Chapter 13:
As the scarlet fluid that once used to run in Timmy's veins, pooled on the floor beneath his feet, Fiona let out a gasp so loud it made the hair on the nape of Rachel's neck up. Jared eyes widened, threatening to come out of their sockets.
I'm a dead woman, Rachel thought. The dark crimson, with its metallic odor, almost made Rachel want to throw up. She was trembling slightly with fear and out of worry of how much Fiona would start hating her. When she felt her hand on her shoulder, she almost jumped under the touch, startled by the soft expression Fiona was giving her.
Within seconds, Mrs. Keen arrived, flanked by two boys, who picked Timmy up and led him to the doctor's room.
"The three of you, go to the Principal's office. You've got a lot of explaining to do." Mrs. Keen ordered the trio.
Rachel was almost on the verge of tears. Fiona took hold of her hand and kept murmuring, "It's alright." as they made their way to the Principal's office.
As was expected, the Principal wasn't quite pleased with what had happened and the three of them were given detention for a whole month, starting from tomorrow. Even though it wasn't Jared's or Fiona's fault, they were blamed for instigating the fight.
Rachel insisted on going to her own house after leaving the Principal's office but Fiona forced her to come along. Everyone remained oddly quiet throughout their journey back home. Jared hadn't even spoken once after the fight.
Once they reached home, Jared went up to his bedroom and locked the room.
"I think you should talk to Jared first. He has been awfully quiet." Rachel told Fiona as they sat on the couch in the living room.
"That's because he probably blames himself for this whole thing, but I trust him not to do something stupid. I don't trust you."
Reminded of what had happened a few minutes from now, guilt consumed Rachel, burning her insides and making her head throb in pain. She felt dizzy and tears threatened to spill out of her eyes.
"Oh, Rachel. Please don't cry, you did the right thing."
Rachel choked on her tears. "R-right thing? You think Timmy will ever get back with you after t-this?"
"I don't want to get back with him."
"B-but didn't you love him?"
"Yes, I did. But I can't love someone who doesn't respect my brother."
"So you aren't mad at me?"
"Why would I be, you idiot?"
"You aren't even sad?"
"A little. But I like to look on the bright side of things."
"I don't think there is a sunny side to this situation."
"Well, a) We can dance to Single Ladies and b) I think it's good that I have one less person to depend upon."
"Isn't it like a good thing to have people to catch you every time you fall?"
"No Rachel, it isn't. And like they say, in the end, you've got to be your own hero, because everyone is too busy trying to save themselves."
