Forest of the Dead

“He needs to be killed,” I urged.  “Percy must be killed or we have no chance of winning.”

“You don’t understand, Loner.  The prophecy says that a child of one of the big three will become the savior or destroyer of Olympus,” Luke explained for the fifth time.  “If we kill him, then that just means that someone else will become the destroyer of the savior.”

“Good, then we might actually have a shot at convincing that person to join our side,” I argued.  “Because Percy will never, in a million years, ever join our side.”

“How do you know that?” Luke asked to prove a point.  “How would you know?”

“I just know.  If you don’t listen to me, then he is going to save Olympus and destroy our side.  So he needs to be killed,” I continued.

“But if he is killed then we-“

“Guys!” one of the girls at the table piped up, silencing us all.  It was Selena, possibly the most beautiful girl in the camp.  Her hair was perfect like a cartoon character’s hair and her voice was something that I would never get tired of.  People say that it is because she has a gift of charmspeak, but I just think that it is something that even a blessing can’t give someone.  Her chocolate brown eyes darted between Luke and I as she calmed down.  “Really, you two have been going in a circle on the same argument, like a dog chasing its tail,” she told us.  “Now, for gods’ sake can you two get along and understand each other?”

“I’m sorry,” Luke apologized.

“It’s okay,” I accepted.

“I was talking to Selena,” he responded.  I glared at him, deciding to just let it slide this one time.

“Okay, let me explain something.  I have seen things that only the fates could know about, and I know that if Percy lives then he will save Olympus,” I explained again, this time I spoke slowly.

“But if we kill him then someone else would take his place.  Then we would have to convince them to join our side,” Luke went on.  “Percy is a clueless kid; he can’t be that hard to convert.”

“Not yet, but he will be.  He will stop at no end to defend the gods,” I told him.  “That’s why we need to kill him.”

“Okay people, you guys are still having the exact conversation but this time you two are just smiling and talking slower,” Selena interrupted, clearly annoyed.  “Make a compromise.”

“I guess that when you saw the future, you didn’t see yourself with Percy,” Luke predicted.  I nodded.  “What if you were to become his friends, since you clearly know more about him than anyone else.”

I stood up, the wooden chair sliding back into the wall.  “You know what?” I asked.  “That’s exactly what I am going to do.  Then I can prove to you that we have got to kill him.”

Luke lifted his arms in surrender.  “I said nothing about killing anyone, that’s your idea.  I personally think that it would be better to have him on our side but if that isn’t the case then I guess that you could kill him,” he told me.  “But at least try to convince him first.”

I rolled my eyes and slammed the door of the meeting place as I walked out.  This guy, I sarcastically said in my head.  Gods, that guy is stupid.
