🍃A Leaf in the Wind🍃
Korro sat in Air Temple island reading the latest newspaper at the breakfast table excitedly.
Korro: "And in the final round, The Buzzard-wasps won with a decisive knockout. What do you say we go to the arena tonight, catch a few pro bending matches along with their halftime shows?" He asked Tenzin before folding the paper up and set it onto the table.
Tenzin: "That sport is a mockery of the noble tradition of bending." He said seriously before drinking some tea.
Korro: Groans lowly before saying to Tenzin. "Come on, Tenzin, I've dreamed about seeing a pro-bending since I was a kid, and now I'm a ferry ride away from the arena." He pointed over his shoulder at the Pro bending arena.
Tenzin: "Korro, you're not here to watch that drivel. You're here to finish your Avatar training. So for the time being, I want you to remain on the island." He said calmly to the young man.
Korro: Scoffs a sigh. "Is that why you're keeping the white lotus sentries around to watch my every move?" He questioned sarcastically.
Tenzin: "Yes, in order to learn airbending, I believe you require a calm, quiet environment, free from any distractions." He explained calmly.
Korro: "All right, you're the master." He said before looking over at the pro bending arena with a far off look in his eyes.
A lemur flew by Tenzin and Korro whom was now dressed in air nomad clothes to the training area of the island.
Tenzin: "So my mother informed me that you've never been able to airbend before." He asked Korro as he sighed in disappointment.
Korro: "Yeah but I don't know why. The other elements came so easily to me. But every single time I've tried airbending-- *blows a raspberry* nothing." He said honestly while pouting.
Tenzin: "That's perfectly all right. We just need to be patient. Often the element that's the most difficult for the Avatar to master is the one most opposite to the Avatar's personality. For Aang it was earth bending." He told Korro honestly.
Korro: "Yeah, well, I'm about as opposite an airbender as you can get." He said honestly as Oogi landed in the courtyard.
Tenzin: "Let's begin your first lesson." He said as they walked up stone steps to find Jinora, Ikki and Meelo waiting for them.
Ikki: "Korro's gonna airbend! Korro's gonna airbend!" She squealed happily jumping up and down.
Korro: "What is that contraption?" He questioned looking at a stone circle filled with wooden air symbol pieces of wooden gates.
Tenzin: "A time-honored tool that teaches the most fundamental aspect of airbending. Jinora, would you like to explain this exercise?" He asked his eldest daughter.
Jinora: "The goal is to weave your way through the gates and make it to the other side without touching them." She explained to Korro.
Korro: "Seems easy enough." He said smirking thinking this was gonna be easy.
Ikki: "Jinora forgot to say you have to make it through while the gates are spinning." She said while Tenzin blasted a gust of wind at the gates making them spin around fast.
Tenzin: Holds up a bamboo leave in his fingers to demonstrate. "The key is to be like the leaf, flow with the movement of the gates. Jinora will demonstrate." He said as Jinora began moving through the gates in spiral movements. "Airbending is all about spiral movements when you meet resistance, you must be able to switch direction at a moment's notice." He explained calmly as Jinora got out then blew a new gust of wind at the gates for Korro's turn.
Korro: "Let's do this." He said seriously before running up to the gates only to get his ass kicked by the gates again and again.
Jinora: "Don't force your way through." She explained honestly.
Ikki: "Dance, dance like the wind." She said smiling.
Meelo: "Be the leaf." He said with a wind movement of his arms.
Korro tried again and again til he was nearly knocked out onto the ground in front of Tenzin and his family.
Later that night
Korro: "Airbend." He said while trying to airbend a newspaper holding Lin Beifong's picture. "What is wrong with me? Airbend!" He shouted out angrily getting frustrated by this before throwing a fire punch at the paper making it burn into ashes. "Ugh! Maybe I'm just not cut out to be an airbender, huh, Naga." He asked his polar bear dog til he heard a radio.
Shiro: "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm coming to you live from Republic City's pro-bending arena, where tonight, the best in the world continue their quest for a spot in the upcoming championship tournament. Grab your snacks and grab your kids because this next match is gonna be a doozy." He announced as Korro climbed up onto the roof where three white lotus members were at while looking at the pro bending arena across the water. "This Mako's got moxie. He advances, fires two quick shots. Yomo is hammered back to zone three. The clock is winding down, can yomo hold on? He's teetering on the edge of the ring now. The Fire Ferrets line up to strike--" The radio was unplugged as the best part was coming up by Tenzin.
