Chapter 21 | Unlikely alliance
Lilia was heading to the room where she had met Princess Arianne a few days prior. The Dornish Princess had invited her over to break their fast together, which came as a huge surprise to Lilia. Arianne liked to embarrass Lilia, of that the northern girl was sure. If that wasn't the truth, why would she invest some of her free time on making her uncomfortable?
Either way, Lilia didn't have much of a choice, since she was a guest that the Martells did the kindness of welcoming into their home. And since Myrcella was going to break her fast with the Prince of Dorne and her betrothed, Lilia had absolutely no possible excuse she could come up with.
As she walked inside the chamber Lilia had first met Princess Arianne in, she noticed the people inside. There were only men that time around, which didn't make Lilia any less uncomfortable. She wondered if Princess Arianne did that on purpose and she jumped into the conclusion that the Dornish young woman did it out of pleasure and out of fun.
Arianne jumped off the makeshift bed full of pillows and put on a dress to cover herself with, smiling and grabbing a grape, bitting it sensually. Lilia watched as Arianne analysed her. As usual, Lilia would feel like a fish of the river in the sea, which in part, was what she was. Even though she was a wolf, a part of her would always be a fish.
She had thought about making her coat of arms a wolf with a fish. Perhaps it would be strange, and it would have to be thought about very carefully, but it was a possibility.
"Lady Stark, have a seat" she insisted, making Lilia take it silently. The boy Arianne was with came towards her and they shared a long and passionate kiss. "You're dismissed. Leave me with Lady Stark"
Everybody left the room, leaving the Dornish Princess alone with Lilia. Arianne had an agenda, she wanted to defy her father for what she had heard and also for what she had realized. Lilia Stark being there was an opportunity she could not waste.
She gave Lilia orange cakes, which Lilia accepted shyly and gave Arianne a grateful smile. She took a bite and felt the sour, yet sweet flavour that it brought her to take over herself.
"Thank you" she simply said as she stared at Arianne Martell, who just drank a cup of tea which had been brought by the Maester. Arianne drank it all at once, and when she was finished she simply smiled at Lilia.
"Moon Tea. I don't need any children for now" she said as Lilia blushed at the young woman's boldness. "Well, my father wants me to befriend Myrcella Baratheon who is nothing but a child. I've tried to do as he asked me to but she's boring. You, on the other hand, you are an interesting girl. I'd like for us to be friends"
"I would appreciate that very much, Princess," Lilia said politely, as the dark-skinned girl rolled her eyes at the formality the she-wolf had used to address her.
"Quit the fancy titles, Lilia. Call me Arianne" she asked as Lilia nodded still very uneasy with the sudden change in the Martell's behaviour. "I've heard your brother has been doing quite well in the battles"
"I've been kept from the information but so I've heard" Lilia confessed a little sad at the mentioning of her brother. She wondered if she was ever going to see him again at that point, which she hoped she would. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she also acknowledged the fact that Robb was stubborn and very protective over his family. He wouldn't leave her at the Lannisters' mercy, of that she was sure. "He is a good military man"
"Indeed, they call him the Young Wolf, the boy who holds Ser Jaime Lannister as a prisoner and who has never lost a battle" Lilia smiled at the mentioning of that. She never knew that her brother had managed to win every battle he had ever thought. She was filled with pride and hope for a better future. "Merchants say that he has Tywin Lannister under control and that is something that no one has ever managed to do. The last ones who rebelled against him were wiped off"
"The wolf blood" Lilia muttered as she remembered her father's words. He used to say that he had seven children but that only three of them had not been touched by the wolf's blood. Robb, Lilia and Arya were always the ones who had shown how rebellious they were, but little Rickon himself did not stand far behind. The only thing about him was the fact that Rickon was still a baby, he wasn't old enough to actually have a personality. Out of all her brothers, baby Rickon was the one she didn't have the chance to spend much time with. Nevertheless, she made her find a sort of patience she didn't think she had in her. Only Jon, Sansa and Bran escaped the rule. Sansa, who didn't have much of the North in her neither did she want to have, Jon who was too quiet to actually show his opinions, and Bran who only wanted to be a soldier and who was the most peaceful boy she had ever known. "My father used to say that Robb reminded him of his late brother, Brandon. My uncle was murdered because of his temper but Robb won't. Robb is the King in the North"
"It might be so, but your brother does not have enough support" Lilia's eyebrows furrowed as she listened to what Arianne Martell said. "He declared for Renly Baratheon but now Renly Baratheon is dead. Stannis Baratheon is the biggest threat in the South but it's not enough. Your brother needs more men"
"Even if that's so, Stannis Baratheon is going to strike King's Landing" Lilia explained to her. "Once he does, Robb will bend the knee and my sister shall go home and all will be well"
"Have you not lived with the Lannisters long enough to know fully well that they won't lose?" Arianne pointed out with a smirk. "Tyrion Lannister is known to share the same diplomacy and political agility with his father. What do you expect from him?"
