Chapter 2: Meeting the Tree

Hey guys so I'm busy playing Sonic Frontiers and now I'll be adding a new love interest for you.

Yeah Sage and of course I'll be having the events of Sonic Frontiers take place in this story and I'll make her another love interest for you.

I think it'll be neat, plus she's adorable and I want a plushie of her.

So what do you think of her being a love interest?

I understand it's gonna be complicated to make a relationship between you and her work, but I'm willing to try and find a way.

Also, I should clear up that this story takes place during the beginning of the IDW comics so when Neo Metal Sonic was still in control of the Eggman Empire.

This had truly been a strange day.

After you fought off a horde odd creatures you met a new friend in the form of Sonic the Hedgehog who you were currently talking to sitting atop a hill near your home.

He was currently explaining things to you about how he got here.

Apparently those creatures you and he fought were called Robots, created by someone named "Dr Eggman."

That was an odd name in your opinion, but you won't judge.

He explained that a few robots had been causing trouble somewhere and apparently Sonic was a famous hero and was dealing with them.

However, the remaining robots had fled before they could be dealt with and Sonic chased them into a forest

The forest led both the robots and Sonic into Nibel where said robots began causing trouble forcing you and the other Spirits to take action.

Honestly you should have seen something like this coming.

Normally Nibel was protected from outside forces by a magical field which caused all who came close to the forest Nibel was located in would turn them around preventing entry.

However, this field was powered by the Spirit Tree and when Kuro stole the light of the forest turning it blind the field dissipated exposing the forest.

Thankfully it didn't take long for you to restore the forest but it would take some time before the field was fully restored.

You had hoped it would be up before anything else happened, but that was foolish of you.

"Well, Sonic I really can't thank you enough for helping me out." You thanked the blue Hedgehog who waved you off.

"Like I said, no problem, I'll help out anyone who needs it." Sonic assured. "Getting to break Eggman's toys was just a bonus."

"Well normally this place has a field making sure those who enter the forest end up exiting before discovering Nibel." You explained surprising Sonic.

"Oh, we always just thought the forest was super small." Sonic chuckled. "People walked in and came back out in a different area outside of the forest."

"That's how we were hoping to keep it, but prior events kinda made it difficult to maintain the field." You explained with a sigh.

"What happened?" Sonic asked and you immediately gained a solemn look staring at the ground.

"I-it's a...it's a long story." You said and Sonic immediately understood it was something that you didn't want to really talk about.

"Hey, it's cool, if you don't wanna tell me you don't have to." Sonic stated placing a hand on your shoulder.

This in turn made you smile at Sonic and you nodded as thanks for understanding.

"Well, can you at least tell me what you are and what this place is about?" Sonic asked and you thought for a moment.

"Very well, but can I trust you to keep this place a secret from the outside?" You asked and Sonic nodded.

"Sure man." He replied.

"I mean from everyone, even your closest friends." You clarified more seriously and that seemed to make Sonic hesitate. "You've already discovered this place, but please I beg you not to tell others."

"Why?" Sonic asked curiously. "Why keep this place a secret?"

"Promise me you'll keep this place a secret and I'll tell you." You answered.

Sonic sighed and thought for a moment.

He had already found this place he apparently wasn't supposed to, so might as well learn more about it.

He only hopes he won't let it slip in a conversation or something.

"Alright, I promise." Sonic said placing a hand on his chest and raising the other like a boy scout making an oath. "I won't spill the beans on this place."

You tilted your head after hearing that.

"What do beans have to do with this?" You asked and that made Sonic sweatdrop.

"Um, that means I won't tell anyone." Sonic clarified.

"Oh...okay then." You said before looking off into the distance. "This is Nibel, a forest inhabited by various creatures you most likely do not know, most notably Spirits, which is what I am."

"Spirit?" Sonic asked with a raised brow. "So like a ghost?"

You shook your head.

"No, we Forest Spirits are born from the tree and have an affinity with light and nature itself." You explained. "It's our jobs to protect and maintain the Spirit Tree which in turn keeps the forest alive which provides a home for the many creatures."

"Oh, so I'm guessing that's why you don't want the outside knowing about this place." Sonic stated with an understanding nod. "Something from the outside could threaten that tree."

You nodded and said: "Exactly."

"I get it now." Sonic said lying down in his back. "It's cool, you can trust me."

The Blue Hedgehog truly understood why you didn't want him telling people about this place.

He used to knew a certain Egg-shaped scientist who would have no doubt taken each Spirit here and used them for a power source for a new device or something like that.

"Thank you Sonic, I truly appreciate it." You said thankfully.

"(Y/N), Sonic, it's ready!" Came the voice of your mother who stood at the entrance of your home.

Hearing this got you excited as you jumped up with a huge smile.

When you got back home with Sonic you introduced him to Naru and Gumo and explained to them how he helped you out.

Both of them were extremely grateful to him for this deed and they wanted to repay him somehow.

So Naru decided to make her special vegetable stew, your favorite dish and have Sonic join you all for dinner.

"Yay, come on Sonic, you're gonna love my mom's Vegetable stew, I can garuntee it." You assured as the blue Hedgehog got up as well and dusted himself off.

"Alright, you've been hyping it up a lot, though I don't think it'll come close to Chillie Dogs." Sonic stated making you tilt your head in confusion.

"Chillie Dog?" You asked while giving a concerned look. "You...eat...dogs?"

Sonic sweatdropped after hearing that.

"Probably shoulda guessed you didn't know what that was." Sonic sighed sadly. "Honestly I wish I could show ya what you're missing out on."

