Chapter 5 (Into the Dalek)
A/N - Hey, it's been a while hasn't it? I'm gonna try to get back into writing this series, so you won't have to wait months between updates.
Elise came into the control room to see a woman dressed in a spacesuit and the Doctor holding a drink carrier with coffees.
The woman was holding a gun and it was pointed at the Doctor.
"You'll probably feel a bit sick. Please, don't be," the Doctor told her.
"Where's my brother?"
"Hello, I'm the Doctor."
"He was right beside me. Where's Kai? How did I get here?"
"I materialized a time capsule exactly round you and saved your life one second before your ship exploded, but do please keep crying."
"My brother's just died."
"His sister didn't. You're very welcome. Put the gun down."
"Or what?"
"Or you might shoot me. Then where will you be?"
"In charge of your vessel."
"Over my dead body," Elise snapped, "Try it and see what happens."
"You'd starve to death trying to find the light switch. Who are you?" the Doctor asked the woman.
"I'm Lieutenant Journey Blue of the Combined Galactic Resistance. I demand you take me back to my command ship, the Aristotle, which is currently located..."
"No. Hey, not like that."
"You will take me back to my command ship, which is currently positioned..."
"No, no. Come on. Not like that. Not like that. Get it right."
Journey lowered her gun. "Will you take me back to my ship? Please?"
"The Aristotle's the big fella parked in the asteroid belt, yeah?" The Doctor set the TARDIS in flight.
"It's shielded."
"More or less."
Journey opened the door and found they were on the Aristotle.
"Dry your eyes, Journey Blue. Crying's for civilians. It's how we communicate with you lot," the Doctor told her. He and Elise walked past her.
"Please? Since when have you cared about manners?" Elise asked her father. He looked at her.
"Manners are very important, Elise. Maybe you should pay attention."
Elise felt a sting in her hearts. Clearly this Doctor didn't know how to take a joke.
Journey finally stepped out of the TARDIS and looked at it. "It's smaller on the outside."
"It's a bit more exciting when you go the other way. This isn't a battleship. Medical insignia. It's a hospital," the Doctor observed.
An older man flanked by soldiers walked up to them. "We don't need hospitals now. The Daleks don't leave any wounded, and we don't take any prisoners."
Wait. Did he just say Daleks?
"I saved your little friend here, if that's in any way relevant to mention," the Doctor told him.
"That's true, sir. He did," Journey confirmed.
"Thank you," the older man said.
"You're welcome. I wish I could've done more," the Doctor said.
"Then you should have."
"Okay."
"Oi!" Elise said, "He saved her life!"
"I suppose you're right," the older man said, "You did save Journey, and for that I am personally grateful."
"Well...?" the Doctor asked.
"However, the security of this base is absolute. So we're still going to kill you."
"Oh, it's a roller coaster with you, isn't it?"
"Shoot them, bag them and throw them outside."
"Go ahead and try!" Elise yelled.
"No! Stop!" Journey begged.
"I'm sorry. He might be a duplicate," the older man said.
"He's a doctor. And we have a patient, don't we, Uncle?"
They led Elise and the Doctor down a corridor.
"Why does a hospital need a doctor?" the Doctor asked.
"The Aristotle wasn't always hidden. The Daleks got here before us," Journey's uncle said.
"You don't like soldiers much, do you?" Journey asked.
"You don't need to be liked. You've got all the guns," the Doctor told them. He walked up to a machine. "Wow! A moleculon nanoscaler."
"You know what it does, then?" Journey asked.
Elise wanted to brag about how the Doctor knew everything, but kept her mouth shut. This Doctor didn't seem to like it when she commented on things.
"It miniaturizes living matter. What's the medical application, though? Do you use it to shrink the surgeons so they can climb inside the patients?" the Doctor asked.
"Exactly," Journey's uncle said.
They continued walking.
"Fantastic idea for a movie. Terrible idea for a proctologist. Are you going to miniaturize me?"
"You're a doctor, aren't you?"
A pair of doors opened.
"And this is your patient."
Elise jumped back, grabbing onto the Doctor's arm. It didn't matter how old she got, the Daleks would still terrify her.
The Dalek's eyestalk lit up.
"No, you don't understand. You can't put me in there!" the Doctor told them.
"Doctor?" the Dalek asked.
Elise and the Doctor looked at each other.
"Doctor," the Dalek said again.
"How do you know who I am?" the Doctor asked.
"He doesn't. We promised him medical assistance," Journey's uncle told them.
"Are you my doctor?" the Dalek asked.
"We found it floating in space," Journey said.
"We thought it was deactivated, so we tried to disassemble it," her uncle explained.
"You didn't realize there was a living creature inside," the Doctor said.
"Not till it started screaming," Journey said.
