Arc 1: Working Together

"Hey! Where are you going?" Oni yelled, at the grumpy Rion, who was storming off, "Hey jerk! I'm talking to you!"

"Well go talk to someone else," huffed Rion as he continued to walk through the forest, "I don't have time for your whining."

Oni rushed ahead of Rion stopping him from proceeding, "Look, as much as I hate it, you and I are partners in this."

"Me? Partnered with you?" laughed Rion, "I'd rather get eaten by Grimm, than be partnered with the likes of you."

"This jerk!" thought Oni as she glared at him, "He has no idea who I am, or what I'm capable of, and he already thinks he's better than me! What gives him the right to tell someone if they are good enough or not!"

Rion went to continue to walk, but Oni grabbed his arm. Rion quickly swatted her away, as the two glared at each other until Oni broke the silence, "Like it or not, if you plan to get into this school, you need to follow the rules Ozpin has given us. 'First person you make eye contact with after landing will be your partner.' Now I highly doubt, the high and mighty Rion Dark came all the way from Atlas just to go home now."

Rion huffed, as if he admitted defeat, "Fine, but let's get one thing straight. You and I are not friends, after all this is over, Ozpin will see that you and I are not fit partners."

Oni growled, "Let's just get the relics and be done with it. I don't want to be hanging out in this forest after dark."

As the two began walking through the forest, Oni was puzzled, "I can't believe that worked. For the first time since I met this guy, I won my argument. But I'm not sure where that came from. I fully planned on fighting with him until my face turned blue, but when I opened my mouth it was as if someone else spoke for me. I won my case and he's not running away from me anymore at least. I'll leave it at that for now."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This could be worse," thought Ki, as she observed her new partner, Daku, "She seemed nervous when I found her. The girl's been nothing but smiles after I showed myself. Daku isn't even bothered by the fact I'm a faunes. So as far as partners go, this isn't terrible. There's just one thing I don't understand."

"I can see the ruins from here!" cheered Daku as she pointed to the ruins down below from the cliff they were standing on, "We just need to find a way down, and we'll be there in no time!"

As Daku began to look for a way down, Ki asked, "Hey, earlier why didn't you defend yourself?"

"What do you mean?" asked Daku, averting her eyes, trying to avoid the conversation.

"Don't play dumb," said Ki, "You had plenty of time to fight back, but you hesitated. If I hadn't shown up you'd be Grimm chow. So what gives?"

The question seemed to make her uncomfortable as Daku began to fidget with her hands. Ki was going to push for an answer, but then Daku said, "Be...because I...I froze...I'm not used to fighting..."

"Come again?" asked Ki, stunned by the answer, "What do you mean you're not used to fighting?"

Daku sheepishly explained, "Before I came here, my family was murdered. I wanted to learn how to fight to protect others from being taken from their families. But when it comes to hurting others, I freeze, thinking about the pain I'm about to cause them. I'm sorry, you must think I'm going to be such a burden to you now. But I promise, I'll do whatever I can so that you can pass, I won't let myself hold you back."

"What if you have to fight Grimm, in order to keep going?" asked Ki, "Can I rely on you in a fight?"

"I'm not much of a fighter," muttered Daku, making Ki roll her eyes and walk away, "But if it's between protecting you or doing nothing, I'd choose you! I can be your shield!"

Ki looked back at the once trembling girl and saw in her eyes how determined she was. Daku didn't care that Ki was a faunes and didn't care that she could get hurt out here. Normally Ki wouldn't give a coward like this the time of day, but looking in her eyes Ki knew Daku was telling the truth.

"Okay," nodded Ki, "I'm gonna hold you to that. For now, let's leave the fighting to me if it comes down to it. But we should try and avoid battle if we can help it, alright?"

Daku nodded, as the two began looking for a way down.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Of all the people I could be stuck with," grumbled Rion as he and Oni continued through the forest. Oni tried to lead the way, but continued to lead them to dead ends or in circles. Rion was starting to lose his patience.

"It's this way. I'm sure of it this time!" said Oni, as she began to walk in a new direction.

"You have no idea where we are, do you?" asked Rion.

