ThorBruce Week 2021, Day 3: Undercover as a Couple
I literally could not think of ANYTHING for this prompt, but I didn’t want to do the other one. It's crappy and portably has a ton of plot holes. Sorry lol.
Also, I'm sorry this is two days late! I already have Day 6's prompt written, so hopefully I can catch up!
Trigger warning: homophobia, kidnapping, a deragatory slur, and conversion therapy.
Word Count: 4,758
It was a Friday afternoon in the Avenger’s Compound. Tony was working in the lab, Steve, Bucky, Nat, and Sam were training, and Thor and Bruce happened to walk into the kitchen at the same time for lunch. Bruce was frying a panini while Thor attempted to fry an egg (he’d been practicing every day that week). The scientist monitored him to be sure he wouldn’t burn the kitchen down. The god had been taking cooking lessons from practically everyone in the compound.
“How has your day been so far, Doctor Banner?” Thor asked, trying to make conversation.
“Please, just call me Bruce. There’s no need for formality.” He glanced around, then whispered, “I’m not like Stephen.” They both chuckled before Bruce continued. “I’ve been pretty good. I watched a documentary this morning about detecting black holes and the effects they have on gravity and time. It was very intriguing.” He blushed. “Sorry, I’m a bit of a space nerd.”
Thor smiled. “No, it’s quite alright. I like space, too. I’m not sure what black holes are though.”
“They’re things in space that have such a strong gravitational pull that nothing can escape once sucked in. They’re like giant space vacuums, I guess. Not even light can escape. Because of their powerful gravity, scientists have been able to detect them with recently-developed technology.”
“That’s cool,” Thor replied. He glanced at his egg. “Oh, I think it’s done!” He gasped.
Bruce looked over. “It’s a little brown around the edges, but it looks good. Nice job, Thor!” The two high-fived. Thor slid the egg onto a plate and sat at the kitchen island. The smaller man joined a minute later with his panini. The god listened intently as Bruce talked more about the black hole documentary. He loved listening to him talk and getting a glimpse of what was going on in that brain of his. He wished Bruce knew how much he admired him.
The elevator dinged as Peter walked out. Bruce checked his watch. It was already 4:00, which was usually when the teen came over (when he wasn’t at his Aunt May’s, that is).
The boy let his bag slide off his shoulder and onto the floor beside the doorway. He shuffled over to the fridge with his head down, rummaging around. He closed the door after a moment, a GoGurt in hand.
“Hey Peter, how was school?” Bruce asked.
“Fine,” he mumbled. “I think I’m gonna go to my room.”
The scientist furrowed his eyebrows. “Is something wrong? You can talk to Thor and me if you need to.”
Peter sighed, then sat down beside them at the island. “I was talking to some of the local crime-fighters today, and apparently there’s a rumor going around of a new therapist in Queens. They’re advertised to be LGBT friendly, but some people aren’t coming back from their appointments. I talked to Aunt May, and she said the gay couple down the hall has been gone for about a week now.” Peter started crying, sitting the unopened GoGurt on the table and putting his head in his hands. “A-And I’m scared. I have a lot of friends in the community that I don’t want getting hurt. A-And I’m trans, so I’m in danger too.”
“Hey, take a deep breath, okay?” Bruce said in a soothing voice. “Do you want some of my water? I haven’t drank from it yet.”
Peter nodded and accepted the glass.
“Now, did the other crime fighters give you a name?” Bruce asked.
The teen shook his head. “People have gone missing before they could report them. All I know is that they’re advertised as LGBT friendly. I think some people have even been taken from night clubs. Is there anything we can do?”
The three looked up as a sweaty Sam walked into the kitchen, a towel thrown over his shoulder. “What’s going on here?” he asked.
Peter explained everything to him. Sam’s eyes widened. “Wow. I’m a social worker, but I haven’t heard anything like that happening around here. I’ll ask some of my other friends to see if I can get a name. I’ll also do some legal research.”
“I-I just don’t want anyone else to get hurt. Queens is my domain. I’m supposed to protect the people there,” Peter fretted.
