*time skip: Two and a half years later. Shadow is five years old while Sonic is three years old*

It was a beautiful and sunny day and Shadow and Sonic were in the garden, their parents sitting at the table on the porch, watching their children while they were playing. "Haha, you can't catch me Shadow." Sonic claimed as he was playing tag with his big brother. Shadow was trying to keep up with his little brother but whatever Shadow tried, he wasn't able to get near Sonic. Sonic was smiling victoriously and speed up until he noticed Shadow wasn't running after him anymore. His smile faded as he saw his big brother standing in the middle of the garden while looking down at the ground with a sad expression. Sonic came to a stop and ran back to his brother in the blink of an eye. "Hey, what's wrong Shadow?" Sonic asked worried. "I'll never be able to catch you, you can ran at the speed of sound and I have no such ability." Shadow replied. "But you're still faster than other kids." Sonic said, trying to cheer his older brother up. "You have a special ability and I'm just a normal kid." Shadow said avoiding eye contact with his younger brother. "You are stronger than me. Your strength is your special ability." Sonic replied with a big smile and hugged his older brother. Shadow was surprised at his little brothers reply but after a few seconds he hugged back. "You're right. Thanks Sonic." Shadow said and Sonic let go of him. "Tag, you're it." Shadow said as he tabbed Sonic's shoulder and ran off. "Hey no fair." Sonic yelled and ran after Shadow. In a blink of an eye he was behind Shadow and tapped him on the shoulder. "No, you're it." Sonic said and quickly changed directions but suddenly crashed into something or someone.

"Woah, Sonic! Please look were you're going." Sapphire said as she helped her younger son up. "Sorry mom." Sonic replied. "Shadow, your dad and I want to give you something." Sapphire said and Shadow looked up at his mother. "What is it?" Shadow asked. "You'll see." Sapphire said with a smile, here smile grew even bigger as Shadow crossed his arms with a 'are you serious' look on his face. "Just follow me." Sapphire ordered and Shadow and Sonic followed her inside the house. Terios was already waiting for the rest of his family inside the house. "Finally." Terios said as Sapphire, Shadow and Sonic entered the house. "Come here Shadow, I have something for you." Terios said, his hands still behind his back. Shadow walked in front of his father and looked up at him. "What are you hiding behind your back?" Shadow asked curiously. "Close your eyes and don't open them before I say so." Terios ordered and Shadow did what he was told. "Mom, what's the surprise?" Sonic asked curiously. "Just watch." Sapphire replied and Sonic turned back to his older brother and his father, who by now has revealed the surprise. "Now open your eyes Shadow." Terios ordered and Shadow opened his eyes. "Why are shoes a surprise? Everyone wears them." Sonic suddenly said as Shadow took the shoes from his fathers hands without saying a word, he was just examining them. "These, Sonic, are special shoes. The shoes are called air shoes. They allow the owner to ran almost as fast as you Sonic." Terios replied. "And? You boys wanna try them outside?" Sapphire asked. "Yeah." Sonic and Shadow said at the same time and already ran to the door, followed by their parents.

As Sapphire and Terios were outside, Shadow had already put on his knew shoes and was looking down at them. "And how do they work?" Shadow asked and looked questioning at his parents. "There's a button on the inside of your right shoe. When you push it you'll hover over the ground and for the rest you have to find out." Terios said with a smile. "But please be careful." Sapphire added and Shadow nodded. Shadow pushed the button with his toes and was suddenly hovering over the ground. "Whoa!" Shadow said as he almost lost his balance. "Cool. Now try running." Sonic said cheerfully. "O-okay." Shadow said and tried skating. "A bit unsteady but at least you didn't kiss the ground at your first try." Terios complimented but at the exact same moment as Terios finished his sentence Shadow fall to the ground. "Shadow you alright?" Sonic asked and helped his older brother up. "Yeah I accidentally pushed the button inside the shoe." Shadow explained. "Now you just have to work on your speed and you and Sonic can race." Sapphire said happily as Shadow activated his air shoes again. A month later he perfected his running style and Sonic and Shadow were finally able to race.