"Of course I do!" snapped Oni.

"Then how far away are the ruins?" Rion asked with a smug expression.

"It's uh, um..." Oni grew frustrated trying to come up with something.

"Like I said you're lost," sighed Rion as he began to look around.

"At least I'm trying to find a way there!" snapped Oni, "What are you doing?"

"Looking for a marker to at least find where we are," explained Rion as he then looked up to see a tall tree, "We might be able to see the ruins from up there. I'm too heavy for the branches to get up there."

"I can get up there in no time," smirked Oni as she walked over to the tree.

"Just try and actually look for the ruins and stop trying to impress me," huffed Rion, "Cause at this point the only that's impressed me is your ability to get lost."

"Just shut up jerk," growled Oni, "I'll be back once I see the ruins."

Oni gracefully jumped from branch to branch like she was some kind of ninja. Rion huffed again as he looked around the forest. It had been quiet since they had landed. Not a single Grimm had come near them yet, which was odd. Almost made Rion wonder if Oni was to thank for that. Just as Rion was about to relax, shuffling was heard in the nearby bushes. Rion placed his hand over his broadsword ready to fight. In the bushes, Rion could see a pair of yellow cat-like eyes staring him down. Then in a flash, a figure leaped from the bushes. Rion quickly drew his sword to defend himself, but nothing made contact with his sword. Then suddenly he felt a swift kick from behind. The kick almost knocked him to the ground, but Rion rolled to a kneeling position to face his opponent. To his surprise, it was a faunes girl.

The girl had tan skin, with long blonde hair. Along with her human ears, the girl had lion-like ears atop her head. She also had a wool like shirt and armbands. The girl wore a combat wool shirt with a lioness tail. She also wore a gold headpiece with a red gem at the center. The faunes girl gave a cat-like grin at Rion, as she placed her broadsword over her shoulder.

"I don't remember you being so slow," laughed the girl.

"And I can't say I remember you at all," growled Rion, standing back up, "But whoever you are, why are you attacking me instead of looking for the ruins like we're supposed to be doing?"

"Really? You have no idea who I am? I know you're a big shot and all, but I would hope the great Rion Dark would remember who gave him that scar," said the girl as she pointed her sword at his face.

Rion touched his scar over his right eye, as images from his past flashed in his mind, of an angry girl cursing him out before seeing red, "Orion."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daku and Ki had finally found their way to the ruins, looking around they noticed the relics all arranged in a circle.

"They're chess pieces," observed Daku, as she stared at the white and black pieces, "Which one should we pick?"

"I don't really think it matters that much," said Ki, "Why don't you pick?"

Daku nodded then grabbed a black knight piece, "How about this one?"

Ki nodded, just then a noise caught her attention as she turned to face it while keeping Daku behind her.

"Well, well, well, what have we here?" said a voice, as someone came into view, "Looks to me like a little deer wandered a little far from home."

The one who was speaking had short blue silky hair with blue eyes. They had a blue shirt underneath their black jacket along with some black jeans and boots. They also had their bow at the ready while baring a devilish smirk. Then their smirk widened as they noticed Daku behind her.

"Hey Nazar, would you take a look at this," they called to their partner who just came into view, "Looks like this doe has a pet."

Their partner came into view, the boy known as Nazar had green buzzed cut hair except for a tuff that slightly covered one of his eyes. Not that you could really see his eyes thanks to his sunglasses. He wore a brown turtleneck underneath his sleeveless black jacket. Nazar also wore faded black worn-out jeans with long dark boots. Nazar didn't say a word but just stared at Daku intently as if he was trying to get a read on her.

"Ki, I have a bad feeling about them," Daku muttered as she began to shake.

"Stay calm," Ki comforted, "They are just here for their relic, we can just walk away."

"Sanir," said Nazar as he nudged towards the relic in Daku's hands.

"Well what do you know, looks like they beat us here," Sanir smirked.

"This isn't a race," said Ki as she motioned for Daku to keep moving, "We'll be on our way."

As Ki turned to leave, Daku screamed, "Ki, look out!"

Ki ducked as an arrow went flying overhead, she returned her attention to Sanir who had fired the arrow at them.

