A national holiday and a Surprise

Christmas Day 2007 was going to be a big day. Only Veronica didn't know this herself. She was completely unaware just how big this day was going to be. It was a well harboured secret of what the day was going to bring. To her knowledge this was just going to be another Christmas,  her third with her son but not any special one.

To her knowledge it was just going to be the normal people in attendance, Billy and Jake who had been coming for years now, her mother and Phil would also be in attendance this year. She supposed it was because Bella was not up in Phoenix meaning that it would only be the two of them, so this year her mother was coming to Forks. That in itself was exciting because her mother had only spent Matthew's first Christmas with them two years ago and that was only a very quick visit for she was driving and it was a long drive back to wherever their next stop on the baseball tour was. It would also give her someone to talk to in the kitchen whilst she was the one cooking.

That was where she found herself, stood in the kitchen checking everything that was supposed to be cooking was actually turned on and doing okay. Her mother perched upon the table talking to her idly as they waited on the food. The boys were in the living room in front of the TV watching some sort of highlights of the games, she wasn't really sure but as long as they weren't stepping on her toes she didn't mind. She could hear them trying to explain what was going on to Matthew who would cheer whenever some sort of point was scored irregardless of the team who scored.

"Do you know if your sister is going to be joining us?" Renee asked her youngest waiting to gauge the reaction, she hadn't heard much from the younger girl about her elder sister since the wedding which was in contrast to what they had all thought. Most were convinced she would be hearing from Bella who would beg her younger sister to take in baby number two.

"I'm not sure Ma', last I heard they were going to be travelling back to forks for the Christmas period but I'm not sure if they are going to see Edward's family or not. Bella hasn't really been in contact much." Veronica sighed out, it was true she had heard maybe twice from her elder sister but that was it, not that she had expected much. The last thing she had heard from Bella was that the second baby was a little girl and Bella was excited to have a daughter. This was a massive kick in the face considering she still refused to even consider Matthew her son or anything but she was willing to have this second child.

"Her and Edward are still together?" Renee questioned and Veronica turned to look at her mother, did she not know, had Bella not been in contact with their mother.

"Did you not know? He's sticking around for some reason." Veronica's response was short and you could hear her distaste to the entire situation that was going on. The truth was that she was aware that Bella was supposedly the vampires

"And the Newton kid?"

"Local gossip says he travels back and forth to the appointments but I'm not sure." Veronica added on a little uncomfortable with her mothers questions considering she wasn't really sure what was going on in her elder sisters life, she wasn't overly concerned about this as she had been kept in the dark about a lot of things as of recent but this still remained the same. "Can we talk about something else Mom?" She tried to move the conversation away not knowing what else to tell to her nosey mother.

"Of course, that strapping lad of yours, hmm?" Renee tested the water wondering what her daughter would say.

"You mean the idiot I'm hopelessly in love with? Honestly mom its like I'm raising two toddlers most of the time. He came home the other day after receiving detention on the night he was supposed to pick Matthew up. Want to know why he got detention?" Veronica muttered out she did love the boy but he was a handful.

"Go on, I can't be surprised by much anymore these days." Renee inched closer to her daughter ready to hear whatever the reason was.

"He started a food fight, threw some Jello at another kid because he called Jake 'big nose' then admitted to having a big nose and that this kid's outfit looked too sour and could use something sweet." Veronica could only shake her head at the behaviour, considering they were both now 18 and adults in some parts of the law she couldn't believe this was the kinda behaviour he was showing, but she also could because this was Jacob she was talking about. Her mother let out a little chuckle in response.

"Your father was just like that at his age, boys are all the same." Renee tried to encourage her daughter to just keep going.

"I wouldn't have been too upset about it all but he requested I washed his clothes that still had food on them so his dad didn't find out. His dad already had the call about the food fight." Veronica chuckled out this time as she turned to look at her mother. To take in the older woman's appearance for the first time in a while. She saw the eyes she had staring back at her, that blue grey swirl that seemed to be one of the few things she got from her mother. It was such a pretty colour when she looked at them on another person. Her mother's blonde hair was curled as it rested on her shoulders and she could see the small littering of freckles on her mothers face. The freckles were the one thing she wished she had for her mother for they were so full and so pretty yet all she had was a small dose of them that she normally ended up covering using makeup.

Her focusing on her mother's appearance had meant she was unaware of another figure entering the kitchen. That was until two arms wrapped their way around her waist and she quickly settled into their familiarity.

"I heard you were talking about me." Came the ever playful and still loud voice of Jacob.

"Hmm did I tell any lies?" Veronica hummed back

"No." His voice was slightly smaller as he admitted the truth but it was completely true.

"Can you leave the food for a while? Matthew is getting aggy about the presents under the tree." Jake continued on and Veronica had to let out a little sigh. The reason Matthew was getting irritated regarding to not opening his stuff was because the two young parents did spoil the toddler. They both knew they did but they couldn't stop, that was their little boy.

"Yeah sure, we don't want a stroppy two year old." Veronica agreed as she turned to look at her mother "If that's okay with you Mom?" She added secondly

"Of course let's go and see to the tree."

The presents were all given out to Veronica's knowing she had no reason to otherwise, no idea what was in store for her. She continued her afternoon and evening like she did every year, as they watched the Muppets a Christmas Carrol. She didn't think much of her mother and Phil staying late into the evening or Billy. Not even when they stayed past Matthew being put to bed at 8pm having fallen asleep in Jacob's lap whilst watching TV.

She did get confused when she was ushered into sitting in the middle of the sofa. Jacob on one side and the others dotted around the pair. Especially when her father came back into the room from the kitchen with a rather large white envelope in his hands.

"Ronnie, how would you feel if we said there was one last gift we have to give you?" Her father's voice rung out and she gave him a look of confusion.

"I don't understand I've received so much from you all this year there can't be anything else." Veronica pondered, and she had she wasn't asking for anything from them anyways she was just happy to have her family around her.

"This ones worth it I promise." It was her mother which answered her this time and this caused more confusion, her parents didn't often work together on a present, other than that one fluke time for Bella's 18th they hadn't ever gone in together on a gift. Rather she could only watch as her father approached her slowly the large envelope in his hands.

"We've been working on this one for a while now, we just had to wait for the finishing touches." Charlie added as he passed the large white envelope over before taking a seat on the edge of the couch.

Veronica looked down at the envelope and back up to see everyone's eager eyes upon her following her every action and waiting to gauge her reaction. Feeling a building pressure she conformed going to open the sealing. The envelope wasn't thick suggesting there was something massive or heavy inside and this was confirmed when she could only feel the one document inside. It felt and appeared to be only one page and therefore she pulled it out slowly.

"Read it aloud Ronnie." Charlie encouraged his daughter.

"Certificate of Adoption, This document officially states that Matthew James Black has been successfully adopted into the Black family by Veronica Jane Swan and Jacob Ephraim Black on December 1st 2007." Veronica barely managed to get the words out before she was in tears, these were tears of pure joy.

"He's ours, he's finally ours." She cried out before turning to tackle Jacob in a hug both young teens were crying at this point even if one of them knew about the whole ordeal.
