        Samantha Francesca Hughes is the only girl amongst her friend group of boys. In their middle school, they were known as the nerds, the geeks, the weirdos—whatever insult you can name, they've probably been called it. With all things considered, they were pretty good at staying above it all. Sam enjoyed minding her business in the small, quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana. Despite everything and everyone saying she shouldn't, Sam liked science. She liked Dungeons and Dragons. She liked video games. She liked hanging out with Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin. It does, however, suck that her parents are dead (and her cousin hated her, and she had to live with her aunt and uncle), but Sam tries to hide that sad little fact. Her life is as entirely ordinary as it could be.

        Until November 6, 1983, this is.