"You did not invite me here so that we could bond over cake and wine, did you?" Lilia realized as Arianne Martell jumped on the makeshift bed. "What are you trying to suggest?"
"That you do something for your brother," Arianne said as if it was nothing. What she was doing was treason, she could die for it, and yet she stood in her makeshift bed as calm as one could be when enjoying the sun. "He is the biggest threat to the Lannisters at this moment but if they ally themselves with another House it will be fatal. You need a Southern army"
"I'm a hostage and I'm not in my brother's war council, I do not get to make war plans for him" Lilia explained to the girl who laughed at the Stark girl's response. Arianne knew that Lilia would come to agree with her and she needed a way to show her father that she was powerful on her own and worthy of being his successor, proving him that Quentyn would not do a better job.
"Stop being a hostage, stop being the victim and put on your armour!" Arianne called the girl to reason. "We live in a Realm which is being ripped apart by the war. Every corner you turn there is a new King and you must defend yours! So it's time to stop whimpering and fighting back!"
"And how can I do that? I'm nothing but a bloody woman, property of the Crown!" she yelled back out of rage. "What can I do? How can I fight back if I'm locked away?!"
"Take control over your own life!" Arianne screamed back. She could see what Lilia Stark meant when talking about the wolf's blood. She could see the she-wolf in front of her but Arianne was a snake, and she would not let a wolf diminish her or frighten her. They needed each other and Arianne needed to make Lilia Stark a leader before she achieved her goal. "House Tyrell has not declared for anyone yet and you were to marry Willas Tyrell. Before he gets to do that, you'll go to Highgarden and you'll manage to seduce that boy and you will marry him! After that, he will march against the Lannisters with you!"
"And how will I do that? I'm stuck in the middle of sand and snakes! The Lannisters have spies everywhere and if they learn about your conspiracy, they will..." Lilia tried to argue back, making Arianne go against her.
"Strike me down? They can't. They know that Dorne would never return to the fold again, not after what they did to Princess Elia and her children" Arianne said. "And I will help you escape, little wolf. You are not a pup anymore, and you have to stop being a little wolf and rise once and for all!"
"And what makes you think that it would be possible? What about your father? He doesn't seem fond of the idea of getting involved in this war!" Lilia pointed out still not knowing what to do. The truth was that she was afraid of making a stupid mistake, a fatal one. She didn't want to leave her sister alone in that viper's nest.
"He doesn't have to be, he'll be forced to once I marry your brother" the words hit Lilia like a horse. Slowly, yet all at once. As she tried to absorb all the information, Arianne took a step closer to her and held her hands. "You need help escaping Dorne and I need your help to get a chance to avenge my family. We need each other and we must work together, as one"
"Very well, I will do as you say," Lilia said as she stood up as she turned her back on Arianne Martell. "But I still have something to do before we leave"
"We can't leave right now, it's going to take some time to do that. I must inform my cousins, they will help us" Arianne said as she stopped to think what Lilia Stark had to do in Dorne of such importance. She smiled as she realized what it was. She had been there as well and she didn't mind that the girl went after him. "Go ahead, before it's too late"
Lilia took a last look at Arianne Martell as she left the room. She ran towards the gardens as she tried to reach him, and once she laid eyes on his blond hair, she ran towards him.
"My Lady, what...?" he didn't have the time to say anything else since she crashed their lips together.