“Hey,” Sam rubbed his shoulder. “Not everyone is your responsibility just because you’re a superhero. Your health and safety is above everyone else's. We don’t need you to be the next victim if you try to intervene.”
Peter nodded slowly. “I just want to do something .”
“I understand. I do, too. Would calling an Avenger's meeting about it help?”
The boy nodded. “That would be great.”

“So, Nat and Bucky will track down these two scumbags, and we can go from there,” Tony announced from the head of the table, going into protective dad mode.
“I have a proposition,” Thor announced, raising his hand.”
“Fire away,” Tony replied.
“A pair of us could pose as a couple. They won’t be expecting Avengers, but maybe they’d try to kidnap us harder since we’re heroes. We could make a trap: two of us could go in their office for therapy while more of us are stationed outside, lying in wait for them. We could also wear earpieces so you can listen in for when they do try to kidnap us.”
Tony tapped a finger against his chin. "That could work. Good idea, Point Break. Now the question is, who is going to pose as the couple?"
"Well isn't it obvious?" Thor replied. "Bruce and me!" He was met with stares, including one from the small scientist beside him.
"Please elaborate," Bruce said.
"Well, if you and I were pretend-dating, maybe we'd have some conflict because I'm not from earth. You know, with having to travel and not understanding cultural stuff. Plus, Tony might be a bit too suspicious since he's a billionaire, and Stephen is a wizard--"
"Sorcerer"
--"Sorcrer. Son of Will is a social worker, so that won't work because then they would be major sus--"
"Peter, what did I say about teaching Thor gen z references?" Tony scolded. The teen blushed. "Continue."
“Sergeant Barnes has had bad experiences with psychiatrists, from what I recall.” Thor shrugged. “ I’m not sure what other reasons I can give, but I feel like Bruce and I would be a power couple, so to speak. I’m a god, so I could easily take them, and Bruce can turn into Hulk. Plus--no offense to Bruce--the ‘therapists’ probably wouldn’t be surprised because of my family issues and Bruce’s past as well.”
Tony smiled. “I think you’ve convinced us enough. I think now we just gotta know what Bruce thinks.”
Bruce shrugged. “I’ll do anything to help fight injustice.”
The billionaire clapped his hands together. “Then it’s settled.”

Scott, Kurt, and Luis dropped Thor and Bruce off at the front door of a tiny office in Queens. The other Avengers were posted both around the front and back of the building.
“So...Valentina Allegra de Fantaine and John Walker,” Bruce declared, looking at his phone. Nat and Bucky found them rather quickly. Not many therapists had private practices in Queens.
Thor opened the door for his “partner”. They approached the front desk where a blond in scrubs--presumably John Walker--sat scrolling through his phone. He looked up upon seeing the pair.
“My boyfriend and I have a ten o’clock consultation with Doctor Fantaine.”
“First time?” Walker asked.
They nodded.
“Follow me,” he instructed. He led them down a hallway. And knocked on the first door. “Your ten o’clock is here,” he yelled.
“Bring them in,” A muffled female voice replied.
Bruce gulped as he followed Thor inside. Tony made the two run a backstory by him to reduce conflicting details. He promised to chime in through the earpiece if he felt the need to.
“Hello, gentlemen,” Valentina greeted from behind her desk. A pair of chairs sat in front of it. Thor pulled one out for Bruce to sit in, then sat in his own. He reached over and immediately clasped the small man’s hand. He had to really play the part.
“Well, it’s not every day I get to talk to Avengers,” Valentina stated, smiling. “What brings you two here?”
“Um, well,” Bruce started. “Thor and I have been dating for a few months now, but we’ve been having problems sharing our living spaces. He’s still getting used to Earth concepts, and it can be very frustrating sometimes.”
“Can you give me an example?” Valentina asked, pulling out a pen and flipping to a new page in the notepad sitting on her desk.
“Well, he doesn’t know how to use most electronics, and he’s been on Earth for about a year now. It’s hard for me to contact him long-distance, which makes me worry. What if he was in trouble? What if he was cheating on me? I would never know! It makes me very paranoid!”
“I would never cheat on you, dear,” Thor said, squeezing Bruce’s hand.
