Magic

Let's just say that I'm different, though that's saying things loosely.

I'm Cassidy Willis, but my friends, if I had any, call me Cas. Everyone at my school hates me for no reason.

My life just came to a smash stop. My favorite grandma, Grandma Bertha, died while I was at school one day.

My dad and I are going to Grandma Bertha's house to clean it out.

"Cassidy, can you come here?" Dad called.

"Coming." I walked into the bedroom and saw that Dad was holding a box of stuff marked Cassidy.

"I think she wanted you to have this." Dad said, handing me the box.

"Is it okay if I look through it?"

"Yeah, of course." I walked out of the room and went into the living room to open the box.

The first thing I saw was a picture of Grandma Bertha with Grandpa Florian, who died a ten years earlier, in high school. In the picture, Grandma Bertha had dark purple hair and was wearing a light purple dress. Not what I was used to from her usual blonde hair. Grandpa Florian was wearing a crown on his head and wore a blue and yellow suit. They looked like complete opposites. Then I heard a knock at the door.

I opened it and saw Jason, easily one of the hottest guys in the grade with black hair and green eyes, contrary to my blonde hair and blueish gray eyes.

"Hey Cassidy." He said. "I saw that you were acting weird yesterday at school, so when I saw you come in, I came over to ask if you were okay."

"I'm fine." I responded. "I just got a call yesterday from my dad that my grandma, Grandma Bertha, died. I was pretty depressed yesterday, so, yeah."

"Mind if I come in? I can help you clean out the house if you want." Jason said.

"Sure." I said, opening the door for him to come in.

Uncle Bryce walked in behind him.

"Hey Princess. How are you doing?" He asked.

"Fine. One of my classmates came over to help us clean out the house."

"Oh, that's cool. Why don't you guys search through that box first, then help me and your father upstairs." Uncle Boyce said, walking upstairs.

"What's in that box?" Jason said.

"Stuff Grandma Bertha left me. Want to help look?"

"Sure." We walked over to the couch and the box of stuff.

Jason picked up the picture of Grandma Bertha and Grandpa Florian. "The girl, she looks just like you."

"That's Grandma Bertha. She's dancing with Grandpa Florain."

"Why did she dye her hair purple?"

"She was going through a fase. That was prom night. Grandpa Florain just got crowned Prom King. Grandma Bertha got crowned Prom Queen, but someone stole the crown, so she didn't get to wear it."

Jason picked up another picture. This one had Grandma Bertha holding my mother in her hands after she was born. Grandpa Florain was sleeping in a chair in the corner.

"That your mom?"

"Yeah. I always loved this picture."

I rumbled through the box and felt two things. I picked them both up and brought them to the surface. It was a necklace that was gray with two roses and and a bird on it. There was a note attached to it that said For your 16th birthday, the day that everything changes. Grandma Bertha. The other thing was a leather covered book with jewels. It had what looked like a dragon curled to make a circle emblem on it. In the front cover, it said In this book lies the writings of Evie, Jay, and Carlos. Treat this with respect. Grandma Bertha.

"Who's Evie, Jay, and Carlos?" Jason asked.

"No clue." I said, putting on the necklace, which I realized was a locket. I opened it up and saw a slip of paper fall out. I picked it up.

"Love so high, heartbreak so tragic, teleport us to the land of magic? What's that supposed to mean?" I asked. All of a sudden, winds picked up and green mist wove around Jason and I.

"Cassidy, what's going on?" Jason asked.

"No clue!" And just like that, we were gone.