"You think I'd let my prey just walk away?" laughed Sanir as they raised another arrow, "You faunes need to be reminded of your betters."

"Let's go," said Nazar as he grabbed Sanir's wrist showing them that he had a relic, a black pawn piece.

Suddenly the ground shook, as it seemed like something was heading towards them. The trees cleared as Ki's eyes widened, "What the hell?!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oni looked over the treetops, examining the forest for any sign of the ruins. To Oni's surprise, they were actually pretty close. Smiling she began to climb down to Rion, but saw that Rion was fighting someone.

"What is he doing now?" grumbled Oni as jumped down, "I need to stop this."

Rion and the girl he was fighting were about to clash, but Oni jumped down in between them. Her partner growled at her frustrated that Oni was in the way, "What are you doing?"

"I could be asking you the same thing jerk," snapped Oni, "Who did you piss off now?"

"Step out of the way pinkie," huffed the lioness girl, "Rion and I have some unfinished business."

"Not during our initiation you don't," said Oni, "Ozpin gave us our instructions to get a relic and return."

"He also said to destroy everything in our path," smirked the faunes, "And he's in my way. Now get out of the way unless you want to join him."

"Orion!" called out a voice, "What are you doing?"

The guy had short, spiky, dirty blonde hair with purple eyes. He wore a blue long-sleeved turtleneck with a red vest over it. He also bore a metal headband with a katana on his belt.

"Come on, Pharaoh! Give me a few more minutes with him," begged Orion.

"Orion, I have the relic," said Pharaoh, as he showed them his black pawn piece, "There's no need to fight him right now. You'll have plenty of time to do that during school."

"Fine," Orion huffed but returned her sword in the sheath on her back, "But don't think this is over Rion."

"Sorry about that," apologized Pharaoh, "We'll be on our way now."

"Thanks," nodded Oni as she watched the two disappear into the forest. She then returned her attention to Rion, who seemed deep in thought about something, "Hey, you want to explain to me what just happened?"

"Nothing worth explaining," huffed Rion, "Did you find the ruins or not?"

"I did, but don't change the subject!" snapped Oni, "Is it your goal to piss off everyone you meet?"

"I don't need to explain anything to you," growled Rion, "I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to protect Ms. Schnee while she's here! Instead, I'm stuck playing babysitter to some nobody who thinks they're cut out to be something they're not!"

Suddenly the ground shook startling them. Instinctively Oni pushed Rion out of the way as a King Taijitu thrusted out of the ground hitting Oni. Oni was sent flying into the air, reacting quickly she grabbed her dual sided daggers. She jammed her blades into the snake's head to save her from the fall. The serpent tried to shake her off but to no avail. The Taijitu quickly slithered into the forest, bumping into anything that could get Oni off of her.

"This is bad!" Said Oni struggling to hang on, "This thing is heading straight towards the ruins! I've got to think of something."

Then Oni heard someone scream her name as the Grimm approached the ruins, "Oni!"

"Daku?" called out Oni as she looked to see Daku and the blonde hair girl below. Then the snake's other head lunged at Oni from behind. Just as she was about to panic, Rion jumped up and used his sword to knock the head away. Knocking the Grimm out, Rion took advantage of his time and grabbed Oni, bringing her to safety.

"Oni are you okay?" asked Daku as she and her partner ran to her side.

"I'm fine Daku," nodded Oni, as she stood up, "Time for some payback."

"Like hell you are," huffed Rion, "I'm not going to be dragged into a fight just because you have something to prove."

"You're not the only person here who can fight!" snapped Oni as the two stared each other down.

"This isn't the time for you two to fight!" snapped the blonde girl, "We need to get out of here while we can."

"Ki's right Oni," encouraged Daku, "Maybe we should--"

"You call taking a joy ride on a Taijitu, fighting?" snapped Rion, "You could have gotten yourself killed."

"I was doing fine before you intervened!" Oni growled.

"If it wasn't for me you'd be dead!" Rion argued.

"Why do you even care if I live or die?" snapped Oni, "Don't want to stain your perfect image?"

