Chapter 32 (In the Forest of the Night)
"Gifted and talented? Really?" the Doctor asked Clara as they walked through the forest.
"Furious, fearful, tongue-tied. They're all superpowers if you use them properly. Are they going to be all right?"
"They're in the TARDIS, the safest place on the planet."
There was a rumble and a statue started falling. They jumped back just in time for the statue to land in front of them.
"If this is an invasion..."
"What?"
"It's over. They're here, they've won. What do they want?"
They continued walking.
Clara glanced behind them.
"Doctor? Look behind us. The path we just walked down. It's overgrown already."
The Doctor picked up a pink phone. "Clara!"
Clara took it from the Doctor. "Why would she put her phone down?"
"Doesn't want to be followed? Lost a hold of it in a struggle? Left it as a clue, so we would know where she was going? Trail of breadcrumbs. Hansel and Gretel."
"I'm actually frightened. I never get frightened. Why am I frightened?"
"You just lost a little girl."
"Yes, that is a worry, but I know you'll find her. No, no, no. This is not a worry, this is a dread. Maebh!"
"You're pursuing a little lost girl through a mysterious forest. The path has disappeared. You find yourself with a strangely compelling masculine figure. Maebh!"
"Any minute now we're going to find a gingerbread cottage with a cannibal witch inside. Maebh!"
"Exactly. The forest. It's in all the stories that kept you awake at night. The forest is mankind's nightmare."
Clara, the Doctor, and Elise followed the trail of items Maebh had left.
The Doctor picked up a pencil case. "Clara. Is it hers?"
"Yes. Clever girl." Clara continued on, but they were stopped by someone in a hazmat suit.
"Get back! We're burning here. Stay back."
"We're looking for a little girl," Clara told them.
"Stay back. We're about to burn."
They attempted to burn the tree, but it didn't appear to ever burn.
"What's going on? Trees aren't responding to flame-thrower. I mean, they don't catch fire. They just don't catch. It's like they're flame proof or something."
The Doctor, Clara, and Elise continued deeper into the forest.
"Trees control the oxygen on this planet. They withhold it, they smother the fire. What sort of forest is clever? What sort of forest has its own in-built fire extinguisher?" the Doctor asked.
"What do they want?" Clara wondered.
"Why now?"
"What do you mean, why now?"
"The whole natural order is turning against this planet. But why? Why now?"
"Well, what else?"
The Doctor took out Maebh's notebook and showed Clara. "How did she know this?"
"What is it?"
"This is a massive solar flare headed for Earth, like the one that destroyed the Bank of Karabraxos. I've got an entire TARDIS and I didn't notice this. But she knew. How?"
"This is Maebh's. Where did you get this?"
"You left your marking in the TARDIS."
"Oh, great, right, well, that's just brilliant, isn't it. You don't think Danny saw this, do you?"
"Clara! There are bigger things to worry about!" Elise told her.
"Elise is right. I've just informed you that a solar flare is going to wipe out your planet. You're worried about a row with your boyfriend. How did she know this? She even put the date on it!"
"I always make them date their homework."
"It's today's date."
"Well, there must be a way?"
"They want something. They're saying something. If there is a way, the way is Maebh Arden."
"Okay, you know they're not really gifted and talented, don't you? I just tell them that to make them feel good."
"She's lost someone. People who've lost someone, they're always listening, always looking, always hoping. So, they notice more. They hear more."
They heard a wolf howl.
"Was that a howl?" Clara asked.
There was another howl.
"Was that a wolf? No. That is impossible. We're in London."
"Would that be the London with the zoo? The zoo with the pack of wolves? The zoo whose barriers and gates have probably been mangled by the trees? No, wolves are not impossible. Stick to the path, Red Riding Hood," the Doctor told her.
They looked around.
"There is no path."
The wolves howled.
"Then we're lunch."
They heard a scream.
"Maebh?" Clara called.
They followed the sound of her scream until they came to a fence with Maebh on the other side.
"Maebh! Doctor, give me a boost so I can pull her over. Maebh? Maebh!"
There was a nearby gate.
Maebh opened it and quickly shut it.
The Doctor walked up to her. "Maebh. You came looking for me. You didn't..."
She started waving her hands in front of her face.
"Maebh, Maebh, you didn't just stumble into the TARDIS. Tell me what you know."
"Doctor..." Clara said.
"This is important."
"Yes. Can we please deal with the wolves first?"
"These are zoo wolves. They're not even used to hunting."
"Doctor!"
The three wolves growled and bared their teeth.