“That’s what they all say!” Bruce exclaimed. Thor frowned. The scientist squeezed his hand under the desk, trying to remind him that this was all a ruse.
“Why are you worried about Thor cheating on you?” Valentina asked.
“I don’t know, I just feel like I’m not good enough for him. There are so many people who are hotter and thinner than me and who don’ t have anger issues.”
“I’m just curious,” Valentina started, leaning forward. “How is your sex life?”
“Nonexistent!” Thor replied, sounding a little annoyed.
The “therapist” raised her eyebrows. Bruce blushed as he heard giggles come through his earpiece.
“I’m demisexual,” Bruce explained. That part was true. “I do experience sexual attraction to people I’m emotionally connected to first, but I just haven’t felt anything around Thor yet.”
“How long did you say you were dating?” Valentina asked.
“A few months,” Bruce replied.
She turned to the god. “Thor, how does this make you feel?”
Thor frowned. He hated pretending to be mad at someone as sweet as Bruce. “Angry. And...sad. I’m a very physically affectionate person, and I feel trapped not being able to show him my love in that way. I just wish...things would hurry up.”
Valentina turned back to Bruce. “Have you been to a regular doctor about this?”
“About what?” Bruce asked.
“Your sexuality.”
“Why would I need to do that?”
Valentina leaned forward. “Not experiencing sexual attraction to a partner isn’t normal, Doctor Banner. You may need your hormones tested. There are many reasons for a low sex drive. Besides, how could you not be attracted to a man like him?” She gestured to Thor and smiled. He shifted uncomfortably. “I’ll write the referral to your primary care doctor myself.”
Bruce found himself actually getting angry. He had been told all of those things throughout his life, but it was still tough to hear them again. Nobody likes their identity being invalidated. “Excuse me, but if you paid attention to my title and my profile description, you’d know that I have a medical degree. I’m plenty capable of recognizing if I have a low sex drive or not--which I don’t!” He turned to Thor. “Honey, I think it’s time to leave.” He stood up and offered the god a hand. He noticed Valentina press a button on her desk phone out of the corner of his eye. He turned back around. “Invalidating and dismissing someone’s identity goes against the medical code of ethics. You could get your license taken away. I hope you know that. Good day.”
Bruce opened the door to be met by John Walker on the other side. He felt a stabbing pain in his thigh and looked down to see a syringe.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM!?” Thor yelled. He advanced on John, only to have Valentina sneak up behind him and stab him in the neck with an identical needle.
The two men sank to the floor, falling unconscious within moments.
Their plan was working.
~~~
“Open the back door,” Valentina instructed, dragging Bruce down the hallway with her hands under his arms. John opened the door leading to the back alley and helped the woman load Bruce into a white van. It took both of them to repeat the action with Thor.
The two hopped in the front seats and took off.
~~~
“They’re heading north in a white van,” Nat said into her comm from her perch beside Bucky on the roof.
“Classic,” Luis replied.
“How soon until it passes our street?” Scott asked.
“Thirty seconds,” Natasha replied. She and Bucky had slapped a tracker under the van as soon as Kurt had brought down the security cameras. John hadn’t noticed because he had coincidentally received a call at the same time about scheduling a therapy consultation from a certain man who really liked to talk.
“I have a visual from the air,” Sam declared. “Redwing is following them for now.”
“Okay, Scott, go!”
The sketchy vehicle passed by the alley they were nestled in. Ant-Man began his pursuit in the Ant-Van (Peter, who was in the back, wanted to call it the Spider-Van).
"This is so cool!" Peter gushed, looking out the window to see that they were underneath the kidnapping van.
"It never gets old," Luis replied.
"Hope, fly in and get more information," Nat instructed. Hope, who was in the back seat with Peter and Kurt, flew out the window and through a small crack in the van above them. She landed on top of a head rest and turned her comm on amplify mode for the rest of the Avengers to eavesdrop.
~~~
"Don't you think it's suspicious that two Avengers came to us? Are you not worried we're being followed?" John asked as he drove.
"Relax, Walker. Why would they let us capture them willingly?"
"Maybe to see where we're hiding everyone else?"
Valentina snorted. "Why would they care so much about a group of f*gs?"