Tenzin: "Korro, come down here please." He said seriously as Korro leaned over the edge of the roof freaking out of members of the white lotus then he jumped onto the ground easily.
Korro: "You shut it off at the best part, Tenzin." He said agitated.
Tenzin: "I thought I made myself clear. I don't want you listening to this distracting nonsense." He said seriously while Korro walked over towards him.
Korro: "But it's their radio. And technically, you said I couldn't watch a match. You didn't say anything about listening to one." He explained to Tenzin.
Tenzin: "You-- *groans controlling his temper* You know what I meant. Anyway, shouldn't you-- shouldn't you be in bed by now?" He asked seriously before storming off.
Next Day Early in the Morning
Korro, Jinora, Ikki and Meelo were practicing meditation in a pavilion with Tenzin but Korro was having trouble focusing on relaxing and keeping a calm mind.
Korro: "I think I'm doing it wrong." He groaned deeply into the air.
Tenzin: "There's nothing to do. Let your mind and your spirit be free, for air is the element of freedom." He said calmly as he made Korro laugh at the last word that he said. "Is something funny?"
Korro: "Yeah, you're telling me to embrace freedom, but you won't even let me listen to the radio. And forget about leaving this island." He said honestly towards Tenzin.
Tenzin: "Please, Korro. Look at Meelo, he's able to meditate peacefully." He said as Korro looked at Meelo.
Korro: "Tenzin, Meelo is actually asleep." He said seriously towards Tenzin.
Tenzin: "What? Oh, well, at least he has to relaxing part down." He said honestly before Korro moved a bit on the floor.
Korro: "Whatever. None of this airbending stuff makes any sense to me." He said seriously getting frustrated.
Tenzin: "I I know you're frustrated but these teachings will sink in over time. Then, one day, they'll just click." He said honestly before they all went back to meditation til Korro spoke up.
Korro: "Yeah, it's not sinking in yet." He said seriously before getting off of the floor of the pavilion. "I'm gonna go get a glass of lychee juice." He said before walking off with a plan forming in his head.
Later that Night
Korro waited until the white lotus sentry moved off before jumping out of his bedroom window and onto the ground quitely then ran off the edge of one of the island's cliffsides. He used his mastery over water bending to catch himself from making a huge splash sound then swam through the water as a dolphin fly with a water air pocket around his mouth and nose towards the pro bending arena. Once Korro surfaced the water's face to shot himself into a open window of the arena then bent the water from his clothes to dry them off. He walked through the building and found the pro bending gym smirking until the equipment guy spoke up.
Toza: "Hey, what are you doing in my gym?" The man asked Korro.
Korro: "Uh, I was just looking for a bathroom, and I got lost." He lied while a young man looked over at the two in the gym.
Toza: "Ah, the old "I had to pee" excuse. You know, I'm sick and tired of you kids sneaking in without paying. I'm taking you to security." He said seriously as Korro's eyes widened slightly at that word.
Korro: "No, wait." He said seriously before a new voice spoke up.
???: "There you are. I've been looking everywhere for you. It's all right, Toza. He's with me. So, you see we're together cause I invited my friend here to the match tonight." He said as Korro looked over at the guy around his age.
Toza: "Ah, I don't care what you are. I got work to do." He said seriously before the young man shook his head.
???: "Right this way, my friend." He said taking Korro into the Fire Ferrets locker room area door.
Korro: "Seriously thanks for helping me out here." He said smiling as the guy opened up the door as he heard the crowd cheering out.
???: "So, what do you think? Best seats in the house, huh?" He asked while Korro's eyes set onto a figure dancing on the pro bending court bending pure white fire with a fire ferret doing tricks around her feet.
Korro: "Whoa. This place is even more amazing than I imagined and whose that dancing on the pro bending ring?" He asked the guy beside him.
Bolin: "Name's Bolin, by the way and that's my twin sister whose dancing her name is Y/n. She got our mother's beauty." He said honestly
Korro: "Korro and that's Y/n? I've never seen a firebender with pure white flames before it's a rare color." He said honestly as he watched Y/n do backflips in the air making a fire ribbon from her toes in her dancing dress.
???: "Psst, Bolin. I told you, you have to stop bringing Y/n's crazy fan boys in here before the matches and Y/n's before match shows." He said seriously "Get him out of here."
