Forbidden Friendship

"Whoa!" Kiara gasped, her deep brown eyes scanning the barren land past the border. "The Outlands!"

The wonder and excitement in the princess's eyes were unmatched to any other amazement you've ever seen. Her eyes were as big as saucers and her jaw was hanging open as she simply stood and gaped at the land before her.

For little Kiara, the Outlands was like a myth or a great fairytale, for she'd never before seen the endless dusty terrain or the dangerous creatures that supposedly lurked among the dead trees, but rather only heard of these things in her parents' stories and warnings.

Her golden paw quaked with anticipation as she lifted it and dangled it over the border's edge. With a deep breath and a brave smile, Kiara let her paws lead her over the borderline and into the desolate wasteland of the foreign and possibly dangerous Outlands.

Kiara's light bouncy paw steps led her down a little hill and past a stack of large gray rock. But little did the princess know, another little cub was watching her from behind those boulders.

The little keen-eyed and pounce ready cub stayed low behind her cover, watching Kiara with narrowed eyes and extended claws. But oddly, this attack ready cub stayed still and silent, not revealing her presence but not jumping the princess either.

Kiara took a breath and spun in a circle, saying to herself, "The Outlands isn't so bad. Mom and dad were just being silly. I haven't seen another creature since I came here. There's nothing they should get so worked up about!"

She let a smile cross her face as she lifted her eyes to the bright blue sky. The little Outsider cub decided this was her chance. She wriggled her haunches and readied to leap forward.

The small cub used all of her force and sprung forward, lifting her paws and taking the princess by complete surprise. With a fierceness no Pridelander had ever before seen, the cub turned startled Kiara onto her back. She let out a horrible growl that frightened Kiara to death.

"Who are you, trespasser?" the cub demanded.

Kiara's wide brown eyes went frantically from the cub's left eye to her right eye, not even noticing their vibrant violet hue. The princess's chest rose up and down, and she gulped hard before asking, "You don't know me?"

The angry look in the cub's eyes made Kiara shudder.

"You think my cruel demand and my searching eyes would've answered that for you." The cub paired her sarcastic remark with a single eyebrow raise.

But Kiara didn't let this deter her.

"I'm Princess Kiara of the Pridelands, and you should let me go before my parents her here or they'll pound you!" she ended with a nod.

"The wimp is getting brave," the cub said, rolling her eyes at the threat.

The slim but strong cub stepped off the princess. Kiara dusted herself off and began to give herself a bathing. But her brown eyes spotted the pale cub trotting off leisurely and she jumped up and began to follow the sarcastic cub. She wasn't sure why, but Kiara felt like this cub would be a lot of fun to hang around.

"Wait up!" she called as she trotted towards the outsider. "What's your name?"

The cub rolled her eyes again and sighed.

"Don't you have to be stupid somewhere else?" she growled, but then she answered, "I'm Vitani."

"Nice to meet you Vitani!" Kiara grinned from ear to ear. "So where are we going?"

Vianti opened her mouth to tell the cub to bug off, but then she clamped it shut.

Maybe this is my chance, the outsider thought This kid is so gullible, I bet I could pull it off.

Vitani stopped in her tracks. She watched Kiara's eyes grow wide and she saw the glimmer of excitement. This would be too easy.

"I have an idea," Vitani said. "But don't come along if you're not up for the risk."

"Oh, I am!" Kiara called. "I so am!"

"Good, follow me."

Vitani led her past the border of the Outlands and Pridelands, into the kingdom and right to a large gathering of ostriches.

"What are we doing?" Kiara asked. "The ostriches are no fun. Their just dumb birds."

"Do you trust me?" Vitani asked.

"No,"

"Smart girl," Vitani said. "But you can just this one time, okay?"

"Okay," Kiara replied hesitantly.

The cubs got down low and crawled closer to the large birds. They stayed low and silent for about five minutes, and Kiara was getting restless.

"So is there a plan or something?" the princess whispered irritatedly.

"Yeah, I have a plan."

"It better be good,"

"I have a plan," Vitani repeated less certainly this time.

Kiara rolled her eyes and sighed. This wasn't fun,  it was super boring. She should've known.

"Okay now!" Vitani exclaimed. "Follow my lead!"

And then Kiara watched dumbly as Vitani lept out of the grasses and yelled at the top of her lungs, screaming and jumping around like a crazy cat. Kiara gained back her mind and followed her new friend with even more vigor than she's ever had before, all the while they both had grins spread wide.

Chaos erupted, feathers flew, and squawks sounded. All the sudden Kiara spotted Vitani motioning to her from the outside of the crying birds. Her face was happy but urgent. Kiara sprinted off towards her Outsider friend and the two of them made a break for the Outlands border.

After they were back in the Outlands and had finally caught their breath, Kiara called, "You're insane!"

"I know, isn't it great?" Vitani smiled.

"Totally is," Kiara replied, her eyes dancing with joy. "That was awesome. Why'd we do that though?"

But before Vitani could reply, a loud roar sounded. A large lioness lept from the grasses and with one graceful move, took a defensive pose in front of Kiara.

"Mom?" Kiara asked, her face confused.

Her mother ignored her and instead growled forcefully to the other cub, "Get out of here, outsider!"

Vitani's sass drained and her expression turned to dread. Her eyes went wide in terror and her ears dropped in fear. But another slim lioness, much more gangly then Nala, emerged from the shadows of the Outlands.

"You're the one trespassing, Nala," Zira's gravely voice assured calmly as she went to stand next to her daughter.

Nala simply barred her teeth with a great show of anger. Zira didn't waver but kept her stare on Kiara's mother.

"Temper, temper, dear queen." the lioness said to Nala. Then she turned to leave. "Come Vitani, let's go home."

Vitani gulped hard and met eyes with Kiara.

"Bye," Kiara mouthed.

Vitani simply nodded and gave a quick glance at Nala, who was still looking terrifying.

"Vitani!" Zira demanded harshly.

With that Vitani scampered off.

Later that night, Vitani relayed the whole story to her brothers, Kovu and Nuka.

"Well, what'd you expect to achieve? You trespassed and in cahoots with a Pridelander no less!" Nuka scoffed.

"I suppose you're right, for once," Vitani replied grimly, her ears drooping.

"Cheer up, sis! I'm sure there's a way we can make it up to mother." Kovu encouraged her.

"Thanks, Kovu," she smiled.

Special thanks to shadowsassychance999 for the idea for this one shot. This will have 3-4 parts to show a bit more of the story because it was such a good idea it needs more story. I suppose it's more of a short story than a one-shot now, but hey, great ideas need plenty of words, right?

Make sure to comment your ideas on my "Suggestions needed" chapter!! I still need more!!