"Well, I'm sure you'll still love it." You assured as you and Sonic began your walk to your home.

"Ori, blue one!" Yelled a voice making you and Sonic turn to see Pera running up to you.

"Pera?" You asked with a raised brow. "What's up?"

"Ori, the Spirit Tree wishes to see you and your new acquaintance." The Raccoon-like Spirit explained making you and Sonic look at each other.

You knew the Spirit Tree would want to meet with Sonic as he was the first outsider here, but you wanted to pay him back first.

"Okay...but...Naru's making her stew..." You said gesturing towards your mother who waved at Pera.

Upon hearing Naru was making her vegetable stew, Pera's stomach let out a small growl.

The female Spirit blushed in embarrassment.

"You know, you could join us dear, I made quite a bit." Naru stated walking up to all of you with a welcoming smile.

The smell of her cooking then reached Pera's nose and this caused the Spirit to drool slightly.

"I-I...suppose we could...go later." Pera said as her stomach growled louder.

"Yes." You cheered before rushing into your home causing Naru to giggle.

"He really does love my Vegetable Stew, no matter how far away he is, it's like he knows when I'm cooking it and rushes back as soon as he can." Naru commented as everyone else followed.

Later:
Sonic let out a satisfied burp as you, he and Pera all walked through the trees with full bellies.

"Okay, I'll admit it was probably one of the best things I've ever eaten." Sonic stated. "Chillie Dogs still number one though."

"You said they were made of meat right?" You asked and Sonic nodded in response. "Then I'm afraid I won't like it."

"Is that right?" Sonic asked.

"Yes, Ori here does not enjoy meat at all." Pera stated. "Most Spirits don't eat meat, though I personally love the taste of fish."

"You don't know what you're missing buddy, it's heaven between a bun." Sonic said with a sigh as he gained a dreamy expression.

All you did was simply shrug and continue your walk to the Spirit Tree.

Sonic along the way was amazed at this world that was hidden away for seemingly centuries.

There were creatures and plants he never knew existed along with some that did exist but looked far different than from what he was used to.

It really was like he stepped into a whole new world.

He really wished he could show his friends this place, it was really beautiful here.

Oh well.

After a few minutes of walking and sightseeing, the 3 of you finally made it to the Spirit Tree.

Sonic looked up in awe at the giant monolithic tree which glowed and pulsed with life.

It was like this tree was the heart of the forest, which made sense given the info you gave on this place.

"That is a big tree." Sonic said amazed.

"WELL, YOU ALL CERTAINLY TOOK YOUR TIME." The Spirit Tree bellowed out which made Sonic flinch a bit due to the volume of the tree's voice.

"Wow that's loud." Sonic said covering his ears.

"You get used it." Both you and Pera stated before you waved to the tree.

"Yeah, sorry for taking so long, it's just...mom was making her vegetable stew and Pera here was starving..." You explained pointing to your friend who looked down in embarrassment.

"S-sorry, it's just...you really should try her cooking..." Pera said before realizing what she just said.

"Did I just tell a tree it should try and eat something?" She asked herself as you and Sonic gave her weird stares.

The Spirit Tree would have too if it could.

"Anyway, Sonic meet the Spirit Tree and father to all Spirits in Nibel." You introduced.

"GREETINGS BLUE ONE!" The Spirit Tree greeted as Sonic's ears flattened in response to the loud echoey voice.

"Uh...hey, so you're the Spirit Tree huh?" Sonic asked.

"INDEED!" The Spirit Tree confirmed.

"So, how are Spirits born, do they grow from you?" Sonic asked jokingly with a chuckle.

"CORRECT!" The Spirit Tree confirmed once again surprising Sonic.

"Really?" Sonic asked looking at you and you nodded in response.

"I used to be a leaf." You stated as if that were a normal sentence.

"I was a flower." Pera added raising her hand.

Sonic had assumed a Spirit's birth was a lot more complex, maybe involving some kind of ritual or maybe Spirits could only be born in certain conditions like once on a full moon or something.

No though, it really is as simple as them simply growing from the tree.

"Alright then, so you wanted to see me?" Sonic asked curiously. "What's up?"

"AH YES OF COURSE, THIS INVOLVES YOU AS WELL ORI!" The Spirit Tree stated surprising you.

"Oh, what is it?" You asked with tilting your head.

"BLUE ONE..." The Spirit Tree stated.

"My name's Sonic..." Sonic stated.

"SONIC, YOU ARE AN OUTSIDER CORRECT!?" It asked and the Blue Hedgehog nodded. "YOU ALSO HELPED MY CHILD DEFEND THIS FOREST FROM ATTACK AS WELL CORRECT!?"

"Yeah, only with that big chameleon thing though." Sonic confirmed. "And only cause it surprised him, if it hadn't I'm sure he could've handled it himself."

"Don't sell yourself short Sonic, you really saved my life." You stated placing a hand on his shoulder.

"INDEED AND WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TOWARDS YOU SONIC!" The Spirit Tree thanked.

"No problem, it's just what I do." The Hero replied.

"So did you just want to thank Sonic?" You asked with a raised brow. "If so, then what about me?"

"AH YES, ORI WITH THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR NEW FRIEND, I AM AFRAID I MAY NEED YOU TO DO SOMETHING QUITE DIFFICULT!" It responded making you even more confused.

"Wh-what is it?" You asked your voice filled with worry.

"ORI, I AM AFRAID YOU WILL HAVE TO LEAVE NIBEL!" The Spirit Tree answered and hearing that made your eyes go wide in shock.