Bolin: "Aw, come on, Mako. All right, Look, I kind of promised him that he could stay. But, man, I got a good feeling. There's something special about him, I know it and you really need to stop being over protective of N/n. You know as I do if a guy tries anything funny to her that she can beat their butts." He said honestly before walking Korro over to meet his older brother. "Come here, I want you to meet my brother Mako." He said introducing him to Korro.
Korro: "Mako? Wow, I heard you play on the radio." He said holding out his hand to him but Mako brushed him off. "Or I could meet him later." He whispered angrily.
Mako: "Come on, Bolin, we're up." He said as the platform to the ring extends out and Y/n walked up to Mako and hugged him for good luck along with Boiln as Pabu chitters in her ear.
Bolin: "Yeah, sorry about that. My brother just gets real focused before a match not to mention he's overprotective of our little sister." He said honestly towards Korro as he put on his helmet. "Okay, I gotta go. Wish me luck not that I'll need it." He said as Y/n removed her long golden silk belt from her dress.
Y/n: "Good luck Mako, Bolin. Knock them out!" She yelled out happily before grabbing a towel to wipe sweat off her neck and pat dried her face. "Hey, there again. Nice to see you, Korro." She said honestly before sitting down on the stone bench as they watched the match begin.
Korro & Y/n: "Come on, Ferrets!" They both cheered out until they both saw Mako was alone with the Tiger-dillo team. "Come on, Mako make them tired!" Y/n shouted out loud as the Fire Ferrets won their first season. "Yes! That's my brothers! Go, Fire Ferrets! Whoo!" Y/n cheered out hugging Korro tightly before realizing what she had just done and let him go.
Bolin: "Whoo-hoo! Yes! One more win and we're in the championship tournament." He said before bringing Y/n into a platypus bear hug. "Great fire dancing, N/n. *whispers in her ear* I think you got a new admirer here." He pointed over at Korro as Y/n's eyes widened slightly before blushing.
Mako: "You did more harm than good out there, Hasook. You almost cost us the match." He lectured his teammate.
Hasook: "We won, didn't we? Get off my case, pal." He said storming out of the locker room.
Mako: "Useless." He groaned slightly before Y/n jumped onto his back. "Come on, Y/n get off of me." He said smiling slightly.
Y/n: "Mhmm, Nope mister grumpy hotpants. Mako, you need to calm your inner flames again." She said honestly before hopping down to let her white fire show lightly on her palms and slowly moved them near Mako's back. "I can't keep unblocking your chi when you keep getting angry you know, that travel to the fire sages when I was thirteen wasn't a waste thankfully." She said honestly before sighing softly then made her flames evaporated.
Korro: "You guys were incredible out there. Especially you, Mr. Hat trick." He said towards Mako as Y/n looked over at him.
Mako: "Oh, you're still here?" He asked sarcastically before walking over to his locker. "Thanks, Y/n." He said towards his little sister.
Korro: "Oh, you're still a jerk? Anyway... I've been immersed in bending my entire life. But I've never learned how to move like that. It's like there's a whole new style here. Think you can show me a few tricks, Bolin and Y/n?" He asked as Y/n and Boiln looked at each other.
Bolin: "Absolutely. Yeah, I can show you the basics. I'm just not sure how my earthbending would translate to your waterbending, but we'll figure it out." He said honestly
Y/n: "I don't mind teaching you what I learned from the fire sages along with the moves I picked up from my travels." She said honestly smiling.
Korro: "Won't be a problem. I'm actually Earthbender." He said cockily making Y/n laugh slightly at Boiln rushed apologies.
Boiln: "I'm sorry, no, no, I didn't mean to assume. 'Cause I-- you know, i was just figuring-- with your water tribe get up, that you are a water tribe guy." He said honestly while Y/n placed her hands over her lips laughing lightly.
Korro: "Nope, you're right. I'm a waterbender. And a firebender." He said as Y/n instantly knew whom he was thanks to the lessons with the fire sages in the fire nation.
Bolin: "Mm. Mm-hmm. I'm very confused right now." He said honestly before Mako spoke up.
Mako: "You're the Avatar, and I'm an idiot." He said as Y/n spoke up after him.
Y/n: "Both are true. Come on, Korro let's head to the gym so Bo can show you some moves with earth bending and I'll show you how I bend when Mako has to sit out from a match." She said honestly as Boiln fan boyed at Korro.
