Chapter 3: Blood in the Water

This was a bit inspired from an art piece by Genocide-Knight

Beshte turned to Kion, confused. "Kion, why'd you scare him like that?" the hippo asked.

"Beshte, we can't stop every time you see a new animal," Kion snapped.

"I was just being nice," Beshte said.

"That's the problem!" Kion growled. "You're slowing us down! Stop being nice!"

Beshte flinched. "Stop being nice?" he echoed nervously. "I...I don't know how to do that."

"Kion, have some Tuliza? It'll help you feel better," Makini suggested, grabbing a handful of some Tuliza from the gourd and handing it over to Kion.

Kion stared angrily at the purple flowers in Makini's hand, at this point, he was tired of eating, hearing, or seeing Tuliza. "Forget it, Makini!" he snapped, angrily swatting the flowers away from the mandril's hand, causing her to tremble. "The Tuliza's not working anymore!" And it tastes worse than hyena-food!

"Evil..." Bunga whispered menacingly.

"Kion!" Fuli shouted, stepping up to confront her angry friend. "You're out of control!"

Kion whipped his head and glared at the cheetah. "Am I? All I want to do is get to the Tree of Life so I can get better! But, everyone keeps slowing me down!"

"We're not trying to slow you down, we're trying to help you get there," Fuli said.

"Feels like I'm dragging you along," Kion scoffed, rolling his eyes, growing more impatient with the group as a whole. Hurt flashed through Fuli as she flinched at Kion's harshness.

"Kion, your scar hurts, so you're not thinking straight," she explained softly. "That's why you were mean to Beshte."

"I'm not being mean," Kion protested sharply.

"You kinda are..." Bunga whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear, giving a awkward smile afterwards. A growl escaped from Kion's throat and he glared at the honey badger, who took a nervous step back in response.

"Kion," Fuli started, moving swiftly in front of Bunga, bringing herself to the lion's attention. "Maybe this is one of those times where I should take over-"

"Take over!?" Kion echoed in disbelief.

"Until you feel better!" Fuli added quickly, her ears flattened nervously.

Is she saying I'm not capable of leading!? How DARE she challenge me! "I'm the leader of the Guard, Fuli!" Kion snarled at her. "And I don't think so!" He said, hunching down and letting out a growl, as if preparing to attack.

Fuli stared at Kion in disbelief. Her heart and mind began racing as she wondered on how to react to Kion's action. He's seriously not gonna pull something like this, would he? It's all just a show, right? Still... "Don't do this Kion." Fuli warned, getting into a stance of her own. I can't risk to take any chances. Especially now with his current state...

The Guard was frozen in shock. Were they about to fight? No, that's impossible! Kion and Fuli are friends, they'd never! Would they...?

"...Hey, guys? Let's all just, calm down now, alright? Remember what Makini said, 'shwari," Beshte suggested calmly, stepping between Kion and Fuli. "Shwari, Kion. My dad always says, 'When you let anger get the best of you, it brings out the worst in you.' Kion, calm down. You don't need to-"

"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" Kion snarled at Beshte and he roughly batted his muzzle. Beshte yelped and he quickly backed away. Fuli sprung between Kion and the Guard, hissing defensively.

"A-are... are they going to fight?" Makini gasped.

"Looks like it," Anga replied with a frown.

"I'm glad I can't watch," Ono said, tightening his grip on Beshte's back.

"But, Kion wouldn't fight Fuli," Beshte said. "...Would he?"

"Of course he would!" Bunga interrupted. "This is exactly what I've been talking about!" Kion and Fuli faced each other, glaring.

"Wait!" Makini squealed, running in between the two. "Kion, shwari! Shwari!"

The mandril repeated the word slowly, though, not sounding too calm herself. The word was also now starting to get on Kion's nerves just as much as "Tuliza." The more Makini repeated it, the more annoyed and dangerous he grew.

"We can talk about this!" Makini insisted.

"This doesn't involve you, Makini, SO SCREW OFF!" Kion roared, pushing back the mandril a little too hard, knocking her harshly to the ground. So hard that it even caused the Tuliza to spill out from the gourd.

"Makini!" the Guard cried in a unsion, they all going over to her and Bunga quickly helped her back up to her feet. They stared, shocked at Kion, as the leader glared at them, not even seeming to show the slightest sign of remorse on his face.

