Twilight Princess: Chapter 17

Shadow's pov

I looked upon the boss door. The giant chains holding the lock up over the ancient looking door.  I watched Link insert the key and the lock fell along with the chains.  Link and I pushed the door up then walked in after Link with Kairi next to me.  The large room was dark, and dusty. Some of the blocks used in the flooring were pointing upwards or out of place.

"It's old..like it hasn't been used in years..even smells old." Kairi mentioned.

"You can smell when something is old?" I asked raising an eyebrow.

"Well I mainly smell the dust and some sand. However, the dust gives it away."

As we walked in further I could see giant bones down in the sand.  I followed a path to them and the other two followed.

"Is that the boss?" Link asked.

"Probably.."

It was suspicious how it was just laying there. It was only bones. They were large bones, but still. The large skull had two long horns one each on its head.  You could see part of its spine over the head meaning it must have been bent and curved.  On my left side a large bony hand was on top of the sand with its arm hidden half way in the sand.  As we got closer we saw some rods stabbed in the head.  Kairi crouched down in front of it examining it on the edge of the path.

"I wonder what creature it was.." She mumbled.

As she did Zant appeared out of no where on top of the creature's skull.   I quickly pulled her upwards by her arm toward me.  As she finally caught sight of Zant I could hear a loud growling from her.  Her eyes was focused on him and her whole body tensed.  I released her arm and she got her sword out along with Link.

"Look master they're still alive~"

Dark Link stepped out from behind Zant. His red eyes glowing in amusement.

"Indeed..They still live...How astonishing..No wonder some call you hero..And the triator lives as well..seems I will have to get rid of you a different way..I know the heroine would live because of the tri force, but this is truly a bittersweet reunion..Truly! For I fear this will be the last time I see you alive. Dark..you will stay put to deal with the traitor."

"Of course master~."

Zant stuck his scrawny hands out of his sleeves putting them together and summoning a sword.  He then stuck it into the creature's forehead.  The creature glowed red with the twilight pattern waving through it.  With that Zant turned around and teleported away.  It was only seconds when the ground began to shake, and creature's eyes turned red.  It raised its head up pulling half of its body out of the sand.  We could see both arms, both hands, rib cage, and its spine.  Throwing its head back then forward it let our an ear piercing roar.   Dark jumped off its head and lunged at me with his sword ready. I barley avoided his  sword as I jumped back. My clothing got cut, but didn't cut any skin.  I released my wings and fought against him.

Kairi's pov

I turned my head toward Dark and Shadow fighting.  Turning my head toward the creature I ran to the sand that surrounded it.

"Kairi what are you doing?!" Link yelled.

I jumped onto the sand and made it rise up. I looked around on the creature for a weak spot, but before i could find one the creature threw me off by hitting me with its hand. Before I fell into the sand Link caught me.  He was riding on the spinner he had gotten after defeating another skull creature that was like a ghost.

"You have to be alert!" Link scolded.

"I know..I was trying to find a weakness."

I didn't pay attention to him as I talked to him.  I squinted at the creatures spine noticing some black smoke coming out from the bottom of it..

"Link try and get closer to its spine."

"I'll try."

I noticed something coming at us out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head noticing the creature swinging its hand at us.  I used the sand to create a barrier making the hand crash into it.  As we got closer to the spine I noticed some cracks on it.

"That's got to be its weak spot!" I told Link.

I jumped off landing on the sand and blocked its hand once again.

"Link go after it!" I shouted.

While I kept the creature's hand distracted Link used his new weapon to glide across the sand heading toward the creature's spine. I could also hear the fight between Shadow and Dark link.

"You were always weak!" Dark link shouted.

"You say that because I left! I have found new friends and my purpose is stronger then ever!" Shadow retorted.

However, I shouldn't have let that be my focus.   Before I knew it the creature's hand swatted me off the sand I was using to float on.   Landing in the sand below I coughed before being picked up.  Turning my head the creature had me in its giant, bony clutch.  There was no flesh to bite into so biting it was out of the question.  I wriggled trying to get one of my arms free to grab my sword.

"Kairi!"

My ear twitched hearing Link's voice to my left side.

"Ah what a good leviathan~. You caught  one of them." Dark link complimented.

"Let her go dammit!" Shadow shouted.

I could feel the hollow fingers clutch around me tighter. I let out a gasp in pain.