*time skip: Shadow is seven years old and in school already while Sonic is five years*

It was a sunny Sunday morning and Sapphire was working in the garden as all of a sudden a blue blur past her followed by a black blur. "Boys please be careful!" Sapphire yelled after them but got no answer from her boys. "Ha, got you!" Shadow said as he tapped Sonic's shoulder, then turned around passing his mother again, Sonic passing her a second later, leaving Sapphire with dust all over her. "Shadow! Sonic!" Sapphire yelled and Shadow stopped, unfortunately Sonic realized that too late. "Ouch!" Shadow muffled into the ground and Sonic got off of his older brother. "Ups ... Sorry Shadow." Sonic apologized and helped Shadow up. "It's okay, I'm fine." Shadow said while dusting himself off, then turned around to face their mother who still stood near her flowers. She had here hands on her hips and looked angrily at her sons, dirt still covered her fur and clothes. "Sorry mom." Shadow and Sonic said at the same time and their mother's glare softened. "Please stop running around while I'm working in the garden." Sapphire said and Shadow's and Sonic's ears dropped. "But we want to play around." Sonic complained and crossed his arms. "And you said that we shouldn't run in the house, so where else should we play?" Shadow said a bit annoyed. "You two could go to the playground and play there." Sapphire suggested. "Yeah, come on Shadow, we're going to the playground." Sonic said already dragging his older brother with him. "Fine." Shadow said and followed his little brother. "Race ya!" Shadow yelled and ran ahead of Sonic. "Hey no fair, wait for me." Sonic yelled and speed off after Shadow.

Within two minutes they reached the playground. "I don't want to play tag anymore." Sonic said and looked around the playground. "So what do you wanna do?" Shadow asked while Sonic was looking around the playground. "Let's built a sandcastle." Sonic said excited as he saw the sandbox. "If you insist." Shadow replied and the two brothers started building. After five minutes they were almost finished with their castle as Shadow stood up. "I'm back in a minute, I'm just going to the toilet." Shadow said and Sonic nodded then continued playing while Shadow went off. A green hedgehog walked up to Sonic and jumped on the sandcastle. "Hey, Scourge stop! You're destroying the castle." Sonic claimed and tried to get him away. Sonic knows the green hedgehog from kindergarten and the two don't really like each other. Scourge pushed Sonic to the ground and Sonic scraped his knee. "Ow!" Sonic said as he hit the ground. "I rule this playground so get out of my sight." Scourge said and jumped on Sonic and Shadow's sandcastle to destroy it completely. Sonic stood up and pushed Scourge away causing him to fall down. "Mephiles!" Scourge yelled and started crying and his older brother was immediately at his side. "What's wrong Scourge?" Mephiles asked. "That blue hedgehog pushed me to the ground." Scourge replied between sobs. "No that's not tr- Ahhh!" Sonic said before Mephiles took him by his quills causing Sonic to flinch. "Then why is he crying?" Mephiles asked, pulling more on his quills. "Argh ... H-he pushed me first and destroyed mine and my brothers sandcastle." Sonic replied. "Liar!" Mephiles said and punched Sonic in his stomach, knocking the air out of his lungs. At this moment Shadow came back and saw his brother holding his stomach in pain. He ran up to Mephiles and punched him in the face, causing him to let go of Sonic, who landed on the ground roughly. Sonic took deep breath to get air back into his lungs. "What do you think you're doing Mephiles?" Shadow asked as Mephiles finally looked at the black and red hedgehog. "If it isn't Shadow the emo-hog. *Shadow bent his ears back and growled at Mephiles, who smiled evilly at Shadow* Teaching your little brother a lesson because he's a little liar." Mephiles replied and wanted to kick Shadow's foot. But Shadow dodged as he made a step back but then he stumbled over Scourge's foot and fell on his back, giving Mephiles the opportunity to attack Shadow again.

