Chapter 10:
"What on Earth are ye kids doin here? We told you to stay home!" Scrooge exclaimed, picking up his cane and supporting them behind the shield protecting them from the continuous shooting lasers.
"Since when do we ever listen?" Dewey smirked, slightly being pushed back by every moon lander that had joined in with their leader, Lunaris.
"Kids! You shouldn't be here, it's dangerous!" Della warned, holding Louie's back for support against the shield which was lowering by the second.
"You're our mom! We weren't just going to leave you!" Huey said with a smile plastered on his face, not just a smile of reassurance but a smile of relief that his mother was okay.
"Kids what is the one rule I taught you?" Donald asked with one eyebrow raised, joining in with his family and supporting the kids.
"Don't eat with your mouth open?" Louie asked.
"No!" Donald slapped a hand to his face.
"Don't go out late at night?" Dewey asked.
"No!" Donald rolled his eyes, his agitation growing.
"Don't read without a light?" Huey asked.
"No!" Donald squawked, jumping up and almost being shot before Della pulled him back down.
"Don't follow your Uncle Scrooge!" He said, furrowing his eyebrows.
Realisation finally hit the kids. "Ohhhh."
"Well we weren't just going to let you guys go alone, you needed our help!" Huey persuaded them not to get mad at the kids for only wanting to help. "If we didn't show up then you guys would've never returned to Earth and we would never even have an uncle to look up to."
Donald smiled softly with Huey's words touching his heart. The boys really had looked up to him all these years.
The entire time Webby stayed quiet, she was only there to help, a sidekick, per say. What they were talking about was between them. Donald and Scrooge weren't her uncle and Della wasn't her mom.
After minutes of Lunaris' impatient waiting, the shield gave in, leaving McDuck family vulnerable for attack.
"Hold your fire!" Lunaris held one hand up and just as he did, all moonlanders seized fire, waiting patiently for their next order.
"What do you want? Just let us go!" Louie yelled, trying his best to defend the family that had always defended him.
"What do I want? My father spent years fearing this unknown planet that had appeared before him. He spent years fearing what this Earth held. Well no more! I'm not going to spend my life fearing you ducks! I will take you down and the planet moon will be fearless once again!" Lunaris claimed, raising his clenched fist in the air. His intense face showed no mercy, he wasn't going to stop until he got what he wanted.
"Ummm the moon isn't a planet." Huey stated, raising one finger.
"Silence!" Lunaris yelled with his fists clenched so tightly they began to turn white, it was clear he had had enough of these ducks. He wasn't going to take it anymore.
Lunaris held his gun at the ready, aiming it at the McDuck family. "Say your goodbyes McDucks."
Scrooge, Donald and Della held the kids close to them so if this were to really happen, they would be the ones to take the fall. They held them close to their heart as the kids squinted their eyes and held their ear to the adults chest, wanting to hear their heartbeat for what they thought was going to be the last time.
With every last bit of their strength, they squeezed the kids close to them and huddled together, tightly squinting their eyes for whatever fate were to come.
Lunaris smirked. "Pathetic." With one last chuckle, he finally pulled the trigger.
"NO!" Out of nowhere, a strange moonlander jumped in front of the McDucks holding a battle shield before her.
"Penumbra?!" Della and Lunaris yelled at once, eyes widening in shock.
Penny had never been the one to stick with the annoying Earth girl, in fact, she despised her and felt envy for taking the centre of attention away from her.
"Stay away from my best friend!" Penny yelled, gritting her teeth and holding her spear in front of her, ready for battle.
Webby's eyes widened as her breathe hitched in her throat. The last time she heard someone yell that was when her best friend ...... her only friend fought for her against Magica, the women who had tortured Lena her entire life. It was a sad day and a day Webby would never forget, every word, every breathe and every movement that was taken replayed in her mind like a record player. She knew she would remember what happened that day for the rest of her life and she was unsure if the pain of having to say goodbye would ever leave her.