"Don't squish her~ We need her alive big boy." Dark Link said.

I wiggled my hand and managed to get it out.  I calmly let out a deep breath as I had the sand rise to where I was.  I had the sand slip into the joints of the creatures fingers of its hand. My next command was having the sand push to make the fingers release me.  I jumped onto a pile of sand that was right underneath me.

"Good job kairi!" Link complimented.

"Tch! How the hell do you know how to manipulate sand?!" Dark Link asked.

I used the sand to get me away from the creature. I looked at Dark link with a straight face.

"I'm the descendant of the heroine..of course I know how too!" I snickered with a smirk.

"Don't turn your back on me!" Shadow shouted.

Dark Link was thrown back with a massive dark beam produced by Shadow. Turning my attention back to Link he couldn't get close to the creature's spine anymore.  These black soldier's began to rise from the sand protecting the creature.

"Hang on Link I got this!"

I had the sand rise over  the soldier's pulling them back into the sand giving link the advantage.  By now the creature had to hold itself up by its hands and arms.  Part of its spine had been destroyed by link using his spinner.  The creature began to shoot out this crimson red breath.  I managed to get a sand wall up, but couldn't focus on covering up the soldiers. Link had to retreat back up to the track that allowed him to circle the room because he couldn't get close enough to the spine.  I rose a large amount of sand and shot it at the creature's mouth, and then I sunk the dead beings surrounding the spine.   I was hoping that would give Link enough time to finish the job.

"Link go for it!"

"Right!"

Going for the spine he tore away at the last bit.  The creature let out a roar of pain.  Its arms flailing as it tried to keep itself up, but the effort was wasted.  The skeleton of the creature fell back into the sand.  My eyes went up to its head and I watched the red light that filled the socket of the eye slowly dim until it was completely gone.   With that it's body sunk into sand and the sand followed after. The area that was filled with sand was completely gone and on the bottom the creature's head was all that was left.

"Tch..fine~ I will fall back for now..but I will always be in the darkness..so don't think I will be gone permanently." I heard dark link preached to everyone.

His words echoed in the room as he vanished laughing menacingly.  I let out a deep sigh of relief.  Using all that power I had during the fight wore me out.  The sand that carried me quickly lowered me to the area where the head laid.  I noticed before it lowered me down I saw a similar place we had seen before where the spinner fit.  Link knew it too. I stepped onto the floor and watched as Link began to spin and we rose into the air.  The small platform leveled with the rest of the arena of the room.

"There's the door!" I pointed.

I ran over to the edge and waited for some sort of bridge to come out for us to cross over, but it didn't. Link walked over just as puzzled as I was. I could hear something behind us. My ears twitched and my head jerked to the floating head just feet away from us..

"Kairi, Link! Watch out!"  I heard Shadow cry out.

Out of the corner of my eye I could see him flying to us, he was still a distance away and before we knew it the head had knocked Link and I over the edge.  I felt link wrap his arms around me putting my back to his chest.  I heard the thud of our bodies hitting the floor.  Link groaned in pain as I did, however he took my body and the floor at once.  I winced slightly and got up crouching by him.

"You okay?" I asked him.

I could see the pain in his face. He let out a deep sigh and sat up.

"Yeah, I'm fine. You're okay right?"

Looking at my face I shook my head to reassure him.

"Using my power took a toll on my body though..I'm  quite exhausted..."

"The battle isn't over yet."

Turning my head I saw Shadow land by us.

"Right..that head is still active.."

I stood up helping Link up.

"You can use the spinner to go on those railings! Get to the level the head is at!" I informed him pointing to the railings on the platform that stood in the middle of the room that we fell off of.

"Let's hurry and finish this Link." Shadow ordered.

Link nodded, got the spinner out and went up to the railings and soon vanished from sight.

"I'll carry you in my arms and be Link's backup." Shadow said.

"Sounds good." I replied.

Shadow picked me up bridal style, expanded his wings and flew up going in the direction Link went. It felt like hours went by as we fought against the head.  Link would strike it with the spinner while dodging the fireballs it would create.  Shadow would manage to negate the fireballs with his own dark balls of magic.  When Link knocked it own all three of us would attack the black magic sword that gave the head life.  With a final strike to the sword the head roared and floated upwards then came crashing onto the ground and turned into black particles.  Shadow floated up with me and we landed on top of the platform.  The black magic sword flew up toward us sticking into the ground and turned to black particles vanishing into thin air.  Link joined us just seconds after we landed.  We all faced the door and a bridge came toward us from the other side.   The door rose slowly upward and I began walking toward it with the others behind me.