Mephiles and Shadow were fighting for ten minutes now and both were bloody. Shadow had a black eye and his lip was bleeding while Mephiles had a bloody nose and a bruise on his cheek. Shadow finally pinned Mephiles to the ground and he was about to hit him but he was interrupted by his little brother who suddenly screamed in pain. Scourge had kicked against Sonic's shine with full force and Sonic heard something snap before he fall to the ground and started screaming in pain while holding his left leg. "Sonic!" Shadow yelled and wanted to run to his brother but Mephiles took this opportunity and grabbed Shadow's right arm and twisted it behind his back. "Mephiles let go of me!" Shadow commanded but Mephiles wasn't listening. "Why should I?" Mephiles replied as he just twisting Shadow's arm further and Shadow clenched his teeth together. "Please stop." Shadow begged as he sank to his knees as Mephiles twisted his arm farther. Shadow's arm hurt so bad, it felt like it was going to break. Mephiles chuckled before there was a loud snap sound and Shadow screamed in agony as pain shot through Shadow's arm. Mephiles finally let go of Shadow and made his way over to Sonic, who was still sobbing on the ground. He took Sonic by his shirt and held him up so he was face to face with Mephiles. "Too bad that almost everyone knows that you can't swim." Mephiles said evilly and pushed Sonic in the middle of the pond. "Sonic!" Shadow yelled and Mephiles was smiling victoriously as Sonic tried to keep his head over water. "Come on Scourge let's leave those losers alone." Mephiles ordered and his little brother followed him. "Shadow help. Please help me!" Sonic screamed as he started struggling in the water and tried to swim but he still couldn't swim and began to panic and screamed for Shadow to help him. Shadow, finally coming out of his shock, got to his feet, ignoring the pain in his arm and jumped into the pond to rescue his little brother. Sonic was about to sink but then someone took his arm and pulled him up. Sonic took a deep breath and coughed up the water he had swallowed. "Put your arms around my neck." Shadow commanded and Sonic did what he was told and Shadow swam back to the edge of the pond, ignoring the pressure Sonic put on his injured shoulder. Sonic let go of Shadow and let himself fall to the ground, already forgotten of his injured leg. "Ouch" Sonic cried out and fell to the ground while holding his left shine. "Sonic are you okay?" Shadow asked and Sonic looked up and saw that Shadow had a pained look on his face as well. "No, my shine hurts like crazy." Sonic sobbed and tears were running down his cheeks. "Shh, it's okay!" Shadow said as he hugged his little brother. Sonic hugged back and sobbed into Shadow's fine shoulder. "I'm sorry. ... That's all my fault." Shadow said and lowered his ears as Sonic sat down beside him. "Why is it your fault." Sonic asked as he finally calmed down. "Because if I wouldn't have left you alone Scourge and Mephiles would never have shown up." Shadow said and lowered his ears in guilt. "It wasn't your fault. After all you came to rescue me." Sonic said and hugged Shadow again. "I promise I'll always protect you and nothing will stop me." Shadow said as he hugged back. "Thank you so much Shadow." Sonic replied and hugged him tighter causing Shadow to flinch. "Ow." Shadow said and Sonic immediately  let go of him. "Are you hurt?" Sonic asked worried. "It's noting." Shadow said and stood up again. "We better get home and tell our mom." Shadow said and helped Sonic up. "Can you walk?" Shadow asked. "No, it hurt's really badly." Sonic said tearing up again as he tried to walk. "Take my hand." Shadow said and held his hand out for Sonic to grab it. Sonic took his hand and they made their way back to their home.

*time skip*

"Could you open the door please?" Shadow asked and Sonic did what he was told, at first he wanted to ask why he should open the door but he thought better of it. They walked into the house and went into the kitchen where their mother was cooking dinner. "Mom, Sonic is hurt." Shadow said and their mother turned around worried. "What happened?" Sapphire asked and knelt down to be on eye level with her kids. "Scourge and Mephiles attacked him and now he can't walk and his left leg hurts badly. And his right knee is also bleeding." Shadow explained. "Shadow came to rescue me and I think he got hurt too." Sonic said quickly before his mother could say anything. "What happened to you Shadow?" Sapphire asked as she saw his bloody lip and bruised eye. "Nothing. I'm fine!" Shadow replied. "Shadow if you're hurt then tell me." Sapphire said and put her hands on Shadow's shoulders, causing him to flinch and hold his arm in pain. "I think his arm is injured, because Mephiles twisted it." Sonic said and Sapphire thought everything over for a second. "We better get you two in the hospital." Sapphire said and put the pots away from the oven. "And why are you so wet?" Sapphire asked. "Mephiles throw Sonic into the pond and I rescued him." Shadow explained and their mother nodded. "Then we'll put you in dry clothes first." Sapphire said and went into their bedroom to get dry clothes. She then helped them change, grabbed her purse and took Sonic. They walked to their car and Sapphire placed Sonic in his seat and then opened the door for Shadow. Both were sitting on the backseat and their mother started the car.

