Chapter 20

A/N - Wow. Chapter 20. I think this calls for a celebration of an extra chapter today!

They made it to the roof and through a small window, but Clara got stuck.

"Come on, quickly! What are you doing?" the Doctor asked her.

"My bustle is stuck."

"Your bustle?"

The Doctor and Elise tugged on her arms and she landed on top of the Doctor.

"You're going to have to take those clothes off." He blushed when he realized what he said.

"I didn't mean."

"I know."

"I just..."

"I understand, I do."

"Good."

"Now, what's the plan?"

"Who said I've got a plan?"

"Course you've got a plan. You took that." Clara grabbed the umbrella.

"Maybe I'm an idiot."

The two of them stood up.

"You're not. You're clever. Really clever," Clara told him.

"Are you?" He tossed the umbrella to Clara. "If I've got a plan, what is it? You tell me."

"That's the way to do it!"

"Is this a test?"

"Yes."

"What will it do to us?"

"Kill us."

"That's the way to do it!"

The ice woman dissolved into snowflakes and started to reform on the roof.

"So, come on then. Plan. Do I have one?" the Doctor asked.

"Oh, I know what your plan is. I knew straight away." Clara tossed the umbrella back to the Doctor.

"No, you didn't."

"Course I did."

The Doctor tossed the umbrella back to her. "Show me."

"Why should I?"

Elise was starting to get impatient. Couldn't they focus for five minutes?

"Because we'll be dead in under thirty seconds. Do I have a plan?"

"If we'd been escaping, we'd be climbing down the building. If we'd been hiding, we'd be on the other side of the roof. But no, we're standing right here."

"So?"

"So!" Clara pulled the TARDIS ladder down with the umbrella.

The Doctor smiled seeing her figure it out.

"After you," Clara told him.

"After you."

"After you, I'm wearing a dress. Eyes front, soldier!"

"My eyes are always front!" The Doctor started climbing the ladder.

"Mine aren't."

Elise rolled her eyes as the Doctor turned around to look at Clara. "Stop it."

"No."

Elise climbed up after her father, leaving Clara to head up the back.

They quickly reached the staircase.

"So you can move your cloud? You can control it?" Clara asked.

"No. No one can control clouds, that would be silly. The wind, a little bit."

The ice woman was climbing the staircase.

"She's following us."

"That's the idea. Keep her away from the snow. So. Barmaid or governess, which is it?"

"That thing is after us, and you want a chat?"

"Well, we can't chat after we've been horribly killed, can we?"

"How did we get up so high so quick?"

"Clever staircase. It's taller on the inside."

That made absolutely no sense.

When they reached the top, the Doctor turned around and soniced the staircase.

"What am I standing on, what's this made of?"

"Super dense water vapor. Should keep her trapped for the moment." He flipped the screwdriver in his hand and put in his jacket.

"Do you actually live up here on a cloud, in a box?" Clara asked.

"I have done for a long time now."

"Blimey, you really know how to sulk, don't you?"

"I'm not sulking."

"You live in a box!"

"That's no more a box than you are a governess."

"Oh, spoken like a man. You know, you're the same as all the rest. Sweet little Clara, works at the Rose and Crown, ideas above her station."

The Doctor and Elise walked into the TARDIS, Clara following.

"Well, for your information, I'm not sweet on the inside, and I'm certainly not..."

The lights in the console room came on.

"Little."

The Doctor turned to her.

"It's called the TARDIS. It can travel anywhere in time and space. And it's mine."

Elise cleared her throat.

"I mean, ours."

"But this...look at it, it's..."

"Go on, say it. Most people do."

Clara ran outside and then back in. "It's smaller on the outside."

Elise giggled.

"Okay, that is a first."

"Is it magic? Is it a machine?"

"It's a ship."

Clara laughed. "A ship?"

"Best ship in the universe."

"Is there a kitchen?"

"Another first."

"I don't know why I asked that. It's just...I like making soufflés."

Both the Doctor and Elise looked at her. Wait. There was no way it was possible.

"Soufflés?" the Doctor asked.

"Why are you showing me all this?"

"You followed me, remember? I didn't invite you."

"You're nearly a foot taller than I am. Then both of us girls."

Clara held up the umbrella. "You could've reached the ladder without this. You took it for me." She tossed it to the Doctor. "Why?"

The Doctor walked up to her and pulled a key out of his pocket. "I never know why. I only know who." He held up the key and then placed it in Clara's hand.

"What's this?"

"Me. Giving in."

Tears started to fill Clara's eyes. "I don't know why I'm crying."

"I do. Remember this. This right now, remember all of it. Because this is the day. This is the day. This is the day everything begins." The Doctor ran to the console.

Both Clara and Elise were beaming with happiness when the ice woman grabbed Elise.

"Daddy!" Elise screamed.

"Elise!" the Doctor yelled as she reached for him.

The ice woman dragged Elise out of the TARDIS onto the cloud.

"Let me go!" Elise screamed, "Daddy!"

"Water vapor doesn't stop ice. I should have realized."

"Daddy, please."

"Let her go! Let her go now!"

Clara looked at the young girl and made a choice. She grabbed Elise's arms as they were both dragged to the edge of the cloud.

"Clara! No."

The three of them went over the side of the cloud.

"Elise! Clara!" he yelled as the two fell off, "No!"

Tears filled Elise's eyes. Being a Timelord, Elise knew what would happen next. She should have been more careful!

The ice lady shattered as the two women hit the ground.

"What was that?" Madame Vastra asked. She and Jenny rushed to the window.

"Oh my god. It's Clara and Elise," Jenny said.

Madame Vastra's device beeped, showing that both of them were on the verge of death.

"But...that means..." Jenny said.

Madame Vastra nodded. "Our little Timelord is about to regenerate for the first time".

The next thing Elise knew, she was inside the TARDIS and her father was leaning over her.

"It's going to be okay", he told her.

She stood up as her hands started to glow. Her eyes went wide as she realized what was happening.

"You and me, no matter what", he told her.

She nodded and threw her hands out as golden energy exploded from her.

The Doctor's mouth dropped open as he watched her regenerate from a brunette to a fiery redhead. Her once blue eyes were now a cool green. So this was when she had regenerated!

"Woah. That was...weird..." she said, examining her hands. Her voice sounded different. Was...was that...a Scottish accent?

"You...Amy..." her father breathed. He finally understood where the accent had come from.

"Amy. Amelia. Auntie Amy", Elise said, "Elise Amelia Smith". Her father had never given her a middle name.

"It suits you", her father told her.

Madame Vastra walked in and said, "Hello, my dear".

"I know your name. What is your name?" Elise asked herself.

"Easy. Don't overwork yourself", her father told her.

"I'm find dad!" she snapped.

Madame Vastra's eyes went wide, while the Doctor smiled. She was exactly how he remembered she was, even at the beginning.

"Oh, that was mean", she said, "I'm sorry."

"It's quite alright. You've had a shock. Perhaps you should lie down", the Doctor told her.

Elise backed away from her father. "I don't want to lie down", she said.

"Elise, please", the Doctor said.

"I said I feel..." Elise fainted and the Doctor rushed forward to catch her. He carried her to a room in Vastra's house. He didn't need her waking up and wandering off.

Good to know she was just as combative as he remembered her being.

He kissed her forehead and stroked her hair. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you." He stood up and left the room, turning to Vastra and Jenny. "I want to know the moment she wakes up. Do you understand? I need to be here. She'll be confused and scared."

The two nodded.
