1x8. First Period: Algebra 1
Another class going on during period one is Algebra I. The substitute of that class is Coach Joe Piskula.
"Alright, let's take our books out and get cracking on some math problems," Coach Joe exclaims way too excited for math.
Michael Cramarossa raises his hand. "What about the syllabus?"
Coach Joe gradually raises his hands up like as if he is surrendering. "Bear with me here," he starts gently, "you must understand, I'm not a teacher here, just a substitute...hopefully." He peers down at the textbook that is on his desk. "So, let's open up to... Ooo!" He shows the inside of the book to the others. "Look at that, a picture of a hockey rink!"
The book shows a word problem that includes a diagram of a ice hockey rink.
From the back of the classroom, Elias raises his hand.
Coach Joe spots him. "Yes, Thor Jr.?"
"Which page is that on?"
He turns the textbook over and takes a look at it. "Uh, page 235!"
Michael knits his eyebrows. "Shouldn't we start with chapter one?"
Coach Joe looks at him with delight. "You know what? That's a great idea! Turn to chapter one, please!" He begins flipping the pages.
Elias raises his hand again. "Which page is that on?"
"Page one!" Joe exclaims, stopping at page one.
Connor scrutinizes what the page is showing. "Wait, we learned this stuff in Pre-Algebra." He looks up at the substitute teacher. "How about chapter two?"
"Chapter two!" Coach Joe exclaims as he reroutes the pages to that chapter.
Elias raises his hand. "Which page is that one?"
Jack shoots Coach Joe a glare. "Page teacher-can't-make-up-his-mind," he sarcastically answers.
Coach Joe snaps his eyes at the students, since he heard the comment. He then shouts: "Yakety yak!"
The students fall into silence.
"Moo...," Michael replies uncertainly.
"Meow?" Sean Monahan makes a confused look.
"Woof," Jo Drouin adds on.
Coach Joe slowly moves his hand in a circular motion, like as if telling the students to say the right response. "Yakety...yak..."
Elias raises his hand. "What page is that on?"
Coach Joe shakes his head at him. "No, it's what I say to you guys to grab your attention. So when I say 'Yakety yak,"'you guys say..."
Silence falls on the class again. But that is quickly interrupted by Elias's scrambling search to find the right page.
Luckily, Anastasia, who is sitting next to him, shows him the page number where the hockey rink diagram is.
"Oh." Elias nods his head. "Thank you." He goes back to his book and flips to that page.
Michael replies back to Coach Joe's exclamation: "Mooo..."
Coach Joe raises his eyebrows at him. "Now, Lil'Cramberry, that's not what you say—"
Michael makes a suspicious look. "Wait, did you talk to my brother before this?"
"In fact, I did!" A smile appears on his face.
Michael's eyes narrow as he turns away. "Tricky one, he is..."
Coach Joe clears his throat. "So when I say 'yakety yak...' You guys say—"
A massive snore cuts into his sentence. Everyone turns to see where the snoring is coming from. Of course it's coming from the one and only Nick, who has his head on his desk, sleeping.
"Can I have a cinnamon roll...or bacon...? Doughnuts sound good...," he murmurs between snores.
Nathan MacKinnon has the expression that shows that he is done with this class from the start. "Are you kidding me?" he mutters in an irritated tone. "Can we get on with class now?
"Uh, Nick, just two more periods until you can eat..." Coach Joe's voice fades off as he hears Nick continue snoring and no longer talking.
Coach Joe turns back to the class. "As I was saying with yakety yak..."