Once the group made sure that Makini was fine, Fuli stepped in to voice her thoughts, once again, thrusting her muzzle towards Kion.

"Kion! Control yourself!" she pleaded.

"What!? She was getting in my way!" he growled back.

"You didn't need to push her!" Fuli scolded. "You could've-"

"COULD'VE WHAT!?" Kion shouted back. Fuli backed away but Kion inched closer to her, his claws slid out. "Didn't you forget? I'm the leader, Fuli! I get to make the decisions around here! AND YOU DON'T!"

Kion roared, his paw lashed out at Fuli. She let out a scream of surprise and pain as she felt his claws rake against her right cheek. As the cheetah staggered backward, Kion lunged at her, knocking her to the ground, catching her by surprise. The rest of the Guard gasped, eyes wide with horror as they witnessed Fuli scream again when Kion slashed her throat. She scratched and kicked with all her might, but Kion didn't budge as he raised his paw again for another blow.

"Fuli!" Makini cried.

"Hapana! What's happening?!?" Ono panicked, he sniffed and flapped his ruffled feathers. "IS THAT BLOOD I'M SMELLING!?"

"Kion! No! Stop!" Makini demanded, rushing forward and grabbing Kion's arm, attempting to pull him away from Fuli, but the lion shoved her away. Fuli then kicked Kion off and quickly scrabbled to her paws, Kion skidded across the ground but then quickly got up again. The two cats growled at each other as they began to circle one another, both of their eyes were narrowed to slits.

"Kion! Stand down!" Fuli ordered, her voice more desperate than angry. Blood continued to trickle down her scratch, creating tiny puddles when it hit the ground.

"You're the one who should stand down, Fuli!" Kion spat. "I'm the leader, not you! You don't tell me what to do!"

Fuli sighed, lowering her head. "Kion please. I don't want to fight you!"

"THEN DON'T FIGHT!" Kion roared. He then abruptly sprang at Fuli, his claws unsheathed. Fuli quickly leapt out of the way and Kion skidded across the ground. The cheetah used this to her advantage and she pinned Kion down, her claws unsheathed.

"Let go of me!" Kion snarled, blood was now trickling down his nose.

"Kion, you have to stop!" Fuli said. "This isn't you!"

"I SAID LET GO!" Kion pulled a paw free and slashed Fuli's muzzle.

Fuli yelped and her grasp on Kion loosened. Kion then knocked Fuli backwards and the two felines rolled down a hill. The Guard rushed over to where they last saw them and they soon found them by a stream. While Kion was struggling to get up, Fuli lunged at him and raked her claws at the side of his belly. Kion hissed with pain and guilt swept over Fuli. I don't want to do this! Kion, snap out of this, please! I don't want to hurt you!

She then swiftly shifted to the side and reared up, then brought her claws down onto Kion's back and scored them across. While Kion hissed again, she clawed alongside his flank, right across one of the previous blow she had given him. Kion winced as the cuts now began to sting twice as before. Then Fuli rammed against him, shoving him back a few feet.

Kion then turned around and sank his fangs into Fuli's arm, the cheetah shrieked and clawed Kion's face with her free arm. The lion growled and let go of Fuli's arm, Fuli then lunged at him again and she dug her claws into his back as she bit his neck. The lion roared with pain and collapsed to he ground. Once he hit the ground, Fuli quickly let go of Kion. She stared at the lion's body with labored breathing, horror and guilt squirmed inside of her. Kion laid on the ground, his eyes closed. Did... Did I kill him...?

Suddenly, Kion's eyes snapped open and he let out a furious roar as he lunged at Fuli again. The two tumbled towards the stream and Kion shoved Fuli into it. The cheetah coughed as she tried to stand, but then Kion pushed her head back into the stream, pinning her with one paw. Fuli shrieked as she felt his claws dig into her throat, blood and bubbles began to blur her vision. She tried raising her head but Kion quickly shoved it back down. She tried kicking, punching, and scratching him, but it was no use. He's too strong...!

Suddenly, she was a young cub again, near the border of the Pride Lands. She saw her brother, Beba, and her father, Hatari, tumbling down the slope and plunging into the river below. Both father and son had been killed in the water. Now it looks like it's my turn...

Fuli felt herself growing weaker and weaker, her attacks began to slack. Finally, Fuli stopped, giving herself into the darkness.