*time skip*

Sapphire, Shadow and Sonic entered the hospital, Sonic still in his mothers arms and Shadow walking beside his mother. Sapphire walked to the receptionist and put Sonic down, who than grabbed Shadow's good hand for support. "Hello what's the problem." the grey raccoon asked. "My two boys got in a fight with two other boys on the playground. Sonic's leg might be broken and Shadow's arm is also injured." Sapphire replied and the raccoon nodded. "Please fill this out and wait in the waiting room, a doctor will soon take a look on your two boys." the raccoon said and handed her the papers. "Thanks." Sapphire said and took Sonic back up and walked to the seats in the waiting room. "Mom I'm bored." Sonic said after she finished filling out the papers. "You'll have to deal with it, we have to wait and you're in no condition to run around." Sapphire said and stroke Sonic's head. "Fine." Sonic said, seeing that he has to sit down and wait. "I'll let you two alone for a few minutes. I'm going to call your dad that we're at the hospital and that he has to finish cooking dinner." Sapphire said and the two little hedgehogs nodded. After two minutes he looked to his older brother and saw that a tear was about to roll down his cheek. "Shadow are you okay?" Sonic asked and Shadow just nodded, not wanting to talk and avoided eye contact but then a second tear rolled down his cheek and Sonic know something was wrong. "Mom Shadow is crying." Sonic said as their mother went back into the waiting room. Sapphire knelt down in front of Shadow and whipped the tears off of his cheeks while Shadow didn't look at her. "Shadow please look at me, you're going to be okay." Sapphire said and stroke his head. "But it hurts so much." Shadow whispered as he started crying. Sonic bent his ears back and had a shocked look on his face. He never saw his older brother cry in front of him. Shadow was always there for Sonic and never showed pain but now he was sobbing into their mother's shoulder and Sonic new that Shadow was really in pain right now. Sapphire finally managed to calm Shadow down and set down on Sonic's right.

After half an hour a doctor finally came into the waiting room. "Shadow and Sonic the Hedgehog." he said and their mother took Sonic again and they walked to the doctor, who was a brown wolf. "Please follow me." the wolf said before he walked into a room. "Please sit down on that table." the doctor said and Sapphire sat Sonic on the table and helped Shadow up as well. "So, you two got into a fight?" the doctor asked and the two kids nodded. "And what happened exactly during your fight?" the brown wolf asked as he walked over to the table. "Scourge destroyed mine and Shadow's sandcastle as Shadow was on the toilet. He then pushed me and I scraped my knee *pointing on his right bloody knee* Then I pushed him and Scourge's brother came and pulled on my quills and then punched me in the stomach really hard. Shadow came back and began to fight with Mephiles and then Scourge kicked my leg and something snapped." Sonic replied quickly. "Okay let me see." the doctor said and shoved Sonic's pants up so he could examine Sonic's legs. "Let's clean your knee first so it won't get infected." the doctor said and got disinfectant spray and a bandage. The doctor then wiped off the blood on his knee before he sprayed some of the disinfectant spray on the scrap. "Ow, that burns." Sonic complained and had a pained look on his face. The doctor then gently placed the bandage on the scrap. "There Sonic, all done." the doctor said and Sonic opened his eyes again, not  knowing when he closed them. Then the doctor examined Sonic's other leg. Sonic left shine bone looks like it was broken and was swollen badly."Owowowow" Sonic said as the doctor felt the bone. "I think your shine bone is broken but we better make an X-ray. Now let's see your stomach." the doctor said and Sonic put off his shirt. "You'll just have a bruise for the following days but that's nothing too serious." the doctor said after he examined Sonic's stomach. "And what happened to you Shadow. "Well I fought with Mephiles but then I wanted to help Sonic because he screamed in pain. Mephiles twisted my arm behind my back until their was a loud snapping noise." Shadow said while holding his arm in pain. "Take your shirt off and let me have a look." the doctor said and Shadow did what he was told with the help of his mother. The doctor observed Shadow's shoulder and it was purple and swollen. "Looks like your shoulder is dislocated. We have to push it back into place." the doctor said and the nurse hold Shadow in place to stop him from moving. "Hold still Shadow." the doctor warned before he pushed Shadow's dislocated shoulder back into place. Shadow screamed in pain and started crying while Sonic covered his ears because of the loudness. The doctor gave Shadow an ice pack to cool his shoulder and Sapphire stroke Shadow's back to calm her crying child down. "Here place this on his eye. *the doctor handed Sapphire another ice pack* In the meantime I'll go and make a X-ray of Sonic's foot so Shadow can rest for a few minutes." the doctor informed and Sapphire nodded. She gently pressed the ice pack on Shadow's left eye while the doctor left the room with Sonic.