Then the King Taijitu regained consciousness as they argued. The snakes lunged at them giving them no time to dodge, Oni flinched. After a moment, Oni opened her eyes to see a black void in front of her.

"Did I die?" wondered Oni, then looked to see Daku stretching out her hands above her head, "Daku? How-"

"Where are we?" asked Rion.

"We're...still in the forest...." explained Daku, struggling to hold the barrier, "My semblance allows me to...ugh...use shadows to move objects and make shields...I've never made one this big before...I'm not sure how long I can hold it."

"Then we should take this time to figure out a game plan, quickly," urged Ki.

"Just drop the barrier and let me handle this," said Rion, sword at the ready.

"And then what?" asked Ki, "We need a plan."

"I have an idea," said Oni then looked towards Rion, "We're going to need your help." Rion huffed, before Oni continued, "Thank you..for saving my life. You were right about me trying to prove myself. I wanted to show you that I could handle myself and I know that I haven't done anything to earn your trust, but...I need you to trust me here."

After a moment Rion sighed, "You don't need to thank me, you saved me first remember? If you have a plan that could work, I'm all ears."

The two nod at each other before Oni begins explaining the plan. After a few minutes of explaining everything, Oni asks, "Everyone ready? Daku on my count, 3...2...1...NOW!"

Daku lowers the shield to reveal the angry King Taijitu, making another lunge at Daku. Oni quickly grabbed Daku out of the way, as Rion used his sword to block the blow. Ki had camouflaged herself to grab a relic for Oni and Rion. Once Ki grabbed a relic, Rion pushed the snake back. Ki handed the relic to Daku before entering the fight. Ki then had her dual bladed spear change to a sniper rifle as she shot at one of the snakes heads, getting its attention. Oni then had her dual sided daggers change into pistol mode shooting the other head. The two heads couldn't seem to decide where they wanted to go. Daku, using her semblance to move the chains on her belt, wrapped them around Rion's waist. Daku launched Rion into the air. Rion then turned the Dust dial on the hilt of his sword, landing on the fire element, engulfing his sword in flames. Shouting as he slammed down to the ground, slicing the Grimm in half.

Daku cheered, as Ki and Rion smiled at their victory, Oni smiled as she thought, "We did it!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It didn't take long for the four of them to return to Headmaster Ozpin, and once everyone else returned, the entrance ceremony began back at Beacon. Ozpin announced the official teams and team leaders. The team's pictures were shown on the projector screen as they were announced.

"Russel Thrush, Cardin Winchester, Dove Bronzewing, and Sky Lark," announced Ozpin as the four boys went on stage, "The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team CRDL, led by Cardin Winchester."

The audience clapped as the next team was called, "Jaune Arc, Lie Ren, Pyrrha Nikos, and Nora Valkyrie. The four of you retrieved the white rook pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team JNPR, led by Jaune Arc."

Nora hugged Ren, happy they were together. Then Pyrrha went to pat Jaune on the back but accidentally pushed him a little too hard knocking him to the floor. Ozpin then continued, "Blake Belladonna, Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long. The four of you retrieved the white knight pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team RWBY, led by Ruby Rose."

Yang had leapt over to hug Ruby congratulating her for becoming leader. The audience clapped as they left the stage as Ozpin called out the last two teams, "Pharaoh Kingston, Orion Hartman, Sanir Arawn, and Nazar Petra. The four of you retrieved the black pawn pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team POSN, led by Pharaoh Kingston."

Pharaoh bowed in thanks, as the crowd cheered, Sanir seemed to enjoy the spotlight as they blew kisses to the crowd as they walked off the stage, "And finally Oni Epiphany, Rion Dark, Ki Lin, and Daku Misam. The four of you retrieved the black knight pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team ORKD, led by Oni Epiphany."

"Me?" Oni thought, shocked by her appointment, she looked towards her new team seeing their reactions. Daku clapped, while wearing a big grin, Ki smiled, while Rion just nodded. Oni was doing her best not to cry in front of everyone, choking down her tears, she looked at her team and said, "I won't let you down!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was the birth of Team ORKD and the story of how they saved Remnant.