"The mirror of twilight should be through there." I said.

We walked up stairs and through hallways until we came to a large clearing. It was like being in a Colosseum. I could see four large chains hanging from pillars outside of the wall.  In the middle a woman holding fire in her hands was surrounded by a large snake that was swirled around her.

"Where's the mirror at?" Shadow pondered looking around.

"I'm sure if we look around we will find it.." I reassured him.

Link walked ahead of us toward the statue of the woman and snake. I followed, but before we could get any closer more shadow beings fell through a portal and we were fenced in.  After defeating all of them I noticed on the snake the same railing that was inside the temple.  I showed it to Link and he instantly got the spinner out and went all the way to the top. Moments later the chains began to move. They rattled as they pulled something up. The sand fell as the chains pulled up a huge slab that was buried in the ground behind the statue. As the chains pulled the slab higher and higher the statue with the woman lowered into the sand.  Chains hanged off of the slab as they wrapped around it.  A pedestal rose behind link that was now on the same level as us.  Midna emerged from my shadow and went to the pedestal that had something on top of it.  It looked like something that should hold a circular object. I could make out a fragment of something on it. I could hear midna gasp in surprise and I knew something wasn't good.  I walked over to it and went up the stairs leading to it.  Short chains hanged loosely from the sides of it as it stood there with one part of what it was suppose to hold.

'Was that suppose to hold the mirror? But there's only a fragment..'

Midna was on her knees in front of it looking at the ground as if defeated.  I crouched down onto one knee and put a hand on her small back.  I felt pity for her. The only way to her home was shattered. I didn't know how I could understand how she felt.    I could hear some moaning and I looked upwards.  On top of the pillars strange, white ghost like figures stood there each on a pillar that had a specific symbol.

"What the hell.." Shadow mumbled, but was loud enough for me to hear it since I had better hearing.

"Dark entities lurks in the twilight...They house an evil power...You all who are guided by fate..You who possess the crests of the goddesses..Hear us." One spoke.

"At the command of the goddesses, we sages have guarded the Mirror of Twilight  since ancient times." A different one informed us.

"You seek it..but the Mirror of Twilight has been fragmented by a mighty magic."  The one next to it told us.

"That magic  is a dark power that only he possess..the other one..has power even greater then that..but was not the one responsible for breaking it.."

As that figure stopped talking another spoke and a vision came to my head. It was dark and fire was in the background. Using that light I could see a man on top of a black horse, but any other detail wasn't very visible besides the silhouette and the horses evil, red, glowing eye.

"His name is..Ganondorf. He was the leader  of a band of thieves  who invaded Hyrule  in the hopes of establishing dominion over the sacred realm. He was known as a demon thief, en evil magic wielder renowned for his ruthlessness..But he was blind... In all of his fury and might, he was blind to any danger, and thus was to be exposed, subdued, and brought to justice."

It went dark and as the white figure kept talking on the scenery switched.  It was the same place we were at.  the slab has lowered to the ground, but the chains that wrapped around it like it did in the present weren't there.  However, the same man that was on top of the horse stood there bound to the slab with chains attached to his wrists that also attached to the rock slab.  His head hung low and those same white figures stood in  front of him, but there was six instead of five.  The Colosseum  looked better then it did in the present time.  We definitely went back in time in the this vision since the place looked like it was just built.  I looked at the pedestal that was suppose to have the mirror indeed was holding the completed mirror.  I turned my attention back to the figure that was on trial and listened on. The man rose his head glaring menacingly at the six figures standing in front of him.  A large white sword rose and struck him in the stomach. It was a critical hit and should have ended the man. His head hung low as if he did pass, but I could still hear his breathing.  He soon clenched his hands into fists, and I noticed a familiar glow on top of his left hand.

"Yet.."

Suddenly he jerked upwards and pulled against the chains with new found strength.  He first broke the one holding his left hand.

"By some divine prank, he, too, had been blessed with the chosen powers of the gods."

