the great outdoors
As Zelda walked through the forest, she plucked a silent princess that grew tall above the ground. She placed it behind her ear, her blonde ponytail blowing softly in the wind. She smiled as she looked up toward the sky, marveling at the treetops and the sunlight that crept through the leaves. She lowered her head, turning behind her. She held her hands behind her back. "How much longer until we're there?"
Link chuckled, catching up to Zelda with a quick jog. "We're almost there, I promise. You're going to have to close your eyes soon, though."
Zelda nodded, releasing her hands, sticking out her right arm in front of her. She waited for Link to take it. As soon as he did, she began skipping like a child. Her heart was pounding with excitement, and her smile was as wide as ever. She had never felt happier than she did now.
Birds chirped throughout the forest, and Zelda giggled as if she could understand what they were saying. Two squirrels chased one another up a tree, as if they were playing a game of tag. Zelda looked off to her left, down the short cliff of the hill, and gasped. She froze, squeezing Link's hand. With her other, she pointed in the direction she was staring. "Look!" she gasped quietly. "Look, Link!"
Across the river stood a buck, a doe, and a baby fawn. They seemed to stare right back at the two.
Zelda waved to them. "They're so cute! And, wow, look how big that buck's rack is." She looked up at Link and laughed. "Wouldn't wanna mess with him."
Link marveled at Zelda's beauty. As she stared at the family of deer, he stared at her sweet and calm expression. Her lips curled into a soft smile, and her hair danced in the forest breeze. A few summer freckles popped up upon her cheeks, and blush painted her face lightly. Her brilliant blue eyes shone like liquid sapphire in the beams of sunlight escaping through the treetops.
She turned to him. "Something the matter?" she asked, nervousness appearing in her tone. Her smile disappeared.
Link placed a kiss on Zelda's forehead. "Everything is perfect, don't worry."
Zelda nodded, her smile returning as she tugged on Link's hand, continuing onward, deeper into the forest.
A fork in the path appeared, with a large oak tree in the middle. Link pulled a pocket knife from his bag that he carried, flipping it open. He carved a heart, initialing it with Z+L. Zelda's blush grew as she admired the small engraving.
"Which way from here?" Zelda asked, breaking the silence between the two at the moment.
"Right," Link assured.
"Right is always the right way to go," Zelda smiled, pulling Link along beside her. "At least, that's what my dad has always told me."
"Wise man," Link winked. "It should be just up ahead."
"What even is this special place you're talking about?" Zelda wondered aloud, looking up at Link with curiosity.
"We'll be there soon enough," Link smiled. "You're just going to have to wait a little while longer." He rolled his eyes. "Gee, Zel. You're so impatient."
Zelda stuck out her bottom lip, pouting. "Okay " she said. She stuck out her tongue, and the two laughed.
They walked, hand-in-hand, for another ten minutes, admiring the beauty of the forest as they walked. Every now and then, Link would steal a glance at Zelda, each time more enthralled by the girl beside him than the last. Her presence was wonderful, and she looked almost angelic.
"You know," Zelda began softly, "ever since we started hanging out more, I... don't feel so alone anymore." Her grip on Link's hand began to loosen.
Link squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You'll never be alone again, I promise."
Zelda smiled sadly. "Ever since dad passed away a month ago, I've just felt so lost." She looked up at Link. "But then you found me, and every day with you has just been one adventure after the other."
Link enveloped Zelda in a hug then, stopping them in their tracks. She giggled in his chest, looking up at him. Link looked down at her. "We're almost here now. Close your eyes."
Zelda could not contain her laughter as she closed her eyes. Her right eye peeked open.
"No peeking!" Link scolded with a laugh. He placed his hands in front of her eyes, nudging her forward.
"Don't let me fall!" Zelda said, one hand out in front of her while the other was resting upon Link's hands.
"It's only a bit further..." Link trailed off, poking his head out to the side. He smiled.
Zelda stopped after feeling Link's movements slow. Her smile faded and her breathing slowed a bit. "Are we here?" she asked quietly.
Link nodded, although she could not see. He lifted his hands from her eyes.
Zelda's mouth fell open as her hands covered her mouth in shock.
Only about fifty feet in front of her sat a large picnic blanket in a wide clearing. Atop the blanket were two plates, utensils, and a basket holding all kinds of foods. Behind the scene sat another large tree, holding a small wooden swing on one of its sturdy branches. A few feet away from the picnic blanket was another blanket, however, it looked to be thick and warm. Two pink pillows laid at the top, along with two fuzzy blankets.
Zelda turned to Link, her eyes watering. "No one has ever done something like this for me before." She smiled, beginning to walk toward the area. She soon broke into a run, spinning in the breeze, giggling uncontrollably.
Link chased after her, laughing. "I take it you like it?" he asked breathlessly as he ran.
Zelda's smile seemed to reflect the light of the sun as she turned back at him. "I love you!"
Those three words fueled Link's speed even more. He chased after Zelda until he caught up to her completely. He dove after her, bringing the two down to the thick blanket underneath of the thick oak tree off to the side of the picnic tree. Cupping her face in his hands, he kissed her then, unable to control his lips from curling into a smile while doing so.
Zelda pulled away after a few seconds, laughing. "This is the best surprise I've ever gotten," she whispered, pecking his check quickly. "Thank you, a million times."
