CHAPTER 6

Violet was sleeping by that time. Ella and Emma glanced at each other astonished and then looked back at the door. No one was there.

"I think it happened because of the wind," Emma suggested.

"I don't know! The window is closed" Ella argued.

"Shall we wake mom this time?" Emma proposed.

"If something happens then we will wake her immediately," said Ella.

They waited for a few minutes but nothing happened.

"So I guess no one is the....." Emma was cut when suddenly the bookshelf in the room fell down.

Violet got up, startled.

"What the hell..! How did it fall down?" Violet asked.

"Mom we don't know! First, the door opened on its own and then this bookshelf fell down on its own! We told you, mom! There are ghosts here!" Emma wailed.

"My babies, there is nothing as such ghosts! I know that you both can't sleep so I'll be awake until you both fell asleep. Ok? And besides, it's five in the morning. Now sleep" Violet said.

"Ok, mom!" Said Ella and Emma.

Ella and Emma lay down on the bed and Violet patted them. They both fell asleep soon as they were really tired.

They both got up late in the morning. When they got up, Violet was not beside them. They both got ready quickly and went down. Violet was unpacking the boxes.

"Emma! Ella! Come and have breakfast and then you both will have to help me clean the attic" violet said.

"Th...the att...ttic" Ella and Emma stammered.

"Yes! You have to help me! And there is nothing up in the attic" Violet said.

They both ate their breakfast in silence, recalling everything that happened last night.

After finishing their breakfast, Violet dragged them upstairs. The attic looked less scary than it did last night.

Emma and Ella went near the window from which the ghost had appeared and looked carefully at it and to their horror, some blood handprints appeared on them.

"Ahhhh" they both screamed. Violet rushed over.

"What happened now?" Violet said, irritated.

"Mom, look there are bloody handprints on the window!" Emma exclaimed.

This time the handprints didn't disappear.

"I guess it's not blood! It's just red paint which the people who lived here before us must have made" Violet reasoned.

"What! Mom! Can you please believe us for once? We are not lying! They appeared just now!" Ella yelled.

Violet was alarmed. Ella never shouted like this. She was a really calm girl.

"I think you both are tired. You better go down and take rest" Violet said.

"No mom! I won't go down alone. Who knows what might come now?" Ella denied.

"Alright! So you both explore the attic then. You might get something good" Violet said and she went back cleaning.

Ella and Emma went to the nearest metal box. It was really big.

"I wonder what is inside it? There must be something valuable inside since it is locked" Emma said.

"Then we must look for the key!" Ella said.

They both began searching for the key. They searched everywhere but they weren't able to find a key that fit the lock.
