9. If I Had Words
Word Count: 750
Thor woke to a muffled growling coming from down the hall. He rolled over and checked the time. 3:28.
Sighing, he crawled out of bed, hissing as his feet touched the chilly floor. He slowly opened his door, peering out into the hallway before creeping to Bruce's room diagonal from his.
"Bruce," he whispered, tapping on the door. "Are you awake?"
"No Banner, only Hulk," came a growl from inside.
"May I come in, Hulk?"
A grunt in response. Thor decided to test his luck and twisted the knob. Hulk sat on the bed, illuminated by the moonlight streaming through the glass balcony doors.
"Hey big guy," Thor murmured, closing the door behind him. "What brings you here at this hour?"
"Dumb scientist had a dream about puny god dying. Dumb scientist got scared," Hulk replied, crossing his arms.
"I see," he replied, carefully sitting beside him. "Maybe Bruce thought you could deal with the dream better?"
Hulk huffed in response.
Thor placed a hand on Hulk's. "Bruce doesn't have to worry about me dying. I'm not going anywhere."
"Friend stay?" Hulk asked.
"Friend stay," he replied, nodding.
The god grunted in surprise as he was picked up and cradled against Hulk's chest. "Hulk was worried. Hulk and Banner."
"Neither of you have to worry about a thing," Thor reassured him, patting his arm. "Would you or Bruce like to talk about the dream, though?"
"Mmm...Banner can."
"Okay. Goodnight, Hulk," Thor replied, kissing him on the cheek.
Hulk grunted and put the god down, then began to shift until Bruce was sitting beside Thor. He jumped and pulled his sheet over himself, panting. "Thor? Oh gosh, I'm sorry if Hulk woke you up."
"It's okay, Bruce. We had a nice chat. Here, I'll get you a change of clothes." He stood up and opened a dresser drawer, digging around until he found a shirt, shorts, and boxers. He brought them over to his boyfriend, then turned around to give him some privacy.
"Thanks," he murmured. There was rustling as he pulled the clothing on. "You can turn around now."
"So, I heard you had a nightmare. Do you want to tell me about it?"
Bruce began to shake, wrapping the sheet around him. Thor came over and sat beside him.
"Do you want to lay down? I could hug you. And you don't have to tell me."
Bruce nodded and his partner helped him lay back, then walked around to climb in from the other side of the bed. He brought the blankets to their chins, then turned on his side and wrapped his arms around the smaller man. His trembling began to cease as the god ran fingers through his curls and hugged him close.
"I-It was the arena fight on Sakaar," Bruce began after a few minutes. "B-But the Hulk killed you." He choked back a sob.
Thor hugged him tighter and kissed his cheek. "That does sound very frightening. I'm sorry you went through that."
"Thank you," he whispered, rolling over to bury his face in his boyfriend's chest. Both hands grabbed fistfuls of Thor's shirt, trying to take in as much of his scent as he could.
"Is there anything I could do to help you, dear?" Thor murmured.
"Stay," Bruce mumbled against his chest.
Thor nodded, continuing to stroke his hair. He leaned down to kiss his forehead. The scientist sighed against his chest, beginning to relax.
The god remembered when he'd sometimes get scared and come to his mother. She would usually sing a lullaby to him. He couldn't recall any specifics at that moment, but he did remember a cute song from a movie he had watched with Peter.
"If I had words...to make a day for you," Thor sang just loud enough to carry a tune. "I'd sing you a morning golden and true."
"I would make this day last for all time
Then fill the night deep in moon shine."
Bruce smiled into his partner's chest as he repeated the short tune, growing quieter each time. Thor's voice was rough around the edges, but pleasant. His eyelids drooped and his breaths deepened as he listened to the song vibrating in the larger man's chest.
Thor stopped when he heard faint snores. He chuckled, then closed his eyes as well, matching his breaths with Bruce's. He pressed one last kiss to the scientist's forehead, his lips lingering on soft skin as he fell asleep.
Hello! I'm sorry this chapter is a little shorter this week. I actually didn't plan on writing it, but I feel like I needed a filler chapter in order for the transition to next one not to feel as chaotic. Lol. The next chapter will also be a lot longer.
Thank you to everyone that's reading this! It means the world to me! <3
Also, any guesses to what movie the song is from? ;)