When Mako and Bolin when upstairs after Bolin trained Korro whom looked confused til Y/n explained that they lived together in the attic sure it wasn't the best but it had great views.
Y/n: "Okay, the trick to fire healing and massage is all about calming your inner flames. Breathing is a must but while fire is life and destruction, you must remember that it's alive. My white fire is rare and means purity while with the fire sages in the fire nation I learned all the Great General Iroh's teachings on fire and spiritual enlightenment. Even though I'm still a hothead fire girl, I can be calm and serene like the flow of air or water in a stream, or even tough as the earth below our feet." She explained to Korro whom was watching her explain while being completely smitten by her.
Next Day at Air Temple Island
Korro tried the moving gates again only the lose his patience and set fire to the gates even breaking a few of them much to Tenzin's and his children shock.
Tenzin: "That was a two thousand year old historical treasure. What--" He said stammered before losing his temper. "What is wrong with you?!" He yelled at Korro.
Korro: "There's nothing wrong with me. I've been practicing just like you taught me. But it isn't sinking in, okay? It hasn't clicked like you said it would!" He yelled back at Tenzin.
Tenzin: "Korro, this isn't something you can force. If you would only listen to me." He said calming down
Korro: "I have been! But you know what I think? Maybe the problem isn't me. Maybe the reason I haven't learned to airbending yet is because you're a terrible teacher!" He shouted out loud before storming off.
Later that night Pema set the table for dinner happily.
Pema: "Okay, everyone here? Wait, where's Korro?" She asked her husband.
Tenzin: "Honestly, Pema, I am at my wit's end with that boy. I--I don't know how to get through to him." He said honestly before Pema placed her hand onto his shoulder.
Pema: "Dear, the best thing you can do right now is to give Korro some space." She said honestly while Tenzin looked over at Jinora, Ikki and Meelo.
Tenzin: "You must promise me that your teenage years won't be like this." He asked his children.
Jinora: Moves her book down a bit slightly from her face. "I will make no such promises." She said honestly but seriously before reading again.
At the Pro Bending Arena
Korro walked into the Fire Ferrets locker room seeing Mako, Bolin and Y/n with melancholy looks on their faces.
Korro: "I didn't miss your match, did I? You guys look like you lost already." He asked as Y/n side hugged Bolin gently.
Bolin: "We might as well have." He said as Mako explained to Korro.
Mako: "Hasook's a no good no show." He said as the referee opened up the door saying to the ferrets.
Referee: "You got two minutes to come out ready to play, you're disqualified." He said seriously before closing the door.
Bolin: "Well, there goes our shot at the tournament... and the winnings." He said sadly before hugging his sister as Korro saw another team behind them.
Korro: "Can't you ask one of those guys to fill in?" He questioned as Y/n sighs softly.
Y/n: "No, the rules say you can only compete on one team. I'm back up Firebender for Mako but not a waterbender for our team." She said honestly before Korro got an idea.
Korro: "Well, then... How about me? I'm a top-notch waterbender, if I do say so myself." He bragged honestly smiling widely.
Bolin: "But your the Avatar. Isn't that cheating?" He questioned honestly confused.
Korro: "It is it cheating if I only do waterbending." He said seriously before Mako spoke up.
Mako: "No way, I'd rather forfeit than look like a fool out there." He said seriously as Y/n got up and smacked him upside the head.
Y/n: "Wow, Mako. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Besides what you got to lose if Korro plays on the team when this is our team's shot?" She questioned her older brother as the referee opened up the door again.
Referee: "Time's up, you in or out?" He asked as a bit of a argument happened between Mako and Korro while Korro was getting ready as the match was ready to start.
Y/n breathed sharply from her teeth seeing Korro commit a penalty and a bunch of fouls to Korro earthbending
Tenzin: "Pardon me, everyone, have you seen Korro this evening? He's not in his room." He asked the white lotus sentries only to hear the radio that Korro was pro bending at the arena. "I'll get him myself." He said angrily as he became bright red with explosive rage.
Referee: "The Avatar will be permitted to continue, so long as he's solely bends water." He said as Y/n cheered out loud.
Y/n: "Yes! Yes! Go, Ferrets! Go, Mako! Go, Bolin! Go, Korro! Whoo!" She cheered out as the match went on til she saw Korro get knocked into the water below. "Korro!" She yelled out before speed walking down the steps only to see Councilman and Master of Air: Tenzin glaring down at a soaked Korro as she quickly hid in the shadows.
