Chapter 30 (Flatline)
A/N - I'm bbbbbaaaaaccccckkkkk. I've watched the first special of the 60th anniversary and I'm inspired again. We're quickly approaching another birthday for this series. I can't promise to never disappear again, but I will give you this little tidbit.
I will be writing the 60th anniversary, but it won't be Elise participating in the adventure. You can discuss your theories, but as usual I will neither confirm nor deny.
The Doctor looked out the doors. "Er, we're on the train lines. And there's a train coming. Of course there is."
"Short-term re-materialization?" Elise asked.
"Not enough power," the Doctor told her.
"Teleport?"
"Not enough power."
"Re-route the heart of the TARDIS through..."
"Not enough power! Not enough power!"
"Then think of something!"
The train honked its horn, signaling it's imminent arrival.
"Can't you move the TARDIS?" Clara asked.
"Clara, there is no power. The TARDIS couldn't boil an egg at the moment. Listen, do what you can to get those people out of there. You're stronger than you know."
"No, I mean can you move the TARDIS. Like the Addams Family?"
Elise let out a sharp laugh.
The Doctor stuck his hand out the door, but with the gravity in the TARDIS, Elise couldn't tell if they were moving or not. He closed the door singing the Addams Family song as Elise added the snaps.
It was times like these that she could see the man who raised her.
The TARDIS suddenly vibrated and the Doctor looked out the doors. He dove under the console and pulled a lever.
It suddenly started to get very cold in the TARDIS.
Elise rubbed her arms.
"I don't know if you can still hear me out there, but the TARDIS is now in siege mode. No way in, no way out. I managed to turn it on just before the train hit. But there's not enough power left now to turn it off," the Doctor said.
The Doctor opened a compartment and pulled out a blanket. He wrapped it around Elise. "I can't have you regenerating on me due to hypothermia. The TARDIS is already in siege mode and you would destroy it."
Elise scoffed. "Thanks." She walked up the stairs and curled up in the Doctor/her armchair.
Meanwhile, the Doctor watched the glitchy monitor.
The TARDIS started to grow darker and colder.
The Doctor walked up the stairs and sat next to Elise. He took her freezing cold hand in his. "Life support failing. I don't know if you'll ever hear this, Clara. I don't even know if you're still alive out there. But you were good! And you made a mighty fine Doctor."
Elise squeezed the Doctor's hand with what little strength she had left. "You and me. No matter what."
The lights started to come back on in the TARDIS.
The Doctor ran to the console and started pressing buttons and flipping levers.
The sound of the TARDIS' signature wheezing woke Elise up. She smiled. "She did it." Elise threw the blanket off and stood up.
"I tried to talk. I want you to remember that. I tried to reach out, I tried to understand you, but I think that you understand us perfectly. And I think you just don't care. And I don't know whether you are here to invade, infiltrate or just replace us. I don't suppose it really matters now. You are monsters. That is the role you seem determined to play. So it seems I must play mine," the Doctor said.
He exited the TARDIS. "The man that stops the monsters. I'm sending you back to your own dimension. Who knows? Some of you may even survive the trip. And, if you do, remember this. You are not welcome here. This plane is protected. I am the Doctor."
He turned as Clara threw him his screwdriver. "And I name you The Boneless." He zapped the Boneless and they disintegrated.
He turned to Elise, who was smiling. "What?"
"I love it when you make a speech."
"Really?"
She nodded. "Mmhm." She turned to go back into the TARDIS.
The Doctor smiled and flipped his screwdriver in the air. "Still got it."
The Doctor transported everyone back to where the TARDIS had initially landed.
Everyone got out and one man kissed the ground.
Clara laughed while Rigsy used her phone to call his mum. "You all right?" Clara asked the man.
"I'm alive, and I've been inside that. I think I'm up on the deal. Come here." The man and Clara hugged. The man walked off.
"Are you okay?" the Doctor asked Clara.
"I'm alive."
"And a lot of people died."
"It's like a forest fire, though, isn't it? The objective is to save the great trees, not the brushwood. Am I right?" the grumpy man from earlier said.
"It wasn't a fire, those weren't trees, those were people."
"They were Community Payback scumbags, I wouldn't lose any sleep."
"I bet you wouldn't."
"It's good to be alive though. Thank you. Seriously, thank you." The man walked off as well.
"Yes, a lot of people died and maybe the wrong people survived."
"Yeah, but we saved the world, right?" Clara asked.
"We did. You did."
"Okay, so, on balance..."
"Balance?"
"Yeah, that's how you think, isn't it?"
"Largely so other people don't have to."
"Yeah, well, I was you today. I was the Doctor. And, apparently, I was quite good at it."
"You heard that, did you?"
"Yeah, but the power was going off so I suppose you were delirious. You didn't know what you were saying."
"Yes."
Rigsy walked up to the Doctor, Clara, and Elise.
"Ah! The return of the fluorescent pudding brain."
"You do realize he can hear you now?"
"I know. Your last painting was so good it saved the world. I can't wait to see what you do next."
Rigsy laughed. "It's not going to be easy. I've got a hair band to live up to. Thanks." He held a hand out to Clara, but she pulled him in for a hug. Rigsy said goodbye and left.
"Admit it. I did well," Clara said, not letting go of the earlier conversation. Her phone rang and she ignored it.
"Is that PE?" the Doctor asked.
"Just say it. Why can't you just say it? Why can't you just say I did good?"
"Talk to soldier boy."
"It's not him. Come on, why can't you say it? I was the Doctor and I was good."
"You were an exceptional Doctor, Clara."
"Thank you."
"Goodness had nothing to do with it." The Doctor turned and went back into the TARDIS.
Elise followed him inside. She walked up to the console and looked at the Doctor.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing. It's nothing."
"Whatever."
Their relationship would never be the same, but Elise was starting to get the hang of this new dynamic.