Remembering what happened after that sentence was said, Webby was skeptical as to what would happen to Della's new found friend Penumbra.
"Penumbra be careful!" Webby yelled with her pupils tiny and her eyes wide. She yelled this as if a friend were to fall down a deep dark hole that one would never be able to get back up from. She yelled this as if she had known Penumbra all her life, as if Penumbra were her one and only friend, someone you could trust, someone who would protect you under any circumstances, someone that would never leave your side, someone like ...... Lena.
The McDucks looked at Webby in a strange way.
With one eyebrow raised Della questioned the unfamiliar girl. "I'm sorry, you know Penny?"
"No I-I just ... she has to be careful, that's all." Webby shook her head, trying to brush off the situation and the fact she had mistaken Penumbra for her fallen friend, Lena.
"GO!" Penumbra yelled. "There's a ship not too far away, keep running behind you and you'll see it!" It was the shadow war all over again, Penumbra was going to save the McDuck family's life and then ... be erased from existence. Just as Lena did.
"Penny I'm not leaving you!" Della yelled with Donald and Scrooge already ushering the kids towards the ship.
"You have to! Take the ship! I'll take care of Lunaris! I promise I'll be fine, just go!" Penumbra yelled, running at Lunaris with her spear and shield, pushing him to the ground.
"Della we have to go!" Donald lightly grabbed her arm, pulling her towards where the kids and Scrooge were headed, pulling her towards safety, he wasn't going to lose her a second time.
With tears forming in her eyes she squinted her eyes and made a decision she never thought she would have to make. She left one of her best friends behind and followed Donald, running towards their escape, running towards safety.
It felt selfish for Della, leaving someone behind to save herself. Even if this someone wasn't any ordinary someone, this someone was Della's best friend, the one who had just saved her and her family's life.
Della always swore to herself she would never leave anyone behind and yet there she was, breaking her own promise, letting down not just herself, but possibly even her friend, her best friend.
'She'll be okay. She's going to be okay.' Della continued to repeat those words in her mind, not knowing if they were true or if they would help, but knowing that all she could do at that moment was pray and hope that her best friend would be okay.
Finally, the McDuck family made it to the ship and tiredly crawled up the ladder to the entrance.
Puffing and out of breathe, the kids fell to the ground, thinking that they were safe and that everything would be okay now that they were finally at the ship.
However, Webby couldn't stop thinking about what that strange lady, Penumbra, had yelled out earlier. It had brought back am unfortunate event to Webby's mind that had replayed in her head the whole way to the ship.
'Stay away from my best friend, Aunt Magica!'
Though, the sentence Penny yelled lacked two words, it was the words 'best friend' that caught her off guard most. Webby used to have a best friend, then she left and Webby feared there was no getting her back.
In the background, Donald, Scrooge and Della panicked for Penumbra and themselves, the ship wasn't exactly the best looking ship, it was old and rusty, it must've been something Lunaris had tested long ago because it was banged up and Della wasn't sure if she could get it moving again.
"Can ye fix it, lass?" Scrooge asked, calmly.
Della was panicking and doing everything she could to turn the ship back on, to make it work so she could finally return home and hopefully forget about what had happened to her. She didn't want to worry about her dear best friend Penumbra, the one who had saved her life.
"I-I'm trying!" She stuttered, pressing buttons and pulling levers.
Della slammed her hands down. "Come on! Work!" She yelled, chest moving faster and faster as her heart picked up to a rapid pace.
"Calm down lass, just be patient." Scrooge instructed.
"I am being patient but the stupid thing won't work!" She yelled, throwing her arms in the air and kicking the panel. "Ow!" She yelled furiously, grabbing her foot and hopping up and down.
"Give it some time, Della, and keep trying." Scrooge kept his cool, placing a comforting hand on Dellas shoulder.