Korro: "Oh, hey, Tenzin. I thought you didn't like coming to these matches." He said nervously.
Tenzin: "Once again, you have flagrantly disobeyed my orders. You were to stay on the island. Let's go." He said to Korro.
Korro: "No. I'm kind of in the middle of something." He said meaning the match towards Tenzin.
Tenzin: "I have tried my very best to get through to you by gentle and patient, clearly the only thing you respond to is force. So I am ordering you to come back to the temple right now." He demanded angrily.
Korro: "Why? So I can sit around and meditate about how bad I am at Airbending? You know oh, I'm beginning to think there's a reason I haven't been able to learn it. Because maybe I don't even need it!" He yelled out at Tenzin having enough of him telling what he can and can't do.
Tenzin: "What? That is a ludicrous suggestion. The Avatar needs to learn Airbending. It is not optional." He argued back at Korro.
Korro: "No, This is what I need to learn. Modern styles of fighting and thinking." He argued back at Tenzin.
Tenzin: "Being the Avatar isn't all about fighting, Korro. When will you learn that?" He said seriously but honestly surpised about the thinking part.
Korro: Turned away from Tenzin as he got onto the lift to return to the match. "I have a match to go finish." He said seriously before round three began.
Tenzin walked through the tunnel entrance to see Y/n waiting for him at the stadium staircase doorway meditating.
Y/n: "Korro got the thinking of more modern way from me. The fire sages taught me a lot in three years time including the teachings of General Iroh." She said honestly before opening up her eyes and stood up to bow to the master of airbending. "It's an honor to meet you, Master Tenzin. Please stay and watch Korro, he may just surprise you." She said honestly before standing up straight with a smile on her face.
Shiro: "Looks like the Avatar's pro bending debut is going to be cut short. He's been pushed back to zone three, and the water is calling his name. It's only a matter of time before--" He announced until Korro began moving like a leaf through the air dancing around the platypus bears attacks with ease. "Hold the phone. Stop the presses. He's still in the game, folks. And he's moving like an entirely different player. All of a sudden the platypus bear strikes are only striking air." He said
Tenzin: "How about that?" He said astonished by Korro's movements of a airbender and he looked back over at the girl who told him to stay had left.
Shiro: "The Platypus bears have no juice left, but Mako and Bolin are still fresh and juicy." He announced as Korro, Mako, and Bolin worked together to win the match. "Knockout! The Fire Ferrets come from way behind and steal the win. What an upset, folks. The Rookies, Avatar in tow, have nabbed a place in the championship tournament. I can not believe it!" He announced.
Back at Air Temple Island
Korro walked towards Tenzin whom was watching air acolytes put new gates into the stone circle.
Korro: "I'm really sorry... about everything I said. I was really frustrated with myself, and I took it out on you." He apologized to Tenzin.
Tenzin: "I think I owe you an apology too. I was trying to teach you about patience, I lost mine. By the way, you were really good out there tonight. I guess that young woman whom told me to stay behind and watch you was right after all. You moved just like an Airbender." He said honestly before Korro looked at him with wide eyes.
Korro: "Wait, you stayed and watched? A girl told you that, was she wearing a fire nation colors dress with wavy (hair color and length) hair and (eye color) eyes?" He questioned Tenzin.
Tenzin: "Yes, and a wise young woman as well. She vanished though as after I saw you win, She told me if I stayed that I'd be surprised and she was right. Pro bending turned out to be the perfect teaching tool for you." He said honestly smiling.
Korro: "I'll see you tomorrow fir Airbending practice. Bright and early." He said walking away smiling. "And, by the way, I kind of permanently joined the Fire Ferrets, and we're playing in the tournament in a couple of weeks." He said before running off to his bedroom.
Back at the Pro bending arena, Y/n leaned out slightly of the window from the attic where she along with her brothers lived. She breathed slowly in the cool night sea air as her eyes gazed out at Air Temple island thinking about Korro with a slight blush on her cheeks. Korro looked at the pro bending arena from his bedroom with a love stuck grin again as he thought about Y/n and the way she moved when dancing with her white fire to the wisdom that she gave Tenzin about him.
Korro: "Thanks, Y/n and sweet dreams." He whispered into the night air while Y/n breathed out white fire from her mouth then they both headed to bed for the night.
