The Girl Who Waited

Metal clambered with metal, causing a sharp bang every time the two met again. The handle was gripped tightly in my hand as I swung the hammer roughly at the nails that stuck out of their places by just a fraction of a centimeter. I had to make sure that the weapon was perfect before I allowed myself to stop.

My fingers that wrapped tightly around the hammer felt like if they let go of the handle then they'd hurt because they were around it so long. I considered using duct tape to tape the hammer into my fist, but I had already used it all up.

After a couple more whacks with the hammer, I finally took a step back to observe my work. My shoulders ached as they were rolled back, it was a wonder of why they hadn't gotten used to the hard work after six months of nonstop work. As I continued to observe the work, my fingers instinctively took the hair tie that held my wild auburn hair out, combed through the curly sweaty mess, then tied it into a higher and tighter ponytail.

My entire body ached from the labor, especially my left hand's thumb that had been holding a nail in place when an unlucky hit came through to cause it to, well, you get the picture. It was then wrapped around in layers of duct tape, I wasn't sure if I could ever remove the duct tape and I also wasn't sure if I'd ever want to.

My eyes examined the robot closely, trying to not be biased when it came to knowing if it looked life-like or not. At times like this, I wished that I had more skill in robotics and craftsmanship so I wouldn't need to "borrow" manual books from the Lend-A-Book shop that had walls of books, two exits, and one very sleepy old man.

The machine stood four feet tall, I would've made it taller if I had metal and patience to spare. It stared forward with a face with as much detail as slender man's. I didn't mind the lack of detail because I planned to cover it up with a Halloween mask when it would finally be used. Its body only contained nine joints, meaning that it could only twist its head and move its shoulders, hips, elbows and knees. Not a single inch of the body could pass for a human, but that is nothing that a clown costume can't hide.

I smiled at the robot and said to myself, "Now that I'm done with the body, it's time to figure out how to make it move by itself." I dragged myself over to the small wooden stool and plopped onto the seat. The chair immediately gave in and crashes to the ground. I was more surprised than hurt by the event, and stayed on the ground to read the How-To-Build-A-Toy-Car manuel. I'm not sure what a robot has to do with a Hot Wheels guide, but I had hoped to maybe figure out how I could use a rusting car battery to bring life to the bland aluminum body.

I sighed as the distracting question came back to me, Why don't you just give up? There were many reasons why I had to complete the project, all of them by the fault of the gods.

Yes, that is right. I mentioned "gods" and you want to know why? There is more than one god. There are dozens, no hundreds, actually I think thousands, it could actually possible be ten thousand by now, anyway there are a lot more gods than just one. Every single one of them is Greek, or Roman...maybe it is possible that there are more than just Greek and Roman gods but let's just ignore that mystery for now.

You might just want to either hug your Bible closer or maybe you want to throw it away and start bowing down to Zeus, but don't you dare stop believing in whatever you worship. Not a single god is worthy of your worship except for the one or ones that you already believe in. The gods had taken everything away from me with the help of their children. We almost had it all, rolling in the deep, I thought to myself.
