Chapter 6

"Oswin, I think we're close," the Doctor told her.

"You are. Less than twenty feet away. Which is the good news."

"Okay. And the bad, which I suddenly feel is coming?"

"You're about to pass through Intensive Care."

The door raised, revealing Daleks in cages.

Elise moved closer to her father.

"What's so special about this lot, then?" he asked.

"Don't know. Survivors of particular wars. Spiridon, Kembel, Aridius, Vulcan, Exxilon. Ringing any bells?"

"All of them."

"Yeah? How?"

"These are the Daleks who survived me."

Elise knew the Doctor had been involved in the Time War, but had he really been in that many battles? Her mind briefly flashed to the Naismith Mansion when the Doctor had the gun trained at Rassilon. He looked like he knew how to handle that and that fact just made Elise sad for him.

The Daleks around them started saying the Doctor's name.

"That's weird. Those ones don't usually wake up for anything," Oswin told them.

"Yeah, well special visitor."

The found a door.

"Okay, door, but it won't open. I can't be far away, though." The Doctor soniced the door.

"Hang on. Not quite sure. There's a release code. Let me just...Anything happening out there?" Oswin asked.

"No," the Doctor said, "Hang on, I'm trying to think."

One of the Daleks near them broke through its chains. "Doctor. Doctor."

"Oswin, get this door open. Oswin, open this door!" the Doctor yelled.

The Daleks were closing in on them.

"I can't!" Oswin yelled.

"Oswin! Just get this door open! Oswin! Oswin, please! Get this door open! Help us!" A plunger was headed for the Doctor's face.

The Daleks suddenly stopped and then turned away from them.

Elise's legs gave out and she slid to the floor.

"Oh, that is cool. Tell me I'm cool, chin boy," Oswin said.

"What, what did you do?" the Doctor asked.

"Hang on, I think I've found the door thingy."

"No, tell me what you did."

"The Daleks, they have a hive mind. Well, they don't, they have a sort of telepathic web."

"The path web, yes."

"I hacked into it, did a mass delete on all the information connected with the Doctor."

"You made them forget me?"

"Good, eh? And here comes the door."

The door rose, causing Elise to fall onto her back. She opened her eyes and saw herself staring at a white ceiling.

"I've tried hacking into the path web. Even I couldn't do it," the Doctor said as he entered the room.

"Come and meet the girl who can. Hey, you're right outside. Come on in," Oswin told them.

"Oswin, we have a problem."

Elise sat up and turned around, her eyes going wide.

"No, we don't. Don't even say that. Joined the Alaska to see the universe, ended up stuck in a shipwreck first time out. Rescue me, chin boy, and show me the stars."

"Does it look real to you?"

"Does what look real?"

"Where you are right now. Does it seem real?"

"It is real."

"It's a dream, Oswin. You dreamed it for yourself because the truth was too terrible."

The horrible truth was that Oswin wasn't a girl, she was a Dalek chained up in a padded room.

"Where am I? Where am I? Where am I?"

"Because you are a Dalek."

"I am not a Dalek. I am not a Dalek! I'm human!"

The Doctor winced, hearing those words. "You were human when you crashed here. It was you who climbed out of the pod. That was your ladder."

"I'm human."

"Not any more. Because you're right. You're a genius. And the Daleks need genius. They didn't just make you a puppet, they did a full conversion. Oswin, I am so sorry, but you are a Dalek. The milk, Oswin. The milk and the eggs for the soufflés. Where, where did it all come from?"

"Eggs."

"It wasn't real. It was never real."

"Eggs. Stir. Min. Ate."

"Oswin..."

"Eggs. Stir. Min ate. Exterminate." Oswin broke free of her chains and rolled towards the Doctor and Elise.

"Oswin. No, no, no, Oswin. Oswin."

"Exterminate!"

"Listen. Oswin, you don't have to do this."

"Exterminate!"

"Oswin!"

Oswin had them backed up against the door when she started crying. "Why do they hate you so much? They hate you so much. Why?" she asked.

"I fought them many, many times."

"We have grown stronger in fear of you."

The Doctor hung his head. "I know. I tried to stop."

"Then run."

"What did you say?"

"I've taken down the forcefield. The Daleks above have begun their attack. Run!"

"Oswin, are you...?"

"I am Oswin Oswald. I fought the Daleks and I am human! Remember me."

"Thank you."

"Run!"

The Doctor grabbed Elise's hand and they ran as things around them exploded. They ran back into the teleport room to find Amy and Rory kissing.

"Right, go! Let's go. We're good. Let's go."

Amy and Rory kept kissing.

"Oh, for God's sake." He grabbed the button from Rory and pressed it.

A second later, they were standing in the TARDIS.

The Doctor ran to the monitor.

"Explain, Dalek Supreme!" the Prime Minister demanded.

"You know, you guys should really have seen this coming. The thing about me and teleports, I've got a really good aim. Pin-point accurate, in fact. Or, to put it another way..." He popped out of the TARDIS doors. "Suckers!"

"Identify yourself. Identify. Identify," the Daleks demanded.

"It's me. You know me. The Doctor. The Oncoming Storm. The Predator."

"Titles are not meaningful in this context. Doctor who?" the Dalek puppet asked.

"Doctor who?" the Prime Minister asked.

The Daleks around them echoed the phrase.

"Oh, Oswin. Oh, you did it to them all. You beauty," the Doctor said, "Fellas, you're never going to stop asking." He shut the door and they took off.

They dropped the Ponds off before setting off on their next adventure.

Elise giggled as the Doctor danced around the controls chanting, "Doctor who. Doctor who. Doctor Who!"