"Maybe because a lot of them are gay?"
The woman took a deep breath. "We've been good about cleaning up after ourselves. How would they have gotten a tip to begin with? I mean, if they really want our victims, they can have them. I won't let them get to us. Just keep driving toward the estate."
John sighed. This was a crappy plan. "Whatever you say, Boss."
~~~~~~~
Everyone followed the van for an hour. They were out of the city by then and driving through forests and upstate countryside.
"Geez, their van must get good gas mileage," Scott muttered. "They're definitely dedicated to their homophobia, I'll give them that."
"Hopefully they'll stop at their 'estate' or whatever it is soon," Peter said. "I'm getting worried."
"It'll be okay, little buddy," Luis said. He reached behind him to pat Peter's arm.
Peter offered a half smile. "I sure hope so."
~~~
Since Thor was a god and Bruce had the Hulk, the effects of the tranquilizers wore off quicker than what their captors probably expected.
"Ugh, my neck," Thor groaned quietly, rubbing the tender muscle where he got stabbed by the needle. He reached over and shook Bruce. "Bruce, darling, are you awake?"
Bruce groaned. "Yeah. And you can stop pretending we're a couple for now.".
"Oh, right," Thor chuckled awkwardly. He had gotten a bit used to it. He looked around. The back half of the van was separated from the drivers, allowing them to talk quietly. “So what’s the plan now?”
The scientist tapped his earpiece. “Hey, Thor and I are awake.”
“Top of the mornin’ to ya,” Tony greeted.
“Where are we?”
“Right now you’re in a van headed through upstate New York,” Nat replied. “Hope snuck in and eavesdropped. They’re heading toward some kind of estate, presumably where the others are.”
“Is our plan still to fake being unconscious, then attack?” Thor asked.
“Yes,” she replied.
“Perfect.” He grinned. The van began to slow down.
“It looks like they’re pulling off of the main road and onto some kind of gravel paved one leading into the woods. Sam, fly ahead and see if this so-called estate is nearby.”
“Roger that,” Sam replied.
The vehicle hit a bump, throwing Thor and Bruce unexpectedly into one wall. The god landed on top of the smaller man. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to squish you.” He rolled off of him.
“It’s okay,” Bruce wheezed.
“Y’all have about three minutes,” Sam said into the comms. “Get ready.”
Thor and Bruce rolled away from each other, lying in uncomfortable positions to make it look like they were still unconscious. The van began to slow down. They listened to muffled voices on the other side of the van wall.
“Okay, but have you even thought about how we’re going to imprison them? They’re not your average gays,” Walker protested. “They’ll break out of here the first chance they get.”
“I’ll work something out. Maybe we’ll torture Bruce. That will surely keep Thor from running off.”
Thor’s skin tingled with electricity. Bruce reached out a hand to reassure him that that wouldn’t happen, but then retracted it when the van came to a stop. The two lied motionless, barely breathing. Both doors slammed, then footsteps approached the back of the vehicle. Bruce closed his eyes, and the back door opened. Valentina grabbed Bruce roughly by the ankles while John began to drag Thor.
“Now!” Scott yelled into their comms.
Thor lurched upward, kicking Walker in the jaw. Bruce twisted his body, breaking Valentina’s grip. He landed on his feet and took a swing at her, ignoring the rule about hitting a lady.
Scott’s van appeared behind them, growing to full size. He and Peter climbed out to join the fight. Hope climbed out of the passenger seat of the kidnapper van. Sam swooped in and landed on a balcony on the mansion behind them, breaking the glass of the locked doors and stepping inside.
The quinjet appeared from above the trees and landed in the yard. Out stepped Tony, Rhodey, Steve, Bucky, Nat, Wanda, Vision, and Stephen.
“Rhodey, Vision, Peter, Steve, and Bucky, you’re on the rescue team with me, “Tony instructed. “We’re going to meet Sam inside and help the victims onto the Quinjet. Luis and Kurt, you will stay in your van and hack into any potential security feed. Send it to F.R.I.D.A.Y. The feeds will display in my helmet. We don’t want to miss anybody. Everyone else is on the defense team.”
