Chapter 18

The Conductor flicked his baton. The band sat up. He flicked his hand. The music had begun. It was an ominous woodwind flutter. Then a small brass built up... all the instruments were playing, building up, building up... then came the beat.

"Seriously? Flight of the Valkyries?" I asked.

"Just a warmup..." he said flicking his wrist almost looking like a wizard. I threw a knife at the podium he was standing on, and it bounced off.

"Force field for the band, huh?" I remarked.

"Yup, while I'm up here, you can't attack," he said.

"Not much of a fight," I muttered.

"Gives me time to charge my sonic blasts. Just business. Guards!" he yelled, and a group of twenty men came in.

"The music I play strengthens them and makes them my slaves boy," he said, as the guards started attacking.

"Huh. Explains the choice of music. They were mighty warriors, those Valkyries," I said, throwing my knifes at the nearest guy, then doing a backflip over one guy to shove him into another. I touched my thumb and index to summon my knives back.

"Learned some new tricks?" he asked me.

"Oh of course I did," I said, kicking a gun out of one the guard's hands. I went for a knife and was elbowed in the face. I was momentarily blindsided, give the rest of the guards a chance to pull out their handguns.

"Shouldn't have brought a knife to a gunfight, Knifesliger," The Conductor said.

"Hasn't stopped me before," I said.

"Kill him," he responded. This was starting to go downhill real quick.

"Sorry Marie. Looks like some death may or may not happen here. And Jennifer, if you are watching, look away. Just for about an hour," I thought, looking up to the heavens. Hey, if they are trying to kill me, I have every right to kill them. I'll try my best not to though. Two shots rang out at me, and I dodged easily, rolled, and threw knives as I went. I charged forward toward a guard, grabbed him around the neck with one arm, swung behind him, jumped over the top of him and used his body weight to pull him over my head and slam him to the ground. I then jumped up pretty highly, and threw a knife into each of his legs. One down. I landed on top of another guard and used him as a body shield against some more bullets coming at me. I was throwing knives like crazy, a whirlwind of my fury. Two more guards down, jump, roll, magnetize, another two more. Duck, jump, hit, throw, magnetize, demagnetize, roll, slice. I was like a machine, easily, calmly, and effectively taking out the guards. After five minutes, I was down to five guards, and the song was done.

"Phew. Can we call it quits now?" I asked, taking a breath.

"Wore out all ready? Guards, step aside. He's mine now. Band, flip to page eight, John Williams should be the composer," The Conductor said.

"I was just saving my energy for you," I said.

"I'm all powered up though," he said with a smirk, and started conducting again.

"Oh shit," I said, recognizing the piece right off the bat. The band blasted out its sound, the sound of a mighty hero. Superman. He wasn't blasting soundwaves at me yet, but I knew it was coming. Ten seconds in the song came the first blast. BUM BUM-BUM! I was thrown back. The theme continued, but the music quieted down for another introduction of sound at twenty five seconds in. Bum budummm bu bu da da dum dadum... bababa bum budumm bu da da dum dadum... bababa bum bababa... Sorry, you kinda have to imagine what the theme sounds like, but at any of the powerful loud note he shot sound out at me. It was hard to get any attacks in with the constant dodging.

One minute and thirteen seconds in, the music finally slowed down enough, but now he was on the defense. I could resist his mind control technology well enough, but I attacked on the beats of the songs, and he dodged, knowing this song like the back of his hand. It was a game of cat and mouse, but the cat being Tom (constantly failing) and the mouse being Jerry (outsmarting). I knew that the music would switch him into offence mode sooner or later, so I didn't use too much energy on my own attacks, just enough to keep him distracted. Around three minutes in, the tempo picked back up, exited the ballad portion and went to the original pace, where he started attacking. This time I listened to the tempo. His attacks were also along the beat of the song, and simple enough to dodge once I got the hang of it. I only had about a minute before the song ended, and once it ends, I should have enough time to get his baton and end this fight. I dodged and dodged, making sure to get the occasional knife throw in. Finally, the song ended.

"Do you surrender now?" I asked.

"Band, turn to..." he started to say. I turned on my magnet and summoned my knives to me. They came from everywhere, attaching to me, and some whizzing by The Conductor, cutting him in different places.

"Don't do it. You are lucky I didn't throw any knives behind you," I said. He went to speak again, and I threw a knife at him. Right before it hit his hand, I summoned it back. I had hit his baton, as thin as it was, right down the center. It fell out of his hand, split in two.

"Fine. Ego meum iurare deditionem," he said.

"Accipio," I said, and we shook hands. I'm sure you are confused, so I'll explain. When a villain surrenders to another villain, we say these words to each other. It's like a splitting of bread, renewing friendship or something like that. The language is Latin. When you surrender, you say, I swear my surrender. Whoever defeats you either accepts or denies your surrender. If a villain is denied, he is killed. I was lucky enough to have my privileges removed. If the Conglomerates really wanted it, they could demand my death. I accepted his surrender, so there was no reason for any more death.

"What do you want to know?" he asked.

"I need to know more about this new villain. I also need to know why he wants to frame me," I said.

"Look Knifeslinger, I can't tell you much. I don't know much. His villain name is like... The Disastrous Nuclear... something with the letter... B? No, C? D? Anyways, his powers were sh..." The Conductor said, before he was cut off. He tried to speak, but blood started pouring out of his mouth. He fell face forward, and he had a knife sticking out of the back of his neck.

"What? No! No, No, NO!" I screamed. I grabbed him to see if I could stop the bleeding, but I knew I was already too late. I looked in the direction I though the knife came from, and saw the silhouette of a person before they disappeared. I needed to stop him. I jumped up and through the window I saw him in. I looked around and saw him flit over a roof top. I jumped from roof to roof, following his shadow. With one step closer he seemed to get two steps further. I knew all the shortcuts all the roads, but it seemed I found my match. I wasn't about to give up just yet. I concentrated, felt my stability, my strength, my mind, and my power within me. Time slowed around me. I locked into my powers, and moved faster, my mind working rapidly, reflexes toned, muscles at full strength. I leapt and bound about, moving faster, jumping further. I managed to catch up to the assailant. Now we were neck and neck. I finally sped up enough to get in front of him. I then started running backward, facing the killer. I threw and retrieved knives striking him a few times, but he managed to deflect most of my attacks. Man, I wished I had my chain knives. I looked behind me and memorized the landscape for a second, then returned my attention back to the killer.

"Why did you do it?!?" I asked him, yelling so he could hear me.

"It's too early Leonardo Sutton! You will know my reason soon enough!" he yelled.

"Who are you?! How do you know my name?!" I screamed.

"I'm the new villain in town! I know everything about you! About the death of your family!" he said.

"No! Why kill a fellow villain! It's against the code!" I yelled with fury.

"He was sharing too much information, mate. He was absolutely minging anyway. You will know who I am, and won't be able to stop me," he said, then he threw a smoke bomb, and disappeared.

"No! It can't be! Why!" I screamed. His words repeated back to me. Mate. Minging. Only one person who I knew talked like that. Sure there are plenty of British people, but I recognized this dialect.

Will. My close friend, now my enemy. How could I have not seen this coming? Why did it have to be Will? He knew my past. How? One thing he didn't plan for was Leonard Arthurson though. He spoke as Will but didn't tell me his identity, so my cover at the school hasn't been blown. I now had the upper hand. I needed to trap him, to stop whatever he is planning, but how? What about getting a hero to do it for me...? Things were starting to click into place.