"I am giving it time, Uncle Scrooge!" She yelled, fire burning in her eyes as tears sprung from her face. "But every second I wait here, every second I 'be patient' is another second I lose a friend! Every second that goes by Penny could be out there suffering!" Her chest puffed up and down as tears slowly rolled down her face. Her eyes focused unsteadily on Scrooge, one side of her wanting him to say something, wanting him to comfort her and tell her everything would be okay, just like he did when they were kids. However, the other side of her kept reminding her of the mistake she had made, breaking a promise she swore to herself she would never break. That part of her wanted to run back to Penny, even if it meant risking her own life.
"Every hour, every minute and every second that goes by is an hour, a minute, a second I could've fought, I could've helped her! I've fought for ten years on the moon, Scrooge! Ten years! And I can't even stay behind one minute for Penny!" She yelled, letting her emotion take the best of her.
"Della..." Donald took a step forward, reaching an arm towards his sister.
"No, Donald! Don't! Don't try and say it's not worth it! Don't try and say to forget it! Don't try and say I'm wro~"
"You're right." Donald smiled softly, putting a soft hand on her shoulder.
Della spoke no words, she did, however, look up at her slightly older twin brother. "I can't just leave her." She spoke with a raspy voice, wiping another tear from her eye.
"I know how it feels, Della. When you left, I had to get you back. Did you really think I'd just leave you without searching for myself? I tried, I really did try my hardest to get you back. I got the best scientist in the world to help me, Della! Just to at least try and get you back! But it didn't work, you were still lost and so was I." Donald looked away, tears forming in his eyes.
Della couldn't believe what she was hearing, Donald tried to get her back? She would've thought after all the years of torment and pain she gave him that he would just leave her. "Donald I ... I didn't know ... I'm so~"
"No no ...... don't say sorry, you were just following your dream." He smiled softly down at his twin sister. "I can't agree it was at the right time, though." He chuckled, gaining a small laugh from Della as well.
"I spent years trying to get you back, Della, and so did Scrooge. You're Della duck for crying out loud! We knew you were alive! We knew you would never give up that easily. Especially considering you had kids. I knew you were out there and I tried for those ten years to get you back, whilst also balancing work and taking care of the kids." He looked away, his smile fading. "I'm not gonna lie, Della, it really hurt what you did, but nonetheless I know you didn't mean it." He looked back at his sister, with the same soft smile he had showed just a second ago. "You know, I sang your song to the boys every night. They loved it and, let's just say, Scrooge and I weren't the only ones who missed your nuisance not being around." He chuckled and so did Della.
"Donald, I'm so sorry for leaving, I really didn't want to do that to you or the boys I just ..." Della paused. "I really am sorry." She looked up at Donald with a smile he had never seen before, one that showed how truely sorry she was, one that seemed to other that it said no words, but to Donald, it said a thousand.
Donald quickly embraced Della in a hug, a forgiving, relieved, happy, warm hug. "I forgive you." He whispered.
Della hesitated for just a second, before hugging her twin back and crying on his shoulder for what seemed like the first time.
After a moment of silence, the twins finally broke the hug.
Donald, giving a relieved sigh, finally spoke once again. "What I'm trying to say is, Penny will be ok, she's a strong warrior, just like you. You didn't give up and neither will she. She'll be ok, Della." He kept his hand on her shoulder. "She'll be okay." He reassured her.
Della sighed and looked down for just a moment, remembering all the times Penny had defended, not just herself but her friends, her family and her people against the worst of monsters. "You're right." She smiled. "I never thought I'd say it, but you're right." She chuckled. "Now let's get this ship in the air, shall we?" She raised and eyebrow as a big smile plastered across her face.
"That a girl!" Scrooge held his cane in the air, a proud look on his face.
Della and Donald looked at the old man, remembering he had been there the entire time, they both gave a small laugh.
"Don't get used to it because once we're back on Earth, I'll be teaching this guy how to actually build a ship." She chuckled, pointing to Donald.
"Hey!" Donald laughed. "I can build a ship!"