"All right, okay. We've just got to look as if we're too much bother to eat, right? So, stay still. Stay together. Look big. Look big like a big four-headed, eight-legged scary thing!"
They all huddled together.
The wolves jumped the fence, whining and ran away.
"Ha ha! Told you they were rubbish. Those wolves are terrified."
"What are wolves frightened of?" Clara asked.
There was a deep growl and a tiger emerged from the trees. It walked up to the fence and roared.
"There are very good solid scientific reasons for being really quite frightened just now."
A bright light appeared, blinding the tiger. It growled, but retreated anyway.
They tuned around and saw Danny.
The children all cheered.
"Mister Pink! Why, thank you very much," Clara said.
"Ah, no problem. Just decided it was best not to leave you alone with him. They've worked well together. Noticeable increase in confidence and energy levels," Danny told her.
Maebh was waving her hands in front of her face again.
Why is she doing that? Elise asked.
Not sure. I have a hunch though the Doctor answered.
"Well done. And for saving us from a tiger, too," Clara said.
"Er, has she had her medication yet?" Danny asked.
"Oh. No, I..."
"No, no. Not her medication. We don't want to shut her up. We want to know what she knows. Maebh, what's the. Maebh, what is this? What is this?" the Doctor asked her. The Doctor mimicked her hand movements.
"Apart from being almost savaged by a tiger and abducted by a Scotsman, she's allowed any nervous tics she likes, okay?" Danny said.
The Doctor got in Danny's face. "This is not a nervous tic. This is react..."
"Please! Just give her her tablets. She's been in a state since her sister went missing," Ruby said.
Maebh ran off.
"Maebh!" Elise yelled, taking off after her.
Danny started yelling her name as well and ran after her with the children following.
They came to a clearing with a couple of chairs where the sun was shining through the tress.
"Miss? What is it, miss?" Ruby asked Clara.
"It's coming. It's coming for everyone, and I can't unthink it," Maebh said.
Elise knelt next to her. "What do you mean, Maebh?"
"Maebh. Maebh, this forest is communicating. With you. Nobody else. No technology can hear what it's saying, but you can. Tell us what it wants. Where it came from. Just tell me who did this," the Doctor said.
"It was me. I did this. I did these trees."
"No, Maebh. You didn't make a global forest appear overnight. How could you do that?"
"Thoughts come to me. Ever since Annabel went missing, I look for her everywhere. I don't find her, but I find thoughts. The big forest was one. I thought everyone would love it. The thoughts! The thoughts! They go so fast."
"This is stressing me now. When I get stressed, I forget my anger management," one of the boys said.
"Maebh, can you see something that we can't see?" Clara asked.
"Nearly. Too fast. Everywhere," Maubh answered.
"Everything's subject to gravity. If I can create a little local increase..." the Doctor said. He pulled out his sonic screwdriver.
Danny started to argue. "No. You're not experimenting on..."
Golden lights appeared around Maebh's head. "They're lovely! They don't like it when you're holding them. They want you to let them go," Maebh told him.
"Who are they?"
A deep voice came out of Maebh. "We are Here. Here, always, since the beginning and until the end."
"Here? That's it?"
"We are the green shoots that grow between the cracks, the grass that grows over the mass graves. After your wars are over, we will still be Here. We are the life that prevails."
Like the Souls with Cyril and Lily! Elise guessed.
Or the Vashta Nerada the Doctor added.
Elise looked at the Doctor. Who?
The Doctor just shook his head and ignored Elise's question. "Why now? Why are you here now?"
"We hear the call and we come, as we came before to the great North Forest, where we lie still in a great circle. As we came to the vast Southern Forest."
"Who is calling you now?"
"The sun that creates. The sun that destroys. You are hurting us. Let us go."
"You sent for me. The girl came looking for me. Why? Why me?"
"We did not send. Pain. Did not send for you. We don't know you. We were here before you and will be here after you."
The Doctor stopped sonicing the area around Maebh.
"That was actually quite cool," one of the boys said.
Maebh fell to her knees.
Elise was the first one at her side. "Maebh! Can you hear me, sweetie? Are you okay?"
Danny and the Doctor came over to them.
"Maebh, you came looking for the Doctor. Think. Who sent you for the Doctor?"
"It was just a thought. It was just a thought that came. I think it came from Miss."
Danny looked at Clara.
"They've gone. Why does everything have to go?" Maebh asked.
The Doctor and Clara stepped off the side while Elise cared for Maebh.
She was just a scared little girl. Like Elise has once been.
