Chapter 7: The Chimeras

They all gasped after entering the room. The doors slammed behind them, trapping them in a coliseum style arena.

Inside there were three monstrous creatures, exceeding heights of fourteen feet, with the body of a cougar, the feet and claws of a wolf, the head and tail of a lion, and the horns of a bull.

The Chimeras.

These were the beasts of legend from the note, Zoey realized. Somehow, they had been tricked into going to the exact place the house wanted them to go.

As the beasts charged towards them, they only had one option: split up. They outnumbered the chimeras five to three. At that rate, while three were being chased, the other two could reach the door and try to figure out how to open it.

There was no need for that plan though. Even after they all went separate ways, all three of the chimeras charged for Miguel.

He backed up against the wall, frightened. The real Miguel was starting to come through again. He still couldn't talk or control his own movements, but he was able to display his true emotions. Unfortunately for him, his emotion at the time was hysteria.

What's going on? He panicked. Why are they only going for me?

The imposter isn't allowed to live past the chimeras, his controller explained.

One chimera swung its wolf-like claw at him. Miguel ducked just barely in time to keep his skin still intact.

Hey, I did that! Miguel exclaimed to himself. I tried to duck and I did.

Yes, you are regaining some action, the imposter told him. I'm not going to be a part of you much longer. I don't need to be here when the chimeras slaughter you. You'll deal with that on your own. Enjoy dying again, Miguel. I'm not quite sure what they'll do to you, but I've heard it's painful.

Miguel felt relief that a physical death would set him free from the imposter, but he also felt sickened by all the things that he had done because of him.

I probably deserve this, he thought to himself.

EY immediately stopped, deeply intrigued by the situation. As she couldn't hear the previous conversation, it didn't make any sense why the chimeras only went for him. Overwhelmed with curiosity, she began to step closer to the monsters.

What are these things, she wondered, and what do they want with Miguel in particular?

With each step foreword, new questions arose. Only Brian's yelling was able to snap her back into reality.

"Kid, what the hell are you doing?"

She flinched in terror, finally realizing where she was. The tallest of the chimeras turned around to see her. She tried to step backwards, but she was too close to escape. The chimera used its tail to pick up the small girl and throw her against the wall. As if the impact of the hit wasn't enough, the beast used its claws to slash at her pale, freckled skin, dousing the child in her own blood.

"Oh my God! EY," Lindsey cried, but she was interrupted by Miguel's tortured screaming.

The other two chimeras clawed at him, creating several deep cuts. As his life and remaining blood dwindled out of him, markings began to appear. Thick, black markings that clearly spelled "FAKE" across his forehead.

Zoey tried to form words, but she was too breathless to speak. Miguel had been the imposter the entire time.

"Dallas," Brian realized.

Zoey nodded, already starting to cry.

The third chimera that wasn't mauling their dead friends at the moment began to run towards them. Not having the time to think, Lindsey made the split second decision of thrusting the sword out in front of her, stabbing the beast. It stepped back and roared in pain. She had bought them some time.

"Come on," she pulled on the arms of the others.

The chimera roared again, summoning help from the other two.

The three remaining kids ran to the door, fighting the urge to look back. Zoey gave in and caught one last glimpse of Miguel's markings, confirming her new hatred of herself.

Just barely outrunning the chimeras, she was the last of her group to reach the door. When she got to the other side, she slammed the door shut and turned to the others. Her face was streaked with tears.

"Zoey," Brian said cautiously. "We're....all at fault."

"No...no, you guys d-don't understand," she explained, choking on her words. "I didn't just let it happen. I actually did it. I killed Dallas....when he was innocent."