"Yeah yeah whatever you say." Della chuckled. "Anyway let's get this ship in the air!" Just a second ago Della had tears in her eyes, tears of sorrow, tears of regret and tears of feeling powerless but now, she had a determined look on her face. One that said, 'I'm not giving up!' She had faith in herself, she had faith in her family and most of all, she had faith in Penumbra.
Della laid down underneath the control panel and began looking at the wire system that controlled everything.
"Finally, I'm sick of these kids ramblin' on about who ran faster and who does more running than the other." Scrooge rolled his eyes, stepping forward and earning a small laugh from the twins.
"Hey!" The triplets yelled. "I'll have you know, this conversation is very important." Dewey claimed, furrowing his eyebrows and putting his hands to his hips, gaining a playful eye roll from all three adults.
Webby sat in the corner, silently looking out the window at the moon surface below, her mind was flooded with emotions, she didn't know what to feel. Happy for her friends, Donald and for Uncle Scroo-......for Scrooge that they had finally got Della back, however, she was also flooded with a wave of sorrow as she wondered, not only about Lena, but also about her mom and dad, a subject that had only just popped in her mind again while she listened to Donald talking about how he took care of the triplets all his life.
She wondered about her parents from time to time. Were they alive? We're they okay? Did they even want her?
Unlike the triplets, Webby knew nothing about her parents, she constantly asked her granny but never got the answer she wanted. It was always 'there not here anymore' or 'they can't be with you, I'm sorry Webby' and although her granny said she was sorry, Webby always knew she wasn't as sorry as she said she was.
A familiar voice interrupted Webby's thoughts. "Hey Webs ... you ok?" Dewey asked, sitting next to her.
"Huh? Oh y-yeah I'm fine." Webby chuckled nervously and looked back out the window.
"Ok ...... and hey what was that back there?" Dewey questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?" Webby asked, turning her attention back to Dewey.
"I mean, you acted kinda weird, sort of like you knew Penumbra, which, is impossible because you've never been to the moon. Wait ...... have you? What, and you went without me?" Dewey puffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Rude." He furrowed his eyebrows.
"What? No, Dewey, of course not!" She laughed. "You know you're the only one I'd go to the moon with." Webby reassured, whilst also feeling a weird warm feeling to her cheeks as she said those words. It was almost as though Webby was ...... blushing.
"I just ...... something replayed in my mind ...... of Lena and ...... it's fine, I'm fine!" She smiled reassuringly to Dewey and got back to her feet, brushing off some moon dust from her skirt. "Now are we going or wha~" A sudden burst to the door interrupted Webby.
Della looked up from where she was tampering with wires and gasped. "PENUMBRA!" She yelled, relief flowing over her like a river.
Penumbra pushed the ladder to the ship entrance down. "We have to go now! That holes not gonna hold them for long!" She ran to the front. "How do we get this moving?"
"Wait, what hole?" Scrooge questioned, raising an eyebrow at the strange purple lady.
Penny sighed. "I build a trap hole to trap monsters in but instead used it as a trap for Lunaris. Keep up, old man."
Scrooge grumbled, furrowing his eyebrows. "Old man. You're the old man here." He mumbled, with furrowed eyebrows as he puffed out and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Oh stop acting like a child!" Donald waved it off, walking over to Penny. "Are you okay?" He asked seriously.
"I'm fine but we have to go, like, right now!" She said.
"I just have to connect this cable to this cable aaaaand~" Using all her strength, Della tried pulling the cables together to connect, however, seeing as they were all tangled, it seemed to be easier said than done.
"Uhhh guys?" Huey said, drawing the kids attention as they too looked out the window with Huey.
Louie gasped. "They're coming!" He looked back at Della. "Mom hurry!"
"I'm ... trying!" Della grit her teeth as her face began to turn red but nonetheless, she kept trying. She didn't try and try to build a ship for ten years only to give up now, especially now that her family was in danger as well.
She continued pulling with all power, trying and trying until ......
Della gasped. "Oh no!" She sat up, holding one cable parted in both hands.
"What? What's wrong?" Donald asked, stepping forward.
"The cable broke!"
