13. Mario's Italian Food
"This better be worth it," Daisy grumbled as she, Luigi, and Peach took seats in the dining room of Mario and Luigi's house. Mario came in after them and handed them a "menu", which was just a piece of paper.
"Pick some stuff from the menu that you want me to cook for you," he grinned. Luigi, Peach, and Daisy looked at each other.
"Should we order everything?" Peach whispered to them.
"Yeah, probably," Luigi whispered back. He turned to Mario. "We'll have everything," Luigi said. Mario looked delighted.
"Alright, I'll get started!" he left the dining room.
"We should divide the food to taste-test," Peach suggested.
"I'll do the appetizers," Daisy said. "Luigi, you'll do the first course and Peach, you'll do the second course. All of us will do the desserts." Peach and Luigi agreed. Half an hour later, the appetizers came. A platter of garlic bread and a platter of Caprese tomato towers were placed on the table.
"I tried many new techniques of Italian cooking and they end up way yummier than when I cook using the original Mario family style," Mario bragged.
"But, Mario!" Luigi frowned. "That's our family tradition. Why are you abandoning it?"
"I'm not abandoning it, I'm just trying new things," Mario replied.
"The garlic bread looks weird," Peach observed. "Is it just me or did you not chop the garlic first?"
"I told you, it's one of my new techniques," Mario stated. "You're supposed to separate the garlic and bread yourself and then put both in your mouth at once." Daisy looked horrified.
"You mean, take the garlic and bread in each hand and eat both at the same time?" she questioned.
Yep! I'll demonstrate," Mario took the garlic in one hand, and the bread in another. He took a bite.
"Whew," he spewed garlic breath in Daisy's face. She immediately pinched her nose.
"Alright... Here I go," Daisy did what Mario did. She instantly spit it out onto Mario's face. "That was terrible!" Daisy exclaimed. Mario happily ate the strange substance that landed on his face.
"Well, maybe you'll enjoy the Caprese tomato towers," Mario gestured towards the salad.
"I think the cheese is rotting and the tomatoes are spoiled," Peach said.
"Where did you get them?" Daisy asked.
"In the family wine cellar. They were aging, along with the wine," Mario answered. Daisy was just staring at it. "Well go on, try it!" Mario said.
"Ugh, fine," Daisy out a forkful in her mouth. It tasted as bad as the garlic bread. She forcefully swallowed it.
"So, how was it?" Mario said. Daisy simply shook her head and began to gulp down her water, which luckily tasted normal.
"You can have the rest," she pushed her plate away.
"Are you ready for the first course? I think it'll be ready soon," Mario picked up the platters.
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Luigi smiled weakly. Suddenly, there was a beeping noise coming from the kitchen?
"Mamma mia, I must've overcooked it! I'll be right back," Mario ran to the kitchen. A minute later, he returned to the dining room with a platter of burnt honey-cured ham and a platter of lasagna that looked cold and soggy.
"They don't look appetizing," Luigi stated.
"They still taste the same," Mario assured.
"Fine, I shall try these new techniques of yours," Luigi first took a bite of the ham. It was very stiff and there was a big lack of honey. "This doesn't have as much honey as it should!" Luigi said.
"Really? I remember putting A LOT of honey," Mario glanced at the ham. "Take another bite."
"Ok, if you say so," Luigi took another bite of the ham. This one had so much honey that some of it stuck to the roof of his mouth and it was difficult to remove using his tongue. "Well, now I know where all the honey you put went," Luigi muttered.
"Try the lasagna," Mario said. Luigi put a forkful of lasagna into his mouth.
"You didn't heat this long enough," he stated. "It's all soggy." Mario then glanced at a nearby clock.
"I have a feeling that the second course is ready," he informed the others. "Want me to bring it out?"
"Sure, I guess?" Peach replied nervously.
"And Mario, you can have the rest of the first course," Luigi told his brother. Mario brought the unfinished first course back to the kitchen and brought out the second course.
"Good luck, Peach," Daisy whispered. "You'll need it."
"I know," Peach whispered back. She noticed the pizza and spaghetti on the table. "Which one should I try first?" Peach asked herself. She decided to try the spaghetti first. The meatballs didn't have enough herbs, so they ended up tasting like spoiled burger meat. The spaghetti tasted bitter.
"How is it?" Mario asked.
"Tolerable I suppose, but it can certainly be better," Peach answered.
"Try the pizza now!" Mario said. Peach took a slice and put it in her mouth. It was very crunch and burnt. It was because of this that Peach accidentally swallowed it too early and began choking.
"Oh no!" Luigi exclaimed. Daisy shot Mario a glare as she and Luigi helped Peach spit out the pizza slice.
"That's it!" Daisy said when Peach was fine again. "I'm not staying here any longer. I won't wait to find out what will happen when we're given dessert." She, Luigi, and Peach left.
"I'll come back when all of the food has been kept and this place has been cleaned up," Luigi stated as he went out the door.
"Yay! More food for me!" Mario exclaimed. "Besides, I find these things very delicious."
Looks like Mario should just stick to his family tradition next time! Hope you enjoyed reading this chapter! Do you like Italian food? I definitely do! Anyways pls add, comment, vote, etc. Thanks!