"Help me," the Dalek begged.
"Why would I do that? Why would any living creature help you?" the Doctor asked.
"Daleks will die."
"Die all you like. Not my problem."
"Daleks must be destroyed!"
Elise and the Doctor started to leave.
"Daleks must be de...What did you just say?"
"All Daleks must die. I will destroy the Daleks. Destroy the Daleks. Destroy the Daleks!"
What the bloody hell was going on?
Clara entered the TARDIS.
Elise was sitting in her father's armchair reading something.
"Why were you smiling?" the Doctor asked.
"Was I? No, I wasn't," Clara said.
"You were smiling at nothing. I'd almost say you were in love, but to be honest..."
"Honest?"
"You're not a young woman anymore."
"Yes, I am."
"Well, you don't look it."
"I do look it."
"Oh, that's right, keep your spirits up." He started walking down the console steps. "Clara, Clara, Clara, Clara. Clara, Clara. Clara, Clara. I need something from you. I need the truth."
"Okay. Right, what is it? What's...?"
They sat down on the steps and the Doctor sighed.
"You're scared," Clara observed.
"I'm terrified," the Doctor confessed.
"Of what?"
"The answer to my next question, which must be honest and cold and considered, without kindness or restraint. Clara, be my pal and tell me, am I a good man?"
"I...don't know."
"Neither do I." He stood up and walked over to the console.
"Er, hey, no offence, but I've got plans."
"I need you."
Clara sighed and stood up. "Right. Where are we going?"
He put the TARDIS in flight. "Into darkness. Elise!"
Elise put her book down and joined them at the console as the Doctor explained what was going on.
Clara sipped her coffee. "A good Dalek?"
"There's no such thing," the Doctor told her.
"That's a bit inflexible. Not like you. I'd almost say prejudiced."
"They killed thousands of our people! And ravaged the galaxy! So no, there is no such thing as a good Dalek," Elise snapped.
The Doctor sighed and turned to Clara. "Do I pay you? I should give you a raise."
The TARDIS landed.
"You're not my boss, you're one of my hobbies," Clara reminded him.
"Come on."
They entered the lab and the Doctor quickly introduced everyone.
"This is gun girl. She's got a gun, and she's a girl. This is a sort of boss one. Are you the same one as before?"
"Yes," he said.
"I think he's probably her uncle, but I may have made that up to pass the time while they were talking. This is Clara, not my assistant. She's, er, some other word."
"I'm his carer," Clara said.
"Yeah, my carer. She cares so I don't have to."
Clara turned to Elise and nudged her. "C'mon. Crack a smile. That was funny."
Elise offered her a small smile.
"Wait, then who are you?" Journey asked Elise.
"I'm his daughter."
They entered the Dalek's room.
"Doctor."
"Hello again."
"Will you help me?"
"Will you?" Clara asked.
"A Dalek so damaged, it's turned good. Morality as malfunction," the Doctor said, "How do I resist?"
"Daleks must die. Daleks must die," the Dalek repeated.
"So, what do we do with a moral Dalek, then?" Clara asked.
"We get into its head," the Doctor told her.
"Mmm. How do you get into a Dalek's head?"
"That wasn't a metaphor."
They went back into the lab where they were given bracelets for the moleculon nanoscaler.
Elise stood off to the side and listened to Clara and Journey's conversation. "So, you've met someone?" Elise asked Clara.
"Yeah. You?"
"I wish."
Clara rubbed her back. "You will, Ellie."
"Okay, listen up. Now, remember, do not hold your breath when the nanoscaler engages. You'll feel like you want to, but you must keep breathing normally during the miniaturization process," Journey told them.
"Why?" Clara asked.
"Ever microwaved a lasagna without pricking the film on top?" the Doctor asked.
"It explodes."
"Don't be lasagna."
They climbed inside the nanoscaler.
Elise was seated between the Doctor and Journey as she tried to keep breathing. She still didn't like tight spaces, just like her first body. Elise tried to resist grabbing onto the Doctor.
"Breathe, Elise. Breathe," he told her.
"Nanoscaling successful. Everyone okay in there?" Journey's uncle asked.
They were picked up by a pair of tweezers.
"We made it. Nobody popped," Journey said.
"Whoa. Ha. I can't believe this," Clara breathed.
"No, neither can I," the Doctor said.
They were injected into the Dalek's eye-piece.
The Doctor reached out and his fingers went through it.
"We'll be following you all the way, Rescue One. Good luck all of you," Journey's uncle said.
"This is a bad idea," Elise told the Doctor and Clara.
"Most definitely," he said.
"And we're still gonna do it?"
"Yeah."
"That's what I thought."
The Doctor stuck his whole arm through the Dalek's eye.
In a second, they were inside the Dalek.