Shadow had calmed down as Sonic and the doctor went back into the room. "His leg is broken and he'll get a plaster cast." the doctor informed Sapphire who nodded. Then the doctor put a plaster cast on his broken leg and handed Sonic crutches. "Here, you'll have to go with these for about four weeks." the doctor said, much to the hyperactive hedgehog's dislike. "Does that mean I am not allowed to run?" Sonic asked worried. "Just for four weeks. As soon as your leg has healed you'll be able to run as much as you want." The doctor replied and Sonic nodded sadly. Then the doctor left the room with Shadow to make a X-ray of Shadow's arm. His arm was broken and he also got a plaster cast. "This will support you're shoulder Shadow." the doctor said as he put Shadow's arm in a sling to support his shoulder. "You also have to deal with this the next four to five weeks." the doctor said and Shadow nodded. "Make sure that the cast don't get wet and that Sonic nor Shadow are putting any pressure on their injuries, especially on Sonic, I think he can be really hyperactive." the doctor said looking at Sonic. "Hey I'm not hyperactive." Sonic complained and his mother laughed. "Sure you aren't." Sapphire replied and stroke Sonic's head. "So we'll see us in two weeks." the doctor said to Sapphire who nodded. "Yeah, we'll see us in two weeks and thanks again. *Sapphire shakes hands with the doctor* Sonic, Shadow don't forget to say good bye." Sapphire said as her boys were already waiting at the door. "Bye." Sonic and Shadow said at the same time. "Good bye." Sapphire said before she opened the door for her two boys.

