darkness.
Then her eyes snapped open. She was still sitting on the ground, yet everything around her had changed. Luke was staring at her frantically, the rock she had once lifted was shattered on the ground. Large cracks broke the stone floor, in jutted patterns.
"Rey!" Luke's voice was not full of relief, like Rey anticipated. It was filled with despair and anger. "What have you done? Could you hear me call your name?"
"I-I..." Rey stammered. "Enough! Do you realize what could've happened? The dark side was calling to you Rey, and you denied resisting it. You must control your emotions, resist the dark side. Like your brother. It wouldn't hurt to learn a few things from him," Luke said sternly.
"I..." Rey didn't know what to say.
Luke's tone softened. "This is serious, Rey. Not a joke. That's enough for today." He finished, arising and beginning to walk away. Rey sat on the cracked ground, feeling disappointed and angry with herself. Luke stopped and turned.
"Don't let it happen again," with that he walked away, leaving Rey with another opposite in her mind, like the ones she had sensed before.
Pride...
And disappointment.