After releasing his right hand, in a single movement destroyed one of the white figures.  He breathed heavily like a beast and smiled evilly.   The others coward as he pulled the large white sword out of his now wounded stomach.  He cackled in victory, or so he thought he won. the figures all rose their hands toward the mirror causing it to activate. It tilted slightly upwards, glowed white, and the symbols and patterns jumped off it as if it was 3-D.  The same symbols showed on the rock slab and the evil man couldn't control his body.   I recognized some of the symbols I had seen on the walls of twilight in our world. He jerked around until his hand let go of the sword and it vanished into the portal created on the rock slab.  Eventually he too froze, and turned into particles following the sword.   After that the portal vanished and the mirror ceased its glowing.  The five figures surrounded the mask of their fallen comrade and moaned in grief. The vision ended and I was back in my time.  The figures had their faces covered as they remembered the horrible event that took place long ago.

"His  abiding hatred and lust for power turned into purest malice.."

"Perhaps that evil power has been passed onto Zant.."

"You're now just figuring out where Zant got that power? It's far too late.." Midna spoke out.

I looked at the grieving creature. She was sitting in the frame leaning against the piece of the mirror that was held there.  Her legs bent toward her and she wrapped her arms around them. Her sight was at the ground. I knew she was still upset about this. I could tell by her tone and her body language.

"Only the true leader of the Twili can utterly destroy the mirror of Twilight..so Zant could merely break it into pieces..Once broken by magic, the Mirror of Twilight became fragments,  which even now lie hidden across the land of Hyrule.." One of the white sages said.

"One is in the snowy heights.."

"One is in an ancient grove.."

"And one is in the heavens.."

I could feel Midna next to me as she placed her small hands on my right shoulder.  My eyes shifted from her back to the sages.  I could tell her focus was directly on them.

"You who have been sent by the goddesses..You should be able to gather the three pieces..But you must be prepared, for a dangerous power resides in those fragments.."

"What about the other evil being you spoke of? You haven't explained anything about them. You said they had greater power then Ganondorf..." I mentioned.

"Ah yes...You the new heroine possesses half of the tri force of love..."  One spoke.

"I do. My sister has the other half."

"This other being that was banished to the sacred realm is a goddesses her self.. She-"

"Wait..hold on! A goddesses can be banished? How is that even possible if she has great power?" Shadow interrupted.

I nudged him in the shoulder and glared at him letting him know to keep quiet.

"The goddesses that was banished to the sacred realm was Cerin..She wanted to take the tri force of love and make those see that love can turn into hatred..She was jealous of her sister for being able to have the tri force of love instead of her. She tried to steal it so with that action was considered a traitor by her fellow goddesses. We believe she still lingers in the sacred realm waiting for her chance to escape and engulf the world into darkness and hatred.."

"I see..I remember having a dream about the incident taking place.."I mumbled.

The five sages vanished and left us four there in the dark of night.

"I haven't heard of a goddesses being banished to the sacred realm..this is all new information to me.." Midna spoke up.

"I wonder if she really just wanted to be love and felt that having the tri force of love would fix it.." I suggested.

"We won't know endless she told us herself..however she for now is considered a traitor." Link said.

"You mentioned you had a dream about it Kairi?" Shadow asked.

I looked at him and blinked a few times in a row in surprise..

'He heard me?'

"Don't think you were that quiet. The others may have not heard you, but I did. I pay attention to everything you do." He snickered slightly.

I sighed and rubbed the back  of my head.

"I did..I had a dream of four beings standing before another chained to the similar slab we see here before us. They mentioned her action and her name. I had a feeling  was seeing a vision.  I could feel the hatred come off of Cerin as she was surrounded by the others..but I also felt some loneliness. The action she did wasn't right, but I think she just wanted love.." I explained.

"Well we might have two beings to fight when we reach the twilight realm." Link brought up.

"If she is there, I might be able to sense where she is." I said.

"I haven't heard of her in the twilight realm, or of someone like that causing trouble.." Midna mentioned.

"It is possible we could run into her when we go." Shadow brought up again.

"We still have three other fragments to find. We should head back to Kakariko village  and rest up.  This day and all the fighting has taken a toll on all of us." Link said.

"I am definitely ready for a good night sleep." I yawned and relaxed my muscles.

"At least we can warp out from here and come back whenever we feel like it. " Midna said.

Link and I changed into our wolf forms. Shadow turned into an imp and sat on top of Link's back.  All three of us began to dissolve into particles with Midna right behind us and we went back to Kakariko village.