*time skip, it was already 9 p.m.*

Sapphire parked the car and got out of her car, then helped Sonic out and opened Shadow the car door. "Let's hope your father finished cooking because I'm starving." Sapphire said as she walked to the front door of her house. Sapphire opened the door and let her boys in first. "Terios we're home!" Sapphire yelled before loud steps came from the kitchen. "Shadow, Sonic what happened." Terios said worried as he looked at his two sons. "Who did this to you?" he then asked angrily. "Scourge and Mephiles showed up an-" Shadow started but got interrupted by his father. "I'll call the police tomorrow and I swear there will be consequences for those two hedgehogs." Terios said angrily. "Don't worry Terios. *Sapphire stepped in front of him* I already told the police about that and their parents will pay the hospital for Sonic's and Shadow's medical treatment." Sapphire said calming her husband down. "Well, that's the least they can do." Terios said still a little angry. "Now come on, dinner is ready." Terios said and took Sonic into his arms. "Dad you should have seen Shadow, he beat Mephiles up as well and he would have won if Scourge wouldn't have hurt me." Sonic said as he told his dad about the accident. "Good job Shadow." Terios said happily but got a death glare from his wife. "Thanks dad." Shadow said as he sat down at the table. "No that's not a good job but at least he didn't start the fight." Sapphire said as she put the rest of the food on the table. "What ever, let's start eating." Terios said and put food on Shadow's and Sonic's plate. "Bon appedite!" Terios said and started eating his soup as well as Sapphire and Sonic. Shadow took his spoon with his left hand and wanted to start eating as well but somehow the soup wasn't on the spoon anymore as Shadow finally managed to get the spoon to his mouth. "Grrr. Stupid food." Shadow whispered angrily as he tried eating his soup again. "Should I help you?" Sapphire asked and Shadow nodded embarrassed. "That's nothing you have to be embarrassed about Shadow. You just have to get used to doing things with your left hand now instead of your right hand." Terios said and Shadow glared at the sling. "Stupid Mephiles, that's all his fault." Shadow cursed until his mother shoved the spoon into his mouth. "Stop cursing and start eating." Sapphire said and continued feeding her older son until Shadow took the spoon. "I can do that myself." Shadow said and somehow managed to eat his dinner with a bit difficulties. Fifteen minutes of eating later Shadow and Sonic walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. "I'm bored and I want to run around." Sonic complained as Shadow turned on the TV. "Don't even think about running around. You heard the doctor, we shouldn't put any pressure on our injuries or else you'll end up longer with crutches then you have already." Shadow said after he turned off the TV, not finding something interesting. "Then why don't we play board games." Sapphire said as she entered the living room followed by her husband who held Monopoly in his hands. "Yeah let's play board games." Sonic said cheerfully, his mind finally put off of running around. The all sat down on the carpet and started the game.

*time skip, later this evening*

Shadow and Sonic were sitting in Sonic's bed. Shadow had a flashlight in his left hand and a big book was in Sonic and Shadow's lap. Sonic looked happily at the pictures as his big brother was reading the story. After Shadow read the last sentence of the chapter he looked at his little brother who was looking at the pictures with interest. "We'll start the next chapter tomorrow." Shadow said and Sonic closed the book. "Fine." Sonic replied and crossed his arms. "Hey don't be angry at me, I'm exhausted and I have to go to school tomorrow." Shadow said as he stood up. "I'm not angry with you, it's just so annoying that I can't run around." Sonic complained once again. "Don't start this topic again. It's just for four weeks we'll get through this." Shadow said and put the book on Sonic's nightstand. "Yeah you're right. Good night Shads." Sonic replied with a smile. "Good night Sonic and stop calling me Shads." Shadow said. "Never." Sonic whispered as Shadow closed Sonic's bedroom door. 

*four weeks later, in the hospital*

Sonic and Shadow were waiting in the waiting room once again with their parents. "Shadow and Sonic the hedgehog." the same nurse from last time said and the family followed her to the doctor. "So how are you two doing." the doctor asked after the two brothers were placed on the table again. "I'm fine." Shadow and Sonic replied. "Good then let's put those casts off of you." the doctor said before he cut the plaster cast off of Sonic's foot and Shadow's arm. "We'll make an X-ray again so we can see if your bones healed correctly." the doctor said and Sonic and Shadow nodded. Five minutes later the doctor came back with a clipboard in his hand. "And is everything alright?" Sapphire asked a bit worried that something is wrong. "Yes their bones healed perfectly." the doctor replied. "Finally. Now everything is going back to normal." Shadow said with relief. "So does this mean I can ran around again?" Sonic asked with a smile on his face. "Yeah but don't overdo it. Your leg needs to get used to sports again." the doctor said. "That means no running at the speed of sound for the next days Sonic." Terios said and Sonic's ears dropped. "What? You serious?" Sonic asked and Terios nodded. "Anyway, thanks again doctor." Sapphire said as Sonic started discussing with his father while Shadow was just listening to their conversation. "No problem. *shakes Sapphires hand* Well, I have some other patients to take care of. Bye Sonic, Shadow." the doctor said before he left the room. "Bye doctor." Shadow said. "Bye." Sonic replied before he continued discussing. "Let's drive home." Sapphire said interrupting her discussing child and husband.