“We got this, go help Tony,” Scott told Peter. He nodded and ran toward the others. “Hope, get the jar!”
His girlfriend ran toward the van, catching the jar Luis threw out the window. “Now!” she yelled.
Scott grabbed a pair of thumb-sized disks from his belt and threw them at Valentina and John. They shrunk on impact. Hope slammed the jar down on top of them, then slid the lid underneath and flipped it over. Thor and Bruce stared at it, dumbfounded.
“Don’t worry, it has air holes,” Scott said, smiling. “We aren't that cruel.” He pressed his comm. “The homophobes have been taken care of. Do y’all need help?”
“Yes,” Sam replied. “There’s more people here than we thought. Everyone is scared. We need to try to coax everyone out as quickly but as gently as possible.”
Scott’s brow furrowed. “We took care of the captors. Don’t we have all day?”
An ear splitting scream rang through everyone’s comms.
Steve swore. “ Baron Zemo is here! Bucky is down!" The sound of a punch echoed through the line. “Your name is James Buchanan Barnes. You’re my frien--”
A gasp from a different person. “There are Widows here!” Natasha yelled.
“We need to get in there!” Scott exclaimed. He, Hope, Thor, and Bruce ran across the front drive and up the stairs. Luis climbed out of the van and grabbed the jar before anyone forgot about it.
The inside of the mansion was absolute chaos. What were assumed to be workers or servants were running around, confused about what was going on. Stephen and Wanda approached the group. “The victims are confused. Wanda and I looked into their minds, and somehow they’ve been hypnotized,” the wizard said grimly. “We think it’s a Hydra tactic since Zemo is here. Some kind of advanced conversion therapy. We’re going to try to use our magic to lull them into a sense of calm, but Thor, Bruce, we need you to talk to them as we try to get them onto the Quinjet. Just ramble about anything--science, Asgard--just long enough to keep them distracted. Scott, Hope, try to help fight the Widows and Zemo.”
The pair followed the magic users down a hallway where Sam and Rhodey were talking to people--a college-aged boy and a girl who looked to be as young as fifteen. They both nodded and went with them toward a nearby side door.
“Wanda, you and Bruce start in that room. I’ll take Thor with me.”
The Scarlet Witch nodded and led Bruce to the closest room, where a younger person sat on a bed. “What’s going on?”
“My name is Bruce Banner. I go by he/him. This is Wanda. We’re here to help you. What is your name?”
“Quin,” they replied, their eyes unfocused. “I go by xe/xem.”
"Hi Quin. We've come to relocate the people in this building. Do you want to get out of here?"
Xe shrugged, eyes unfocused.
"What has it been like here?"
Xe shrugged again. "I don't know. I don't remember much….I stay in my room most of the day. I haven't seen my girlfriend in...I don't remember."
"How did you get here?"
"I don't remember that, either.".
"Do you remember having a family?"
Quin nodded slightly. "I think so."
"Do you think they'll be worried?"
Xe shrugged.
Bruce knelt down to Quin's eye level. "I promise that we'll help you find your girlfriend. But first, we have to get you out of here. Do you understand?"
Xe nodded.
Wanda smiled and approached xem. "Do you know who I am?"
Quin smiled slightly. "You're the Scarlet Witch."
She smiled. "That's right. It's very chaotic beyond your room. Do you want some of my magic to help you feel calm?"
"Will it make me forget things, too?"
Wanda shook her head. "No. In fact, Doctor Strange and I can help you get back some of your memories."
"Okay. I'll accept your magic," xe said.
Wanda lightly pressed her fingers on Quin's temples. Xir face fell into a relaxed expression.
"Let me help you out to the jet," Bruce said, offering his arm. Xe took it, and he led xem down the hallway. He proceeded to ask Quin about xir age and hobbies. He managed to keep xem talking the entire walk over to the jet, where Sam was helping the people already there. The pair passed by Thor, who was telling his classic snake story about Loki to a girl with a captivated look on her face.
“Here, do you see Sam over there? The Falcon? He’ll help you get where you need to be. I have to go back and help the others. It was nice talking to you, Quin.”
Quin smiled. “Thank you, Doctor Banner.”
