"remember
that one time in grade school? among the times of laughter, shrewd comments, annoyance, sadness. remember a time that was as temporary as a puff of smoke? a time that has escaped from your mind eons ago."

"remember
that one time in fourth grade? when our hands touched for the first time? we would wager about high test scores that would be meaningless in the years ahead. i remember the way our hands collided into a firm handshake, sealing the phrases off. we smiled at each other jokingly."

"remember
that one time after lunch? when i had lost the
bet we made and i didn't show with the five dollars for three days. i had a box of cookies perched in the clear tuperware with the red lid. i remember you approaching me and the cookie box, asking sweetly if you could have one, and mentioning the five dollars that i owed you."

"remember
in fifth grade? when we used message each other during class. i remember telling you to cut it out because i was afraid of the teacher noticing. i remember us texting on a weekend, and i remember you talking about how you were the youngest in your family. you said that you were usually the one who annoyed everyone, but on the contrary, i never minded your company."

The brunette's hair is pulled back, but pesky strands have fallen out of the updo, shielding her vision yet again. She groans in frustration, for her delicate fingers—covered in charcoal from touching burnt candle wicks—didn't speed across keyboards as they used to. Her courage is gone, and she can't even muster the right words that could rekindle whatever it was that she and him even had.
They just don't talk anymore. And she will never know why.
