"The campus has been bustling with activity since midnight. You can see students thronging the place where Ravi was found unconscious. The security has been stepped up to avoid any unforeseen circumstances. He has been a brilliant student and avidly participated in all the cultural events in the college, his friends and teachers recall. It is a very sad and unexpected day not only for his near and dear but also for all of us. In the current circumstances we have to wait and see, the repercussions this incident would bring. We can only hope he recovers soon. With camera man Rajiv, Radhika Roy, ANTV". Radhika sighed turning the microphone down. She has been one of very reclaimed journalists of the country and someone who was passionate about her job. No matter how many stories she covered on a daily basis, incidents like these always left a mark on her. " Radhika, let's grab a bite. Who knows, we might not find time after this" Rajiv said. " Yeah. Let's go." She said and started walking towards the canteen. She had a hunch, the coming week was going to be very busy and this story is going to grab a lot of attention. "I think we should talk to his mother", she said taking a seat at a table in the canteen."Huh?what?" Rajiv said, looking intently at something that caught his attention."His mother. I think we should talk to her" she repeated."Yeah. May be. We should. Apparently she is not allowed to visit him in the ICU." he said taking a bite of the biscuit they had ordered."What? Why?Isn't this a little overboard. How can they not allow to see her son?" she asked, anger rising in her tone.He shrugged. "I am sure students will not let this go so easily." she said taking a sip from the coffee. They remained silent for a while in their own thoughts."Ok! Rajiv. Let's go to his mother." she said suddenly."Now? Radhika, tomorrow?" he pleaded. "No. Before any other channel reaches her, we need to go.Get up!" she ordered. He dragged himself from the chair and followed the excited journalist.

"My name is Ravi Kumar and I dream of giving a better life to my Mother and Brother. A life where neither of us have to worry or dread any kind of humiliation. A life where we will be as free as anyone else in this country. Free to voice opinion. Free to choose. Free to live with dignity. I have no complaints, neither do I have any appreciation for my life so far. It had fueled me to be what I am today. I come from a place, where education was a rare privilege. A privilege that I do not deserve or so they say. I was made to sit on a door mat while the remaining class had a better view of the black board. My thirst had to wait for I was filthy to touch the pot in the corner of my class room. I was never given a chance to ask why I was graded less in comparison to everyone else. Of-course, I never had anyone to compare with, anyways. Now, who do I blame for the lack of my grades?
My mother, my world. She had survived the daunting eyes that made her cringe while she walked to school to get us back home, every snide remark thrown at her face by the people who 'adopted' her, the evil uncles who tried taking advantage of the fact that she was a helpless single woman trying to raise her children. The days, she would be beaten up for a reason so silly to even mention here. The days when her only solace was us, her sons. She survived it all and for us. My mother and I have made a pact to keep my brother oblivious to the hardships we go through. He does not deserve to be treated this way, infact no one deserves it. I will fight till my last breath to give him everything I have been denied. I am eighteen years old now. My Mother tells me I am too matured for my age, maybe I am. I do not have the luxury to fantasize or entertain any boyish desires. I have to study hard and work harder. I have to get us out of the rotten hell that we live in. I should educate my brother in a way that he will one day conquer the world. Science is my passion. A world that answers all my questions. The complexities of Physics and the wonders of nature, I want to study all.I travel around 30km in a hope to realize my dream. I hope I will one day be recognized as a great Scientist.
I want to conclude by adding 'Every person deserves an equal chance to live the life he dreams of, if not anything else, at least a life of dignity.' The teacher finished reading the essay, with a heavy heart. She taught English in the only government college in a town close to Ravi's village. She knew Ravi as a bright and active student always ready to answer questions. She was shocked to read what he went through. She could not believe such things really existed in the modern day. It troubled her to ignore what was written, she wanted to help him. She called for him to her cabin.
"May I come in" Ravi asked." Yeah Ravi. Please Come in" she said studying the boy who stood at the door. He looked like all other boys his age, but deep down he was much wiser than any of them. His black eyes showed no pain or disappointment for the society that treated him this way. His face had a smile that anyone would call genuine. "You asked to see me?" he asked very politely. "Sit Down. I wanted to talk to you. I read your essay", she paused for his reaction. He did not sit, something flickered in his eyes, fear? she thought to herself. He nodded composing himself. "Which class is your brother in?", she asked warmly." No Ma'm.He doesn't go to school" he said not elaborating." Why?How old is he?" she asked, surprised." He is 13 now. I don't want him to be humiliated like I was so we decided he will stay at home. I tutor him everyday. He is very smart" he said proud of himself and his brother. She smiled at the young boy sitting in front of her." Do you like this town and people?" she asked." Yes Ma'm. They don't criticize or mock at me like they do in that village. I think people here are a little more educated than there, that is probably the difference" he said analyzing. She was impressed with the maturity with which he spoke and the calmness in his tone. " Would you like to move here? You, your mother and brother?" she asked hoping he would accept her offer. He was surprised and he made no attempt to hide it in his expressions." But how?" he asked. " I have a portion in my house that you can stay in. You can join your brother in school too." she said smiling." How will we pay the rent? We don't earn much" he said sincerely." Don't worry about that. I will take care." she said." No Ma'm . Thank you for your kindness but I can't accept it." he said curtly. She was proud of this boy and his self respect." Let's do one thing. You tutor my son. He is in class 8. I will look for something decent for your mother too. Then you can pay my rent." ,she said. He thought of it for a while and said, " Can I talk to my mother and tell you?" he was very happy and it was apparent." Yes sure" she smiled. He started walking out " Ravi" she said and he turned back to face her." I am very proud of you" and he smiled.
Suguna was reluctant to move out. It din't feel right for her to leave this place, especially with Vishwa on the bed. "Amma, if you think we should stay here, its ok. We will. But imagine how happy we could be if we leave this place" Ravi tried reasoning with his mother. " Kiran can go to school, I don't have to travel far. We both can earn and stay safe." He pointed out all but the obvious fact. "Oh! Come on Suguna. Leave this place. It will do you no good. You have to,atleast for your sons." Avva said trying to make her understand. She along with few other people had assembled in the hut to convince her to move out.Suguna sighed " I don't know. What if Ammaji is furious about me leaving? Am the only one who is taking care of cooking and looking after nanna. She will curse if I am not around" she shuddered imagining how Ammaji would react."Why do you care?Let her think what she wants to.Even better, don't tell her that you are leaving.Just pack your bags and slip out." suggested one of them. She was cornered and was forced to accept.