Bruce ran into Thor on his way out. They exchanged smiles. “I think that girl was pretty captivated by your snake story.”
The god’s grin widened. “You think so?”
Bruce nodded. Thor offered his arm, and together they walked back inside. Stephen met them at the door. “There’s a couple in here. You two and Wanda will talk to them. I need to temporarily put Bucky in the mirror dimension.” He stepped through a portal, leaving the two alone. Wanda found them within seconds. She led them to another room.
Two boys sat inside a room on a bed, talking quietly to each other, eyes wide. They looked up upon seeing the heroes enter.
“Are you here to purify us?” One of them asked.
The three exchanged a look. “No,” Bruce began. “We’re here to take you away from this place. The people who run it are not good people. We just want to help you. I’m Bruce, and this is Thor and Wanda.”
“I’m Luke,” the smaller boy with dark hair said.
“I’m Albert,” the other added, his hair the same color but curlier.
“Are you dating each other?” Thor asked curiously. Bruce elbowed him.
The boys exchanged glances. “We came in here as boyfriends,” Luke said. “But now we’re not so sure.”
“Why?” Bruce asked.
“The Baron told us we had a mental illness. That we need to be treated. He was sent to help us. He showed us pictures of women and told us to try to find our attraction to them from deep within us.”
Albert turned to the smaller boy, grabbing his shoulders. “I told you not to listen to him! He’s been feeding you lies!”
Thor nodded. “He has. Bruce and I are boyfriends. We’re not ashamed of our attraction. I wouldn’t want to date anyone else.” He slung his arm around the scientist, who blushed. Wanda gave them a confused look.
“Don’t worry, Baron Zemo, Valentina, and John have all been taken care of,” Bruce assured. “We’re here to help you get away from this place.”
“If you want, I can use my magic to help the two of you relax,” Wanda offered.
Luke nodded, but Albert narrowed his eyes. “How do we know you won’t do the exact same thing the Baron did?”
“You don’t have to accept my offer if you don’t want to. But, we are asking you to come with us to a safer place. We can help get you back to your friends and family.”
The couple looked at each other for a moment, then nodded. Thor led them out to the Quinjet while Bruce and Wanda tended to other patients.
~~~~~~~~~~
By the time they had finished, the Avengers had rescued around thirty victims from the mansion. Steve and Sam were able to calm Bucky down, and he was able to leave the mirror dimension. Valentina and John had to make room in the jar for Zemo. The local police were called for further investigation of the property. Vision, Rhodey, and Scott kept the employees in one spot until law enforcement arrived to interrogate them.
~~~~~~~~
Bruce finished washing his face, then walked into his room and sprawled out on his bed, exhausted after the long day of heroing. He was glad he hadn’t turned into Hulk--that could’ve made the situation worse.
There was a knock on his door. He groaned quietly, not wanting to get up. “Come in,” he said.
Thor opened the door and stepped inside. “Are you tired as well?”
“You don’t even know,” Bruce replied, chuckling.
“Well, at least the van ride gave us an extra hour of sleep.”
Bruce grinned. It had probably done more harm than good.
“May I lay beside you?”
The scientist nodded and moved over a little to make room for the significantly larger man.
“I wanted to tell you something,” Thor said after staring at the ceiling for a bit.
“I’m all ears,” Bruce replied.
The god began twiddling his thumbs. “I'm sorry for the stuff I said to you in therapy. You're a really awesome person. Your demiseuxality isn't a disorder."
Bruce smiled. "You don't have to apologize for anything. That was pretend."
"A-And even if you did have a low sex drive, I wouldn't mind?"
The scientist furrowed his eyebrows. "What?"
Thor's eyes widened as he blushed. "No! I jumped ahead of myself!"
"Jumped ahead? I think I need an explanation."
"Well...I really liked pretending we were a couple, you know, for justice, and I was wondering if....if we didn’t have to pretend.” He began blushing.
Bruce smiled. “Are you asking me out on a date, Thor?” He asked in a teasing tone.
He turned redder. “Maybe…”
“Well...I guess we don't have to pretend to like each other anymore," Bruce replied.
Thor couldn't wipe the grin off his face as they pulled each other forward in a hug.
