Chapter 9.
Natasha worked efficiently on her paper but was coming up with many problems. First and foremost she couldn't get her computer to actually move. It was frozen. To say she was frustrated was a huge understatement. She roughly hit the computer keys trying to get it to type again but it was no use.
"Careful there, those are expensive cameras," Steve said looking up from his book to see the frustrated redhead.
"Well, you would think that if they were so expensive than they would actually work." She muttered to him.
"They do work. If you do it right." Steve said with a smirk. Natasha sent him a very annoyed look. "You know I actually know how to fix those right?" He said and Natasha looked up at him with shock.
"Why didn't you say anything Rogers!" She asked raising her voice, causing her to get looks from an older woman who was in the library. "Sorry." She muttered. Steve laughed.
"You never asked." He shrugged and he stood up and walked over to where Natasha was sitting. He looked at the computer. "Did you try turning it off and then back on? It always works like a charm." He said. Natasha was holding her breath because Steve was standing very close to her. Steve wasn't really looking for an answer to his question so he didn't notice her change in emotion. "See there you go, Good as new." He smiled.
"You are a lifesaver!" She smiled as her paper popped back up on the screen. Steve smiled and looked at the screen. He started reading the top line of the report and frowned.
Anthony 'Tony' Stark lets out the truth about his companies new campain strategy.
Natasha saw him reading and quickly scrolled down to the bottom of the page where there was only a blank white screen.
"You are writing a report on Tony Stark? You are a reporter?" He asked confused. "I have never seen your name on anything I have read," Steve said. Natasha's heart started to race.
"Maybe you are just reading the wrong things." She suggested hoping he would let it go.
"What magazine do you work for? I would love to read some stuff." He said with a charming smile.
"I actually don't work for a specific magazine. You can find my stuff in a lot of stuff. People contact me if they want an article. Or I write one and send it off to a few people and whoever pays the most can have it."
"If you work for basically all them then why aren't you more well known. Because no offense people aren't lining up to meet you." He said curiously.
"I am an anonymous writer. meaning no one sees my face. and no one knows my name. I have a code name that I go by." She explained. "I just would hate the publicity."
"Well as long as you aren't the one horrible person everyone is always talking about." Steve joked. Natasha frowned. She was afraid to know who he was talking about.
"What are you talking about?" she asked calmly as he stepped away from her.
"What's her name... oh yeah the black widow. I think she is a horrible person." Steve said. "People say she used her looks to get close to people and then suddenly they are on the front page of every news article in town. Yet no one knows who she is because she usually makes her interviews in the middle of everyone else's yet manages to get better information or she uses their drunken state against them. It is sick." Steve shook his head. "What kind of person does that."
"You seem to really hate this Black Widow," Natasha said. Her voice gave no indication of sadness but her eyes were another story.
"I don't hate her. But it's wrong to use people like that. Even if it is for money. Yes, I know people may be bad but no one deserves to be lied to and tricked. I would never want that." He shook his head in disappointment. "I am glad there are writers like you out there. Honest reporters." He smiled. Before Natasha could even say another word the older lady walked up to them.
"Excuse me but I am trying to focus if you can just keep it down please." She asked and the two nodded.
"my bad," Steve said. He turned back to Natasha who was just reviving herself from deep thought. "Well, I will let you get back to it. And don't forget to send me a copy of your article. I would love to hear your thoughts on Tony."
"Sure thing Rogers." She said with a sad smile, but Steve being the clueless man he is didn't notice. he went back to work as Natasha sat there with one thing on her mind. Steve Rogers hated her.
But there was nothing she could do about that. She needed the money she was getting close to renting time and she couldn't move anywhere else. So she did what any sane person would do. She pushed it off. She finished the article. But even writing the article she only heard Steves words at the back of her head.
"I am glad you are out there. An honest writer."
Was she honest?
